    “Why’d they have to kick the dog”
    Followed by talking about how the scene of child murder wasn’t visceral enough.
    Bro I don’t know what’s wrong with hardcore Fire and Blood fans, but they seem to have forgotten how average audiences are going to feel about the more brutal aspects of GRRM’s work.
    Nobody complained when Catlyn killed Waldor’s Frey’s wife instead of his autistic grandson, or when they aged up Dany so she wasn’t being married off at 14. And those are minor examples.

    I did not know what was going to happen, along with the 4 other people in the room while watching and we were all so tense and left in shock after we watched it.

      I read the book, and while I was expecting more, I still felt it got the job done. Sound effects made it gruesome. Also, Helaena, wouldn’t be acting in a typical way. As Aegon said, “ she’s an enduring mystery.

      If you are put in a traumatic situation like that, you are going to revert back to the most basic human instincts, especially if you weren't expecting to be in that situation. Like how can you expect someone who has a knife to their throat and is being asked which child they would rather kill to be levelheaded or able to stand up to the situation.

    • @ratatoskr9366

      The point is, it could've been a very minor Red Wedding-like scene. It's a pivotal point in the lore of the Dance of Dragons and they treated it like just another scene.
      Imagine Helena walking into the room, and out of nowhere (unless you payed attention to the clues), two creepy like men are holding your two boys at knife point.
      They're not goofy but sinister. They're not idiots but creepy.
      It also is suppose to add to the grey morality of the conflict. Yes Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, yes she seems like the best choice, but she did this horrible act. It's supposed to be her the beginning of her slow dissent into madness.

When something ambiguous they tell you the varying accounts from Maester Glydan, Septon Eustace, Mushroom the court fool. Laenor death, Harrenhall Fire, Daemon & Rhaenyra relationship, Ser Criston betrayal. Each one we get different speculation from those 3 guys on what happened. Others it pretty certain that Martin didn’t intend any ambiguity. Aemon probably killed Luke in cold blood. Daemon definitely arranged this to happened & it wasn’t an accident they knew what room to go in & waited until they showed up & did it in front of Helena & Alicent.

They tend force between her 2 sons which ones to pick & they choose the opposite one.

    Blood and Cheese are suppossed to be idiots. If anything this helps make the Blacks look worse in favor of the Greens. These accidental escelations show how people and families who were literally RAISED with each other can devolve because of mistakes. Because they read the source material lol & the showrunners are clearly want big TV moments but don’t wanna follow certain scenes in source material because that would require either backlash from general public who would hate certain characters ( same exact reason they whitewashed Cersei & Tyrion) or it would require them to write more content. In source material it clear the murders of Aegon son was planned because they knew exactly where to go & who to look for & was waiting in the rooms for them. They weren’t idiots they was hired professionals who Daemon hired.
      Aegon in source material didn’t take an interest in ruling until after Rhaenyra side wins some early victory because he gets scared & wants to be in charge. Most of time he drank & whored.

      Having Rhanerya order the execution of children would not align with her character in the show, even with Luke’s death.

      So, that's the thing. People are comparing it to the Red Wedding a lot. And I can see that comparison in terms of shock factor. The shock factor was huuuge. But the shock factor also comes from the surprise of it all, which, of course, isn't as powerful when you already know that it is coming. The red wedding didn't have just shock factor though. We're talking about characters that we grew to love and we were rooting for. That's not the case for Blood and Cheese, it wasn't going to be like that no matter how it was done.
      As a person who's waiting for the show to end before reading the book, I was shocked to my core by this scene. A toddler getting murdered for basically no reason, with the mother watching and his twin sister sleeping in the bed right next to him. Hearing the sound of that saw chopping off an innocent child's head. I feel like it was one of the most gruesome things I've watched on TV ever, in spite of not being shown the visual of it. The sound, and knowing that it was an innocent chile, is enough for me.

    It would have been way over the top for TV. No way someone wouldnt scream and 500 guards come in and just stop it. The threatening to sexually assault the kid to the mother would come off as them being vulgar for the sake of it. It wouldve been comical. Agree on Heleana's part, could've added some suspense to her fleeing instead of just going to her mom.

    I think the thing I don’t appreciate about the show is how some of the big moments tend to be accidents or not the intended action, like Luke being killed or alicent misunderstanding what the king said and now the jaherys being killed because they couldn’t find aemond, they don’t feel as weighted as they do in the books because everything is much more intentional or perceived as intentional in the book.

I don't think it ruined the show at all, but it's a sign that other things that have to happen via the book, they will not be able to do. But they've also made changes that I really love.
      I'm not going to stop praising the beauty of what they are creating, but I'm more critical of what they will do moving forward, where I was absolutely trusting they could handle this story at the end of season 1. To me that last scene hit just as hard as the book except its a punch to the head and not the gut. I love the change of making one of her kids a girl and her choosing to not lie to save her son- because every other character in this show would have lied to save the boy. But Helaena tells true because thats literally what she does, it might not make sense to anyone else but her prophecies come true. And I like the symbolism of her picking the girl to live bc she must know that had it been Alicent, she wouldn't have picked Helaena, no one ever seems to care about Helaena, its always Ageon this or Aemond that, yet imagine if anyone took the time to listen to Helaena? Her gift is powerful and no one even bothers to just listen. Her telling the truth to protect the girl is like her protecting herself and I love it. And honestly idc how good a child actor is, I dont want them to be slayed on screen. Helaena will still have to face an internal battle bc she did what was right for her not the realm and she will be scrutinised by Ageon for it for sure

    The biggest problem i have is how these showrunners insist on spoonfeeding the plot points to the mindless masses....like maybe have some mysteries or keep things ambiguous and let the audience have theories or figure it out themselves...GoT started out with the whole who killed Jon Arryn and payed it off later...like maybe Blood and cheese were hired by Larys because he was jealous, or by the maesters to speed the war along, or let us just assume it was Daemon instead of having that stupid scene where he smuggles his way into kingslanding ( he was way to important to the war effort to risk going there) and if he was ballsy enough to go that far, why not just do the job himself (he knows the secret tunnels) instead of hiring those blubbering baffoons

I think she was actively having a vision during that showed if she fought they would all die, she chose to keep one child alive.

