The whole point of the movie is that you shouldn’t judge based on looks. If he’s good looking at the end, that’s just hypocritical, like the ugly duckling. You’re only valuable because you’re pretty! That’s the implication, so I really appreciate that Adam’s human form wasn’t attractive.

Tangled is a solid 8 because I really like the vibe and Mandy Moore does a great job and it's a really thoughtful development of the Rapunzel mythos. Frozen is just so cookie-cutter and I don't know how it got so popular.

It had endearing protagonists, pretty animation, a hit song, and the first Disney ending where the heroine saved herself and I mean that it was literally her own action that reversed the freezing.

I don't get the appeal of Tangled... It's good, but left me pretty underwhelmed in the end. Flynn just feels too much like a generic Han Solo type, and Rapunzel's story gets a really anti-climactic ending (she finally realizes the truth about her family... by looking at a painting of a sun? Am I the only one who doesn't see the poetry there? Also, her reunion with her parents is not nearly as emotional as the movie wants it to be, because we barely even know them, and because it doesn't really fullfil Rapunzel's arc in any way.)
Gothel was a great villain, though.
Still, I'll take Frozen over it, any day.

I feel like Mulan does the "Girls are just as good as guys" trope really well. They don't preach about it, but instead shows a woman who care for her father so much that she wants to take his place in order for him not to endanger himself. She did what she did for a loved one rather than an agenda. I respect that very much.

Also Mulan wasn't good because she was a girl, she was good because she had the ability to think outside the box. She was the one who figured out how to use the weights to her advantage when climbing the poll, and she wiped out an entire army in one shot by just aiming the rocket at the mountain top to cause an avalanche.

My sister said that one of the reasons Moana was good is because the main character is female and everyone is hawaiian. I asked why that should matter, and she said that no other disney films have done that. Lilo and Stitch never happened.
Spox, I'm pretty sure they're Samoan. The movie refers generally to the Polynesian islands for its base but the characters are Samoan (at least Mau'i is). I live in American Samoa, so watching this movie was a little different than other Disney movies.

They are a mixture of Polynesian cultures with aspects which all Polynesian cultures share, or they at least have no preference, eg. her ancestors sing in Samoan and Tokulean

Went and rewatched Pocahontas. It’s actually not that bad. One of the better love interest introductions imo, with all that nonverbal communication in the scene, and the songs are really great.

The only real opinion I had a problem with was giving Hercules the same score as the goddamn travesty that is Home on the Range.

The pacing in the first half is far too quick, we aren't given enough time with the sisters to feel the weight of Elsa abandoning Anna or their fight in Elsa's castle, the second half drags its feet until the last 15 minutes, Hans as the villain makes no real sense; and the way it's sprung on us without any kind've foreshadowing felt cheep, the Trollrocks are absolutely nonsensical and the total lack of an explanation for their existence is infuriating (outside of Elsa's powers and their existence, Frozen seems to take place in our world. So why include magic beings without explaining them?), the book detailing their existence being brought up a grand total of once makes it feel like an uneeded mcguffin, and the film is overall visually boring (IMO). I'd honeslty put it right on par with Hercules in terms of quality, as Hercules suffered from a lot of the same issues, and felt like an overall hallow film where nothing in the story really mattered.

I totally agree. However, without the gargoyles, it would definitely have been too dark for children, so I see where Disney was coming from.
We definitely need one of those "without" edits that cuts every scene with the gargoyles out.
I thought they were fine while movie kept their existence ambigious, like "it's all just in the Quasi's head because he had no friends and was alone through his entire life", but then in the end they bloody defend the cathedral and it's just... NOPE.
P.S. This is especially hurts because Disney already had an animated, dark and epic series about gargoyles. #XanatosIsTheBestDisneyVillain (Seriously, the guy has multiple tropes of villain badassitude named after him, he is that awesome)

As a kid, when I first watched hunchback, I hated it. I thought it was too scary, and I didn't understand the character's motivations. I felt like plot was too mish-mashed for some reason. (Turns out that the plot really was a mish-mash, a whole retcon of Victor Hugo's original book.) And the gargoyles were actually my favorite part as a kid.
This guy is clearly and sadly not a fan of Disney's Golden and Silver Ages, the Walt-Era Disney and its philosophy heavily focused on animation and atmosphere rather than story

I nearly died when I saw Snow White at 4/10.....4/10?!?! And Aladdin gets a 10/10? Snow White is a poetic masterpiece, especially concerning the death of the Queen. Aladdin, on the other hand, is unbalanced and horribly generic with the only memorable or unique aspects lying solely with Robin Williams just improvising his lines.

For me, a supreme masterpiece as Pinocchio having only a 6/10, and the same rating as Home On The Range, is the ultimate sin of plenty in his ratings of Walt-era films
Because the story is what is important no normal viewer cares abt the pHiLoSoPHy of the animation they want to know if they can watch it when they are bored with a friend and as someone who has watched Snow White very recently it BORING while Aladdin kept my attention and it was funny

A "gospel" in the broad sense is a religious teaching. The Muses are goddesses singing about other gods and goddesses. Ergo, a song about an ancient Greek gospel becomes ancient Greek gospel music.
It's a kind of joke, and it ties into the whole film's approach of putting contemporary spins on old, dour myths for the sake of fun.

The gargoyles in The Hunchback of Notre Dame I think are there for kids to enjoy the movie without having to die of boredom (because obviously every Disney movie needs some inanimate object or animal to talk), but I also think that they are a genius addition to the film, showing that because of a life of solitude it forced Quasimodo to become somewhat of a schizophrenic and imagine that they are real and his friends at a desperate attempt to get that lack of human communication that he already barely gets
It's okay to have kid friendly content in your Disney movie but it's a bad balance with all the dark and heavy themes
