Before I saw any of your tutorials, I was actually dipping my watercolor pencils in the water and applying them that way. So, there is never just one way. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
Michele, the tip about pulling the color INTO the subject instead of toward the edge was exactly what I needed to know. In the PDF (but not in the video), you mentioned, "... or the pigment will just keep traveling and you will get a hard edge." I've been disappointed with the hard edges I get when using wc pencils, even when drawing lightly, and now I know why. Thank you for both the video and the PDF!
Wow that’s a gorgeous detailed & colorful bottom of the Calla Lily that just makes this flower pop. This is definitely my favorite one of the flowers you’ve done for us. Thanks for sharing this with us and making watercolor pencils painting fun & enjoyable for me.
Hi Michelle, I enjoy watching your videos. I am Dutch and also love using Caran d'Ache pencils and recently I wondered what the name actually meant. I was surprised to learn that it was the pseudonym of a French artist and originally came from the Russian 'karandash' , which means pencil ✏.
I was on the fence about taking your watercolor pencil course, but I have changed my mind since viewing this video! This is information packed and I trust your course will be worth my time. Thank you, Michele!
Fabulous! My art with colours started with an old set of water colour pencils during the lockdown. What a lovely journey it has been since. Thanks for this wonderful tutorial.
My favorite part of your painting this delicate flower is that you like to live dangerously when opening your products. Beautiful! I have a calla lily sketched onto a piece of watercolor paper that has just been sitting. Thanks for showing the way, fingers crossed.
Michele I have a set of Derwent Watercolor pencils. No one has shown me.....until now....how to use them properly. I learned a lot by watching you paint this beautiful calla Lily. Thank you💗
Thank you for this very helpful and lovely tutorial! I have been buying these pencils a few at a time, swatching them, and making color charts, but haven't really painted with them yet. It helped me so much to see you actually use them. I tend to paint in more of a loose manner, and paint mostly flowers, so I would love to see you do a loose flower painting using these pencils. Any flower you choose would be just fine. And yes, you are pronouncing Caran d'ache just perfectly! Interesting sidenote: Caran d'ache is not French at all, but the transliteration of the Russian word for pencil, so any giggling over your supposed "French" pronunciation of the word is a bit misplaced. (I have a degree in Russian.) 😊😻👏💐
Wow, that's amazing. I am terrible at languages. I can say a few words in Mandarin, but only because I do martial arts. So I could say 'Crescent Kick' but have no idea how to order a drink :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Lol! The first words I always learn in a language are "Help!" and "Where's the toilet?" "Crescent kick" would not, necessarily, be on the top of my list!" 😆😄😅

HI Michelle, just discovered your tutorials on watercolor paints and pencils, they are so helpful, I tried few myself (beginner and very pleased with me!) started art class late last year for fun, enjoyment and relaxation. I've learnt so mach and really proud of me! thanks
Love this tutorial! Thank you Michele. I have had water color pencils for ages and never used them and now I am going to try. Lovely painting as well!!
Absolutely beautiful!!! I cannot wait until your watercolor pencil class starts!!! I am so ready. I haven't tried that brand as of yet because of the price but I do have the set of Derwent watercolor pencils and oh how I love these pencils!! Thank you again Michele. As always excellent instruction!!
Beautiful painting Michele. And your narrating is very helpful, as well as entertaining. If you've covered everyone's wishlist, could you do something with Derwent Inktense pencils?
I too had a good giggle about “ the flower’s Mother doesn’t need to recognize it” 🤣😹🤣 I don’t know about Americans but Canadians call those “cotton wool” things, cotton pads... I use them mostly to take off nail polish... How dare the “watercolour pencil police” tell you how to use your pencils! There are nuts everywhere!😹😂 I really enjoyed this tutorial! I just tried to paint a watercolour Calla Lily for my sister... It was a white one...so hard to paint a white flower...😩😩
I know there is probably a good reason, but why not use masking fluid for the white lines at the throat of the Lilly? I loved this tutorial, start to finish.
You mean the ones where I used an embossing tool? It's possible, if you mixed the colour off paper, but if you draw across masking fluid with a pencil it is sure to lift.
Michele, Holding a waterbrush in one hand and a hair dryer in the other I was just able to push my scruffy edge lines far neater. Have you tried this? Kristen
If you use a taklon brush or stiffer brush to spread the pencil pigment first then these pencils can disperse without leaving any lines. You can then soften with your normal brush. Of course this is just personal preference, nothing more 😊
Yes, providing you don't take the pencils across the top of it as it may lift. So you could put the masking fluid on the white parts, colour around them but not right up to them and then go across the whole thing with the brush.
😍 Watercolour pencils, yes! Michele, would it be possible to test some watercolour crayons some time, too? There are plenty of new (and strange) watercolour products appearing recently. I have just bumped into watercolour graphite paints 😀🤷♀️
Thank you Michelle for your demonstration packed with useful advice. I wonder if you have any tips on how to print the photo with an accurate colour match. My print is much duller than the computer image.
I find that I need to lighten everything before it prints, my printer prints very dark. If you use something like photoshop or Canva (free) try upping the brightness and increasing the saturation.
I can't recall if I did a background for this one... it may be in a video with other backgrounds. I can't find it, but if you put backgrounds in the search with my name you should find some useful stuff.

What do you find the easiest, most workable type of board to draw and paint on? I was just looking at what you are working on. Maybe a stupid question, but I have been using my desk. Any suggestions, thank you
I have a high desk and a stool, so I can stand if I wish. I use stretched paper on board, I just have a selection of ply and mdf boards. I prefer the ply but it needs to be thick enough not to warp. Both can be heavy but are cheap. You can get more fancy lighter boards from art suppliers.
My water colour pencils are looking very dull and light compared to the bright pink and green of your video. Maybe its the brand or i could just wait for it to dry and use them again?
Thanks once again, Michelle for a wonderful tutorial....I have learned a great deal about painting with water colour pencils....I have posted my version of it o Facebook group page..please let me know your opinion...

As a retired French teacher, I’m getting a bit of a giggle about the pronunciation...you’re very close really. Though I always wonder why so many Brits don’t speak French very well as they live so close to France...I learned to speak it fluently but would’ve cut my right arm off to be able to so easily go over and practice it there, as trips to France are expensive for Americans..
Indeed, I looked up the meaning and it’s not even French! Just something made up from a Russian word. So Michelle has the last laugh...interesting how it was the pseudonym for a famous French cartoonist. At any rate a very informative watercolor pencil tutorial...
I actually don't enjoy France. I want to like France but whenever I go it just seems like England, and the food is a nightmare because I am vegan. France has no time for vegans lol. I am far happier in sunny countries. I have been to Malta a lot, the language is fascinating, seems to be a mix of Italian and Arabic...
