Dating here in Malaysia are hard because it is VERY different than in Europe. First of all, dating is considered a foreign culture so some people are uncomfortable of being alone with others. Secondly, dating in Malaysia often happens to get to know another person while in Europe, it could be done for sexual interaction which usually does not happen here. Thirdly, Malaysians attend to seek long-term relationship with someone and therefore, they could not ask a girl out on a date as often they could be asked in Europe. And lastly, religious factors plays a bigger role here in Malaysia compare to Europe. Malaysia has four major religions - Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity - and of all these four, only Christians could go on dates easily while the other three religious followers could be more conservative and conserved.

As a Malay man, I sympathize with her. I truly believe her when she says her dating pool is small because I noticed too many conflicting values for a relationship to blossom here for her.
First of all, she can take the Malays out of her options right off the bat.
Think about it. When considering the dating habits of the Malays, it is important to note that conservatism is the norm. Most Malays date with the intention of marriage. It is very normal for us not to engage in premarital sex before marriage. I can see it can put off a lot of westerners.
Yes, in my university years, I had friends who slept with their girlfriends or bohsia or prostitutes, but they were mostly just kids experimenting with sex. And they were considered the "naughty couple". And some of my friends are what most would consider the liberal Malays. They experimented with alcohol, drugs and sex in their 20s to varying degrees of course.
Even among liberal Malays, such behavior is not typical, and most eventually pursue marriage as they enter their 30s. This pattern is reflected in my own friend group, as almost all of those men once engaged in sexual experimentation are now married to liberal Malay women.
Despite these liberal tendencies, intermarriage is still rare though. Partly because for a Malay, there is no such thing as cohabitation. We literally risk a raid by the Islamic Departments if we do that.
However, this does not stop some Malays from cohabiting with their non-Muslim girlfriends/boyfriends ; they just need to know which areas to settle down in. For the rest of us, it's too much of a hassle.
Plus, this kind of thing puts a lot of strain on these mixed-race relationships. So, in the end, they either get married with the conversion of the non-Muslim partner into Islam, or they just break up.
So, in this context alone, her dating pool is reduced to Non-Muslim Malaysians and other expats. But let's say I'm a non-Muslim; that vegetarianism thing will probably be another hurdle.
Personally, there's no way I'm going to forgo nasi ayam, no matter how infatuated I am with a woman. Maybe I can pretend to be a vegetarian for a period of time or even convince myself that I can be one in order to win over her affections. Ultimately, I doubt it would be sustainable given the significant role meat based food plays in our multi racial Malaysian society. I'm too far gone man!
No more KFC? No more viral food hunting ? Forget about it.
Muslim or not, Malaysians really love food, and that's not an understatement. It's a warning. We are the fattest country in Asia because of this national obsession.
Lastly, her monthly expenses, which are estimated to be around 5k to 6k including rent, suggest that she is among the Top 20% (T20) in terms of purchasing power in Malaysia. (I'm making a lot of assumptions here, she could possibly be a M40 spending almost at full capacity. But I highly doubt that.)
In contrast, the majority of Malaysians fall within the B40 and M40 categories, me included. It is fair to say that her lifestyle expectations may not be feasible for the 80% of locals.
I mean pretending to be vegetarian is one thing. Pretending to be rich in order to keep up with your love interest? LMAO. Good luck with that. It's literally one of the most popular tropes in almost every evening Malay soap drama on TV ever!
So, based on my groundless theories above, her ideal partner avatar is a vegetarian non-Malay (expat or local) who is in the T20 bracket. That's kind of niche, in my opinion. But life is full of surprises, so who knows right? Anything can happen.
    Welcome to Malaysia BTW.

True. Being a Sri Lankan living in Malaysia, this is completely true. Usually in the eastern culture, relationships are considered more serious and the final expectation of both parties involved is to get married. And also marriage is kind of an essential thing in the eastern culture.
A married couple will also be living the married life while playing the traditional husband and wife roles. Everyone is expected to have kids. There aren’t many people who say I don’t want kids. Even though they don’t want to, they have to.
Raising kids, give them a better education, working hard on taking care of the expenses while taking care of children, having some quality time with your partner in the meantime are not easy things. These things are extremely difficult with a modern woman (mostly a western woman). Life’s hard and if you keep fighting for the rights of you gender role, you’ll be left with no time to live your family life. You definitely have to make commitments.
As someone who had few relationships with some western women, most of the modern women don’t fall into the category of marriage material. I’m not talking about all the women because there are many caring and loving ones among the westerners too. And also I’m not talking about a man being a wife beater. Having a family, being parents are not easy and at some point the life, most of the eastern men and women expect to have a family. And many expect to have someone who would agree to take care of their parents when they’re old too. So a modern woman can’t live their independent life in a such situation. And marrying such person would be a risk. Since people expect to have a family at some point in the relationship, someone who is not into such of a long term commitment may not worth it.

