I've had my ROG Ally since it cane out last year and pushed the performance thermals with the SD card and no issues so far. I would wait until the next Ally version to upgrade. Great video!
Thanks! 🦇 Yeah I know the X is really good, but I can't justify the upgrade either. By the time a new Ally releases, we'll likely have a lot more options from other companies at this rate. So I think it's smart what Valve is doing by offering SteamOS on competitor devices
Good video and i 100% agree with everything you said with regard to the ally x vs og ally ! Someone was trying to tell me its a massive upgrade . I know better . It has better 1% lows and 5 fps better in most games . The battery life and ergonomics weren't enuff justifing spending 800 $ in my opinion
Yeah for real. It's nice if you're someone who has the cash to drop on an upgrade like that, but it's not really the best option for your average consumer
Yeah that's an interesting idea. It's so variable too depending on many factors. Maybe sometime soon I'll make some time to test it out 👌 thanks for the suggestion 🦇
I just bought a gently used Ally today at a pawn shop for less than half the price of a new one (even came with the box), I'll use it for a handful of games I play that are heavily modded, because it's easier to do on Windows. I also have an LCD Steamdeck but I just play "out of the box" games on that. I'm aware of the SD card issue, I'm going to open the Ally up this weekend and put some automotive fiberglass heat reflective tape over the side closest to the heat sink and see if that helps. I might try a docking setup to see if it's a good replacement for my older windows gaming laptop.
Yeah there's a bunch of mods you can do to this to improve things. You got a great deal on it even if the SD card slot ever went. But people do upgrade the internal drive as well
As an Ally owner, this was an interesting video, but I think the screen shot you refer to at 1:00 isn't talking about dual booting OSes on the Ally hardware, but is in fact talking about dual boot OSes on the Steam Deck hardware. I've seen a couple of other sources refer to the same text when making this dual-boot-on-the-Ally claim, so you're not alone. But I haven't seen any online information that confirms the idea that when SteamOS comes to the Ally that it will be dual boot - but surely it will be? The popularity of SteamOS on the Ally would likely be better if dual boot is an option.
Yes they'll make it a dual-boot option. Even if it's not at initial release. It's meant to be offered for multiple platforms and Windows devices. And like I mentioned the ROG Ally running Windows is so optimized now that the majority of users would not want to install SteamOS if it never offered that feature. It would be much more appealing if they offered the dual-boot that people are interested in. But it's not finished yet, so anything can change. I would be surprised by Valve if dual-boot is the topic people are interested in and they drop the idea, especially since a lot of videos like mine and the gaming community are interested in it. I'm excited to see how it unfolds. Would you still want to install it if it does not offer dual-boot?
Rog ally is 40k in india which is like 450$ and ally X is of 90k which is 1050$ u can decide which is better. The option for battery is that we can easily get a 65w powerbank under 5k or 50$ like that we saved 500$
Yes for what the X is offering compared to the price difference, I fully support buying the original with a power bank 👌 I would not buy the X because I have the original already, even though the X is very nice lol
I like your info on the Ally. I myself am more interested in the Deck more so (as I put it “more power per dollar”, makes sense right?) but I feel that the Deck, the Ally, and the other handheld PCs Almost nailed it. Which is the “consolized pc”. But what I’m noticing now is too many hardware revisions with added “somethings”. If they’d come out, give it a window of let’s say, ever 3 years, treat it more like gaming consoles, then that FOMO B.S. can stop making people waste money….. unless you like wasting money every year, then go ahead, but man, it’s too much
Yeah you nailed it right on the head. It's an expensive hobby to do upgrades like that. I'm sure a lot of people are watching the market and waiting for the right time to get one... just like you and your retro handheld decision.. lol any updates on that front??
I have… my wife’s not against the idea! Lol. I’m that far. But yeah, responsible dad things. Usually takes the lead on MY decisions, sorry video gAmes. I know what’ll happen, if I get one, then I’ll likely feel guilty Ernesto barely grazed us (another one we dodged) how did you fare this storm?
