- So, I've been getting questions on Instagram asking about hand speed and decided to record myself doing my favorite warmup. If you have any questions, or other video suggestions, let me know in the comments!

no cuts. just raw footage. mistakes and all, long and the stuff like stretches you do in between - more than just executing the concept itself briefly. transparency goes a long way and helps others learning any artform. much appreciated man 🙏🏾
Thank you so much for sharing these exercises. You're an awesome drummer and a great inspiration. Much love!
Can u please keep these gems coming? Ur truly blessing us😤🦸🏾♂️🙌🏾
Really appreciate stuff like this !!
You are a strong brother 😬
I love this, especially the honesty at around 16:30 regarding memorizing the exercise, making mistakes and whether or not to stop and restart versus continue on. It's so tempting as an educator to present only the cleanest/ideal takes in videos, and I really deeply appreciate the honesty. (Plus, I think there's something to be said about incorporating less familiar exercises into a warm up routine.)
You are changing my understanding about a lot of things, thanks for sharing 🥳🥳
The Alan Dawson ritual is really good with a foot ostinato also
More content exactly like this please 😥❤❤
It's too helpful🤦♂️
Thank you for this !

THIS IS REALLY AWESOME ❓️👍👀
Hey bro 😊 We had a same lab in Berklee!! I'm Jin!! Subscribe done ✅
Great video Jharis, can't wait to try this warmup out! For a video suggestion, can you break down the drum part on your single "Miss You"?
Definitely!
@@jharis.yokley oh sweet bro!
🤯🤯
great video! Curious what drew you to a more "french grip" style when you play the snare drum? Was it a teacher, experimentation, or both?
Hmm not really sure. I usually change grips just based on how I feel in the moment. Also, maybe the heavier marching sticks have influence too
Thank you for sharing this Jharis! I was wondering if you would like to share your tips on holding and hitting the sticks correctly. It looks like you are using your fingers but you are actually using your wrists. When do you switch between the grips? Do you ever hold sticks at the bottom of the sticks to get more powerful strokes on toms? Thank you so very much.
🙏🏿 I think how you hold the sticks are a personal preference with no wrong answers if it works for you. I switch through all the grips + fingers/wrists pretty randomly lol
THANK YOU YOUNG MAN YOU HAVE RE-IGNITED MY DISCIPLNE . ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FOR HANDS IS ROLLS ROLLS ROLLS BY JOEL ROTHMAN
This is really good stuff Jharis. Do you warmup with Ralph Hardimon sticks? I’ve been using the Bill Bachman sticks, and they’re super rad.
🙏🏿 yup I warmup with hardimons
It's such a game changer to use bigger sticks during the warmup! Jharis, Are those Ralph Hardimons?
Yup hardimons 🙏🏿
Are you using matching sticks there?
I've been feeling really limited by my non-dominant hand lately. Something like constant inverted flam taps drags so much with the approach notes before the accent on my left. Warmups get me looser but I'm hitting a tempo (and endurance) ceiling before I get sloppy
Yes I’m using matching sticks. Hmm yeah I think the “weak” hand is the bane of every drummer’s existence lol. Plus, inverted flam taps are already hard enough. For me, it helps to use heavier sticks and put the metronome at a very slow tempo so you can better understand all the nuances and slowly increase the tempo
So my forearms ache after awhile of doing this ….that’s good right?? 🥵
Hahaha yeah! Make sure to stretch a little before and during 🤘🏿
Why is your snare rotating through the video?
That snare stand is broken so it’s always moving. Very annoying lol
Which Sticks are you using?
For pad warmups, I use vic firth Ralph hardimon marching sticks.
Excellent brother excellent! I for ine am very appreciative of brothers like You❤
love that your getting more into teaching! maybe for the next one a pop filter on the mic would be nice:)
I'm sorry if you said it somewhere in the video, but were you using marching sticks for this? The sticks you were using seemed extra big
Yup. I practice with marching sticks when I’m on a practice pad. I feel like the added weight and width helps strengthen my fulcrum and finger control when I switch back to normal sticks
If you can do them on the snare do them on the snare, the pad is ok for developing muscle memory but it doesn`t respond like a snare head.
Well of course!
Fuck yeah, thanks Jharis!
Cool! I’m about watch. Honestly though, those Berklee sheds the past 2 years has been “sport drumming” luckily I don’t recognize you but I assume you were in the mix. It was just 20 guys playing their ass off, blazing lightning quick linear drum fills, with very little originality just hyper fast psychotic speed 😂. I pictured the head of the drum department secretly throwing a fit! Still, I like the lesson and have done some of the same. Was just doing something very close to this tonight! I had superfast singles in the 90s and early 2000s but then just got so into doubles that my single started to slack a little bit so I’m pulling them back together now.
Who
Bro is yapping
@@LucidTWLoadTaker No, even Dennis Chambers made it very clear to keep it musical and GROOVE. The new breed of players is chop crazy and just trying to out play each other and a lot of cats sound the same…. But I don’t wanna get into this anymore. This is a platform to teach a lesson from a very fine, musical drummer.
