RE0 is the one RE i’ve played and beaten and never touched again. Not because it was bad but 1) it was too damn difficult 2) i hated not having an item box 3) I thought Rebecca was a weak character. It’s not a bad game and it looks beautiful and i also liked how they explain the reason why the T-Virus was leaked. It’s just a different game and kudos to Capcom for trying something else. I was always hoping for a RE2 and RE3 remake that looked like RE1R, then we'd have all of the Re games unified. Personally, I think this is the best RE has ever looked.
23:16 That's the major flaw of the series: inconsistent characterization. For example, Leon goes from naive and reckless cop in RE2 to unaffectable snarky ladyman agent in RE4 to stoic and pragmatic agent in Degeneration and then make a combination of these characterizations in other materials like Darkside Chronicle, RE6, REmakes etc. Claire went from children-loving mother-like young girl in RE2 and other materials to a more foul-mouth and flirty valley woman in RE2R. Jill went from serious, open-minded and professional in almost all RE game to the foul-mouth and angsty woman with trust issues in RE3R and Death Island. All of these issues stem from inconsistent writing style, more presense in English versions in the franchise.
The Leon one makes sense because there's a 6 year gap between him being a rookie cop & then a badass Gigachad secret service agent, then another gap to where he's the top DSO agent that's in in a position of leadership.
@@parastroika2393 That didn't explain how immedietely 1 year later since RE4 where Leon becomes more stoic in Degeneration with no snarky attitude he has in RE4.
My head cannon for the characterization difference with Rebecca in 0 and the REmake is that she was mentally and physically exhausted after what she went through the night before. She got sloppy and made mistakes and without Billy there for extra inventory space, she had to leave a lot of equipment behind so she could move fast enough to avoid the cerberus in the woods enroute to the Spencer mansion.
The inconsistency with Rebecca between Zero and remake, i always told myself that her reverting back to not being as strong willed, was the fact that after the events of Zero, with Billy now gone, she was alone, back in another Hell hole. Seeing more zombies and other BOW's, most of the teams just gone, maybe fatigue just caught up to her by then. Mind you, it's definitely not a good explanation, but i couldn't think of a better one
@@BahamutsTear Yes, I think PTSD is the most plausible explanation. Granted, I don't think the devs were thinking that far ahead; that's just an explanation that fans thought up retroactively. 😌
It's an awesome game. Sure, it's item mechanics can be punishing, or just frustrating for players that are new to the game, but the rest of the game is peak Resident Evil goodness. All it takes is having the patience to play through the game. To me, it's like the Resident Evil equivalent of SH4. It's a great game that did some experimental things. Those experimental features were functional, even though they weren't necessarily convenient for a players enjoyment, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the game.
I've always loved the traditional Resident Evil gameplay so haven't played anything after RE3. I really enjoyed Zero the first time I played it, it had some unique gameplay aspects which put you into a different mindset. I have replayed it but don't find it as replayable.
Of the "bad" mainline entries, or at least the ones I consider my least favourites (Zero, 5, 6, REmake3 and Village), Zero is my favourite and for good reason. The puzzles are a blast, controlling two characters at once (returning player Rebecca and new character Billy) feels like a dream, the atmosphere is top notch, the plot is as well written as the game it serves as a prequel to, and graphically, it's as good as REmake1 is. Really, the main reason this game has such a bad reputation is because of the inventory system. I don't mind sharing items between characters, but having weapons like shotguns take up two spaces of inventory and denying you a substitute for the item box (or even the item box itself) was a terrible idea and I'm not surprised that this was the only time they tried something like this. What I feel would've been a great game has been crippled to be just a good one by one of the worst item management systems of the series, and I'm not surprised people look this over in favour of its cousins, REmake1 and 4. P.S. ICYW what my second favourite of the bad main entries is? 5. Hands down. It's a sell-out, it's misguided, it's tedious on an initial playthrough and the plot stinks, but the gameplay is actually fun and it has some pretty creepy moments and a few good scares. Unlike Resident Evil 6.
do you have plans to play RE outbreak 1&2 as it is a side story set alongside RE 2 during the racoon city incident with its own unique story and add-ons to the overall world?
