Indigenous languages revive and thrive in Mexico

- About half the estimated 7,000 languages spoken in the world today may disappear by the end of this century. The world loses another language approximately every two weeks.
In the state of Chiapas, Mexico, about 25 percent of people dont speak any Spanish. Rather, they speak a host of indigenous languages, many of which originated in ancient Mayan times. Some organizations, like the Intercultural University of Chiapas school in San Cristobal, work to keep these dying languages alive by teaching them to the next generation.
Worldfocus special correspondent Lynn Sherr and producer Megan Thompson highlight Mexicos attempt to preserve the past by speaking ancient languages in the present tense.

@O.M.N El tener el appellido Hispano no te hace descendiente de los españoles. En chiapas el appellido mas comun es lopez y los Que tienen appellido lopez alli son casi todos indigenas. Bolivia mitad del pais es indigena whe tubo un presidente indigena llamado evo MORALES, casi zero descendientes extranjeros en Bolivia y el apellido mas comun es un apellido Hispano Flores, y te aseguro que no son Gitanos, y hasta hablan Quechua, el appellido Flores es Gitano. Guatemala es lo mismo. Las Filipinas el apellido mas comun es Santa Cruz, y casi nigun filipino tiene mas de 2% sangre Español y algun ni siquiera una gota y tienen appellidos como hernandez. Muchos indigenas no tubieron appellidos y se registraron con appellidos Hispanos especialmente para evitar discriminacion. Y Sí, son mas indigena que españoles nisiquiera logras aver una diferencia cuando un indigena se viste como los mestizos. En españa el mestizo tiene que acceptar que en muchas ocasiones es racialmente la misma raza que los indios porque nadie ver una differencias si los indigenas nos se viste differente. Y aqui en USA andan los Mexicanos mintiendo que son “raza Hispana” cuando no importa lo que te pones en españa eres Visto como la misma raza como indigena. Y los negros tambien tienen appellidos Hispanos. Historicamente Afro Ecuatoriano fueron obligados a tener appellidos Hispanos porque no pudieron comprobar si su appellidos fueron inventado o no, y conosco indigenas que tubo el mismo problema. El registro civil solo accepta algunos appellidos indigenas no todos. Y tu forma de hablar es para promover la hispanidad y mitar la cultura indigena como si no te pudieras conectar con tus raizes por ser mesclado. Para me esos tonto. Es mas tonto ver gente que se ve como evo morales diciendo que son “raza Hispana” ni siquiera dicen mestizos aqui en estados unidos. O decir que comen comida hispana cuando es comida indigena.

If you wnna bring a language back it's as simple as learning it and teaching your kids. Or making sure your kids are taught at a young age by someone who knows. Nothing is impossible! 💖 a lot of damage has been done to our cultures for them to be erased but we have the power to revive them

Actually, Mexican ppl, on both sides of the border, use Native words everyday, they are part of our every day vocabulary. Aquacate, molcajete, chile, I could go on and on.

Yeah but the Mayas and Aztecas or Incas were like the Romans and the Greeks in Europe .They were very advance while the other ones like Celtics , Germans etc were just tribes. Many languages in our lands Uto-Aztecan runs from Utah to Mexico but Mayan is an isolate native tongue from Chiapas Mexico to the Yucatan to Guatemala.

These are Maya Tzotzil Amerindians of Mexico not Aztec/Nahuatl native Im indigenous as well Ojibway and Cree nation of North Dakota. Tzotzil = People of the Bat.
I thought tzotzil would mean something more along the lines of "batness" than "bat people" XD In Yucatec, a related maya language tsots= bat and -il = ness, like talam= dificult, talamil= difficultness/dificulty. But now that I think about it, People of the Bat makes a heck of a lot more sense than People with Batness, so thanks for including that in your post!
Matt Anderson My Dad is from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico with our ancestry comin from the state of San Luis Potosi in Mexico but he's been living in Minnesota for years. When I went up to the Casino in Mil Lacs I was surprised that one of the Ojibwe men(who was about the same age as my dad) looked like his brother. Our North American blood is strong. I had never seen a Native American from the U.S.A. before so I was a lil naive but In that moment it hit me deep to know that my blood is cemented in the North American continent. It was a beautiful moment.

