Ya dood it frickn sucks growing up without others like you it’s nice to know there’s others that also struggled and I think we could probably help each other out
I am in my 50s and just found out. I am lucky I joined the military. I was taught to skim a page not read all the individual words and sentences. Your brain will read the in between. I can’t do even basic math. I was trying to go to college and it’s all done on a computer. I went to a Tudor and he said I inverted the numbers and was frustrated. He said before I can move forward get tested for dyslexia. My main issue is with number more so than reading. As for as the ADHD I just Found out with all the testing, and when I told my friends they were like duh !!!
@@krecikowi Progress? You can. People are stupid and think that being dyslexic just means you read backwards. I'd be happy to have a PhD it took me 10 years to get my undergrad going to school full time. UGH.
My father only learnt that he had dyslexia when I was diagnosed as a kid. He told me that after my evaluation, he was crying. Becaus as the evaluator explained my condition to my parents, he realized he went through the exact same problems in school. It took him more than 40 years of his life to put a word on his condition and he wasn't even looking for it.
I'm 20 and finally acknowledging that I have dyslexia. I've struggled for so long but nothing is as damaged as my confidence. I gave up on myself a long time ago and I'm determined to get my life back.
Thanks for your comment Mika Marie. Its great to hear you're determined to get your life back. If there are any resources you are looking for, let us know. We'd be happy to help.
I totally feel you my peers always looked at me as the dumb kid the kid who couldn’t read out loud and still isn’t at there reading level. Something that helped me get my confidence more up at least a little was to tell people around me what dyslexia is it’s not necessarily as I’m reading backwards because for me that’s not at all what it is I don’t know exactly how to explain it I just don’t understand like why things are the way they are like why is “encore” spelt with an “E” why isn’t it ONCORE like that makes sense
I'm also 20 and I'm trying to find a way to get formally diagnosed, I'm so tired of being told I'm lazy when I genuinely am working hard but it feels like my mind is working against me.
@@sorry.sweaty Me too. I'm turning 20 this year and I just want to get properly diagnosed. Since my childhood I've struggle with reading outloud, but it was never taken seriously. My parents and teachers just told me to try harder. I still feel so embarassed when I can't properly enunciate long words
I have Phd and dyslexia, life sucks. NOBODY understands me in my field. You smart, you have PhD and you don't know what hand is right vs. left without pointing it. I will never be able to progress in my field of work. I HATE writing, but I LOVE doing science, design projects etc. etc.
I am about to submit my PhD thesis in genetics. Also had struggled so much, but it always felt like I just have to proove everyone around that I am not stupid. I love what I do, I really love science, but academia is a just so toxic... my supervisor thretend to kick me out from my phd if I were taking mental health medication. I changed the lab in my final year because of him (in the middle of pandemic, with my project wasted because of lockdown). I got a diagnosis of autism spectrum a few years back (my boss knew about it), but I am certain I also have adhd and possibly dyslexia (my father has it). I want to get a diagnosis and meds for the adhd, after I am done with the phd. But honestly it makes so much sense to learn about dyslexia too, I had no idea this might be the reason I am not able to get right and left side...
Getting an assessment tomorrow after accepting the situation. I was suspected to be dyslexic as a child and throughout my adult life but kept denying it due to my career goals. Only after my BSc, MSc and PhD have I thought this needs to be understood. Called myself stupid all my life, never good enough so had to prove it to myself through achievements instead of addressing the problem head on. I now really want to study medicine and for me I need to accept this reality before starting a profession as taxing as medicine. If you think you are, get checked, it’s not worth suffering as I did just because you learn and express yourself differently from what the rest of society expects.
Hope you got your dream and are in Med school now ! Please don’t be to harsh on yourself there it’s hard as it is. - From a fellow dyslexic & ADD Med student :)
I’m 45. I just found out this week that I’m dyslexic. Now a LOT of things make more sense about my relationship with reading. Found out about ADHD at 21 and autism at 44. I guess better late than never. It’s nice to know I’m not alone!
This helps so much. Got dignosed with dsylexia and I always felt like it wasn't valid because it was dignosed when I was a kid. When I got my dignose I nearly cried everything finally made sense.
