i swear ive used the grappling hook with billy because i usually do the second rooftop part of the train with him... which is strange because i remember reading on the item description it only supports a certain amount of weight.
Billy can you use the shot to but it can be very awkward I think you could even get stuck unable to return I'm not sure on that definitely messed up on my first play I had Billy go up with the hook shot but he can't combine herbs or chemicals get about what I'm talking about
@@roastytoasty8559 your and you're remembering correctly I was just pointing it out but then so you're coming after so yeah it was right Billy can use up shot to can use hookshot too also Billy is better at taking on the bosses huh
@@davidlilley2736 i wonder if billy is carrying too many heavy items if the line would break and give you a your dead screen maybe? i just always wondered why the hook shot had a weight limit on it haha.
This is my complaint as well. Zero was sold as the idea of Bravo during their bullshit before Alpha. Now I did not expect to see the same lay out in the Mansion with Bravo characters but I damn well thought they would play a major role in the story.
Why they hell not have Richard with rebecca he lives till the mansion? Severely missed opportunity. Especially bc you find rebecca with him during chris scenario minus the first aid spray assault
@@wuldntuliktonoptb6861 I'm okay with Billy only because my introduction with Zero was from the EX files in RE2 on N64. I do not mind playing two characters at once, I just didn't like the fact they violated standard gameplay features in early Resident Evils and changed all of it for Zero. No item boxes (This didn't piss me off as bad as it did some people),and women usually have 8 slots while men have 6, Rebecca has 6 for some dumb ass reason, all long guns take two slots when traditionally only power weapons only take 2, shotguns are normally just a single slot. To be the biggest issue was not including Bravo in a larger role. But at least they were smart enough to explain Edward who was only mentioned in the lore and never seen before Zero.
Zero had a lot of potential and tried some new things which I can appreciate, but overall it just falls short. It's a gorgeous game especially the HD version. It has some great moments and atmosphere. The story and the trash item system really drag the game down though.
Yeah, it’s one of those games I really want to like, but ultimately don’t. The game makes itself impossible to enjoy completely. As soon as I feel like I’m having fun, something irritating happens and messes with that old school RE flow that I love. Shame really :/
While I do love this game ,the story is absolutely ridiculous and is hard to connect it to Remake in tone. Still the game has one of the best soundtracks of the series, and it was the last true classic RE game!
@@thebonecone It's such a bummer too cause there is some really cool stuff in the game. Out of all the classic fixed camera angle resident evil games It's the one I have the hardest time going back and replaying. I still have beat it around 7 or 8 times since the gamecube days but it's like I'm forcing myself to play it and it feels like a chore when I do (mostly due to the item management). Then I compare that to the original resident evil remake which I have beat over 40 times and it's still a blast on every single playthrough.
@@metaldiscipline3955 I agree the soundtrack is awesome and is definitely a highpoint along with the graphics and overall atmosphere. I don't hate zero at all and I don't think it's the worst mainline resident evil game, but for being the last classic game in the series I expected so much more.
@Craig Adams basically my story too lol I bought a GC for the REmake and got 0 alongside it. Fanboyism made me like it for so long until I couldn't ignore its issues
Just treat this dumb ass game like it doesn't exist. It interfere with the first game narrative with it's shoe horned stupid shit. Singing leech man, Wesker, Rebecca is a fucking pro in this game tho in RE1 she's a noob.
Imagine if the Leech Monster's story was done in a more sympathetic way like Lisa Trevor in RE1 Remake. I think the monster searching for it's creator as well as the man who killed him and displaying it's emotions through actions instead of hammy dialogue would've been more compelling to me. Think of it like Boris Karloff's interpretation of the Frankenstein Monster.
yeah felt like a tough 💊 to swallow, even tho i loved the game but it didn’t give me the energy and motivation for a next play through unlike REmake or the older games which i played multiple times…
You just dump them in the main halls, it’s no different than using an item box but there’s just abunch of shit on the floor. It’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be because you were already backtracking to certain rooms for items regardless
I liked the way item storage was handled in this game... They could have made it a bit more obvious when or if shortcuts open up and which rooms are better fitted to act as hubs. The execution wasn't flawless but I'd like to see them take another shot at this mechanic
The worst part about RE0 is its a terrible prequel that doesn't connect well to the original trilogy. RE1 Remake did that just fine. And the story is arguably as bonkers as RE CV. An opera singing leach man...wth...
@@amuroray9115 RE 1 is the first story, that was remaked with some additions. RE0 was made after and tells the story of what happened before the first one, this is a prequel.
@@Walamonga1313 Story was fine until RE4 and 0 came in and added a bunch of crazy crap. There was just the T and G Viruses, and bio-weapons with a shady organization linked behind everything that always got off scott-free despite their best efforts. That was it. Now there's idkwtf viruses, parasites, alien bugs, Wesker children, mold, WWE Chris, etc. They bloated a good tried and true zombie formula into a typical Japanese convoluted anime storyline that's been adapted from a video game, that was adapted into a movie, had a Christmas special, a manga. It's a clusterfuck now. RE ended at 3 in my book.
