This series was a mid-season replacement for the 1982-83 TV season, It had the misfortune of being on at the same time as Magnum PI and Fame, two of the most popular TV shows that season which meant that Amanda's suffered from low ratings because it failed to find an audience in that time slot. If ABC had given it more of a chance, the show may have done better. But in the end, The Golden Girls premiered two years later so it all worked out well for Bea Arthur.
I have just completed all 13 episodes of Amanda's by the Sea. This will be the 50th time in my life that I've seen each and every single episode of any TV Series, whether it's short-lived like Amanda's or long-running.
Oddly enough, Betty White also attempted a remake of "Fawlty Towers" around this time. Hers was called "Chateau Snavely" and costarred Harvey Korman, but it didn't make it past the pilot phase....
John Cleese and his then wife Connie who was co- writer of Fawlty Towers (and the pretty member of staff in Fawlty Towers)sold Fawlty Towers to the USA
John Cleese had his name removed from the credits for this attempt to re-do "Fawlty Towers", as they'd written out Basil and there were too many other changes.
Had this been on CBS it would have succeeded but it was on ABC which was more of the three's company Mork and Mindy crowd also the Ellen Burstyn show was good would have made it on CBS imo check it out
You’re right. This is easily a 4-5 season CBS show and I definitely see guest appearances by Carroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, and Angela Lansbury. Fate had a different plan called “The Golden Girls”.
I actually think this is better than fawlty towers, and I normally like most British comedy. It would have been great to see this series succeed, but then we wouldn't have gotten dorothy or a successful golden girls.
That's true, but Fawlty Towers never failed. John Cleese was begged to do another season but he wouldn't due to the immense pressure of having to make sure that the third season would be just as funny as the other two.
@@OldsXCool “Failed show” does not refer to the Fawlty Towers but the American remake. American remake haas thirteen episodes, original Fawlty Towers has twelve.
This show is amazing! So witty and hilarious! So glad I discovered it by accident.

I absolutely love this series.I wished it was on dvd.
Malisa
Agreed
It seems like a good show!
It would have been great to have had it last longer!
This series is fantastic, very funny.
Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@mariacardenas4665 Are you laughing about us or with us ?
I wish this series would have lasted! I love it!!!
Why didn’t it last? I thought it was funny as hell

Amanda’s & Amanda’s by the sea are the same exact show….
A masterpiece.
Anything with Bea is!
:)
I loved Maude when I was young one of my favorite shows ❤️😀

has the pilot ever been leaked onto youtube?
That was five years earlier, in 1978.
Yes it is on TH-cam
Then there was the Golden Palace
I really wish they continued with this show.
Great show. Another good funny episode.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going upstairs to get a much-needed nap, while Tarzan and Jane are out of their room." LMFAO
I think this may be the best episode of the series.
The misunderstanding of sexually suggestive events are so reminiscent of THREE'S COMPANY.
I never heard of this show. I can tell it was based off a brittish show
2:21 this scene has me laughing every time😂😂😂
It's like a conversation Dorothy would have with Blanche. 😂😅
LOL Why didn't this show take off? It's so funny, even though it is a knock-off of Fawlty Towers? Bea Arthur was a comedic genius!
It's a remake, not a knock-off.
Bea Arthur was fantastic....the rest of the cast falls flat I think.
This is one of three attempts to create a U.S. version of “Fawlty Towers”. The first had Betty White and Harvey Korman and was called “Snavely”.

Wacky theme song!
Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Was this Before OR After Maude ?????????????
Way after. Maude spun off her first appearance as the character on All in the Family was so good… and then there’s Maude!!! ;) Bea was AMAZING!!!
@@sjones3536 um this was before Maude…..

Bea Arthur is my favorite
Does the house in the opening theme still exist?
Yes, I own and live in it
The kitchen looks a lot like the kitchen in Fawlty Towers. I'm surprised they didn't use more of the original scripts when they Americanised it.
A lot of the ground floor is similiar. Except there is no bar / lounge
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
GREAT theme by Peter Matz!
Barry
It is a great theme!
The same guy who composed the theme from “Mama’s Family”.
This “failed” show has 13 episodes while the original only had 12 episodes to begin with.
Thanks I never knew Fawlty Towers only ran for 12 episodes. It always came on pbs on Saturday nights. I assumed its was on for years. Lol

That happened in fawlty towers too
Ok, Ok, Ok...So Aldo is no Manuel, but he does grow on one.