See exactly ...those questions make me really really anxious. 1. "Tell me why are you here today ?" 2. "What do you expect to get out of this evaluation ?" I just cannot convince my mind that there is no wrong answer to those questions but I do not get why it is necessary to begin with those questions
I only know i have ADHD and Dyslexia at the age of 38! I have been struggling all my life to understand why i act differently from others! Enrolled university and get my bachelor's degree just to prove I'm NOT stupid! !!!!! Argh, honestly I wish when I was 18 years years old. I definitely will change my career! Avoid paperwork and focus more on my business!
My report cards always read " keen student needs to apply herself more" . I would always breakout with a fever before math tests. It's honestly nice to know that I'm not just stupid as I've heard all these years :'(
I had an official dyslexia diagnose last year, for me was difficult to accept it because that made me feel I will never be good enough, I work very hard at university, so far it is going well because I have a mentor and I have dyslexia support tutor. I am learning to accept myself as I am but I am worried because I really want to be confidence, I have anxiety each time I have a new challenge, each time is sort of torture because I struggling with this anxiety. I have watched a lot of video that encourage dyslexics, to see if this can help me to feel I can do it and to love having dyslexia. I do not like people say it is a disability. we are allowed to be different to have our own rhythm or speed. As a human we are unique why we define things all the time and we called it disorder, disability if we do not fit in the "average". I do not want to put myself a label for society to understand we do not have to be the same everyone.
I have Phd and dyslexia, life sucks. NOBODY understands me in my field. You smart, you have PhD and you don't know what hand is right vs. left without pointing it. I will never be able to progress in my field of work. I HATE writing, but I LOVE doing science, design projects etc. etc. Do you know how many times I heard: You need to read more so you will learn grammar. Funny fact, I read 10 books/year and TONS of scientific papers... There is ZERO understanding of this issues in academic environment.
Last year, at the age of 37, my mother told me that I was diagnosed as dyslexic in the 3rd grade. I never knew anything about it. My feelings were bitter sweet. It was such a relief to be alive to put a name with what I had been experiencing all these years. Bitter because I feel if the proper steps had been taken, I would be so much happier and advanced in my life. I would like to get diagnosed or at least tested now. I just don't know where to start or what to do. I feel like this has a major role in my depression and anxiety.... I am also embarrassed. I understand that my mother was confused because prior to the 3rd grade, we were living in a different state, and I was an honor roll student . I guess she felt the move just made things worse for me.
I’m trying to get a diagnosis currently but it is so unbelievably hard to realize after all these years I’ve found out that I might have these disabilities for so long I have thought I was just dumb but it’s a relief knowing that might not be why
Thank you for sharing, I felt so alone. I'm certainly in college, but I struggled so much. I have one more year left, but I noticed it's getting harder and harder for me. I really need to get help, but I was afraid for some reason. This video gave me hope and really motivated to take those steps. Thank you so much!!!
I just picture how i read. I read from left to right. So I just move my eyes very lightly from left to right if I need to know. Or I do it in my head. That way it's more subtile then using my hands and forming an L shape.😅
This didn't work for me when i was a little kid because i also had dysgraphia so you end up with reversals and can't remember which way the 'L' is supposed to go. It was all very upsetting at the time...
Struggled all my life Got diagnosed when I was 11 . Have got to a high level in my company i work for . I'm the one who fixes the issues and thinks of solutions. Get told they wouldn't know what to do without But when going for promotion I fail on writing paperwork. Paid 300pounds for a adult test to have "reasonable changes made" . Has it made any difference. So stuck in a rut . Was going to leave but they put my wage up. But the promotion means more to me than money . As it's an achievement I cant Reach Such is life
Same here, I'm a fixer in my field, but I can't progress since I need to write grants... I have Phd and dyslexia, life sucks. NOBODY understands me in my field. You smart, you have PhD and you don't know what hand is right vs. left without pointing it. I will never be able to progress in my field of work. I HATE writing, but I LOVE doing science, design projects etc. etc.