RE0 was the first RE game I ever played as a child and was instrumental in developing my love for the series. I think that the story is as cheesy as any of the other stories, but not any worse, and the graphical overhaul made the suspension of disbelief a little harder for the player. I love the game to this day and even replayed it at the beginning of this year along with RE1 and found myself enjoying it far more than the latter game when played back to back from each other. The bosses leave a lot to be desired but the atmosphere is so much more tense in my eyes because of the two character gameplay. There are times when you feel safe and secure because you have both characters together and a full armament, just to have one of them start tanking hits and become close to death, then you have to carefully navigate to either a saved healing item, or hope to find a new one somewhere else. Or, when you get to a point where the characters have to separate, you immediately feel disadvantaged by being alone with no backup suddenly. I'm not saying it's a perfect game, but I feel like it is severely underrated by the majority of the fanbase because it didn't have series favorites in it, and the leeches were a one off enemy. I think the game gets delegated to spin-off status instead of mainline entry by a lot of people because of this and because of it's mostly self contained storyline, which makes sense but also tends to make most people forget about it when talking about the series as a whole. I don't want to write a huge review of the game in this comment section so I'll stop with this final sentiment: I don't think that it tried to "fix" nonexistent issues, I think it attempted to shake up gameplay without completely revolutionizing the series like RE4 eventually did and failed because it sat in limbo between being fresh and new, and being the same old RE game with better graphics which could appeal to different sections of the fanbase in different ways. Also at 10:28 you mention that Rebecca is the only one that can make use of the hookshot... This is not the case. I believe the weight limit that it is said to have in the manual when you pick it up is why you may have thought that, but that's the lore reason as to why it can't carry both of them at the same time, but it can be used by Billy as well. This adds a bit of player agency and can make some points (I'm mostly thinking about the church/lab area) a little more or less tedious based on that decision.
I remember getting a sinking feeling when I got the message that I couldnt drop another item because the room was already full of stuff that should have been in an item box anyway. But, despite having to leave gear lying around all over, and having to trek back for it from the next area, (AND the stuff about trained pet leaches), I still think it's worth playing and solid canon.
I quit playing it towards the end of the train section, because I really hated switching between the two characters. Watching someone else play it in 4K HD was the only way I enjoyed the game. I appreciate the TH-camrs that do that sort of thing: Survival Horror Network, Gamer's Little Playground, PB Horror Gaming, you guys are the best!!!
Regarding how James Marcus fits into the darker tone or lack thereof, along with RE0’s lack of connections to RE1/RE2/RE3, I actually thought of how Marcus could have been retooled to partially address this. I am copying and pasting my idea below, if you would like to read it… After I thought about this for a while, my biggest issue with his backstory/abilities was how his Queen Leech inexplicably absorbed his memories and duplicated his personality. Through RE3: Nemesis and RE1 Remake (regarding Lisa Trevor), the classic Resident Evil games already introduced the Nemesis Alpha parasite, a monster whose special ability was to act as a secondary/replacement brain for Umbrella’s T-Virus monsters. So I thought it was a mistake for RE0 to not just have James Marcus use one of those parasites to preserve his own consciousness, rather than inventing an entirely different monster randomly possessing that same ability, for seemingly no reason. What I propose is that James Marcus’ backstory should involve him experimenting on himself with the NE-Alpha parasite, right before Spencer orders his assassination. After the assassination attempt, Umbrella’s higher-ups intend to use his corpse as another test subject for the T-Virus, not knowing that the parasite has duplicated his mind and will preserve it throughout the whole process of zombification. Retaining his human intelligence/memories and possessing the added abilities of the parasite, the zombie James Marcus outwits his captors, breaks out of confinement, and then leaks the T-Virus to get revenge on Umbrella. This can be the specific incident, which later inspires Umbrella to try merging the parasites with a Tyrant to create RE3’s Nemesis. Regarding the Mimicry Marcus leeches, I actually enjoyed those enemies a lot, even if I did not particularly like the Queen Leech. Therefore, I think the leeches could still be in the game, albeit as another one of Marcus’ beloved “pets” which he indirectly controls. The final boss battle could have Marcus behaving like a hybrid of the Pale Head zombies in new RE2/RE3, Lisa Trevor, Alex Wesker’s malformed state in RE Revelations 2, and Nemesis’ final form in original RE3, with some leeches helping him out too. Regarding the use of opera music, James Marcus could just play some opera songs on a turntable and/or broadcast it on the facility’s speakers for his own amusement.
I know there's the little nod to Nemesis when Billy says that drawn out "S.T.A.A.A.R.S", but the timeline just wouldn't add up. There's only 2 months between RE 0/1 and RE 3. That's wayyy not enough time to capture a dude, begin experiments on him, realize that he's T-Tyrant Project material, successfully implant the experimental parasite, AND program him to hunt the stars. I realize that Nemesis had to be programmed in that time crunch window, but his body had to be cooking for way longer than that.
@@BlottaMcTablets it's more a joke about how Billy is just dead now 😆 That being said, he would probably have extensive medical records being in the military. Also there are people who would rather him stay quiet about what he experienced in the military. It seems like an easy recon to have the military and umbrella mutually benefitting from Billy's disappearance. 🤔
The increase in graphics between N64 generation and GameCube generation may be the most impressive of all time. But I say that about every generation, with perhaps the exception of the most recent.
I know what you mean. The leap between Gen 7 and 8 is simply underwhelming and that's hardly even in comparison to the differences between the other generations of consoles.
I rank this game as 2nd after REmake. Dont really get the qualms about the story, all of RE, aside from RE1/Remake have nonsensical stories that are made the move the game. I think RE0 has one of the best levels/ambiance in the series, the only thing that genuinely pissed me off was that you had to go back a long way to get the hookshot after the bat fight, and thats my only qualm with the "no item box", oh and the leechmen enemies are obnoxiously difficult. Speaking of difficulty, i feel like this is the hardest RE game to date, on normal difficulty at least. Also, that ending, bittersweet and a good way to end an RE game
The alternate controls worked pretty well for RE0 imo, whereas in remake it feels like it makes the game a little too easy... Probably because of how strong and annoying hunters and leechmen can be lol
I also don't get the hate, I think it's either a case of git gud or people too young to have played NES - SNES era games, so they're not used to actual difficulty or having to retry and make progress. All classic RE titles are designed to have the player improve through trial and error, you need patience to really enjoy these games.
seems that people only complain cause they can, i love everything about this game, and it's really funny how some shit on RE0 but suck off RE4, to me RE4 is one of the worst RE games, as a stand alone action shooter it's amazing but as a RE game that's where the franchise lost it's identity.