It saddens me that natives of Mexico endure the same troubles as us U.S. natives. there is so little of us left, especially in the U.S. We represent only 1 percent of N. America and dont forget that that also counts mixed so it's pretty sad. There's lots of Mexicans here in cali but I rarely see any that look indigenous maybe slightly but that's it, and I lived in highly Mexican populated areas. They usually look heavily mixed with white Spaniard or something. Where are you my brothers of the south?lol. BTW I'm a nez perce native of idaho.
Trust me Mexico is all brown. Around 10% are full blooded natives and the rest are mixed still making them natives. Of course there are whites here and there but they are very very few compared to la raza. The media always makes it seem as if the white man controls, and I'm pretty sure the leaders of Mexico wants that aswell, but nothing could be further from the truth lol. If anything, the white man are most likely gonna be history in mexico in some years. I'm mexican myself btw
chemuhk If I may ask what part of California you're at? I feel like it's the complete opposite!! I've lived in central valley, have family in East LA so go there often, and live in San Francisco like 80% plus is much more indigenous looking, I always get stared at as a light skin.
***** Hey man, we're all chicanos and have to stick together. sure I didn't grow up speaking the language and respect that you have lived it as your 'life' but I've always had an affinity for my indigenous roots, never saw it as something different but rather the same as 'hispanic' culture. I don't think we appropriate and mesh the cultures, we're aware there are mayan and aztecs and that they conquered a lot of other tribes such as olmec and toltecs etc so we respect each one as unique. +Edmundo Zaragoza Racially, most part of Mexicans are Amerindians (most of them also with a relevant white ancestry), and there are many whites also (most of them also with a relevant Amerindian ancestry).
But culturally, Mexican culture is the result of the mix between many indigenous cultures and Spanish culture.
The same thing happens in all the Americas. For example the culture of United States mainly it's a mix between many European cultures and some African cultures.
Depending each country, cultures are a mix between European, native and African cultures (in some places the African part it's minimum or nonexistent, and in other places, the native part it's minimum or nonexistent, and the European part it's present in all countries because the colonization).
I wouldn't say we are "ignorant to the truth." Most Mexicans of indigenous descent do know they are native and no, we don't all consider Hispanic as our race. If there's a reason I personally wouldn't want to identify by my race it is because, like most Mexicans that I assume you speak of, I am Mestizo/a, and thus mixed race. Assuming European and indigenous are the only two racial (I say "racial" for lack of a better word) elements present in Mexican Mestizos (for simplicity), then being Mestizo could mean you are either more European (aka white) and less indigenous; more indigenous and less European; or equally white and indigenous. Such a thing cannot be easily determined after so many generations of mixing and no, it cannot be determined simply by your phenotype... The chances of all Mexican Mestizos to take an Ancestry DNA test to find this out is not very high... Therefore, expecting us to identify by our race is not realistic. As being primarily Spanish-speakers, identifying as Hispanic makes most sense. Keeping this in mind, you also cannot expect Mexicans to have "kept [their] native culture," as much as I would love for that to have happened! The many generations of mixing I previously mentioned imply that a particular Mexican Mestizo could be a descendant of more than one type of indigenous group. If Mexicans were to try to keep their indigenous culture after all these years of being removed from the it, it'd be like asking white Americans, who are usually of VERY mixed European nationalities, to have kept their European culture--- who knows how many languages, customs, etc. one would have to learn! White Americans can at least take the Ancestry DNA test and find out their regional distributions. Mexicans can take that test, too, but it won't tell us which indigenous groups we pertain to. If you understood Mexican (and even US) history you would know that being culturally indigenous has been long looked down upon and regarded as underprivileged in many cases. Mexican Mestizos' indigenous ancestors were no exception to such oppression and for that reason they most likely did not pass down their cultures to people such as myself. So no, we are not ignorant. Are some Mestizos ashamed of their indigenous background and more proud of their European one? I can agree with that. However, I don't feel you can validly compare Mexicans' (particularly mestizos') lack of indigenous cultural identity with that of Native Americans in the U.S. who actually belong to particular tribes. I am Alaskan Native, but I have ancestors from Mexico. This is very Beautiful, In my Language Yupik, Na is same as house but we spell it as Ena. Keep up the good work, keep you language, never think you are lesser from other people. you are Indigenous. you are powerful in your culture and traditions.

Why let a language die becuase majority of the world does not speak it? Native languages are valuable!! They give native people a sense of belonging and heritage. Language has a deep meaning for people. Yes,these languages are never going to become widely spoken but why brush them aside just because they have no place in the "academic world". Growing up I was embarrassed speaking mixteco but as I grew up I’m glad my parents taught me our native language. As a grown up Ive never thought Mexico was racist just like America because you were of indigenous blood. Seeing this make me happy.

Great video. I myself most likely have Wixaritari ancestry. Most of us Mexicans are indigenous. The Mexica Movement is trying to revive our true culture and identities.

Spanish it's NOT the official language. There's no document in the constitution of the United Mexican States that declares Spanish as the official language.
In fact the government recognizes 65 American Indian indigenous languages as their national languages. Making Spanish 'de facto'.