I've been diagnosed with dyslexia but not ADHD. I don't understand this because my attention span and short term memory or non existent. 39 year old still struggling at work, I take ages to do anything. Its so frustrating and embarrassing.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia in the age of 10 now I am 25 and I am still struggling with it its really hard to memorise what I read and learn because I forget most of things the next day and I don't think that I crack my competitive exam 😢😢 I am just scared......

I was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADD when I was in elementary school. I will say, I learned right and left some time around college. But I used it and made it a point to have an image; when I say right I see my right hand extends fingers. Same for left. I made sure to learn it when my right would mistake them, so I knew one of us NEEDED to know which one is which. But when thinking of East and West, I think East = Right hand....so West is Left hand. I ALWAYS have to think East first. No matter what, West comes after East...even when I say North, South, East, West or East, West, North, South.
I have dyslexia and ADHD. Sadly I only knew about this when I was in my mid 30s, many years after I graduated and at the point, in the middle of my banking career. Luckily, I chose the right course to study in university (Maths and Economics) that requireds less lingual skills. Also I worked in the sales departments all these years, so less reading and writing required. I would sad I did not choose the wrong course or wrong career and fortunately did not struggle alot despite my dyslexia. But I did struggle though. If I knew that I have dyslexia at a younger age, things maybe be easier for me?
I have dyslexia. I used to have a tutor for a few years in elementary but we couldn’t continue because we can’t afford it, but that’s not the problem. School has treated me like I’m dirt, they put me in these “special classes” witch took me out of the normal class for about an hour and “thought me” when I told my tutor about some of the stuff they were teaching me she said it was actually damaging my learning, and the special classes where ran by recess teachers. My second grade teacher thought It was funny that I had dyslexia so she told the entire class I had it multiple times, I’ve been bullied a lot by the smart kids because of it, So when I got into middle people forgot or just stopped caring, and of course my grades suffered because I didn’t know how to do it. But in 7th grade my science teacher was the best teacher I have ever had, he introduced me to my passion for science and skiing he was the beat part of school for me so far. Now it’s 2020 and I’m in 8th grade with alright grades just trying to make it thought life and trying to improve my self worth and accepting I’m not going to be able go to college, I’m going through a midlife crisis at 14 lol All o want to do is be normal Edit: sorry for poor grammar, I’m trying Edit: my parents are get very angry when I get a low score on something or don’t turn it In and they expect me to have all A and to be the next Einstein
Hi An Apple, We're sorry you've been struggling for so long. It's hard enough when you learn and think differently, but to deal with bullying is even worse. We're glad, however, that you've been able to find a teacher who supported you and gave you some hope. We hope that you can continue to grow and thrive and find more support that you need. Let us know if you have any questions. Best, The team at Understood
@@UnderstoodOrg thank you so much for your kinda words, I think I may have adhd, my dad also has dyslexia and he also finds it hard to focus on stuff like me, what are the symptoms to adhd? Is it common to have adhd with dyslexia?
I wish I was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child I would have done better in elementary. I learned I had dyslexia in college I got disability accommodation which help me get through nursing school.
I’m 54 and I have dyslexia and adhd. I was in school in the 70s and 80s when they didn’t know very much about kids with learning issues. I basically was treated like garbage. I was cast a poor bird that couldn’t fly. Everything was negative!! I was in classes with retarded kids which really hurt my self esteem. The other kids laughed at me and called me stupid. My schooling was incredibly abusive and I have CPTSD from my childhood. Like j in said I’m 54 and I’m feeling coming to grips with all of it and I’m finally finding peace in my life.
Hi Michael Knapp, Thanks for sharing your story. We're so glad you're learning more about your differences. Being in classes with other students with learning and thinking differences in that time was very different than our classes now. Best, The team at Understood
I found out in my 40’s too. It was such a relief to confirm the suspicion I had as to why I struggled so much with reading & writing. I didn’t learn to read until I was 13, this was after being tested with a Stamford Binet test at 12 & told I scored the level of a 16 yr old! 😃 I still say words wrong, especially acronyms. I still struggle with the letters B & D, left from right, & my writing & reading speed is still slow. These are the things that have to be thought about, I can’t just do them on auto pilot like most others can. Reading is especially draining. Thank goodness for audio books!
I just found out that I am Dyslexic After going through Life filling dumb, Inadequate, Abandoned. Divorced from 10 years of marriage with two boys, I am now fighting to get on my feet, a place of my own for 50/50 Custody over my boys. It is killing me to not be able to hold my boy, to talk to my boys, and wake up in the morning from them jumping on my bed. I am writing a Manga comic about my life, wrapped in fiction to help me vent my frustration. I have graduated high school bin to college. I am a Whole life fashion designer of 20 years, graphic artist for 15 years & animator for 2 years. Is there anyone out there that can help Me organize my life? o yea and i am ADD
I have problem reading and spelling all the time since I started kindergarten. I was called stupid ... lazy until a point I actually believe that. But when I was 14 I started reading my own way . Although it took me one whole year to finish a short story but it was an achievement for me . Now I’m 24 and I’m an auditor in one of the big 4. I can’t say I’m not struggling . In fact sometimes my dyslexia shows . I cannot read document fast .... I have spelling that seniors find it questionable. There was a time where my manger gave me something to read and later wanted me to explain what I just read ..... I couldn’t explain anything . Sometimes I even think if I should resign . But I am fighting with myself . I don’t want this weakness of mine to define me . To be honest I’m thinking of getting myself officially diagnosed. I was afraid back then because I don’t want this to affect my career opportunities but now I think I should confront it...... still having dilemma
Hello Jade Ong, Thank you for sharing your story with us. Deciding whether or not to get diagnosed is a challenging decision. You might find this article "Perspectives: How did you find out you learn and think differently?" u.org/3exWmID It includes how 8 other young adults discovered and dealt with how they learn and think differently. I was 21 when I got tested for add it turns out I had it all along, but what drs reccomend is medication and therapy just taking the meds won’t take the issue away