@@hiramsiqueiros9018 In this crazy fandom, you'll find people programmed to say 'The main trilogy is the best', 'Zero and Code: Veronica sucks', '2 is the best classic RE', '4 is the best Resident Evil', 'oUtBrEaKs wErE aHeaD oF iTs tImE', '7 and 8 aren't true RE games', etc... and be careful if you don't agree with them, they're annoying when arguing... Personally, the main trilogy isn't perfect (specially the 2 last games) 2 is good but not the best classic RE Zero and Code: Veronica are 100% RE and they're actually challenging 4 isn't the best RE Outbreaks weren't ahead of its time, I don't consider a cooperative (2 or more real people playing as a team) RE game ahead, the actual RE experience has been always on singleplayer. Besides, Outbreak is just more of the same, more of Raccoon City... At least, CV and RE4 tried to offer a different story... I think the best RE game (by far) is the remake of the very first RE
@@RamssCoreM I scare off the weirdoes by saying "RE6 was great, RE3Make and RE4Make are soulless ESG grabs, and Operation Raccoon City was a fun experiment".
I honestly HOPE they remake this. RE0 is one of the weaker games in the series. I loved it at first, but now that I look back at it, I realize that it was indeed very flawed. I want to see the ENTIRE Bravo Team play a big role in a RE0 Remake, not just Rebecca, and Billy Coen (A character who appeared once, and then just disappeared for the rest of the series). And Wesker being the main antagonist makes a lot more sense. James Marcus was certainly an interesting character, but I do think he was just a little too fantastical for the series. I mean, control leeches with OPERA SINGING???? That is stretching it a little bit. I also think that the enemy roster was seriously lacking, with most of the bosses just being a giant version of a normal creature. Resident Evil 0 could've been so much more, and I really hope they do a remake that does much better justice to the series.
@@AleK0451 I think the difference is that Resident Evil 1 builds them. Before fighting the Giant Snake, you see Richard hurt by it. You see it moving around, it's similar for the other creatures, but in RE:0 these monsters just appear out of nowhere and you fight them. It's very uninspired, it's almost as if the developers couldn't care at all.
I was 16 when this game dropped and I got grounded for shouting "What the fuck is the point?" when the Scorpion drops from the ceiling. Absolutely hated playing it through to completion the first time round, but it's now bizarrely one of the titles that I go back to. It's kinda weird when that happens. I loved P.N.03 at the time, but I literally can't even play it anymore.
I love it personally, always have. I just recently did a hard playthrough, and God damn I forgot how brutal it was, but it felt so good beating the queen with like 5 pistol bullets left and Rebecca throwing Billy a gun she didn't have, and one that would definitely have no ammo in it to kill the boss. Definitely my favorite game in the series, love the challenge, and the no item box isn't as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be... Just be extra careful about item management.
Tbh I finish this game once in my life and that was an extremely frustrating playthrough. Reached the final boss with almost no health items and little to no ammo. I still can’t believe I finished it without dying more than 3 times. I think that after the train section, the game just isn’t as fun as it could be, it becomes this tangle of having to remember where you put items + uninspired bosses + trying to make it without getting killed. I should try it again and have some fun with it, but then remembering al the things I have to go through with this game just makes me less excited about that idea. Great video btw!!
You know the map shows you every single item you place down, and you can filter by item type as well. People grip that there isn't an 'Item box" but for god sake, the entire game is your item box. Pick a room. Any room.
The writing in RE0 really is what kills this game, hookshot not withstanding. You've got a villain who is basically what Spencer was going for with his ubermensch genetic chicanery. Marcus ended up an immortal super being transformed by the virus, but they chalked his motivation up to wanting the world to burn "in an inferno of hate", only to then have him inexplicably transform in to a giant leech boss because we needed a big bad boss fight for the ending.
Thank u ! Finally someone acknowledging marcus as a srs threat;like esp whn given the fact his leeches are the MOST compatible lifeforms as far as vanilla progenitor virus, which if u know ur lore is so damn lethal not even albert wesker or lisa trevor can survive it,like technically speakin : marcus is the only villain in RE whos able to bond with progenitor on a cellular level, somethin tht was impossible even with ndipaya kings,so tht alone shoulda put him much higher as far as danger level, and had the writin been solid : given marcus's unique ability of cellular manipulation/malleablity,hed have pretty much been able to do anythin Also as far as his impact on grander story : marcus deserves the title of overarching series villain more than spencer, wesker and esp miranda;cause of tht guy,all of umbrellas viral research exists today plaguing the world, and hes the only villain who actually accomplished his goal which is revenge on umbrella, and world bein in constant turmoil and almost ending a few times, and to top it all off,if it werent for marcus, project W and project veronica woulda never come to fruition, since without him creating the 1st successful T virus base, none of this woulda happened
You guys are being to hard on the game. The story fits well and for the time the gameplay was very impressive. Even to this day the graphics are still impressive and in some ways almost better than the RE engine. You can tell that they put a lot of effort into this game. You can’t compare the gameplay to the 2002 remake for this was meant to be its own thing.
Happy Halloween Boulder! I see youre doing a Re retrospective lately and its a good move for the channel. This kind of content is how i found your channel. Keep it up and long term growth will come
I'd say it's one of the weaker titles in the series to begin with, but man oh lord does the removal of item boxes and the dual inventory system make it so, so much worse. Such a shame, as I remember being so excited for it when the first N64 screenshots emerged back in the day!
This will always be my favorite of the series. Aside from having a crush on Rebecca as a kid it was with me the most through my childhood and I never got bored with it even after 4 came out.