I have an idea that the advancing technology of the 21st century will halt to a large degree the erosion of many of the larger minority languages as instantaneous translation of speech & the written tongue will become commonplace. This will enable the accumulated literature, folklore,songs, all of which occupy an emotional niche to be kept viable & treasured by the generations to come
A few dominent languages would be kept as international tools of communication while the smaller languages would do their own thing in their specific communities.
In my own country South Africa,we have 11 official languges. The most recent addition to these, English,since the early 19th century is the kingpin, because of its international usefulness. The Black government, business & the black population are largely enthusiastic about this process. As with Spanish in Mexico no doubt, it is regarded as the key to social advancement & urban parents converse with their children in shades of pidgin English.
As the blacks have an oral tradition culture with but a handfull of literary works ,they are unperturbed by this process & take their cue from the ruling party which holds mosts of its functions through medium of English.
The only group,other than the small English speaking population, which does have an advanced literature covering nearly every field, ,law,poetry prose theatre song, science, medicine Is the Afrikaans speaking cultural group. ( Afrikaans has over 350 years diverged from 17th century Dutch).They form a community of about +- 5 million people, who are presently having their language's functions dismantled/discarded in nearly every field ,including ,banking business, schools & universities, in keeping with the sentiments of the ruling black/bantu people who form the largest population group & apply demographic pressure across the board.
Geez...they had to learn spanish just like we had to learn english...

I had this question in my mind, what language there was spoken in Mexico before spanish.
I doubt if there is a real interest. I rememeber at the university of Michigan, we had ansihmaebaemowin. This was 1973, we should admit it produced no real speakers but was a curio. Saddening fact. I wonder what will happen here. Will the interest survive...? I hope so !!!

Now there is the Queretaro dialect, and this is broken into "Hadi" is "Greetings" in the Queretaro (Amecalco) dialect. "Ta moxo" is "Greetings" in the Queretaro (Guanajuato) dialect. "Hjatzi" is "Greetings" in Temoaya dialect. "Haxa'jua" is "Greetings" in Texcatepec dialect. "Haxa" is "Greetings" in Tilapa dialect.

@EPGAH Ok so if you read the title of the video it says "indigenous languages revive and thrive in Mexico", that clearly says IN MEXICO. I'm assuming that "by our country" you mean the US. So the revitalization is occurring where the language originally came from. So it's not in the US. So whats ur problem? also, who said a person can't be bilingual? clearly, the people in the video are. Learning one language doesnt mean a loss of another, in fact, it mean expansion of language.
@EPGAH 1. no one is talking about serving any masters.. i dont even get that analogy. It's completely possible to speak two languages and you can like both cultures. 2. Hegemony is detrimental to the group who is made to believe that he/she is inherently inferior. So why buy into it? 3. My response would be, "let me learn that language to understand the people and it's culture." I would interpret the message and respond appropriately, knowing that Ive made a decision based on evidence.

The natives weren't displaced in Mexico and are not a minority there the way they are in the US and Canada. Virtually everyone in Mexico is indigenous to some extent if not completely. I don't know why Mexico continues to use Spanish as its official language when it is no longer under Spanish rule and when this language has no context to Mexico whatsoever other than colonial rule. This is the equivalent of all of India speaking English after being colonized rather than their own languages.

@EPGAH a gun doesnt make you have a stronger culture.. it makes u cowardly and unable to have your culture stand on its own. Instead, you resort to forcing someone to your culture instead of choosing it themselves. That's not right. And you know what, i will teach them whatever language I want to. Leave it alone. It would not be to defy you, but to empower them to hold a strong identity.

@EPGAH the cultures and languages failed because you went and killed the people, took their wealth, then forced the people who survived to work for you and you forced them to forget their language.They didnt fail in and of themselves, they were purposely destroyed. The two cultures met when they were at different stages with one having better methods of killing the other. That doesnt make the European culture better culturally just better technologically. And this is language, not technology

No se puede hablar del México actual como el país de los mexicas (aztecas) ya que la mayor parte de los mexicanos mestizos o indígenas de este país no tienen por qué ser descendientes de ese pueblo si no de otros, precisamente los que sea aliaron con los españoles para vencer a los aztecas.
En eso estoy de acuerdo, tecnológicamente estaban atrasados, pero como mencione anteriormente lo única que podían envidiar de otras civilizaciones eran los avances tecnológicos, en lo que se refiere a su organización social y política estaban altamente desarrollados, tenían escuelas, hospitales, sistemas burocráticos eficientes apesar de lo sanguinario que hayan sido sus creencias y modo de guerrerar, aunque no se distanciaba mucha de las cruzadas e inquisición.

yea but thsoe "62" languages have not been officialised and are not being taught like spanish.how many authors actually publish books in any of the native languages.Very few.How many actual Mexx really know about their own indigenous background well ( not the way the spanish taught them to ) of course very few. they need to nurture that indianess, polish it , love it and cherish it.
I really want to learn Tzotzil, Nahuatl, and Yaqui. It is just a case of finding some decent pedagogical resources.
