If have knowledge about opera and classic music you are going to aprecaite the magnificent and perfect vocal management of bell canto realizad in this presentation of LORENZO VILLAZON. No more comments. He is Mexican!!!! Muy orgullosos de el!!!
SI, MUY BUEN TENOR, PERO DEMASIADO ACADEMICO PARA MUSICA BARROCCA. SEGURAMENTE PARA MUSICA MAS TARDIA LE IRA MEJOR. PERO HAY QUE RECONOCER, VOZ Y TECNICA IMPECABLES.
How wonderful to hear sung this with a full, beautiful voice instead of treating the aria like a delicate egg wrapped in gauze. No, perhaps not "authentic" baroque style (and a couple of low notes more "growled" than sung), but exquisite artistry and interpretation. Beautiful.
You know, I really don't GET what people's problem is with Villazon singing Handel. He's got an INCREDIBLE voice, amazing control, and great feeling. What is to HATE so much?
i have to say i agree with you. At first i really didn't like his singing but when you really listen to it you pick up all the nuances and emotions, it really has grown on me, you have to give it a chance and listen carefully to it.
I did like this, especially his tone but for me it was a little fast and would have been better if he had given it a chance to breathe. See what you think of this version : th-cam.com/video/DB44ehylkbk/w-d-xo.html
He has a fine voice and uses it well, but it seems to me he sings this like he was singing Verdi, rather than Handel. I did appreciate his including the preliminary recitative, often omitted, which he handled very well. Hope to hear more of him in another context.
Exelente Version.
Has someone told Villazon was not a 1800- composer? This aria should be smooth and done with complete legato. He keeps placing accents and sharp attacks everywhere.
@Nello7 PARA MI LA VERDAD FUE UNA INTERPRETACION ORIGINAL Y BASTANTE BUENA, YO SOY BAJO BARITONO Y LA QUIERO CANTAR EN MI EXAMEN DE ADMICION A LA FACULTAD DE MUSICA! JAJA
I have to add to some of the comments about style and use of legato. This is a difficult piece for the Tenor voice as it was originally written for a castrato. A castrato does not have to be concerned with singing in and out of the passaggio, which the tessitura of this piece sits. Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, all sing in this in the operatic tradition and I see nothing wrong with that. This is the only way for the Tenor voice to negotiate the piece. We as astute listeners, must be more forgiving.
Rolando Villazón is singing Handel with the right technique of italian classical singing. And he truly has a very beautiful and big operatic voice. What he lacks is experience in the baroque style of singing, because he is used to sing mostly operas of 19th century composers. This isn't Verdi-Mascagni-Puccini.. It's too dramatic for this genre, which demands more tranquility and "sul fiato", totally effortless and relaxed... First of all, study very carefully the true style of baroque singing.
@sharky123 Gigli, Pinza and others have a more forthright vocal line on the whole and a consequent ring to the voice. Villazon sometimes seems to me to try so hard to colour that the placement of the voice has subtle shifts.
I think the tempo is ok. It fits the singer. Would be strange if a man like him would melt away in his own singing like Bartoli for example (even though I like her singing!)
I regard Rolando Villazon as the leading tenor of our time. Nevertheless he cannot match in this beautiful aria by Händel with tenors like Jussi Björling or Fritz Wunderlich (who I regard as best in this largo)!
It is a matter of individual taste, what character of voice you prefer. It is important to know, that the role of Serse was written for a soprano castrato, and also, that the tempo marking of the aria is Larghetto, not Largo. BTW I find the tempo of this recording very well chosen, most others - except maybe Adriana Kucerova - seem to be far too slow...
Adrian Rajter Sure most people listen to singers and say they like it or not. Of course you're right that this aria or the role of Xerxes was written for a Counter-Tenor (as soprano castrato are called now). Nevertheless you can analyse singers. I really don't care wether this aria is sung by a soprano, mezzo-soprano or a tenor if it's only well done technically! Even there you can find extreme differences when someone uses more his throat (as e.g. Jonas Kaufmann) or sings it brilliantly like Jussi Björling or Fritz Wunderlich! Then of course it's a matter of taste ... :D (You might even say this singer sings it technically brilliant but I don't like it! As it happens to me with most of Callas' singing - to cold for my taste ...)
MusikPiratCH In my opinion, stylistically Villazon is at least as good, if not better than Bjorling or Wunderlich. Bjorling belts this out like dramatic Italian opera. All have fine voices, and the beautiful Kathleen Ferrier was special to many. However in this lovely aria, I regard Kenneth McKellar and especially Dame Janet Baker, in a class above all others.
Märchenprinz You're welcome to your opinion, but I certainly have no thought of retracting any of my comments. I agree with your assessment of Kathleen Ferrier's rendition, but many will be enjoying her singing long after you and I are dead. Thank you for your comment.
is he related with Bartoli? OMG those faces lol.... you can scare a child telling the kid this dude will be under the bed if the kid doesnt eat all the veggies lol
My god. This is what happens when you have a bad voice teacher(Enrique Jasso). Now he sings baritone roles and directs instead of singing tenor roles. He is only 45. Age where all the big ones were at their prime. Too bad. Such a good voice
Villazón is for sure a good opera tenor who understands a lot about singing. But I would not put him in the same league as Caruso, Alfredo Kraus and so on. I found a young, talented singer with a very beautiful voice on TH-cam. His name is Silviu Mihaila. I like his interpretation of this aria so much better than the interpretation of Villazón. AYPXSQtNK84
I prefer the 18th Century as well. But then I leap to the 20th - Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky's neo-classical works, Bartok. The harpsichord is my favorite instrument. Music happily does not consist of morals.
BUON DIVERTIMENTO !
One of the greatest and most underrated voices of our era.
Indeed!
Underrated? certainly not. He is a STAR.
It's a wonderful singing voice that doesn't seem to belong to this world
Bravo Rolando!