I've always loved Zero, didn't know people hated it until the past few years. Is it perfect? Hell no, but I like that it tried something different. Also liked some of the story and characters. Billy was badass, Rebecca was cool and anything with Wesker and Birkin is ok with me. Still remember playing this so many years ago on my Gamecube and now have it on my PS5 and Xbox Series X. Great video! Edit: just realized I've watched a few of your videos and liked them, so subscribed. Love RE and your videos on them have been very good
When I played REO the main hall of the training room ended up looking like a player home in Morrowind with the amount of items I littered the floor with which I'd never end up using
You can save more ammo if you take zombies on with the knife: in Zero, if you knife a zombie's legs twice you knock them down, making it quite possible to take a zombie on with the knife and not lose health doing that.
Zero was my first RE game. Anyway, many of the complaints about it were about the plot holes the game has from what I hear. Oddly enough there were plans to kill Rebecca off in zero because someone didn't like women who are feminine which obviously was scrapped due to her being in RE1. Also, you can use the C/Left stick to move the character you are not controlling.
I LOVE RE0 so thank you for this video. That said, if you want to play the HD version, get the mod Rebecca Gamecube-style, which fixes her eyes and lips. Not to be confused with the one that gives her old face, that one breaks in the cutscene if Rebecca is facing Stinger.
I don't really mind the inconsistencies with the story. The stories in these games are pretty goofy anyways. Another weird thing is that Zero makes it seem like the training facility, the factory from RE2 and the Spencer mansion are right next to each other. But that's just one of the weird videogame things that help create the dreamlike atmosphere. The best things are exploring the cool locations and the atmosphere. I think that graphically Zero was a minor downgrade from REmake on GameCube, but the HD remaster made Zero look as good as the REmake. I wasn't even aware that the games had quick reload. I have to check if that works on the original GC games or only on the remasters.
I played this game for the first time on stream a few years ago, I remember that one time I spent one hour just moving all my inventory from one room to another since I put everything in the same save room at the beginning. It was a mess, I also didn’t really like the locations beside the train, to me it felt an uninspired version of the mansion from REMake. But I’m still glad to have played it since it’s the last one to use that classic formula.
@@ColdheartDunther I did the same thing. Every time I'd move to a new location I'd be sure to haul all my stuff wirh me. Not to mention the magic elevator towards end that connects multiple locations that aren't even near one another. And how the Spencer Mansion is visible at the end. When you literally took a speeding train in the opposite direction for God knows how many miles.

May not be the best of the series, but i still really enjoyed this game a lot. It has some of the coolest enemy variety for me. I love giant bug creatures in my RE games! Also it has some of the best puzzles in the series! All the monsters felt dangerous and a threat, how a true survival horror should be. The game sure does get an unfair amount of criticism, as i really don't think it's as bad as most people make it out to be tbh.
Capcom should have kept crimsonheads😢 Also maybe(probably) Rebecca ran out of bullets when the Hunter cornered her. You are also defenseless without ammo
I feel like the frogs and lack of GameCube hardware sales had a lot to do with this. Game tbh should just be remarketed as a coop survival horror I know coop gets flak for good reason but this specifically could work considering they just can't be together all the time
Disclaimer: i didn't watch the whole video and never beat RE Zero, but there was always something i liked about it. It seems like the hardest resident evil to me though.
Zero with the item box mod makes the game infinitely better. The reason zero was not the most adored is mostly because of those mixed bag of in theory good ideas that were poorly implemented. I think it is quite telling that a game going against everything zero and remake set being the best RE game shows how outdated a lot of those concepts were too. In the end, zero is indeed underrated, but only if you can get past most of weird design choices.
A very good game with unique and amazing locations and atmospheres (probably some of the best in the whole serie). The story is weak, I agree, if compared to the original trilogy, but it's ok. Personally I didn't like the story of the attack made by the reborn doc Marcus and his leeches, while I really loved all the lore about the story of the old doctor Marcus and his lab. I also appreciated the story between Rebecca and Billy. A tipycall RE story. I agree, Rebecca's charachter doesn't fit very well with RE1, but only in the Chris storyline. if you consider canonical the storyline of Jill, where Rebecca doesn't appear, RE0 can be effectively a good prequel, or better, a good spin-off. About the gameplay, it's innovative and interesting but the lack of the item box sometimes needs too much backtracking. I think the problem could have been definitly solved with a few boxes in the key points. In conclusion, not the best RE, but probably one of the most interesting and underrated games of the serie.