I think I have dyslexia. I thought I was just stupid but I have a hard time focusing and learning new things hard reading also even with words I know already. Sometimes I ask someone what is a certain thing and they tell me and I’m like wtf it’s so obvious how did i not know that or see it. I don’t want to tell anyone tho. They will think I’m lying just so they won’t think I’m stupid.
Hello rimzia batool vardarli, Thanks for your question. It's hard to say how long it might take, but that is a great question to ask the IEP team if your child has an IEP. One part of the IEP are the goals, and this can give you an idea of how long the team thinks it might take to accomplish various milestones. Although most IEP goals are set for the entire year, so if they think it will take several years that won't be indicated. You might find the article "Setting Annual IEP Goals: What You Need to Know" u.org/3a09VQl useful. If you have other questions please don't hesitate to contact us. Best, The team at Understood

I am gonna be 19 next month. I also face a lot of difficulties in studies. At first I thought it was pressure and stress from my life problems. I failed my Olevels and Alevel. I felt really ashamed that, I am still hiding the fact to most of my family and friends. Ever since I went to grade 7 ,I have been forcing myself to study. I tried so hard but no one believes it.I feel really guilty and hopeless sometimes. Everytime someone finds out about my results, their response completely shatters me. Lately I kind of started to feel that it's dyslexic but I m not sure .I just don't know what to do next .My anxiety kills me but I don't want my family to know anything about it.I really don't want to talk to my friends about it too. Most of the time I just want to feel normal and ends up writing things like this in comment sections and deleting. If anyone know a good next step pls give a reply to this comment 😁

See how this video was possible. Somebody was needed, sharing the own experience, whos family founded her daughter to go to therapy, still finding reasons, only. Then figure out whos not going this way and getting it worse by suppressing it.
I have a theory. In this world, in a first world country like the US, the way that you are expected to think and behave... the way that we understand ourselves as being "normal" or not, well, that works for a percentage of the population. Maybe a good portion of the population. But there is this word: Diversity. We speak of diversity most often in terms of race, ethnicity and culture but in accordance with evolutionary theories aren't we, as a species, expected to come into the world in diverse ways? The same way that squirrels, elephants, moths and viruses arrive into this existence, in diverse fashion. Skin color, body shape or perhaps how about being born with six or seven fingers on one hand...how about three, how about webbing between the fingers? Some members of our species are tall and thin, some are short and squat, some are better at hearing, smell or sight... How about my theory here that some of us homo sapiens have brains that don't work the way that the majority in our current societies do. In a way that the society needs it's members to work. And, as they say, therein lies the rub (for some of us anyway). AND as my theory goes, we dyslexics and ADHDers are shunted aside in a world where a reasoning, objective mind or where a brain that can take in (with our five senses) specific details and repeat the information back out with little difficulty, that brain (and the person who owns it) has an advantage. I'm talking about test taking in the current iteration of our society here. We test each other for all sorts of reasons, and that's a topic on it's own but in the current inclination for educating our young, we want to see that you can regurgitate information when called upon. That's a primary value in our current form of educational instruction and it serves the purpose of certain ideological and economic premises but like the good tasting macintosh apple or carrot with a misshapen form, we ADHDers get tossed aside and discarded if we can't answer the questions. Yeah, I know, BooHoo. The end of my theory goes like this: Quantum Mechanics has, as one of its posited theories, the idea that there are infinite numbers of worlds ongoing concurrently (the Many Worlds Theory) but we are only aware of the one we are in. It's the stuff of science fiction and Christian religious dogma (heaven) but if we ADHDers exist in any or all of those other worlds, perhaps there is the possibility that we are the rulers of some of them. We're the authors of the story...the IT that everyone has to get. We get to toss all those academic freaks who can regurgitate information willy-nilly right into the compost pile. We'll say: "Come back, you freak when you can't spell or read books written by William Faulkner. We will find you useful when you can't tell me what the time of day is or which is right or left." Vengence is my sayth the ADHDer Allow me to point out though, that I married one of those genius academics with photographic memory and as hard as I have tried to screw up that relationship with my craziness, we are still married after all these years (going on fifty). This young Chinese woman, good for her to see herself as having these diagnoses but hopefully she will not see them as disabilities and she will not think of herself as lacking. My guess is that if she comes from a traditional Chinese family, she will hit a brick wall and they will not understand her explanations.

