- One thing I forgot to mention is I think a smaller frame would be less prone to the shimmy then my 58c size frame. I go over my experience and the process I went through to solve or at least adjust to a vibration / shimmy issue with the Jamis 631 steel frame bikes and why I think it happens
Interesting. That is some comprehensive detective work you had to go through to come to some sort of conclusion. I have occasionally ridden with a shimmy and I hate to do so as it makes doing stuff on the bike when riding a real pita. I am going off memory here but isn't there a small attachment, on some kind of flexi-cord, that fits between the headtube and downtube that can fix a shimmy? That might be worth looking into unless it is a piece of kit purely a figment of my imagination. Take care. Ride safe and shimmy-free! Jay
Thanks Jay, It's something that has plagued every road tour I've done with this bike and it ruins a downhill. I guess steel frames are prone to shimmy since the material flexes. The issue with this frame is you can't use panniers at all without a shimmy unless you go to extremes like I have with weight upfront and I'm not sure that would work all the time.
I have the same Problems with my Kona Sutra LTD 22 when using the Ortlieb Quick Rack with panniers, thanks for the video
@@van.bike.travel701 just curious what size frame? Wondering if larger frames are more susceptible to it
@@socaljoe nope. It is a 52 cm frame. Loaded the bike with a Ortlieb Handlebar-Pack QR about 2,5 kg , a half frame bag, a toptubebag 3 bottles an the Quick-Rack with a 2 Ortlieb Forkpacks as Panniers (or the 2 Gravelpacks) and a Drybag with a sleepingbag on the top, the whole rack ist the about 4 kg (I wanted to Keep the fork clean), but even putting waterbottles on the fork Was no solution. Keepen the bagend light Helps. I had no problems by using a pelago front rack... its a pain 😥
