this is awesome. I always have trouble when fishing with mackerel because they all fall off. i’ve been searching and searching on how to fix this problem. And finally, I found this video. Thank you.😊
Thanks for the feedback and I am glad this video helped. We use fresh bait a lot, and salting bait really helps. Good luck with your fishing and let us know how you get on.
I'm glad you mentioned the fact that Non-Iodized salt is the salt to use. So many people think salt is salt but they're wrong. The salt we all buy and eat is no good for this. The process works but the added chemicals really put the fish off biting the bait.
Just thought I would add my recipe for you, It takes time, but at 73 yo I have plenty of time. I actually catch my own Pilchards, I then soak them in a heavy salt brine with Borax. (I find the borax keeps that lifelike colour and shine on them) I keep the mixture very cold by exchanging frozen plastic bottles . I leave them in for around 3 days. After 3/4 days I remove the pillies, dry them and then pack in salt for another two days. The end result is a pillie that looks as fresh as the day it was caught. I then Vac Seal . This is the only bait I use for snapper and big KJW. Been doing it for the last 30 years. I can leave the packets on the boat for months without freezing. Cheers...
Great idea love I’ve been fishing in the Surf for 50 years. But in Victoria I have been using salted blue bait for many years and I have landed a lot of Salmon with this bait you can purchase the salted blue bait every where. I do not no if you have this bait for sale in S/A if you can get this bait you should try it you might be surprised may be no need to salt pilchards. Regards. Laurie. Tight lines.
Hi love great idea about salting the pilchards if have fished the Surf for over 50 years. You are right about the blue bait being a smaller type of pilchard I use pilchards as well and I will definitely use your method of salting pilchards. Never to Old to learn. Regards. Laurie the Salmon Hunter tight lines.
Hi fishing Sister. I like your idea in putting the pilchards in the zip bag but what I have been for a fue years now I purchased 4 good plastic containers from the reject shop. And I placed the baits in them no need to leave the baits in the plastic bags you can lay out the baits in the container that way they do not get squashed up. You can fit 4 plastic containers in a six pack esky with one frozen block this way the bait keeps for a long time the demensions of the plastic container is 21cm x14cmx4cm. The plastic containers have larsted me for many years I have stored them in and out of the freezer and they have not cracked as yet. So far I have found this method the best way of your bait lasting. Regards. Laurie the Salmon Hunter tight lines.
I feel your pain! We used to do the same thing but now waste very little. Unless the water is really turbulent then nothing stays on and it's best to go with lures lol
@@fishingsister We use lures to catch Australian salmon. I love lure fishing!!! Going to try your float rig method with lures as in area we lure fish in is notorious for snags. Do you use your berley spring/cage with lures? FYI Inverloch VIC/Anderson Inlet has a great group of women fishing. Many of us learnt from our partners or in my case my father. First time fishing in 40 years and I'm hooked all over again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Learning so much.
@@tracyatwarratahstree Thanks for such lovely feedback! First time fishing in 40 years -how great :) Would love to hear how you go using lures under a float. We do this with squid jigs often, for the same reason. We have not used berley springs with lures but I don't see why not? Could be effective. Just FYI we have a closed facebook group that is a good forum for chats like this.
I think the bought salted pilchards are as good. We generally use the ones from the shop. We salted our own lastime as we could not buy the salted pilchards😉
We usually we have them out of the fridge. Only if it is really hot we may keep them cool until they are salted. Then put them in zip lock bags with a bit of salt...don't need you keep them cool as the salt is a preservative.
I've been watching alot of fishing videos on TH-cam, you guys are in my top 3. Love from Munno Parra Adelaide.
Thanks! That means a lot. Have you recently moved to Adelaide?
@@fishingsister No been in Adelaide all my life but has a nice 6 months fishing at Nossa Queensland.
Hi Shaun, can I post the first part of your comment on insta an FB etc ? Shuch a great quote.....

