I think 'Ready An' Willing' and 'Come And Get It' are the best studio albums Whitesnake did. The classic lineup of Coverdale, Paice, Lord, Marsden, Moody and Murray is THE definitive Whitesnake. When Coverdale decided to break in to America they became a heavy metal band with very little subtlety, and these days it's Coverdale with a backing band.

Love the older stuff for it's classic British blues/rock feel, but to me, The Sykes era sound was off the chain. That solo after the cello part in Still of the Night is still some of the best axe badassery of the 80s. Like a lot of folks, I bailed on the Vai stuff and followed Sykes over to Blue Murder.

It's a shame that if you mention Whitesnake, most people will only remember the "hair band" that did the video with tawny Kitaen on the car. I loved the 1987 album too (Sykes was a beast on it), but the old stuff is where it's at.

Too true. I did buy 1987 but basically ignored it after one play. Now I don't recognise anything after Slide It In. As for the abomination sell out version of Here I Go Again, that must be the only time when an artist murdered his own song.

I am a big Whitesnake fan and I absolutely agree with you. Old bluesy style is what Whitesnake really is. I am fan on this Whitesnake, when in this band were Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Neil Murray and, of course, David Coverdale. Cozy Powell and Mell Galley were also good.

Whitesnake is one of my favorite bands ever!! The 1987 self titled album to this day is still one of the greatest albums I have ever listened to. I love their whole catalog. My favorite albums have always been 1987 self titled album, Slide It In, Saints And Sinners, Ready An Willing, Slip Of The Tongue, Come An Get It, Love Hunter, and Trouble. John Sykes is my favorite guitar player ever that played in Whitesnake. I would have really loved to hear a follow-up to the 1987 self titled album with John Sykes. I actually love Blue Murders debut album better than Whitesnake's Slip Of The Tongue. I have and love all their live albums. Especially the Back To The Bone 1984 , the live 1988 album from the 1987 self titled box set, Live In The Heart Of The City, The Purple Tour, Live In The Shadow Of The Blues, and Donington 1990.

I went to see my favorite blues rock band & I got a spandex & hair metal show. I really don’t know any Whitesnake music after that. A fine hair band I’m sure, just not my thing.

The "High Water" mark for WhiteSnake as a blues-based, hard rock band: Come And Get It. The "Metal" peak:1987....saw them on this tour & from a performance standpoint....far superior to Crue, though I'm a fan of both. I also caught them with Foreigner & Jason Bonham in Nashville....the 40+ years of singing has took it's toll! Yet consider the talent throughout the years - Bernie Marsden/Tommy Aldridge/John Sykes/Neil Murray/Adrian Vandenberg/Jon Lord....Coverdale must be one hell of a pitch-man!!!

Seen both Marsden and Moody doing solo gigs at the Great British R&B festival here in Colne in the good old UK. Both did some stuff similar to Whitesnake but both did stuff that was very different. Proved that both are very talented guitarists. Whitesnake wasn't the same when this duo was split up.

Saw them twice, Lord, Paice, then Powell etc. I was following them right from the start. Don't forget 'Into the Light' 2000, a Coverdale solo which rocks! Think after Purple he couldn't perform due to contractuals for two years so wrote the early solo stuff.
He released the live 'In the heart of the city' double album cus the import version was extortionately priced and he always cared about his followers. Vaguely recall Mr an Mrs Dio did some backing vocals on 'Northwinds', or was it just Mrs Dio and friends? Yes Wendy Dio backing on "Give Me Kindness"

John Sykes really was the missing link Coverdale needed to make that band into the Blues/Metal monster he had envisioned, and also to break them into the U.S. market (which is ironic - don't you think? - considering Sykes had no prior history in this country), as evidenced by *Slide It In* and *Whitesnake.* Once Coverdale fired Sykes, it all came crumbling down. Sykes can take pride in that, as well as the debut from the band he would form immediately upon his firing, *Blue Murder.* Produced by none other than Bob Rock, this album was one of the greatest of 1989. A final and fitting fuck-you from John to David. 😘

Thanks for posting this - interesting. A few inaccuracies with release dates etc but I see corrected in comments
Whitesnake of course were pretty big in the UK before they broke the States and I think like most UK fans of my generation we prefer the pre-1987 vintage. However, a lot of classic tunes came post Slide it In too - Judgement Day, Still of the Night, Steal your Heart Away, Love ain't no Stranger
Looking forward to the new album in Spring 2018 and hopefully another UK tour around the time of my 50th birthday and a chance for my kids to catch their 1st and 3rd Whitesnake gig's respectively.

Ready an Willing is a great blues/hard rock album. It was a minor hit in the US with Fool for your Lovin, I remember hearing on the radio. IMO, the best “Deep Purple family tree” since Come Taste the Band, and better than anything DP themselves would ever release afterwards. Whitesnake’s best IMO. Every song is great and the addition of Jon Lord and Ian Paice along with Neil Murray make the rhythm section extremely effective. Check out She’s a Women. Highly recommended.

