Bryn Terfel saw Dmitri intended to start his program for Cardiff Singer of the World with this aria and thought, "Well, that's easy, maybe he won't get far. But the moment he heard Dmitri's voice, and even more, how eh interpreted the song, he said he was ready to be the first to sign up to his fan club. He knew in his heart Dima would win.

I cannot think of another baritone who could sing Ombra Mai Fu without producing an abomination. Only Hvorostovsky succeeded with this aria in such a low register, and, OH MY!!!, what a success! Thanks to modern recording technology people will be able to marvel at this wonder for as long as the human race can survive.
The man is dead, but his talent will live forever. This is one of the exceptionally rare examples of modern media serving the nec plus ultra of our culture well. I am eternally grateful to frufurJ for putting it here on TH-cam.
Ever since seeing him win Cardiff singer of the World have loved his singing. That titanic battle with Bryn Terfel was class. Wonderful talent RIP big man you will be forever missed.

Dmitri is a glorious, larger-than-life and ultra-charismatic person/artist. He does not try. He just is. And therein lies the winning streak for such fortunate creatures. He can sing Mickey Mouse in holy temple style and the Ave Maria in Disneyland mode and still pull it off. It is an ever-presence that shines through even when he sings Baroque. So, why do we battle about weather or not he should sing Baroque? Just listen. He has such tremendous charm and phenomenal technique - he just stands there, solid like a rock and the voice simply seems to flow out of him effortlessly. We're so lucky just to hear him (yes, and to see him)!

Plus the reason he could OWN those Verdi baritone roles like the boss that he was is likely because he maintained a pure bel canto legato technique singing literature like "Ombra mai fu". Thank God we live in an age where we can still listen to voices like his, even if he's no longer with us. Such a tragedy to lose him at such a young age. What a voice - what a man and so much missed. I was never lucky enough to see him live, but I treasure these recordings.

Totally agree with Paoli and Margaret we will never have another Dima y was and is UNIQUE. Very lucky we were able to listening his beautiful voice and to see him in videos. I think very often about his beautiful family I hope everybody is fine.

Fritz Wunderlich is a tenor, so it's difficult to compare but anyway F.W. is great, I put him in the neighbourhood of Jussi Björling; such a terrible pity and bad luck he died so young.
Dmitri's voice is unsurpassed in its magnificence. So elegantly presented from beginning to end. World of music lost its genius.
Yes ... Lets keep alive his art and his memory in our hearts and simply feel lucky and happy for having tjhe privilege of listening and seeing him perform, record, etc. Dima lives on ...

This beautiful Handel aria is suited to many types of voices. Dmitri gives a wonderful performance. He often sang this song in recital.
I think it's BEST suited for a baritone or a tenor.

Its so nice to hear a baritone singing this...or any man for that matter. We don't hear much of that these days.
In the baroque times this was written for castratos who had the same type of voice that counter tenors have today.
I think this aria was written for him.