Who made his career in France.
ME ENCANTA, SU MUSICALIDAD ES MARABILLOSA, Y CON UN ESTILO PROPIO SUYO, QUE DA UN PLACER TOTAL!
SI, MUY BUEN TENOR, PERO DEMASIADO ACADEMICO PARA MUSICA BARROCCA. SEGURAMENTE PARA MUSICA MAS TARDIA LE IRA MEJOR. PERO HAY QUE RECONOCER, VOZ Y TECNICA IMPECABLES.
So nice to hear the full aria, and not just the larghetto.
And so well done too!
justcarcrazy Your right it is .I sing from the Larghetto don't know the firs bit
Only Rolando could insist on performing FULL aria with all the beautiful context of it. Bravo!
Splendid voice. Also he looks, behaves and dresses like a man. How refreshing.
BRAVO,BRAVO

beautiful villazon.. great voice
ROLANDO VILLAZON, A GLORIUS SON OF MEXICO!

People dislike him because he shouts more than he phrases...not unlike Corelli ...I still admire him though..as he is a lovely guy,too

Just listen to Andreas Scholl or Nathalie Stutzmann on this, you will change your mind.. and yet, I LOVE Rolando Villazón on everything else.
He has a fine voice and uses it well, but it seems to me he sings this like he was singing Verdi, rather than Handel. I did appreciate his including the preliminary recitative, often omitted, which he handled very well. Hope to hear more of him in another context.

JUST SPLENDID !!!

This aria should be smooth and done with complete legato. He keeps placing accents and sharp attacks everywhere.
I like Villazon's voice, so masculine. But to me Ombra Mai Fu should be so smooth and in full legato while admiring "the shadow of the tree".
And St Paul's Depford, London, is a Baroque church. Perfect size and acoustics.
Rolando Villazon is a gifted singer...
Superb! Thankyou! XXX
Composer George Frideric Handel. Genre : Classical. It is the opening aria from the 1738 opera Serse by Handel.
Excellent
Wonderful.
Excelente
There is nothing wrong with the way he sings it, he does it beautifully.
He has a great voice for this repertoire!
I like this singing
I like this!
BRILLIANTLY SUNG
One of the violinists has an instrument with a carved head! Rather like a viola da gamba. You are never alone when you play an instrument like that.
einfach nur schön
Handel would be happy.
Nice styl!
I like it....
Bravo!
As much as I adore Rolando, this belongs to Andreas Scholl.
It doesn't "belong" to anyone except Handel. And it was written for high voice.
@Nello7 PARA MI LA VERDAD FUE UNA INTERPRETACION ORIGINAL Y BASTANTE BUENA, YO SOY BAJO BARITONO Y LA QUIERO CANTAR EN MI EXAMEN DE ADMICION A LA FACULTAD DE MUSICA! JAJA
wawouwww...t'es le plus fort
Ha! Very nice in fact! ☺️ 🎈

Handel used both women altos and countertenors for his music. By the time he was in London, there were no more castrati. Thank heavens.
He has a Beautiful richness and tone to his voice. But I do agree with the tempo being too fast.
Rolando Villazón is singing Handel with the right technique of italian classical singing. And he truly has a very beautiful and big operatic voice. Oh put a sock in it. McCreesh is an accomplished Baroque conductor and I'm sure he had something to say about tempi, etc.
Bellisimo.
@sharky123 Gigli, Pinza and others have a more forthright vocal line on the whole and a consequent ring to the voice. Villazon sometimes seems to me to try so hard to colour that the placement of the voice has subtle shifts.
Belkę
Chemischer gesang!
Rolando villazo
I think the tempo is ok. It fits the singer. Would be strange if a man like him would melt away in his own singing like Bartoli for example (even though I like her singing!)
Bartoli would make some very odd noises......
Good!
But LARGO so fast.
Play it on 0.75x
He was the future once. Then he sung to heavy roles for his voice. Now at Handel and Mozart. A sad epilouge.
There is nothing sad about Handel or Mozart.
@Desideria7 I want to cry now
Even though he has a beautiful voice, this is too fast...

I like Caruso's version better. He sings this also as a tenor but more powerful and in a higher tone.
He is a genius, but in Haendel i am so sure.
Dang.
is he related with Bartoli? OMG those faces lol.... you can scare a child telling the kid this dude will be under the bed if the kid doesnt eat all the veggies lol
I suspect he has a much better face than yours.
He is so brute!!!!

I do take great pleasure from watching his eyebrows.
in italian is "troppo bruto"
Sembra stia cantando musica leggera...
He is very good, not as Hændelian as Richard Croft. But he is good.
Voce senza espressione

Generally, I do not love Villazón's singing. But here he sounds quite good.
Baroque Purists have never enjoyed "Modern Music" (1800 - beyond) -- they would rather remain stuck in the 17th Century LOL
I prefer the 18th Century as well. But then I leap to the 20th - Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky's neo-classical works, Bartok. The harpsichord is my favorite instrument. Music happily does not consist of morals.
@seektheforce he already damaged his voice

bof??? qu'est-ce que ça veut dire, bof? Mr Zurkinden
Mr. Bean singing
Anjong hahahaha, omg¡¡ i'm still laughing xD hahaha
Anjong I can see what you mean, but what a fine singer.
I'm dead
Bof
To me he is trying to be Fritz Wunderlich - vergebens.
It is not your field Rolando. Learn from Fritz Wunderlich and Franco Corelli how to sing this song :-)
AchimKGK m
Not a song, twit. Aria.
Singing styles change over the years. Thank heavens.....
Hortible! Así està ya, acabado.