I personally really enjoyed Re0. I feel it's one of my favorite 'classical' Resident Evils. The controls were tight and responsive, I feel the puzzles were good, combat is decent, and Billy and Rebecca ended up being some of my favorite characters in RE. I feel complaining about dropping items on the floor is kinda like complaining about Ashley in the original Re4. It's really not hard once you know what you're doing, you just need to plan ahead. And that's kinda survival horror in a nutshell. You really only have to shuffle items a few times moving from one area to another. Plus the graphics are really well done, especially considering the time period the original game came out.
The Gamecube had some absolutely amazing load times, considering the amount of data being streamed. From what I remember back when it was still "Dolphin", apparently Miyamoto himself said he wouldn't be satisfied switching to a disc system unless the load times could be seamless in his upcoming games. Part of how they managed this also ended up one of the weaknesses of the system. Those funny half sized discs that don't have near the capacity of an XBox or PS2 DVD? That's part of the secret. Their small physical size meant the laser had less distance to travel to reach any particular track. The other trick involved dev kits that included many tools for optimizing where data was physically placed on the disc to better allow developers to make sure similar data was stored in physically close areas. Of course, that last bit does require developers to keep that in mind, so Capcom still did an amazing job here.
I finished 6 once and didn't like it, back when it came out. Almost 10 years later (couple months ago) a friend convinced me to rebuy it on PC and play with him. I thought maybe with time my opinion would change. Nope, it still sucks. In fact, I think I hate it even more now.
RE6 is a great game that falls flat along those who don't like action-style controls. If you LIKE the tank controls, it's less likely that you'll LIKE the ability to do skill-based rolling dodges that rely on reading patterns rather than just pressing Jill's Magical Evade Button.
I’m glad Resident Evil 0 exists because it’s the only Resident Evil game that focuses on a underused character. You can only play as Rebecca Chambers in Resident Evil 0. Capcom needs to lay off Chris Leon and Claire and focus on characters like Rebecca and Barry.
And also massively underused characters like Sheva, Helena, and Jake. Oh, and HUNK. Always HUNK. I want to see Jake and HUNK's buddy cop action adventures played alongside survival horror sections where a weaker protagonist has to fight the same enemies that they blitz through.
"Uninspired" is right. I was fine with the RE0 enemy types, the dropping items, and even Billy... but the plot is stupid even for an RE game (I do not believe that this happened before RE, that Rebecca fled to the mansion and just sat there HELPLESSLY after a huge adventure), and the whole thing felt superfluous. I wouldn't rank it below RE6 though.
This is an assessment error. Rebecca is not a fighter. She never has been - just look at the animated film Vendetta. Who fights in the game's cinematics? Billy. You have to separate the cinematics (canon) and the gameplay: how you play (non-canon). When you look at it that way, it makes sense.
@@Darkjack-FR Well, technically she does have to fight a tyrant at least once xD Then there's the optional second encounter and bat boss fight. Also, I think they show her having some kind of ptsd in umbrella Chronicles (not sure if that scene is canon, I know the re-telling sections are not)
@@unsavourylittlerunt Just once ^^. Indeed. The other good example about Rebecca is her attacks in RE5 Mercenaries. She does little damage. I guess her "ptsd" is canon. But that's right, some sections aren't canon.
I would swap enemy types and the plot. I didn't mind the plot at all, though it does bother me a bit that it feels so disconnected to 1. But the enemies are so annoying imo
It was a roller coaster for me with this game. My first playthrough was on hard difficulty. It started very nice and almost smooth with the train section, but I knew it was just an introduction before the main event will start. When I came to mansion I still thought everything is good until I met my first Leech Marcus. It was quiet a downhill from there as I've constantly tried to survive with almost no ammo or healing items. I've stuck on Centipede as I barely had ammo to deal with it, knifing it to death. After that thigs started to pick up a little until monkeys entered the scene. Barely surviving them I came to the Bat boss. It was another hard boss for me as I had very little ammo to deal with it as well. Somehow I've managed to kill it. From this point things started to click for me. It became easier to manage both characters and items, dealing with Leeches and other bosses. With Tyrant I misread achievement section and thought I need to knife it to death, so I conserved ammo both times only to learn that there is no achievement here. Really it was a smooth experience as I've conserver an excessive amount of ammo and healing items the even the final boss wasn't much of a challenge. Mechanics with dropping items anywhere was the best feature for me to the point that it's kinda hard for me to play other classic RE titles without it. Storage boxes are nice, but it takes time to get to them just to drop one item, so you can go back and pick one item that you might need to drop in the box as well (I recalling my first playthrough of original Resident Evil). Maybe being able to have both drop mechanics and separate boxes could add some value, but I honestly can't see it. It's not hard to look at the map to see where and what items you dropped. Things like hookshot wasn't much trouble for me either as in general you don't need run very far to get all your dropped stuff, especially if you take time to move everything from main hall to lab. Two space items was a trouble, but manageable. In terms of inconsistencies with Rebecca, I blame REmake team not taking into account what was already started on N64. It's actually even more jarring as REmake didn't really tried to fix the original's plot. It annoys me that by choosing Jill, Rebecca simply doesn't exist in here scenario. And the worst thing is playing as Chris is just as dull as in original since Rebecca didn't do much in his scenario. I remember watching some video on RE0 development history that it was already considered even before RE1 was released. They had a lot of scrapped ideas, so I thought that they didn't have much time to do everything they want. Maybe with REmake they didn't want to spoil RE0 stuff with Rebecca, so they decided to not change anything and roll with it. For Billy character I can say only one thing: if the character doesn't annoy me, I have no problems. Yeah, we don't know much about the guy and he's kinda there for the most part... just like Rebecca really. I actually think this is a Billy game with Rebecca parts attached to it. I may be wrong about this, but that's how I see it. In conclusion my initial thought was it's going to be like Code Veronica because of opera stuff and slow-mo in early cut-scenes, so I was already ranked it below any classic RE games on my list, making it on par with CV. Through mid game it was at the bottom of my list on par with RE6, it was just bad. Past the middle when it's all started to click with me and I've learned to deal with the game it came on top of my list quiet fast. Doesn't really matter really as I think it's a good game with flaws.
