    What's really good on Thinkpads that are using Intel's 2nd Gen and up is the ability to Speed Up your Mechanical Hard Drive using MSATA.. Or you can install your Operating System on MSATA SSD and leave the Hard Drive as Local Disk

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. At this point in time it's less worth it to get an mSATA SSD because of how much cheaper standard 2.5" SSDs are. I used to often sell systems with a 64 or 128 GB mSATA SSD and then a 500 GB hard drive, but now SSDs are cheap enough that I usually put in a 250 GB or 500 GB SSD. mSATA and 42mm M.2 drives (used in some newer ThinkPads) generally cost more per GB than a 2.5" SATA drives, since they aren't as common. For systems where I need a LOT of storage, such as my desktop (Ivy Bridge let's goo!), I still use the mSATA SSD/SATA HDD combo.

    Thank you for the video :)! I have a T470 with a similar but different screen problem. It normally starts fine, but after some time (it can be between 0,5 - a few hours) of use, it starts to flick a bit then getting darker until it becomes unresponsive. Funny thing is, if I move the screen before it stops working, I can use the mouse or keyboard, sometimes the screen goes back to normal, but sometimes it keeps flicking, so I have to restart the computer any way. Have you ever experienced this issue of a Lenovo laptop and do you think it could be the connection from the motherboard to the screen, which makes the problem? Thank you for your time!

    • @SebisRandomTech

      It will wear out in time as will anything else, the X201 I worked on in a previous video was so worn out that the texture on the tip was completely gone! But I can tell you that it takes a very long time and many years of hard use for the trackpoint to wear out, and usually by that point it's time to get a new keyboard anyway.

      The xx50 series ThinkPads have a display whitelist that prevents aftermarket screens from working. You can either reflash the EDID on the screen itself to trick the laptop into thinking it’s a genuine display, or hunt down a genuine T450S 1080p screen.

      It would be best to get things checked out sooner rather than later, if your model is the same as this one then it shouldn't be too difficult to repair it yourself. You just need a small Phillips screwdriver and a replacement cable (if the cable is the problem). If you absolutely can't get it repaired then you may be able to continue using it, cautiously, until you can get it repaired.

    Hi,
    I recently experienced this problem happening to my Lenovo Ideapad 3 that I recently purchased a while ago.
    If I run specific apps, my computer crashes and keeps on flickering(Making noises). It also increases my pc's temperature. Sometimes it just goes into BSOD and forces me to restart.
    I have tried everything I could and nothing seems to help.
    When I boot up the laptop It looks perfectly fine, but after a while it continuously freezes and flashes. The only fix was to restart and hope for the best.
    If you need extra details, I can reply and provide you with them.
    Thanks

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot of different things there that could be the problem. When it comes to temperature, make sure your fans/vents are clean and the thermal paste is still effective. If certain programs are causing you issues, try reinstalling those programs or updating your drivers. Try making a live Linux USB drive, boot into it, and see if you still have issues there. From there we might be able to narrow things down.

      @SebisRandomTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try first to make sure that the display cable's connection on both ends is secure and isn't frayed or worn. You can also see if upgrading graphics drivers helps, and the final possibility is the display itself going bad.

    Does the computer flicker when its closed and plugged into a display over VGA ? I am having a weird problem my backlight is out , if I shine a flashlight I can see the machine booted and went to the login splash. When I connect to a VGA monitor it shows the screen as black no signal. Then my other machine displays verical lines in all colors with artifacts within the lines, alien looking letters. This one is a Dell machine but I figured you may have had this problem with all the laptops you change hands with its plausible. I cant find this problem ANYWHERE , its a Dell Latitude D600 but I collect laptops from all eras as long as they're in new condition. This computer looks like it just came out of a store, I thought it may have been an incompatibility with the RAM the person who owned tried upgrading before giving it away because it 'wasnt't working' . I just bought a Lenovo but its an ideapad 330s w/optane , I wish I would have been able to get the Thinkpad espeically the x1 carbon, but it was out of my budget.