My favourite Whitesnake album is the American mix version of Slide it in, and favourite track Givs me more time.
But my favourite period of Whitesnake is from Trouble in 78, to the 1987 album, after that it kinda lost its way by then in my opinion.
I was kinda hoping via request could you do an in depth review of the Slide it in album for me?

Forgets to mention Ainsley Dunbar played in Jefferson Starship . Later on also played with the UFO band : Mogg/Way and Damn Yamkees. I also think he did one album with Mothers Army which Joe Lynn Turner on vocals, Bob Daisly on Bass. Made 3 great albums but bot all with Dunbar. Carmine Appice also did 1 or 2 albums.I like these kinds of portraits of a band but mistakes are emberrassing. Cozy Powell indeed did MSG befor ehe joined DC in Whitesnake. Btw, Richard Bailey replaced Jon Lord after the spring of 84. He was a heavy on synthesizer man while Lord was ofcourse a Hammondmand. Btw, it also would have been nice to mention DC's stint with Jimmy Page(before he reunited with Robert Plant, often dismissing DC and his zeppelinisque efforst including dying his hair blond but still singing a Coverdale.page tracks live!) : supposedly it was meant to be called Legend but renamed into Coverdale/Page. They did not tour much but had legendary shows in Japan.

Just a footnote. Cozy and Galley did play on the Saints & Sinners tour. Colin Hodgkinson also replaced Murray on bass. Later Galley, Murray & Marsden formed a band called MGM. Saw them support Marillion in 86. Galley had left Whitesnake after he injured his hand and MGM saw the first appearance of The Claw, a device that allowed Mel to play again.

I prefer the UK mix of slide it in. Other than me preferring both Moody and Galley, the drum sound on the British mix is bigger and in your face. On the US version it's more in the background.

I was a fanatical Whitesnake fan back in the day...loved Coverdale in Purple and his two solo albums...Whitesnake to me was great into the early 80's....kick ass blues based hard rock.......unfortunately I feel that Saints and Sinners was their last great album....suddenly we had Coverdale with an" overhaul" of spandex teased hair plastic surgery generic commercially contrived MTV dime a dozen 80's hairband poser metal .........couldn't get into it......clueless girls back then ( and morons ) actually thought this was a new band ....give me Whitesnake up through Saints and Sinners....I'll accept Slow and Easy.....sounds like an outtake from the old days...haha

They did do a tour in 1994 too in support of the "Greatest Hits" album, which had a new remix of 'Here I Go Again' I recall. I think Warren DeMartini from RATT was in the band at the time, along w. Coverdale of course, and Vandenberg. Not sure who else was in it.

just watched your Rainbow and UFO videos too. v entertaining.many thanks.

When considering the career of David Coverdale and Whitesnake, one can't dismiss the work of John Kalodner. He was the A&R guy who got Coverdale together with John Sykes to write, while also insisting that Martin Birch NOT be used to produce the 1987 record, as Birch had done on many of the previous Whitesnake records. Kalodner wanted a new, fresh, "American" sound for the upcoming record. (Kalodner, by the way, was also instrumental in launching Aerosmith's return to the rock stratosphere around the same time.) Also very important to the Whitesnake story is Marty Callner, who was the video director who conceived the videos that would feature Tawny Kitaen ("Kitaen Kitaen!" ). That '87 record was good, but if not for those videos, David Coverdale might not have had such a long career.

My first song was "Guilty of love" which charted in Germany. Since then and up to today, I really love the album "Slide it in". Also the work before that is quite nnice. Later songs are that obviously refined for commercial market, they are not so much my thing.

Your timeline is off; Trouble goes all the way back to 1978, Lovehunter was 1979, Ready an' Willing was 1980, Come an' Get It was 1981, and Saints & Sinners was 1982.

If you want the BEST version of Slide It In, get the UK edition. John Kalodner ruined the American edition by not just having extra guitars (which were merely OK to me), but doing both a resequencing AND remix for the US market. I first heard the British mixes for "Love Ain't No Stranger" and "Slow An' Easy" on a release called "The Definitive Collection: Whitesnake", and a couple of others made their way to the double "Whitesnake: Gold" set.

Thanks Pete! Great retrospective on Whitesnake. Absolutely love bluesy hard rock and Whitesnake brought some of the best. Loved COME N GET IT but, was actually SLIDE IT IN that got me hooked. Sorry to say this though, 1987 version of Here I Go Again leaves me cold. I prefer the Saints N Sinners version. Like A Hobo I Was Born To Walk Alone. 1987 version just seems too poppy and syrupy. Like they were looking for a hit. If they had kept pounding their blues rock ways, i think they may have been even bigger!

It may be a good idea to work on the history and presentation before making a video, Coverdale toured the band as Whitesnake earlier in 1978 before the release of Trouble and the tour that supported this release, I saw this very first tour in a place called Ashington and was at the first date of the Trouble tour at the City Hall Newcastle, I had a brief facebook back and forth with Bernie Marsden about the Ashington gig.