Lol can't imagine starting on hard. I thought the game was tough on normal and I've been playing RE all my life. Hard left me with almost no resources both times I beat it on that difficulty. And that's while knowing what happens so I could plan ahead.
@@Walamonga1313 My thing is to always start on the hardest difficulty possible unless it has a gimmick like all killed enemies respawn or die once and your safe file deleted and other stuff.
The atmosphere of this game always pulls me in. Its just perfect. 3/4 of the way through I'm usually wondering why I'm playing ZERO of all games, but for a long time all we had was REmake & RE4 to play on PS4 besides ZERO , yes there was 5/6 & Revelations but those aren't classic RE style games, which I love. So long story short I've learned to love Zero over the years and have beaten it numerous times. Great review btw
An excellent review of this game, thank you for putting in the time to provide us with it. I have seen quite a few already, but most usually agree on the same points, such as the flawed system concerning the ability to drop items. I can only agree - this title was my first Resident Evil game, and it was such a chore to try and take everything with you. Indeed, the main hall served as my storage location as well, and on subsequent sessions I would always dread that moment of having to turn both characters into pack mules in order to carry every bloody item from there to the lab - and then from there to the underground facility. Must I mention that on the GameCube it was necessary to change the disk whenever going to the lab? As you mentioned, that hook shot is such a pain - just a (mostly) useless burden you need to keep around, as well as the only item in the whole game (ignoring weapons) that needs to travel that much. And once you are finally able to discard the damn thing, it does not even feel that relieving because you still need to carry that arsenal and such around, made worse by the section where Rebecca ends up on her own again after Billy falls. Honestly, I really love this game, mainly because I grew up with it; however, that inventory management has got to be one of the worst executions of an idea in the history of ever. I would come back to Resident Evil Zero far more often if it was not for all this nonsense. Anyway, like I initially said, a lovely review - have a good day ♥
Have you ever wanted to look over the Outbreak stuff? I'd think, given your thoughts on the various games you've reviewed so far, I think it would be interesting to see how you think about something with a heavier co-op focus
I was really excited when pictures and commercials started popping up for RE0. It wasn't until 2009 that I got to play it, and REmake, because I had a Wii. I played REmake and feel in love with it, then put RE0 into the console, full of excitement.... And lost interest when the characters first got split up. It was such a different feel then what RE had always been. It wasn't until 2010 that I picked up the controller to give it another go, and I was shocked to find that I actually really liked the game. Once I figured out the co-op single player deal, I found it really cool. No item boxes required real strategy to be used, and was very realistic. No magical item boxes if this happened in real life! Billy isn't my favorite part, and perhaps the game could have been better if it was Rebecca and, say, Rodrigo. The opera singing Marcus felt weird, and I could have done without it, and I think that hurt it the most; gave me Code Veronica flashbacks. The biggest issue I have, and it was pointed out, was the lack of Rebecca's character continuity from Zero to REmake. She should have been a badass in REmake so it helped to tie Zero in better. Even without weapons, she could have been doing something to avoid/injure the hunter, allowing Chris the time to kill it, rather then curl up in a ball ready to die. After Chris dispatched the Hunter he could have asked, "are you hurt?", and Rebecca could have given her signature thumbs up and replied, "that was nothing, you should have been around last night!" Perfect foreshadowing for Zero's future release. An opportunity not taken that really does hurt the franchise.
You can't say you've been blocked by Hideki Kamiya and not elaborate lmaoo For me: i got RE0 and RE4 on my gamecube on the same day. I ended up playing RE0 first and struggling with the lack of item box, dealing with a second NPC , and just overall did not have the best time playing zero, despite really happy to see Rebecca again. It just didnt feel fun to me. You brought it up, but the lack of dialogue exchange between Billy and Rebecca was a huge missed opportunity, as well as extremely uninspired bosses.
I've always seen the final release of RE0 as being a remake, as it was in full development for N64, wasn't scrapped but halted and then remade using better hardware.
I still enjoy Zer0. I would like another title with characters working together in single player that you can swap between. (But still horror unlike 5/6) Obscure 1/2 had a similar cool gimmick. It is weird to me that the SMG is new game plus, it's like they didn't know how to balance it so just made it new game plus.
The reason why Rebecca looks different is because the devs used some celebrity’s likeness that they didn’t have the rights to when the remaster came out. I guarantee the way they change between rooms is by having both characters rooms loaded at the same time
The time it takes to change between characters when they're in the same room vs somewhere else is pretty noticeable, they probably only load very basic logic but nothing visual since they can still get attacked in different rooms
I love RE0. REmake is the best imo though, but 0 is probably my second favorite to play. Is the story odd, yes, but I think its a little hypocritical to glorify the over the shoulder games while shitting all over 0 when those games are just as weird.
Honestly what bothers me the most about RE Zero is that it although it was good it had the potential to be GREAT, my original thought was that the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team was going to play a bigger role in the story which was one of my primary reasons for me buying this game, i was hoping to see the game chronicle their battles/struggles throughout the night of July 23rd after the helicopter crash up until their arrival at The Spencer Mansion/Compound on July 24th, and i was sorely disappointed on that end, however i was happy to FINALLY learn what actually caused the T-Virus outbreak at the Spencer Estate, what actually happened to S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team Pilot Edward Dewey and i loved the Wesker/Birkin cameos as well, also i wished that this game was better connected to RE1 Remake, it would've been nice to see some of RE Zero 's lore in that game such as Rebecca telling Chris about Edward's fate, Dr.Marcus, the Umbrella Management Training Facility etc.