Now at 38 I'm learning French and not doing too bad for an old man lol. Got a 3.0 in French 112 and can at least translate a lot of French sentences. Wondering if it was Dyslexia

I wonder if Yimeng experiences different difficulties in chinese and English. For years i thought my problem was English is not my native language and i didn't learned it well enough. Now i began to doubt...
I'm also fluent in two languages, though I wasn't always. Growing up in Italy, I had a lot of trouble with Italian, leading to me having a private tutor for years. In High school I failed Italian, leading to me having to repeat the second year.
Hello! Many people discover they have learning and thinking differences as an adult, and you're not alone. Adult evaluations for learning and thinking differences must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agency, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program. Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and thinking differences: u.org/2yeNiZq
Hi The Olive branch Eric - Thanks for reaching out. Many people discover they have learning and thinking differences as an adult, and you're not alone. It might help to seek an evaluation for ADHD and/or Dyslexia. Adult evaluations for learning and thinking differences must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. You can learn more about these professionals here: u.org/2yeNiZq. You might also want to look at these Understood resources about how Dyslexia (u.org/2J3ayi9) and ADHD (u.org/3dcUHYs) are diagnosed after high school. If an evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost: 1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost. 2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost. Finally, you may want to consider connecting with these organizations in your area: LDA: ldaamerica.org/support/state-local-affiliates/ IDA: eida.org/ida-branches/ We hope this helps. Hi @lol, Thanks for your question. You can't be diagnosed with dyslexia online, but if you do have a concern or think you may learn or think differently, your best bet is to talk to your parents, a trusted teacher, or your doctor. Even if it turns out you don't have a learning or thinking difference, they can help you by providing you with other supports. It sounds like you are trying to take charge of your own learning and thinking differences. Please consider sharing your concerns you expressed to us with your parent, guardian or school counselor. One good article to share with them is: I’m Concerned My Child Might Have learning and thinking differences. Now What? u.org/2a8583R You might also consider checking one of our partner programs, Friends of Quinn (www.friendsofquinn.com/ld-resources), an online community that offers resources and support for young adults with learning differences, as well as for the people who love them. Wishing you the best of luck!
The worst part is when people don't believe you. Most Learning disabilities aren't visible. Most teacher assume your lazy or you need tudoring. I'm just glad things are changing.
Hi Rachelstorrersings - Thanks for your comment. Being called lazy is one of the more common myths surrounding ADHD. You might want to read this article and point to it when others think you're being lazy. u.org/3478zjv We hope this helps. Best, The team at Understood
This far it's just my guest that I'm dyslexcia, two years ago i visited a psychology clinic to get some evaluation cause i'm also feel so stress about how people see me as a stupid one.. But then they gave me another therapy so then till now i'm still wondering if i'm really dyslexcia or not
Hello Annie Bhagwani, Thanks for your question. However, it's difficult to say how much an evaluation would cost. If you're looking for an adult diagnosis, you might consider talking to your doctor to see if it is covered under your insurance. Schools will do evaluations for children under the age of 18 if they see learning differences. We hope this helps. Best, The team at Understood
Hi Paola - Thanks for reaching out. Many people discover they have learning and thinking differences as an adult, and you're not alone. Adult evaluations for learning and thinking differences must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agencies, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program. Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and thinking differences: u.org/2FQ354q If the evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost: 1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost. 2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost. We hope this helps. Hi Amanda Tronyers, We're sorry you're sad. But hopefully having the diagnosis will help you to thrive going forward. Let us know if you have any questions. Best, The team at Understood
Hello. Can anyone help me to connect with the advisor in this video? I really want to talk to her. I am a dyslexic from Indonesia. Diagnosed when I was studying in the UK. The support is very poor in Indonesia and I want to raise awareness and support other people with the same issue here. I even need more help for myself with my dyslexia. I really need to talk to an expert who can give me advice like her. She seems very helpful. Her email or her name would be helpful. Thanks so much.

I need help!! 1st of all, sorry for my bad english. I suspect my wife had dyslexia. She is 32 yrs old and she dont even know how many minutes a hour, how many weeks a month, and how many months a year. & she is confusing when im asking her about any simple numbers to "equal, times, devide, minus and plus" This is my 1st time ever met people who really really bad at a very simple math. This is really bad.., she dont even know how to spend money, how to manage times. Im tired to teach her for a million times. We always arguing each other because of that matter. She is in her own world. I always felt depressed when i think of her weakness . I am not rich, i work for my parents, for my children & her. i really want her do any job to help me out for our living costs. Owh ya, the reason why she is jobless is because she is upset with previous job why her monthly sallary is little than she expected. She think there is 50 days a month i guess.. What should i do know? Is there any medication that can cure her? I really appreciate for any advise.

