    This is a nice addition to the rest of Chuck's videos on supports and the various ways to use them effectively. The cylindrical plugin supports can also be set as cutting meshes so you can hide parts of the model you may not want to print. I use that feature a lot when I'm testing large practical prints and only want to print a specific part of the model. Thanks again for all the useful tips and information.

    Very useful. I was surprised those long bridges worked with only a little support in the middle. I rarely need custom supports but on the few occasions where it was necessary I just designed my own in FreeCAD. However I understand that this method works for everyone without the need for CAD editing (e.g. people printing from ready-made STLs etc.)

    Great Video again. In this video in a few seconds literally I found what I was looking for. which was how to move and reposition custom supports. I am playing around with the different types. One thing you cover which is great and important to know is don't tick the check box in setting for the main support and you let people know that the settings will still be applied to the custom supports. This is information that other video don't cover but is VERY HELPful. I tried using a standard support fill in CURA 5.0 and there was absolutely no way to remove the supports. When I tried standard supports in Cura 4.x CURA places supports that are like a thin wall. These were very easy to remove. Actually I am trying to reproduce that type of support. I hope CURA 5.0 Redues how the standard supports work.

    With tree you need to use 'build plat only' under support placement. Then it wont go on the model, it will only place supports directly on the build plate. The tree would have been 10 min faster.

    • @FilamentFriday
      @FilamentFriday  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, my mistake. But the point was to show other support options when you may need it.

    • @ThePhilbox
      @ThePhilbox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@FilamentFriday I think this is a good excuse to just do an updated video on supports. Seems to me tree is the right way to go in most cases in terms of time, material cost, and energy. Even here with the correct setting for build plate it likely would have been more than even the 10 min faster shown. I think steering people away from tree here costs them time, material, and energy so worth a correction. Not trying to be a dink, I'm here because I like your channel, but this case is worth helping your audience with a correction. Also, tree supports seem to release the best too, with that spaghetti top they have...hope you will take this in the helpful spirit it was intended.

    Hey Chuck! I thought you might be interested a easy trick I learned this week for getting better bridging on almost any print by just changing one slicer setting. In cura, set "Top/Bottom Line Directions" to "[60,105,150,15]".
    This will rotate the top/bottom layers by 15 degrees, which can significantly shorten long bridges, and make supports less necessary or even sometimes allow them to be omitted if both sides are already supported. (This works because most models are designed with either 90 or 45 degree angles)

    • @FilamentFriday

    The "Bridge" option is a really helpful function. But if your 3d object is a bit taller, the bridge is getting really huge. There should be an option available to edit the width of the legs to keep the bridge support as small as possibel. If you make the legs of the bridge-support smaller, the supported area is getting smaller as well.

    Great video mate, one question i have, lets say you have a print that needs support 400mm above the print bed, could you get a custom support working off the side of the print but closer to the top like the bridge? similar to your bridge test but assuming you wanted to only have it running at 45 degs from your vertical posts

    Do you have a video or resource on how to set a print at a 45 degree angle and use tree supports?

    Hey, how to make so you get this infill like design at the top of the support? Im having trouble where the side with supports looks really bad and isnt melted together at all

    Do they wrap around the sides?

    Thanks for this Chuck, have they fixed the issue with machine profiles in the settings a your previous post?

    I think you oriented wrong the cross support. I would get each arm of the cross under the square (or corner of the model) so when the hotend moves in other direction, that stress point have support. It takes more plastic, but I think it makes a better job. You could see as the hotend bridging from one point to another on a straight path (with the cross oriented as an x) or the hottend bridging and making an square turn in the middle of the path (with the cross oriented like +). Loved the video, thanks.

    how do you get the purple mesh between the supports?

    It would be cool if people could use different supports within the same models.
    Sometimes I notice that tree supports are best for the outer surface, but internal geometry just works much better with zigzag or lines.
    If I could somwhow use both support types on the same model, it would be amazing
    And is there a video by you on how to optimally dial in supports?
    I often print models where the removal of the internal supports is very hard and I don’t know to to make this easier on myself

      My profiles have my settings. I think I covered them but can’t remember which video. You can mix supports. Just check the box and see the mess it creates ;)

    I wish I could get the "it just works" of superslicer with the modularity of cura.

    I've got to try this, thanks. But, I've been using tree supports for most of my stuff, but since I upgraded to Cura 4.12.1, they aren't coming out right. I get gaps in the support bodies, and sometimes, one or more of the supports are completely missing. Once, it didn't start printing the support until it was about an inch off the bed.
    Any ideas (anyone) what might be causing this, or how to fix it?
