What a great video... just did the 4tb upgrade w/ the heatsink, got the screen protector and got the enclosure. Super easy and now I don't care that my SD card reader broke again for the 3rd time... :(
It seems to me that the cause of the drop in speed in transfers or writing data to the SSD is caused by the high temperature. If you notice when you put in the adapter for the larger SSD, it is mounted almost on the processor.
Great video, dude. I like how you talked about other accessories to purchase, that was very helpful. I do think Asus accessories are overly expensive, though. I think the Rikiri controller isn't worth the price it goes for. Coll controller, though.
@@digitalmaus dang, i wanted to give back cause I absolutely love the video. You go into very deep extent which i appreciate as a new Ally owner. It definitely does help, and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
I did it, it lowers write speeds a little bit, but that’s just because of heat, if you get some thermal pads and put them ontop of your ssd it won’t matter much.
Did you have an issue with the back paddles no longer pressing down after this install? Only 1/2 of them are pressing down, not sure what happened as they were working before
I've heard some say that using a heatsink or thermal solution isn't strictly necessary, especially with smaller drives like 2TB SSDs. That said, I always like to add at least some thermal tape to my SSDs for peace of mind.
Hello bro, im new to this and i am pretty much lost even after seeing this video, so like i got a z1 extreme and i want to increase the storage capacity since 500 GB base is very low, but i am fine with just 2TB, my doubt in question is, putting an SSD will lower the console performance or heat problems? (Wich is what your video explains but i am dumb) if so is better to get a external storage for the rog to live longer? Thanks in advance
I understand. The ROG Ally is compatible with 2230 M.2 NVMe drives. You can just purchase this same size SSD with 2 TB of storage then follow Asus’ instructions for the install. I have used this same size SSD in 2 Asus Rog Allys and two Steamdecks, I never had a problem with them. i have used Sabrent’s, Western Digital, and Inland. You could use an external SSD to store games as well just depends what you are comfortable doing. Here is the link to Asus’ storage upgrade guide. rog.asus.com/articles/guides/how-to-upgrade-the-ssd-and-reinstall-windows-on-your-rog-ally/ Hope this helps
If I just unplug the original ssd from de Rog Ally and plug the new one, is windows going to reinstall himself ? Or do I have to install Windows from usb or something ?
You can use Asus Cloud Recovery. Asus put out a guide here: rog.asus.com/articles/guides/how-to-upgrade-the-ssd-and-reinstall-windows-on-your-rog-ally/
If you are going to play AAA titles, I recommend set everything at low except medium texture, 720p with RSR enabled, it's gonna be great looking with around 60 FPS at 15W TDP. I'm not recommend playing while charging cause it can corrupt your SD card (happened to me and I had to format it on other computer then it worked normally). Battery is around 1h30 mins if you're playing at 15W, 3 hour at 10W, I'm not recommend 25W as it can cause damage to SD card and drain battery to under 1 hour. Finally, this device has great software and screen/speaker quality, but has some issue about heat that you should take care on your own. If you can accept then buy it, there's not thing like having a PC on your palm. Or you can wait couple years to have new device line with better spec and longer battery life, less issues.
Hey man great video, I just got my son a z1 extreme and I wanted to upgrade the SSD, I’m new to this tech stuff so I want to make sure with you first since you are a pro on this, would a “crucial p3 PLUS 4tb” work also? I know it’s plus that’s what threw me off. If so I’m gonna save up a get it for my son. Thank you in advance Ps if you have any for sale let me know also please. Thank you
Hello, I'm not a pro but I appreciate you watching and your kind words. The Crucial - P3 Plus 4TB SSD should work just fine with the adapter. In terms of form factor you are looking for a M.2 2280.
only thing i heard on issues that common on reddit, is that vents on backplate start to crack after awhile from pressure. They say you have to cut certain spot on backplate to keep pressurre off.

Hi, have you faced any issues after the SSD update? i have read somewhere that right angle adapter may introduce some problems with stability
Gulikit King Kong Pro Max 3 has been my controller of choice for my Ally and I havent looked back since!

great video my guy
awesome man! just what i needet, thx a lot, great vid!
i would recommend if you have a dock using Ethernet over WiFi as i takes less time to install via asus cloud recovery
depends what kind of internet you have. If you have symmetrical 1G fiber, wifi still real fast.
the wireless earbuds have an audio delay of about 1-2 secs. no way around it. all updates installed still audio delay. just fyi
Turn on gaming mode and that gets fixed. Been doing it since day 1
the white jsaux case turns yellow really fast
Do I need a heat sink if I use the rog or saber enclosure?
The Rog comes with thermal pads
Wish the RGB backplate would come back. So far, it is listed as unavailable on Amazon.
Have you tried the official Jsaux store. I think it's on sale right now. jsaux.com/collections/for-rog-ally
@digitalmaus thank you, that is excellent news. Too bad you don't get an affiliate link through Jsaux official store.
No worries.not everything has to be about cash.Hope it helps.merry xmas

very nice .. but Does this introduce heat issues ? ^^

Much appreciated. 🙏 thank you
Is that side same one that van be used on ps5 ? The blk one
Fantastic video, which kickstand are you using?

Are the heat concerns with the SSD only with the 4TB or should a heatsink be used on the 2TB drives as well.

yeah the m2 drive in the rog ally z1 extreme uses a m.2 2280 so it's a lot smaller than the one in this video.
Hi there, did you have to mod the oem case/backplate to get everything to fit? Or did you not test with the oem backplate
