    I saw Sykes in Blue Murder twice, both times within the first 5 rows. He is a monster guitar player, killer tone and can play either soft, slow with that woman tone or just plain shredding. Plus I like his voice better than Coverdale plus he plays the guitar at the same time he sings.

    John Sykes with Brian Downey on drums and Mark Stanway on keys and Doish Nagle on guitar.
    John has also mainly used that Black 1978 Les Paul Custom for more like 40 years

      I think you're correct in my opinion. But I would not discredit "slip of the tongue", simply for the fact that Steve Vai played guitar on that record and it had some incredible guitar playing.

    • @lecturehc
      @lecturehc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ziggylayneable Yeah but it simply wasn't Whitesnake. All that slick sound and flashy playing came at the expense of the band's true soul and identity. The success didn't last long either, as Covardale & co struggled to put out a single good song in the 90's and 2000's let alone a good album, Sykes kept churning out great stuff every few years. Sykes was the man who gave Whitesnake the huge push that they needed and he proved his worth time and again, while also paying the price for it.

    • @SuperWhitesnake1
      @SuperWhitesnake1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both of them cite different reasons. The truth is probably some where in the middle. DC said Sykes owed him $100,000. Also that Sykes wanted a spotlight on him at all times. He also claimed 80% of anything written by Coverdale/Sykes was his.
      Sykes cites tremendous ego on DC. Also that the rest of the band that recorded the album grew to hate DC. Sykes was also really upset that Adrian Vandenberg was brought in to do the solo on Here I Go Again.
      I also heard that because the album was so far behind schedule, and Coverdale had to recover from nasal surgery, that DC and Geffen fired them all, due to lack of funding.

    John is a Guitar God and was one of my biggest influences as a guitarist. He wrote an album that sold 20 million plus but got screwed by Coverdale as did Neil Murray and Anynsly Dunbar. Luckily John got credit on the album and got royalties but him playing with Whitesnake live would have been so much better. Slip of the Tongue probably would have been a much better Album had he been in the chair. I love Steve Vai but John gave WhiteSnake the sound that put them on the map world wide. You can find him playing Crying in the Rain live online . It was before he Recorded the 87 release. Also listen to the original version of Crying in the Rain by WhiteSnake then what John did to it and you’ll see why John is held in such high regard among Guitarist