Maybe she can get a job as a personal trainer if she is the hyperactive type. It's a serious problem to not be able to do simple math so the jobs must not include too much reading or counting. Something that involve hyperactivity might help
Talking to a person (left brain person) about dyslexia has no clue because she's not dyslexic. Its like requiring a duck to breath under was and being evaluated by a bunch of fish who can Breathe under water. "What wrong with you 'duck' you can’t Breathe under water? You must have a disability!" I'm have dyslexia, my prespetive is 'you' are the weird one. You have the ability to remember useless unrelated fact and can play trivia pursuit really well but have extreme difficulty solving simple problems.
What if you’re 45 and have suffered years of psychological and spiritual abuse does someone recover after finally being made aware that dyslexia is the key cause of their depression? I was told that dyslexia was separate from adhd and reading and comprehension. Now I’m very depressed and my dyslexic mistakes keep setting me back that I don’t even want to take a test! I cant read, write or type worth a damn. It’s taken me 25 min to type this much out. Fk life right!
Dear above all odds, We're sorry you're struggling. It is not uncommon for conditions like anxiety and depression to occur in people who have learning and thinking differences. You are not alone. You might want to consider talking to your doctor or a medical health professional. They can give you referrals to counselors to help you get the support you need. We hope this helps. Best, The team at Understood
Hey buddy i have the same set of circumstances. I know the struggles. Most of us who suffer from these ailments are very strong in other parts of the brain. I bet you are creative. Do you ever paint, draw or build.? Even if u think you may be no good, its a good escape.
I don't know why she's so happy to know that, as people would view her differently if she tells others, esp. during Chinese. People's view of phycological are still very behind compared to developed countries as Canada and US, I would not recommend her to mention anything to anybody excluded her very close families. Otherwise, trust me, she is going to be discriminated.
Asian moms be like: it's all in your head!!!! Lol , good luck to this lady and all people who have Dyslexia! Innovators, out of the box thinkers and problem solvers.
I have dyslexia and ADHD. It definitely feels nice to know I’m not alone
we all in this together!
Ya dood it frickn sucks growing up without others like you it’s nice to know there’s others that also struggled and I think we could probably help each other out
Me too 😊 I digonised with ADHD , dyslexia and depression as well... don't worry you are not alone
Worse than the disease
Is that no one Understand how you feel
@@krecikowi Progress? You can. People are stupid and think that being dyslexic just means you read backwards. I'd be happy to have a PhD it took me 10 years to get my undergrad going to school full time. UGH.
@@NovaDoll my best advice is... to do best you can. There is NO WAY people will accommodate us in the work place. BTW. Mary Christmas 👍🎁🎅
Mole Why is it alright that they don’t make accommodations though?
So, so true. I'm 74 years old and people who have known me all my life, just don't get it!
I can relate. ADHD and Dyslexia at 50 years of age is still an uphill struggle. Prayers for those who don’t understand
I can definitely relate
You got this Mika!!!
It can be quite empowering giving a name what you've been struggling with.

I have Phd and dyslexia, life sucks. NOBODY understands me in my field. You smart, you have PhD and you don't know what hand is right vs. left without pointing it. I will never be able to progress in my field of work. I HATE writing, but I LOVE doing science, design projects etc. etc.
I’m going through the same thing and I love science to
im in radiology working in nuclear medicine and i do brain scans in spect I have done a brain test to see if i have adhd
@@no-de3lg there is a definitive test for it? Didn't think so.
Oh i have a PhD too in humanities. I am thinking of getting a diagnosis.
1. "Tell me why are you here today ?"
2. "What do you expect to get out of this evaluation ?"
I just cannot convince my mind that there is no wrong answer to those questions but I do not get why it is necessary to begin with those questions
Yeah I thought that too.
Bloody obvious answers though but made my hair stand up
Like your boss wants to talk with you before firing you
Sounds like I’m in trouble
I only know i have ADHD and Dyslexia at the age of 38! I have been struggling all my life to understand why i act differently from others! Enrolled university and get my bachelor's degree just to prove I'm NOT stupid! !!!!! Argh, honestly I wish when I was 18 years years old. I definitely will change my career! Avoid paperwork and focus more on my business!
My report cards always read " keen student needs to apply herself more" . I would always breakout with a fever before math tests. It's honestly nice to know that I'm not just stupid as I've heard all these years :'(
Thanks for taking the time to share this with us romany desilva. You are not alone.

65 years for me!