@@RyuSaarva 6 is awesome. It's just that half of it is action shooty-stabby stuff that some survival horror fans don't like, and the other half is survival horror with strong protagonists that some survival horror fans don't like.
Loving all the content!!!! I love this game back when it came out, but I was a teenager who was fresh into really discovering my love and addiction to the franchise I replayed this game some years back on the GameCube though and found it to be painfully average. The character swapping for puzzles became more annoying than innovative The level design was fine, but not very inspired or unique past the train The enemies were all pretty bland (so many giant bugs and animals) And the lack of item boxes/dropping items is aggravating. For the promise of answering questions in the series too, it really just raised more. It tiptoes a bit into silly anime territory with the leeches under command of a song BUT.... Despite all that it isn't bad. It's just.... Fine... Ok... Average I think for a while it still managed to be one of the better titles in the series. But since its release so many more much higher quality entries are now available to play or replay. I'll always keep my original copy. But I can't see myself really ever wanting to replay it. Maybe someday I'll start with it on a marathon of playing the 3 remakes, if only because it's so close to the first remake in gameplay. The best thing this game manages to hold up with is the visuals though. It was and still is gorgeous.
I view Rebecca in the first game as having temporary amnesia due to the stress of Zero. She remembers some things but has blocked out the combat aspect.
Hi boulder Punch and I love all the resident evil games in the series franchise and I’m huge hardcore fan of resident evil games and the series franchise and I grew up with resident evil in the 90’s as a kid who grew up with the original ps1 console and resident evil 0 is a personal childhood favorite of mine and it was my first resident evil game on GameCube and I even love the HD remastered version for ps4,Xbox one X, and the Nintendo switch and I played it all the time and resident evil 0 is a godlike awesome and amazing game and I hate when people talk about bad stuff about this game and resident evil 0 is fine the way it is and I’ll fight you tooth and nail about this game and leave resident evil 0 out of this and people don’t give this game any credit the gameplay is awesome and amazing and the story and the boss battle’s are godlike and keep up the awesome amazing work on your channel .❤️🎃
Great video. These are the pros and cons of re0 that I found: Cons: -Environments are too much like re1 rmk. -No storage wasn't a good idea. -Story didn't expand on anything in the RE universe. Pros: -Billy is awesome. -Great ambiance music. -Some of the environments they featured that differ from re1 rmk were really nice.
I know most people arent fans of 0, but before i watch your review i just wanna state how much i love 0. Maybe i just like obfuscated gameplay, but this is def near the top for me
I really like the first parts of the game. The train section is awesome and the training facility is very much like the Spencer Mansion. But then the lackluster story and awful backtracking and lack of item boxes becomes too much of a pain!
Aren't you supposed to die first in order for the virus to take over and reanimate you as a zombie? I don't actually recall what characters in RE were infected and turned zombie while still alive and well, IIRC only the movies did that. For example Marvin was already badly bleeding and unable to move so he likely died first then came back as a zombie.
@@Diwasho There are diary entries in RE1 that tell the tale of someone infected and the virus kills him and then he is reanimated. So the Virus kills you regardless. Marvins injuries may have just speeded his inevitable death up.
@@doc.slingblade3521 No one has immunity from the T or G virus in the original ideas. The way it works is if you get infected by the virus, you will mutate at some point unless the vaccine is present which keeps it in check and gives you powers like in the case of Sherry who benefitted from her dad infesting her with G. What I think happens is that if you take damage from an infested animal, it is POSSIBLE that the virus simply does not transmit the virus. I mean we know that rule is 100% true in real life with virus' that are clearly less lethal than T or G.
You might already know this, but Rebecca's face got changed because she was modeled after Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki for the 2002 release. With the remake, they did not have the likeness rights for Hamasaki's face so they had to change it.
One of my biggest issues with this game is simply picking up items. A lot of times I'm trying to pick up an item and the game keeps focusing on a nearby object instead. This is especially frustrating when trying to evade enemies while doing this. It's also a pain when dropped items are off screen and you're just guessing where they are.
Lol especially if you were like me and had 15 to 20 things 2 feet apart from each other on the mansion main floor. It really let you know you were playing a video game that made a poor design choice.
Currently playing through this. The train is great, the mansion part wasn't horrible, but lack of item boxes hurt. In lab though, holy shit. I spent like an hour trying to carry all of the stuff I accumulated first into church and then underground into the lab itself. Item management actually sucks in this game. And then most weapons take up two weapon slots and each character only having six is the worst. I prefer running one weapon with ammo and one full healing item and having some buffer slots for something that I need to pick up. Having upgradeable inventory would definitely help a lot, even if you decide to completely leave out item boxes. The story I don't hate that much, but it's mostly the story is not about our characters, but it's a story about Umbrella and their schemes. It wouldn't be different, and probably even benefit story if instead of Rebecca it was some other character in the series, or maybe a completely new one entirely. Having a couple of disposable protagonists would actually help the continuity greately. Imagine that you actually play as a couple of abandoned Umbrella grunts that were ordered to guard something on the train and then got attacked out of nowhere. They try to survive and fight, and, in the end, when they defeat Leech Queen, it's revealed that they were double-crossed by Wesker who used them to collect combat data. He kills both characters and then starts operation in Spencer Mansion afterwards. You don't even need to change much. You can even leave weird opera singing villain for all I care. It's definitely weird enough to be in RE.