You could boil water from the tap and drink it. If you think you can't but if you eat out most of the time let me tell you are actually drinking boiled water from the tap when you ordered drinks (except canned, or bottle drinks). It's safe. Malaysians don't usually drink straight from the tap -- they always boil the water before drinking it. Some households may have installed water filters for drinking without boiling.

"people chew with their mouth open"
definitely not by most malaysians, the malays dont do that, we have this thing called 'adat' , english doesnt have a word for it but its similar to 'customs'. or simply it means unwritten, traditional code governing all aspects of personal conduct from birth to death.
example: like you see alot of malay kids/youngsters, when they greet the parents, adults, elders they will take your hand and bow and put your hand on/close to their face or forehead as a sign of respect.
so eating with your mouth close is one of them.. its considered rude to eat with your mouth open on a table with others

As a westerner who moved to Kuala Lumpur this year I totally understand what she means about the dating culture. If you're not interested in the locals there are very limited options for you and if you're not part of a major demographic group you're going to be lonely as most people stick to their own kind. Even if you are interested in dating a local its going to take you a long time to progress in your relationship as people's concept of a relationship is a lot different than the people in the west even if they're in their 20's. If you value having romantic relationships before marriage you're going to have a really tough time here.

Prior to this, heat waves would last 4 to 6 months with minimal or totally no rain, making life extremely uncomfortable without air conditioning or a well designed and insulated home with appropriate airflows. Along with the half-year long heat was the terrible haze that would envelope the region (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia) for weeks and months - we've not had haze these past 5 years (touch wood..)!

Most of us don't adopt the western "dating" culture. We go out with "friends" to see if you can be a "real friend" or not then only you talk about being boy/girl friend. It's old school common sense, if they can't be a "real friend" you don't want to be with them.
Most stereo type Chinese are the open mouth eaters, also some people (even asians) actually can't get used to Durian that's for sure so no point promoting it. So far our country has been a low cost country with first world living for westerners, hope we can maintain to be like this.

Dating is difficult everywhere if one is looking for perfection. I'm a Malaysian living in London for almost 10 years; everybody said it's difficult here too. Meanwhile, the population density in London is probably 3-4x higher per square km than in KL, and the city is diverse, yet many young adults still complain about the difficulty of finding someone! It's almost statistically absurd. I've seen my share of boys and girls who struggled in this because they look for something that does not exist - perfection.
Also, it's not a mystery that many modern women look for ~6-foot men, tall dark handsome, high-value men with 7-8 figures salary. Just look at some interviews; I guarantee you'd be appalled by the women's requirements. But they don't know these men are just 1% of the male population and have much to choose from.

Are you? If not i can assure they are not malaysian. The least malaysian do is just look at you or stare from afar hehe
    2. dating is hard? maybe it's due to how your expectations... the higher your expectations, the less chance you got to date anyone. i've met a lot of foreigner who expect 'dating' in malaysia similar with the way their dating culture back home... when they can have casual sex, display their affectionate publicly... malaysia is modest, we don't do that... behave in public; all is good no one cares

There is a hidden vegetarian gem at the back of that famous Chinese Temple in Jalan Ampang, on the same side as KLCC. This place serves breakfast & lunch only, at affordable prices. Can always do take-away if do not want to eat there. Google for Chinese vegetarian restaurants in KL which serve one of the very best in the world ! “Discrimination “ in dating based on ethnicity is still unfortunately relatively prevalent in the year 2023 and not very much talked about .( Things are getting better )
Usually as most people know , White Male Anglo Expats have an “ easier “ time dating local “asian women” compared to White Anglo Female Expats due to local asian women practicing discrimination in their selection.
As a result , White Anglo Female Expats struggle in finding a local “ asian male “ should they desire to do so.
However, my humble suggestion to her is for her to find an unconventional and unorthodox local asian men that doesn’t fit the “standard stereotype” of Asian men.
There should be a quite a number of them around since Malaysia is fairly “ globalised “ .

Agree .. when you meet a nice local guy whom you like, just ask "would you like to marry me" . He will ask his mum for approval 😊. Once mum okay...your single day will soon over.

    Learn to differentiate between
Malaysian and foreign workers. all those years living here and still can't tell.? LOL get off KL sis. you will see the true side of Malaysia outside of Klang Valley. east coast, northern peninsula, borneo. those are authentic parts. I swear, no one bothers to take pictures with random tourist unless you're already famous.

Synne should go to places where people don't spend 6000 RM a month if she wants to date

After watching this video.. now i understand why she said dating in Malaysia is difficult.. it harder to find premium quality boyfriend here in Malaysia. Because most of them already married or most of them just going for a random paradise destination fling..