I have dyslexia too and it has been so hard me accept myself .
Don't know if it helps anyone but I know my left from right because your index finger and thumb make an "L" on your Left hand.
This is a great point to share, thanks Sara A.
“L” LEFT. 👌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👍🏻
I just picture how i read. I read from left to right. So I just move my eyes very lightly from left to right if I need to know. Or I do it in my head. That way it's more subtile then using my hands and forming an L shape.😅
wow thats a good one !!!!
This didn't work for me when i was a little kid because i also had dysgraphia so you end up with reversals and can't remember which way the 'L' is supposed to go. It was all very upsetting at the time...
Struggled all my life
Got diagnosed when I was 11 .
Have got to a high level in my company i work for . I'm the one who fixes the issues and thinks of solutions. Get told they wouldn't know what to do without
But when going for promotion I fail on writing paperwork.
Paid 300pounds for a adult test to have "reasonable changes made" . Has it made any difference. So stuck in a rut . Was going to leave but they put my wage up. But the promotion means more to me than money . As it's an achievement I cant Reach
Such is life
Same here, I'm a fixer in my field, but I can't progress since I need to write grants... I have Phd and dyslexia, life sucks. NOBODY understands me in my field. You smart, you have PhD and you don't know what hand is right vs. left without pointing it. I will never be able to progress in my field of work.
Thanks for sharing this with us RyanTreks. This is a great visual tip!
Now it’s 2020 and I’m in 8th grade with alright grades just trying to make it thought life and trying to improve my self worth and accepting I’m not going to be able go to college, I’m going through a midlife crisis at 14 lol
All o want to do is be normal
Edit: sorry for poor grammar, I’m trying
Edit: my parents are get very angry when I get a low score on something or don’t turn it In and they expect me to have all A and to be the next Einstein
Hi An Apple, We're sorry you've been struggling for so long. It's hard enough when you learn and think differently, but to deal with bullying is even worse.

I found out in my 40’s too. It was such a relief to confirm the suspicion I had as to why I struggled so much with reading & writing.
I didn’t learn to read until I was 13, this was after being tested with a Stamford Binet test at 12 & told I scored the level of a 16 yr old! 😃
I still say words wrong, especially acronyms. I still struggle with the letters B & D, left from right, & my writing & reading speed is still slow.

Sometimes I ask someone what is a certain thing and they tell me and I’m like wtf it’s so obvious how did i not know that or see it. I don’t want to tell anyone tho. They will think I’m lying just so they won’t think I’m stupid.

It's so realistically sorted out! I wonder how long it might take to treat mild dyslexic disorders in children??? Can anyone share???
Hello rimzia batool vardarli,
Thanks for your question.

Hi Shiba Shiii, We're sorry you're struggling with this. It can be tough dealing with the emotions that surround these issues. One place you can start is with the article "Perspectives: How did you find out you learn and think differently? " u.org/3exWmID It has videos from several people describing how they discovered they learn and think differently. There are also other articles in the "Self-Discovery" u.org/3dy8bgN topic of Understood by Us that might help.
If you want to have a more private conversation, please feel free to email us at Understood (support@understood.org).
We hope this helps.

We will find you useful when you can't tell me what the time of day is or which is right or left." Vengence is my sayth the ADHDer
Allow me to point out though, that I married one of those genius academics with photographic memory and as hard as I have tried to screw up that relationship with my craziness, we are still married after all these years (going on fifty).
This young Chinese woman, good for her to see herself as having these diagnoses but hopefully she will not see them as disabilities and she will not think of herself as lacking. My guess is that if she comes from a traditional Chinese family, she will hit a brick wall and they will not understand her explanations.

I've a student in 5th standard suffering from dyslexia and his handwriting is not understandable. His memory is low and doesn't remember anything. I am watching videos now to find ways to help him learn. Surprisingly, I've come across this video.
I struggled learning to read until 3rd grade but then read college level in elementary school. I also struggled to learn to ride a bike until 10. Now at 38 I'm learning French and not doing too bad for an old man lol. Got a 3.0 in French 112 and can at least translate a lot of French sentences. Wondering if it was Dyslexia

@@UnderstoodOrg thank u. Lately i got ur reply.
Im mark 18 yrs experience this same case badly i want to give up and i have depression now and thinking if i want to continue this life.....
Thanks for sharing your honest feelings with us, Mark Warren. Struggling with a learning and thinking difference can be very difficult at any age. It’s important to know you’re not alone, and that having support from others can be very helpful. We encourage you to start a conversation in one of our groups where other community members can provide some feedback from you: facebook.com/Understood/groups
Also, it's not uncommon for people with learning and thinking differences to feel depressed or anxious at times. If you’re feeling like you’re in crisis or need immediate help, here are some resources to look into:
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org) has resources to direct you to local crisis centers and to speak with you and your son either on the phone or via the online Lifeline Crisis Chat: www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/gethelp/lifelinechat.aspx.
PBS has a great state-by-state resource guide to help, too: www.pbs.org/wnet/cryforhelp/featured/resources-hotlines-and-web-sites-for-teens/11/
The Crisis Text Line (www.crisistextline.org/) offers support for teens 24/7. All they have to do is text the word listen to 741-741. If your teen is struggling but isn’t ready to talk to you, this may be a good place for him to turn.
Please know we're here to support you and to make sure you have the resources you need during this very difficult time.
I have the same thing same as her but i never get treated Because i didnt know that theres a word dyslexia and i dint where to go just to seek advice
I'm afraid to go to a psychologist or a doctor because I don't how to start a conversation when he/she says "what brings you here?/ what do you feel?" ... I don't know how to express myself to others :(
Hi Kimi Dora, thanks for your comment. We understand it can be difficult to find the right words to explain how you're doing. While Understood was written with parents in mind, you may find this piece helpful: How to Talk to Your Child About Learning and Attention Issues u.org/2YscBCB