The "how did Rebecca go from kicking ass in Zero to being weak and helpless in 1/REmake" thing is just an extra layer of "hey, uh, what?" over really the whole baseline of "Rebecca is 18 years old but already field medic for a super-elite weirdly (even for American police) militaristic police squad _and also_ their helicopter mechanic, all of which should require _way more time_ in training, education, prior work experience, etc. than is available by then, no matter how much of a "child prodigy" you are." It's a shame, because I _do_ like Rebecca's character and even... _most_ of what goes on in Zero - I'm not fond of the forced two-character shuffle puzzles or the 2000s _brown-ness_ of the color palette - but I suppose it's also emblematic of how the dev teams just generally can't seem to make up their mind on just how capable their characters should be given their supposed backgrounds, up until 4-6 where they basically get to superhero it up in contrast. Also, I notice you never tried to explain just why "T-virus leeches absorb Marcus' memories and basically resurrect him" involves "also half the time he swans around looking like a robe-wearing bishounen choir boy who occasionally breaks out into song". 😁 (I mean, not to kinkshame, you do you Marcus... except for the part where you decide to destroy the world... but seriously, what.)
@@notcole That said, I meant to mention that I at least appreciate that, out of all the soldier-cops in STARS, Rebecca at least gets a "bulletproof" (yes, yes) vest that saves her when Wesker (who presumably knows she's wearing it and does this anyway?! when you got a weird creepy crush, I guess) shoots her.
For me, anything that looks and feels like REmake is already a win. My only gripes with 0 are the monster designs, most of them are X but big. I understand from a viewpoint of, this are the byproducts of having the virus being developed in a place surrounded by forest but even so. Despite that it has my favorite Tyrant design in the Proto Tyrant.
This made me remember how back in the days when the first RE5 trailer was released some of us thought the person in the trailer was Billy due to the game being set in Africa.
@@LM-jz9vhit’s not the lack of an item box it’s the layout of the games areas and progression. Instead of being in one big area like the mansion that you’re constantly back tracking in, you’re put in a handful of medium size areas. yeah I get at least one comment saying this every time I say it out loud 😂 My first name is Cole though, so it honestly doesn't really matter which way you say it :)
Nah i, for the love of all sacred things, just cannot like this game oh and believe me, i tried before, i mean, not having an item box and just dropping items on the floor, having to deal with both characters at the same time and be sure that none of them get stuck in a dangerous room with enemies, which by the way, are by none the worst ones in the entire series (freaking Eliminators), and for some dumb reason not having Billy being able to mix his own herbs, also the plot from Rebecca perspective makes no sense at all, like not get me wrong, she's a bada$$ but still, if she was able to survive ALL OF THIS then why she was almost gets kill by a regular Hunter in RE1, again, its makes no sense, so yeah to me RE0 is either (plain and simple) "the worst of the good games or the best of the worst games" in the series, and all together "one the RE games of all time", and to think that people pair this one with Code: Veronica, crazy folks indeed.
Insane to me that og RE3 is generally well liked, but not RE0. At least RE0 doesn't feel like it has an identity crisis, it's classic RE horror close to it's best, unlike RE3.
Idk, RE0 is a decent classic Resident Evil game, but it's not great. Billy sucks as a character, the removal of item boxes sucked, and playing as Billy and Rebecca at the same time sucked. If you have ai control the other character you'll end up wasting ammo. I played through 0 one time. I have no real desire to do it again. Kinda like Code Verinica. Its a good classic re game but eh
I'm glad you enjoyed it but this game was a miserable experience for me. I beat it and then immediately uninstalled it and haven't touched it since lol. The inventory management made it not fun for me.
@@GhoulReviews I redid the whole train section 3 times just to have ammo for the facility(i even killed the scorpion boss with a knife) but ever since then I did not have the motivation to touch the game again
The issue with Rebecca is that if she was that she should have died like her team if that much a rookie like we met her in RE1. Had she survived, she would be more experienced by a few hours than the rest of the team, which would be jarring and she would explain events they didn't know about and present their own issues with a new mutation. Zero shouldn't have been made, but they milk the series like no other, thus it's many narrative issues.
I think Rebecca is an underrated protagonist. She survived for days before Alpha team showed up. She was also 19 at the time.
she was actually 18 just barely outta high school but still, she's very underrated nonetheless
She did only survive the night before arriving in the Spencer mansion. The storylines only take place hours apart.