    I have a question (really hope someone can advise)...
    Quick background: My T460 screen is flickering/freezing, and to 'unfreeze' it I just have to move the screen a tiny bit. So it could be a loose connection which is what I want to check.
    My question: I started removing the plastic frame/bezel around the screen, but I'm concerned about the glue that's there - will I need to glue or tape anything when I re-assemble it? Or is the glue not necessary - can I just clip the plastic back in once I'm done?
    (Pardon the noob question here. I don't want a situation where the screen gets displaced or something because there's no glue.)

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      On the T460 you have to carefully remove the adhesive with the front bezel, if not replacement adhesives are offered online. It will not affect the screen in any way really, it's mostly cosmetic.

    Just to let you know after virus was downloaded I was able to see like half screen clearly than it started loosing little by little and now all I see vertical lines , I can’t even boot the laptop into windows 10 ( installer OS ) . Any advise is nightly appreciated .

      Try booting into Linux using a live USB stick and see if the problem persists.

      That is the magnesium-alloy "rollcage" that helps to protect the internal components from drop damage.

    Nice video sir.. i am looking for information about ssd in this laptop.. can i instal m.2 ssd in wwan slot as my primary boot option drive along with hdd for my file storage? i am from indonesia and sorry if i use wrong english..^_^

      Your English is fairly decent, better than some native speakers I know!
      But yes, you can use an m.2 SSD as the boot drive. Just make sure it is a SATA drive and NOT an NVME drive, or it won’t work. Also make sure it is a 42MM drive and not a 60 or 80MM drive or it won’t fit.

      have you ever used thinkpad x 240 model? i found information in this video last night: th-cam.com/video/g0U4aVKkD4I/w-d-xo.html
      it was said thinkpad x240 model also has 16 gb ssd using as cache..
      in this case should i keep installed my ssd as primary drive in wwan slot or replace that 16 gb cache ssd with the new one sir??
      thanks sir.. i am going to use this laptop to do my school assignment such as graphic and simple video editing.. 😃

      16 GB is almost useless even as a cache drive. Get a decent 128-256 GB SSD and save the 2.5” bay for a hard drive.

    Can you try using a CPU that has Intel iris Pro graphics for the t440p

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is theoretically possible if you are a master at soldering. The only Haswell CPUs that had Iris Pro graphics are BGA (soldered on) chips. I saw something about that in the ThinkPad forums a while ago.

    I own t460s.it does the same thing after 3 years of usage.also the pads on the back cracked and fell off one by one. It’s a good machine but the placement of that cable does not instill confidence to the brand.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion the T460s signaled the beginning of the end for well-designed ThinkPads, with the removal of the hot-swappable battery.

    • @ziwkovic6141
      @ziwkovic6141 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sebi's Random Tech yeah the batteries .there are two inside, from different manufacturers and one of them gets always first discharged and than recharged so it goes through a lot more cycles and wear . On the other hand the other one also degrades by being used far less because it sits there at highest voltage at 100 percent much longer. In simple words 2 battery system is not optimized for charging.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ziwkovic6141 Well the charging system had originally been designed for one of the batteries being external, as had been the case on the T440s/T450s. So in that sense it made sense to have one (the external battery) discharge first. I truly think Lenovo had either originally planned for the T460s to continue having an external battery, or (most likely) did not want to redesign the motherboard or chassis to accommodate one larger internal battery, hence why the T460s uses 2 internal batteries.

      @YaotlIshbu ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SebisRandomTech Do you know if ThinkPads (or specifically the T460 or T460p) have the feature of keeping the battery only charged up to 50% or 80% to help preserve battery health when always plugged into the power outlet? Sony VAIOs had that power management feature and I recently saw a 2019 Dell Insperon with that feature.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YaotlIshbu You can configure those things in Lenovo's Vantage software that is installed on ThinkPads in Windows. Not sure if there are ways to control that in the BIOS but I know you can adjust the charging thresholds on these machines.