    I appreciate that y'all are giving your own opinions and aren't parroting the praise others have been giving to this episode, even though I disagree with practically every one of your takes. Admittedly, I didn't the source material for HotD so my expectations are sure to be different than those that have, but personally I don't think I'd enjoy reading a gruesome and cruel description of child murder, it's traumatic enough on it's own without having to get into a nonsensical level of tortuous sadism. The show's version seems at least plausible whereas the book, not so much. Also, Blood and Cheese seem about as dumb as they should be, that is to say, no more and no less than the average person who lives in this world would almost invariably be in this world given the complete lack of attention and regard they receive from those in power. I appreciate that the showrunners seem to have put a lot of thought into each character, it definitely feels, to me, like GRRM has had a much bigger role behind the scenes than he did in the latter seasons of GoT at least.

    I totally agree with the final scene being underwhelming. I don’t think it was how they handled the execution itself, like of course they wouldn’t show it and I found just the sound effects to be super disturbing and impactful. But the overall intensity from the description in the books was just not there. I was waiting to see how they’d sneak in the castle and how hard it would be but nope they just went into a drain and up to an obvious latter and then suddenly they’re in the THRONE ROOM! With the king right there!! Then when they keep sneaking around I was expecting more tension. Finally, once they end up in the room with the queen and her boys, they really should’ve had the scene be longer and had the children be awake for the whole thing. Also the choice to have the mother basically not react past her just saying “no” a couple times then say “they killed the boy.”
    Like.. ‘the boy?’ She didn’t seem to care. I know she’s supposed to be a little spacey and aloof but come on. In the books she loses her shit screaming then goes on to lose her mind over time. This was a moment I was not exactly looking forward to, but was definitely intrigued to see how they’d handle such a gruesome moment. But in the end it just came and went. Felt rushed as hell. When I think of the Red Wedding, the scene isn’t all that long, but it FELT like it just never stopped because every single moment is just so packed with emotion, tension and shock. It made it feel dragged out, like you were there feeling every bolt through your body and dagger in your back. It was just so well directed. I really hope they don’t fumble any more iconic moments because if they did this one justice, EVERYONE would be going crazy over it right now and yet I have yet to hear literally anyone mention it outside of TH-cam breakdown channels.

    @jonnymoses6927 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think the main issue with B&C wasn’t necessarily that it wasn’t gruesome enough. You guys are right in saying that some of the story changes made it worse. Not having alicent there, not giving Helena the choice, and having her dissociate instead of panic were all bad choices.
    But I still think the worst choice was based on perspective of the scene. they paint B&C as the protagonists of the scene. We follow them through the castle and their every move, so nothing is surprising. We should instead be seeing the greens have a normal night in the castle. Show Aemond in his quarters since they’re going after him. Show Helaena taking the children to see Alicent. And then when B&C storm in, it’s almost as if you forgot they were coming in the first place. That’s how you create surprise and tension with the audience, not by following two random characters we’ll never see again on their mini quest.

  • @Brother_James
    @Brother_James 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

    I honestly and truly don't understand book reader's severe disappointment with the Blood & Cheese scene.
    The scene was visceral, it's driving the main plot to the same exact points. The change doesn't significantly impact the plot nor any of its characters and matches the show. Helaena revealing her son to his murderers is STILL incredibly tragic and is STILL going to drive her mad.
    It's fine to be disappointed but the discourse is ridiculous imo. Folks are acting as though Maelor has a significant piece later in the story. This change is being treated as Bruce Wayne somehow still becoming Batman even though his parents lived. It's not nearly as egregious as when Carl Grimes was killed off for no good reason in The Walking Dead show.
    At what point do folks just admit that they're just complaining about every single change just because it's different and not because it actually spells anything significantly different for the plot or its characters?
    Honestly looking for anyone to explain it to me.

    • @ToeKnife166
      @ToeKnife166 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It’s not about the gore, their are small details that were changed that had they been left in would make people hate team black. The show puts the decision to kill the child on blood and cheese.

    • @Brother_James
      @Brother_James 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ToeKnife166 I'd argue that it puts it on Daemon, Not Blood/Cheese. When B/C asked what they should do if they cannot find Aemond, it cut away to another scene. It's heavily implied that the order to kill the prince came from Daemon.
      Your point about it being a way to garner sympathy for the Greens (alongside Aaron in this video) is genuinely the only decent counterpoint I've heard on the matter. It's true, the show is making it too easy to be Team Black. If anything, this move just puts Daemon more in question more than it does Rhaenyra.
      Even then, I think the tragedy of it all speaks more to Alicent/Rhaenyra not specifically wanting it to reach this point but the surrounding circumstances has taken them too far and now the chaos is engulfing everyone even down to children.
      I know some of the shows changes are good, some are bad, and some are understandable. It's just frustrating how minute changes are being referred to as things that "ruin" the entire show when clearly that's not the case. Too hyperbolic for me.
