    Brings tears of joy and sadness. Wonderful memories from a time altogether different than today.

    My childhood stomping ground and I was definitely at this race. My dad would take all the neighborhood kids to the track every weekend. Incredible memories

    We used to go to Ascot to watch speedway motorcycle racing .... great venue. Sad to see it go.

    Wow, just wow,! I grew up going to Ascot, and hearing some of the names that the announcer said like, Sweeney, Shuman, and Rip Williams makes me feel like a kid again!!

    After finishing 2nd in CRA points behind "Deano" and that "Little Red Sucker" 3 years in a row with a Stanton Chassis, Bubby said....."Let me build us a car!"
    After winning the CRA Points Championship in 1983-84, as well as winning both the Pacific Coast Nationals and the Don Peabody Classic ( $6000 to win) in 1984, the decision to runs Bubby's Chassis' (BJ-1 & BJ-2) was well justified. Bubby's creation was similar to the Stanton (in geometry), but was much stiffer...making it more suitable for tacky racetracks like Ascot and Santa Maria.
    Thanks for posting Dan, and for letting "Ol' Bub" build his own car.

    I remember opening the window in my room when I was a kid. And knowing there was a race that Saturday night and hearing a roar in the air....I even named my cat Ascot......that's where we found her

    Than You for posting this Dan! I only wish I hadn't missed so many of those Ascot nights! Asking myself what stupid stuff I was doing that I wasn't there more often. I wasn't a regular till Perris opened, but lived 5 miles from Ascot.

    It was never mentioned, but "Ol' Bub" had his hands full of "race car" . The right rear tire blistered with 10 laps to go....that's why Kinser caught him so fast.
    A great win against an absolutely loaded field.
    Hey Dan, aren't you glad you let Bubby build his own car?

    Interesting battle for 3rd, between Mike Sweeney and "Deano". What a lot of people don't realize is that early in the race, Thompson's car wasn't very good....it was tight, especially through the middle of the turns at both ends of the track. Dean said afterward ..... "I might've been able to get closer to Bubby and Steve if the front end was sticking a little bit better".

    Why are the outlawsdrivin" without wings?

    • @thevmanvj
      @thevmanvj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In those days, it wasn't unusual to see outlaw drivers take off the wings, and target the "big money" races. $10,000 to win was a big purse in those days. Sammy Swindell took off the wings in 1981 to win the Pacific Coast Open at Ascot.

    • @thevmanvj
      @thevmanvj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Afterthought : Sammy Swindell is the only driver in the history of the track to win sprint car Main Events at Ascot with and without wings.

      Early on the World of Outlaws ran some non-wing shows. I remember seeing them run at the Devils Bowl without wings back in 80 or 81.

      Three words.....
      1. Money
      2. Money
      3. MONEY!
      That race paid $10,000 to win.
      A lot of teams and drivers would be running the “big-money” races.
      Guys like Ferkel, Opperman, Swindell, Kinser, and “Wolfie”.
      Those were true outlaws.

    Bubby Who?!

    • @fivecitydirttracker4776
      @fivecitydirttracker4776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bubby Jones. A mid-west driver originally, who came west and made a name for himself racing with the CRA at Ascot. His Son Tony raced also and, was a popular driver as with fans too.
