Más allá de que el compositor la haya escrito para castrato o contratenor y sea normalmente cantada por voces femeninas... es indudable que un barítono le da la solemnidad que esta pieza merece.
It actually wasn't uncommon for 18th Century composers to have to do with whathever they had available, and since castrato singers weren't as much popular in the rest of Europe as they were in Spain and expecially in Italy, employing a male voice (tenor or baritone) singing the original part one octave below it's not to be totally outruled. For sure, we have very good falsettist by now and replacing castrati with them is probably the best option we have; but we must keep all plausible possibilities opened, and I actually still liked this performance, albeit I'd probably had preferred a tenor instead of a baritone.

Contrary to a million weddings and funerals, this tender ode to a Plane tree is less an elegy than a dark-stained window on the damaged psyche of a sad boy-king-Xerxes-who grew into a deranged leader of a legendary empire, Persia. The Persian army, enormous and armed to the ear lobes, went careening across the Bosporus under a pathetic clown who fumbled power, resources and unmatched brilliant advisors. Xerxes and his obsequious commanders did their best to lay waste to the sentient life of Persia’s enemy-Greece, ground zero of human sentience in that era-with every preposterous, and pointless, military campaign. While sailing into battle, unfortunately, the Persian Blue & Golds found that their sailors couldn’t even swim, but that the Greek Blue & Whites, both mariners and infantry, could swim from boyhood. Even more unfortunately, in the next century a retributive campaign was mounted by another boy-king turned megalomaniac-Alexander of Macedon, who proved with the lubrication of blood and tears that no brainless atrocity visited on Western Civilization will stand unsurpassed by the response, as documented in the annals of human cruelty, and justified by fatuous, patriotic prostration before superior gods. Ah, men. If only they’d read Sappho’s poetry.

Sadly, I read a translation into English of the words of the chorus that begin with "Ombra mai fu" . I say sadly, because they are to me a great disappointment. They are not in my view beautiful as is the song. The meaning behind them is: to see as beautiful a tree is the theme of several peoms, one of which is very apropos, Joyce Kilmer's. "I think I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree..." In this case, the poem is not at all lovely, rather mundane and prosaic. Maybe, a finer poet will choose to write something better, something like Kilmer's.