The "how did Rebecca go from kicking ass in Zero to being weak and helpless in 1/REmake" thing is just an extra layer of "hey, uh, what?" over really the whole baseline of "Rebecca is 18 years old but already field medic for a super-elite weirdly (even for American police) militaristic police squad _and also_ their helicopter mechanic, all of which should require _way more time_ in training, education, prior work experience, etc. than is available by then, no matter how much of a "child prodigy" you are."
It's a shame, because I _do_ like Rebecca's character and even...
We'd be here all day if I started talking about the leeches 😂
That's a whole other level of "wtf is even going on??" 🤣
@@notcole That said, I meant to mention that I at least appreciate that, out of all the soldier-cops in STARS, Rebecca at least gets a "bulletproof" (yes, yes) vest that saves her when Wesker (who presumably knows she's wearing it and does this anyway?! when you got a weird creepy crush, I guess) shoots her.
Started this series and am going through 0 right now as my first game. Cant believe i somehow picked the hardest one 😭
How on earth did they not think to account for the plot in the REmake when Zero was already in development?
For me, anything that looks and feels like REmake is already a win. My only gripes with 0 are the monster designs, most of them are X but big. I understand from a viewpoint of, this are the byproducts of having the virus being developed in a place surrounded by forest but even so. Despite that it has my favorite Tyrant design in the Proto Tyrant.
This made me remember how back in the days when the first RE5 trailer was released some of us thought the person in the trailer was Billy due to the game being set in Africa.
I mean, it is them being bit in the ass by their greed in this case. Spencer clearly gave the OK for Marcus to be killed.
Ik this is off topic but you gotta play Silent Hill at some point especially after the release of the remake
I Think I heard that re0 is getting a remake
re:0 and cvx deserve every bit of hate they get.
I enjoy it. Resident Evil Zero
My view of 0 was always a fantastic game held back by the WORST enemies and bosses
You mean 23 people. Billy was said to have killed 23 people.
RE0 is an unpolished gem, and the remake could make it great
26? I thought Billy supposedly killed 23
Agreed
Say it louder for those in the back!
I tried replaying it and rage quit after getting stun locked by Monkeys lol.
Those monkeys might actually be worse than the leech men 🤣
poor resident evil 0 is a great resident evil game full of bad rewiev all becouse people don t know how to play it
The main problem is the lack of item boxes.
@@LM-jz9vhit’s not the lack of an item box it’s the layout of the games areas and progression. Instead of being in one big area like the mansion that you’re constantly back tracking in, you’re put in a handful of medium size areas. Once you completely finish that area you’re onto the next so you have to try to get all your items that you want/need from one area to the next
i love zero but goddamn is it annoying,i just can't finish it i don't have the patience.
Points out a ton of the game's flaws and shortcomings, then concludes it's underrated. Sure Jan.
Biggest problem with the inventory. HOOKSHOT
I thought it was pronounced like "coal"...
yeah I get at least one comment saying this every time I say it out loud 😂
My first name is Cole though, so it honestly doesn't really matter which way you say it :)
This game was way way better then resident evil 3 remake.
I always thought Zero was fine. Just not as good the rest of the og resi games.
Insane to me that og RE3 is generally well liked, but not RE0. At least RE0 doesn't feel like it has an identity crisis, it's classic RE horror close to it's best, unlike RE3.
As a prequel it didn’t deliver. It needed more Bravo team and less Billy 🤷🏼♂️
It really is weird that Bravo Team had so little presence in this game outside of Rebecca 🤔
gonna have to disagree.
Zero wasn’t overrated. The hook shot ruined this game. Also, the shotgun consumed 2 inventory spots but in RE1 it only consumed 1. Bad design.
You finished it? I dropped it after 2 hours of gameplay
@zsoltifulop9324 lol did you at least get off the train? 🤣
@@GhoulReviews I redid the whole train section 3 times just to have ammo for the facility(i even killed the scorpion boss with a knife) but ever since then I did not have the motivation to touch the game again
@@zsoltifulop9324 lol that's fair enough 🤣 the train section is the best part anyway lol
RE Zero was awful. This video is awful.
the game was trash overall
Not underrated at all, was a total chore to play.
You have to stop forgetting to add things to these reviews...