It looks like they did. I went off the conversations I've had with ASUS directly, but it's great for people to know where to check 👌 I'm happy they're taking care of their customers. 2 strikes would have been better than 3 though.. so I guess by that it seems they know a lot will break from the initial buyers
Not fully true. Here in South Africa, this is not the case. It is still a 1-year standard warranty. Additionally, the repair centres are not assisting with the SDCard issue. My unit was sent in three times for the SDCard reader issue. The warranty was not increased either.
that's very unfair 😮 thank you for letting us know this. You should file a complaint with them for being treated differently for the same issue, just a different location. We all have the same SD card issue 🤔
@@batpixel i got the ally first a few months ago at bestbuy open box... it was pretty dirty at around $550 at the time after tax. Z1E. I returned it and got the legion go 1tb at microcenter for around $80 more with case and clean condition. Basically new. Ally is better for sound quality and portability for sure. My left controller wobbles on the legion. I have a tpu cover on so it minimizes the wobble. It's fine. Had to turn off some stuff (i think cpu boost?) following reddit tutorials because legion go would over heat and shut off when plugged into charger while playing while on windows. I also had to open up the back and clean the fans (there was a little bit of dust). After that it ran fine and never randomly shut down or throttles anymore. Had bazzite GNOME ver on it for some time before but was a hassle for me (i shouldve installed the regular kind) so I changed it back to just only windows. Never had heating issues with bazzite on legion go though but only issue is decky plugins wouldn't really load sometimes so I'd have to manually update it everytime I logged in. Games would stutter because it wasn't using the full potential of the chip. I suspect it was playing at the lowest wattage. The drivers wouldn't load or tdw settings I guess. Thats why i changed back to windows and deleted it. I will get the ally in a few hours in my mailbox. I got scammed on reddit marketplace hardwareswap the other day $240 for an odin 2 pro so I'm trying to get my money back with a paypal g&s claim. Couldnt believe you could be scammed from 4yo active acc. The dudes acc got suspended and never responded to me anymore or sent tracking. Bummed about it. 9/19 is the estimated day from paypal they should send refund if the seller aka scammer doesnt respond. Wanted something smaller and less expensive to take with me when i go traveling. Thought odin 2 pro would be great and the deal was too good to be true. Decided to just go back to the ally! Z1E ALSO. I was surprised it's so dang cheap now! I remember I didn't really have to tinker with settings too much when I had the ally as well probably because of VRR. Hopefully with my new knowledge learned from having the legion, it would make a better experience now with the ally. Didn't like how the sd card issue was on the ally.... but ill probably upgrade the storage later.
this x upgrade is realy nessesary... but i play more older games and i dont need highest settings ...i think the normal ally is enough. but the bigger screen from legion go...turns me on ,soooo much...i dont know wich one...and the lil bit of daily inet time or other office things..makes this legion go...more favorite...
@shaiknoordeen.i9220 you can now add a CPU boost button in command center so it's a lot easier now. Nintendo has been on the hunt towards youtubers and companies for the Switch stuff.. so you basically just have to install it yourself. It's like a 'bring your own emulator' situation. So I can't make a guide on that
It's Windows 11 so you can use Bluetooth controllers the same as a PC. But if you're into playing shooters online, you'll be competing with people using mouse and keyboards. If you're into emulation, you'll have the ability to play games from most eras on 1 handheld. It really depends on what you're using it for. It's the same as a gaming PC that's portable. The X obviously has advantages, but it's a big price jump for that
Based on seeing several Bazzite installs on the Ally, I'm still waiting for someone to argue why I should give up the better game performance on Windows and better game compatibility for a better UI and a better resume feature. Bazzite nor SteamOS will provide better battery life.
Curiosity more than anything for me. I won't install it if they don't offer a dual-boot option. You're right that the Ally is best optimized on Windows, so replacing it isn't a good option
Bro I been using dual boot on a dock station using my gaming monitor for a month now and switch OS depending on what game I want to play. No problems whatsoever.

AMD fluid Motion frames or AMD FreeSync
Try FreeSync first but if you're needing a frames per second increase on a game try fluid motion frames
I ended up getting one for $350 thru marketplace and i have a legion go already :p

Badly want an emudeck setup video and how to make it work
I've needed to do this with mine since I got it back. Maybe I'll make a vid about it soon
@batpixel no prob i made it myself...but doing it for switch and 3ds sucks...can u explain those please