I wish we got the RE0 original game and RE1.5 maybe. Just out of curiousity. And I do dig the RE0 we have now, but it did need some slight alterations with some things that bother me slightly. I feel that RE0 is kinda anime if you know what I mean. But in all cases, its still a pretty solid game with a flawed story.
I always imagined the cause of the outbreak being the cause of corporate intrigue, conspiracy and ruthless psychopaths in business suits. This was when I was fifteen. I certainly didn’t expect an opera singing leach man. Yeah you got a bit of what I mentioned with Wesker and Birkin betraying said leach man, but what this game did was the worst thing a prequel can do; make the world feel smaller.
18:03, to be fair to them for the teasing, the plan was initially to remake both re2 and re3 in the style of REmake as well. Thus this was possibly less a tease, and was instead a little sneak preview of what REmake 2 would be. Sadly this never happened, and the REmake 2 we got years later was in a very different style to the original and REmake (though REmake 2 being so fantastic softens that disappointment a lot) but at the time it was never meant to be a tease.
i was always leaving ms Chambers in typewriter room while using Billy, only moved her if it was required to progress with story or to bring me some items from my stash.
I think a lot of the criticisms you have are valid. I personally really like Re0 and have a little bias for it but have to agree with you on many points. The no item boxes and hookshot make this game multiple times more frustrating than it needs to be. It really hurts the game more than people would think. I think taking out the hookshot alone would have made the game way better. Eliminators are awful as well, stun locking and bullet sponges. A lot of the bosses are kinda bland as well. The way I tried to connect Rebeccas character from 0 to Remake is that she just kinda broke and snapped mentally for a little bit, being thrown from one nightmare to the next, which made her give up and be hopeless. But I’ll be the first to admit and understand why it’s really off to see her take down a tyrant one game and then be helpless facing a hunter (which she does encounter and fight in 0). It doesn’t necessarily bug me but I understand why you say her characters inconsistent and why people could not like it. I also really personally love the save theme, probably one of my favorites in the series. But really great video! I think the criticisms are fair and the pros you stated are fair as well!
There are a few gameplay differences between Rebecca and Billy. Only she can mix chemicals and herbs, but Billy is the only one able to use a lighter and push heavy objects. He is also more resistant to damages and can shoot better than her. The development of Resident Evil 0 inspired the new direction that the franchise went took with Resident Evil 4. Series creator Shinji Mikami saw how bored and unenthusiastic the development team for Resident Evil 0 was with creating yet another traditional Resident Evil entry like clockwork. Because of this Mikami was determined to make Resident Evil 4 a departure from the series' norms. This is the first Resident Evil not to have the item boxes for storing items away. This is the first port of a Resident Evil released on the Nintendo Wii, and the second Resident Evil game released on the Wii console. The game contains a mini game called Leech Hunter after completing the game. It's where Rebecca and Billy team up and collect blue leech charms (Billy) and green leech charms (Rebecca). This is the first Resident Evil game where the player simultaneously controls two characters, and also the first Resident Evil where you can instantly switch between characters. First main entry Resident Evil game where the player can drop items on the ground without discarding (destroying) the item. The official prequel to the Resident Evil series, which took over the spot for the first Resident Evil movie (2001). In Resident Evil 0, you are responsible for two characters at the same time. If one character dies, the player is instantly netted a game over. Billy is slightly faster than Rebecca, also both characters run more quickly when the player doesn't equip them with a weapon. Despite being advertised as a new direction for Resident Evil by having two characters at once, there are only a very few handful of puzzles that required teamwork. You never really need to split the characters up unless it is story driven (a character falls off a bridge for example). The very first fight against the leech monster in the train can be avoided by running back downstairs. Originally planned for release on the Nintendo 64 console, Resident Evil Zero was going to be released in the Fall of 2000, but production shifted to the Nintendo GameCube sometime in early 2001.
Great video but I'm so confused by the comment that scorpions don't mesh with the world of Resident Evil. In RE1&2, you fight a giant snake, a giant spider, giant sharks, a giant sewer gator, and a living plant. How is your line drawn at giant scorpions?
I also didn't understand how they made the games so close together but somehow still didn't use it as a chance to connect stories. Not to mention the weird geography thing with the Umbrella Laboratory (and...where is everyone? It's not months later lol).
It’s interesting how polarising a topic can be. Personally, it’s my favourite Resident Evil Game, all the ‘frustrating’ gameplay is in my opinion very fun. It checks every box I’d could think of and it’s interesting to see how many dislike the game more than people like it.

Every time RE0 is brought up, I always say this: it should have been about all of BRAVO Team, not just Rebecca
agreed
Allways wanted this myself as it's own game
Zero had a lot of potential and tried some new things which I can appreciate, but overall it just falls short. It's a gorgeous game especially the HD version. It has some great moments and atmosphere. The story and the trash item system really drag the game down though.
Agree 100%
The best way I can sum up this game is, I really wanted to like it.
I get this. I really liked it when I was a teenager and it first dropped.
But a recent replay showed me just how... Mediocre it is

@@WheeledHamster I think lore wise, Billy carried her. The cut scenes show he did the work.

That’s a fun idea. RE0make anyone? Lol

Re0 was painful to play. Going back for items you thought you didn’t need. Ughh
The hookshot is so stupid...
The hook shot ruined this game. Shotguns also used up two spots. They only used up one spot in the REmake. That was dumb.
wow, having to backtrack once on your first playthrough in a re game, horrible.
@@RyuSaarva sure, but the other games have an item bank system. in 0 you always need to go back to the physical location you left the item.
