"The most extraordinary remake was with Bea Arthur. I remember at a party I met these chaps from Viacom, who said they were working on a new Fawlty Towers. My ears pricked up at the sound of cash registers and said, "That's wonderful, are you going to change anything?" They said, "Well we have changed one thing, we've written Basil out". And that's absolutely true, they took Basil and Sybil's lines and gave them all to Bea Arthur." - -- John Cleese, 2009
@@lunagoodhart5489 I feel like that's the issue here. I don't think it's a bad show (not great, but not bad), but compared to Fawlty Towers, it's a severe disappointment. If there were no association, I reckon it would've been fine.

Because Betty white and Harvey Korman were not allowed to be a little bit of the type of characters they play best the thing was a flop.
This is a remake of Fawly Towers. I was just watching a documentary about Fawlty Towers when they mentioned this show. So I had to look it up and see if it was any good.
I like this theme music of this show! I was also surprised of the negative comments myself. I rather watch this show than some of the shows they got now.
To be honest, for a failed remake of a British classic, this actually isn’t terrible. Bea Arthur doesn’t quite encompass the same chaotic anxiety that John Cleese had. Which is a shame, because that’s a lot of what made the original so great. But as a combination of Basil and Sybil, I think Bea Arthur definitely nailed something really great here.
@@WinstonTL Are you joking? This was based on Fawlty Towers. They obtained the rights. This is a good show on its own merits but a poor imitation of the British classic.
As a brit i find this episode very funny, dont know why everyone is so negative about it, bea arthur is really good in it, the weakest person is her sons wife
I believe the daughter-in-law is the dumb and fashion-obsessed one falling under the Blonde Bimbo trope. One of the few additionals that doesn't exist in the original Brit show.
All the best jokes come directly from Fawlty towers. I just watched that before this episode & a lot of dialogue is directly from there. I guess the Kermit the frog comment was good, but other thank that the new isn't good
Probably because Fawlty Towers was on PBS and most Americans were already familiar with the original and loved it. That’s why they didn’t like the copy version. Besides, many of the characters and situations don’t make sense in an American context.
I don't care about the criticisms in the comments I was not aware of this series till hearing Bea mention it 5 minutes ago during an interview she did I will watch absolutely anything with the glorious Bea so thank you, thank you, thank you for the upload!
I kind of wish they would have given this show more time and not canceled it so early, it could have really gotten better! But shortly after this she started the golden girls so I guess it worked out for the best ! 😁
I think this show got cancelled because people soon found out that this was a remake of the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. So, people preferred to watch the original on PBS which was much much better.
Thank you so much for sharing. I actually watched this show when it came out on network TV. I loved it, thought it was HYSTERICAL, but it was only on for one season, I think.....🤔
I had heard of this sitcom, but I hadn't seen it before now. I'm actually surprised it didnt fare better in the ratings and last longer. The writing is sharp, the comedy is high brow, the acting is exquisite. I love Bea, but this character does seem to be a transition between maude and dorothy. Maude's presence and wit, dorothy's sarcastic delivery and exasperation. All in all, a fantastic find!
One of 3 attempts to amerincanise a superior British Comedy, Fawlty Towers. Americans will never learn that they cannot replicate british comedy unless the lower the IQ of the 'writers' or 'copycats', stick to your own dire, unfunny shit.
I've absolutely loved Bea Arthur since I was a little kid watching Maude. I've never seen or heard of this show though. So appreciative of you to upload this for true fans to enjoy 🙂
I can't understand the criticism. Yes this show does not feature John Cleese and it wasn't written by John Cleese and Connie Both (not directly at least, they were directly adapted from the original scripts by John Cleese and Connie Booth) but it stars Bea Arthur, one of the most talented and funniest actresses of all time. the performances from all the cast were great and the humour transferred easily to the US.

Tony Rosato (as Aldo) really was "from Toronto". He was on "SCTV" for a couple of seasons. His final role was on an episode of the children's show, "Odd Squad"
The really funny thing is that Amanda’s ended its run with higher ratings than Cheers, Family Ties, and several other well know shows that were renewed for another season.
It was more so Bea Auther who got the show cancelled, she wanted a rest and went into retirement. Bea Arthur Still Looks Like Maude And Even Has Maude’s Hair Style In This Show

It was supposed to be a reworking of Fawlty Towers.
This is like an alternate reality where The Golden Palace featured Dorothy instead of Rose, Blanche and Sophia.