I've always hated using pilchards, because they're so soft. After watching your video, I can't wait to salt my own!
Give it ago and let us know how you get on....and the latest tip is to trim their tail fins so they don't spin so much in the water!
@@fishingsister , and when casting 🎣

Thanks Richard. We have started buying pool salt to save money and that works well!
@@fishingsister That's great, I've just checked and pool salt isn't iodized so you will get better results with it 😃
Yes and better on the hip pocket too 😄

Hi John thanks for your recipe! Think I might try that. Adding borax sounds like a neat trick!
Thank u sister u make my understanding of salting fish like an expert
Thanks! Works well with other bait too such as cockles

Thats the way to go, i would use the left over fluid in burley, im sure it would work very well.......
That is a great idea! Will try that next time 😊

Hi there not sure if we get blue bait here. I have never looked for it. Sounds like small version of pilchard. Will check it out!

Great idea 🤩
Great video. Are the fresh pilchard more attractive to fish than the salted ones?
We find the salted ones work just as good and they don't fall off as often. For most of our Australian Salmon videos we use salted pillies! Martin.
Yep, as Martin said, the salted ones work just as well, but better as they stay on longer.
Hi the keep juices and spray on bait before casting into the water and see what happens
Good idea!
I'm going to try this. I use pilchards for fishing in the Anderson Inlet in VIC. Always wasting half my bait after a fishing trip.
I feel your pain! We used to do the same thing but now waste very little. Unless the water is really turbulent then nothing stays on and it's best to go with lures lol

Oh wow I was getting real hungry watching how nice those look inside after salting 😛
Well the fish looove them!
Great video - just subbed!
Thanks! These palted pillies are the best. Will be catching salmon with them this weekend...I hope lol 😆
New to your channel. From Englehart, Ontario, Canada.
Hi! Warmer times ahead for you. We're coming into the winter salmon fishing time...so much fun 👍
Very interesting. Once you have salted the pillies (or the salted ones you bought) do you keep them in the freezer for future fishing trips?
Yes, we put the pilles in the in the ziploc bags and then in the freezer for next time👍
What about if you buy pilchard salted already are they as good or salting fresh ones your self is better
I think the bought salted pilchards are as good. We generally use the ones from the shop. We salted our own lastime as we could not buy the salted pilchards😉
Can you buy them near you?
When they are sitting in the salt do you keep them out or in the fridge? Great video 👌

What if the pilchards have been frozen and thawed already, is it still worth salting?
Good question....I think it's still worth doing as long as they are not going off (bad). We did that last week and I caught a 58cm salmon😉
Hi do bcf pilles work/servo I live in a rural area so can’t find them easy
Yes, thats exaxtly what its for as the packet ones go soggy👍
@@fishingsister thank you so much
That liquid/oil at the bottom looks good for a scent trail
Yes good idea!
What's the largest size fish you can salt? Would an 8 or 10 inch Spanish mackerel salt over night? Would it take 2 days for a bigger fisf?
I would have thought a couple of days. I have cut Australian Salmon into bait sized pieces and then salted them fir bait and that was 2 days😉
Thanks
Do you freeze it when you salted them
Yes we keep some in the fridge then freeze the rest
If we are camping we just keep them in the tent out of the sun 👍
Use non iodised salt. That Liquid put in a spray bottle with equal parts water is good to spray on the beach sand to raise beach worms.
Thanks for the tip about the worms. We will give it a go. And yep, non iodized is the way to go👍
@@grahamvoght9294 does that liquid have a shelflife?
@ I usually keep it in the freezer until I go worming. Usually a month at the most but it may last longer with that amount of salt.
@grahamvoght9294 I really want to learn to get those beach worms! Best bait ever. I've found its way harder than it looks 😂
@ have you tried using worm pliers, Alvey put out some good ones. Not a bad way to start out.
I use pool salt over and over again
Yes. Excellent point. Much cheaper too. Thanks for the comment 👍
Brine is so much better
Do you mean brined pilchards...can you explain why as they also soft?
I've only used brined so far but can't wait to try and salt some, I'll be able to compare then :)