I think I’ve wanted the strategies for dyslexia for years, but did not know where to find them.
read books/works of harold levinson. dyslexia can be treated.
Where do I get evaluated? How much does it cost?
I wonder if Yimeng experiences different difficulties in chinese and English. For years i thought my problem was English is not my native language and i didn't learned it well enough. Now i began to doubt...
To be fair, english is a second language for her. Is this taken into consideration? Good on her for speaking, reading and writing in 2 languages.
I'm also fluent in two languages, though I wasn't always. Growing up in Italy, I had a lot of trouble with Italian, leading to me having a private tutor for years. In High school I failed Italian, leading to me having to repeat the second year.
Where can I come to get tested? I am in Ontario Canada. Can some one please help? Thank you ❤️🙏
How does one go about getting evaluated/help. Meaning, do you go to your primary care physician?
If an evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost:
1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost.
2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost.
Finally, you may want to consider connecting with these organizations in your area:

Wow what a lovely video.
Can anyone tell me if I have dyslexia or not? I have no problem in reading or writing, I also write spellings correctly. I had learned to read and write a little before going to school, I used to read poems and stories easily But now I have a lot of problems in maths and I cant remember anything just by reading it once , I have to read again and again to remember it, and i have no intrest and talent in art im not creative and my grades are also decreasing . please tell me if I have dyslexia or I am just overthinking about It about It .
Now What? u.org/2a8583R
You might also consider checking one of our partner programs, Friends of Quinn (www.friendsofquinn.com/ld-resources), an online community that offers resources and support for young adults with learning differences, as well as for the people who love them.
Wishing you the best of luck!
I'm 41 I have Dyslexicer still no idea what my talent is any videos on this please
I want to do this I think i have dyslexia, where can I do this
Me.
I don't know I might be dyslexic. I'm 26 and I don't know what I'm doing with my life. Hopefully getting tested will help. 😭
Think the worst thing is not the ADHD or dyslexia, rather the put downs and loss of confidence .
You might want to read this article and point to it when others think you're being lazy. u.org/3478zjv

This far it's just my guest that I'm dyslexcia, two years ago i visited a psychology clinic to get some evaluation cause i'm also feel so stress about how people see me as a stupid one.. But then they gave me another therapy so then till now i'm still wondering if i'm really dyslexcia or not
How much it cost for test?
Hello Annie Bhagwani,
Thanks for your question. However, it's difficult to say how much an evaluation would cost. If you're looking for an adult diagnosis, you might consider talking to your doctor to see if it is covered under your insurance. Schools will do evaluations for children under the age of 18 if they see learning differences.
We hope this helps. Best,
The team at Understood

Hi Yunita Nugrahani,
We’re sorry not to be able to connect you directly with Yimeng Cui. But you might consider looking at her website, following them on Facebook or connecting via Twitter.

Sounds like dyscalculia more than dyslexia. Just sayin
Maybe she can get a job as a personal trainer if she is the hyperactive type. It's a serious problem to not be able to do simple math so the jobs must not include too much reading or counting. Something that involve hyperactivity might help
But know, how did you overcome your problems, what realy helped you?
Thanks for your question Claudia Juncker. Are there specific resources you may be looking for? Let us know, we'd be happy to help.
Dear above all odds,
We're sorry you're struggling. It is not uncommon for conditions like anxiety and depression to occur in people who have learning and thinking differences. You are not alone.
You might want to consider talking to your doctor or a medical health professional. They can give you referrals to counselors to help you get the support you need.
We hope this helps.

My whole life I been told I am stupid and lazy and now I see this
In India something like is not even recognized ..and ppl keep on struggling and gets judged al throughout there life
I did not liked the music. It made me feel weird.
Thanks for your feedback ruben tijerina. We'll share this with our team.

Yo what’s wack is the testing coust$
now the funny thing is that they said adults are motivated to come in and find out so was i but i am 15
I prefer watch utube programming tutorial than read the docs bcs its shorten my learning time am i dyslexic or lazy?
