Ascot probably had some of the toughest local competition for non-wing sprint cars in the country.

I used to go with my neighbor friend and his parents. I can remember the smell and the mud you would get sprayed with when near turn 1. Good stuff

Some of my earliest memories are of watching Rip Williams racing at Ascot

@@THXx1138 Jimmie and his blue helmet. My old man built the engines for Lee and Norma Leonards #48 sprinter that Jimmie drove for a little while. Best times!

I was there that night. I remember this because Deano was still not happy the newer 1984 Bromme Chassis (which had a different frame geometry from the cars that Bruce Bromme built between 1980-83) ....so, he says to Bruce..."Gimme back that old car."
Sure enough....with Bubby left in the work area on the restart, changing a right rear tire....Deano wins going away.

Afterthought to Williams Grove Speedway .....it's the local competition that gave its name… "The Ascot of the East".

Williams Grove Speedway, in Mechanicsburg, PA is known also for their tough local competition with their own 410ci winged sprint car club. These racers ( known as "The Pennsylvania Posse") always give the World of Outlaws regulars a bad time every time they come into town.

As a footnote… The 1984 chassis… A one off piece, has been restored, and is now in the ever so capable hands Jon Stanbrough. He appeared with the car at Perris for the Oval Nationals.

@@thevmanvj I worked for Sr for a short time, went with Brian Campbell and the Andy Gump car instead. Should have stayed with Sr. and not gone with Brian.