The lack of an item box killed it for me. I cannot think of any other time a single design decision so thoroughly destroyed a gaming experience for me
yeah felt like a tough 💊 to swallow, even tho i loved the game but it didn’t give me the energy and motivation for a next play through unlike REmake or the older games which i played multiple times…
You just dump them in the main halls, it’s no different than using an item box but there’s just abunch of shit on the floor. It’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be because you were already backtracking to certain rooms for items regardless
Item boxes are stupid
I liked the way item storage was handled in this game... They could have made it a bit more obvious when or if shortcuts open up and which rooms are better fitted to act as hubs. The execution wasn't flawless but I'd like to see them take another shot at this mechanic
The lack of item boxes is beneficial for the next runs, where you need to plan your routes well. It's great at the end.
As flawed as RE0 was, it was still nice to see Birkin and Wesker together.
The worst part about RE0 is its a terrible prequel that doesn't connect well to the original trilogy. RE1 Remake did that just fine.
And the story is arguably as bonkers as RE CV. An opera singing leach man...wth...
But RE1 remake isn’t a prequel?
@@amuroray9115 RE 1 is the first story, that was remaked with some additions. RE0 was made after and tells the story of what happened before the first one, this is a prequel.
@@rafaelsantosx oh thanks.
Let's be honest, who the hell plays RE for the story? But regardless, I still don't understand why they couldn't connect it to the first game better
Thank you for this comment. I also love RE0
I am copying and pasting my idea below, if you would like to read it…
After I thought about this for a while, my biggest issue with his backstory/abilities was how his Queen Leech inexplicably absorbed his memories and duplicated his personality.
Billy is captured and turned into nemesis. That's my sincere hope at least.
@@BlottaMcTablets it's more a joke about how Billy is just dead now 😆
That being said, he would probably have extensive medical records being in the military. Also there are people who would rather him stay quiet about what he experienced in the military.
It seems like an easy recon to have the military and umbrella mutually benefitting from Billy's disappearance. 🤔
Pretty sure at the tyrants are made out of children though I'm not sure if that's canon anymore

The increase in graphics between N64 generation and GameCube generation may be the most impressive of all time. But I say that about every generation, with perhaps the exception of the most recent.
I have a feeling they just weren't optimized for N64 yet. They were more used to working with PS1, which the graphics resemble.

Zero and Code: Veronica are 100% RE and they're actually challenging

Resident Evil 0 could've been so much more, and I really hope they do a remake that does much better justice to the series.
in fairness re1 had giant snake, giant spider, giant shark, i think they were keeping that trend going with this game too
RE1 literally had giants snakes and spiders lol
@@AleK0451 I think the difference is that Resident Evil 1 builds them. Before fighting the Giant Snake, you see Richard hurt by it. Absolutely hated playing it through to completion the first time round, but it's now bizarrely one of the titles that I go back to.
It's kinda weird when that happens. I loved P.N.03 at the time, but I literally can't even play it anymore.
me when i went back to play azure dreams
I love it personally, always have. I just recently did a hard playthrough, and God damn I forgot how brutal it was, but it felt so good beating the queen with like 5 pistol bullets left and Rebecca throwing Billy a gun she didn't have, and one that would definitely have no ammo in it to kill the boss. Definitely my favorite game in the series, love the challenge, and the no item box isn't as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be... Just be extra careful about item management.
@@Camelotsmoon same 🤝
the point was to spook you
despite what the consensus on this game is, for me personally, i adore it and all its quirks(not the hookshot or certain enemies tho)
Bear in mind that you can see where every item is in the map, if you do replay it
This is what RE is about, fake RE fan
@@White927 ur mom
omg i had to complete it more than 5 times and do leech mode and wesker mode to platinum it man i was tough
You know the map shows you every single item you place down, and you can filter by item type as well. People grip that there isn't an 'Item box" but for god sake, the entire game is your item box. Pick a room. Any room.
You always including Darksydephil and his fuck ups brings a smile to my face. Please keep including them as often as you can.
Yes haha I love it too. The basement track goes perfectly with his game play too
@@nicholasc3905 Yes the music makes it even better. It perfectly represents his thought process xD
Personally I would've preferred if Marcus/" Leech Clone" had stayed in a humanoid form during the final boss fight
Thank u ! Finally someone acknowledging marcus as a srs threat;like esp whn given the fact his leeches are the MOST compatible lifeforms as far as vanilla progenitor virus, which if u know ur lore is so damn lethal not even albert wesker or lisa trevor can survive it,like technically speakin : marcus is the only villain in RE whos able to bond with progenitor on a cellular level, somethin tht was impossible even with ndipaya kings,so tht alone shoulda put him much higher as far as danger level, and had the writin been solid : given marcus's unique ability of cellular manipulation/malleablity,hed have pretty much been able to do anythin
Also as far as his impact on grander story : marcus deserves the title of overarching series villain more than spencer, wesker and esp miranda;cause of tht guy,all of umbrellas viral research exists today plaguing the world, and hes the only villain who actually accomplished his goal which is revenge on umbrella, and world bein in constant turmoil and almost ending a few times, and to top it all off,if it werent for marcus, project W and project veronica woulda never come to fruition, since without him creating the 1st successful T virus base, none of this woulda happened
I like Resident Evil Zero. It definitely did its own thing and I enjoyed the added layer of difficulty when it comes to inventory management
The slow DVD loading times are still noticeable even on original hardware when playing off a modern SD, mind.
Id replay 0 over 6 anyday. I never even finished 6, that's how much it sucks...
This game is easily the worst RE, for me at least. I could at least get enjoyment out of RE6. This game just pisses me off.
I always start laughing hysterically when I hear the “darksydephil theme”

The atmosphere of this game always pulls me in. Its just perfect. 3/4 of the way through I'm usually wondering why I'm playing ZERO of all games, but for a long time all we had was REmake & RE4 to play on PS4 besides ZERO , yes there was 5/6 & Revelations but those aren't classic RE style games, which I love. So long story short I've learned to love Zero over the years and have beaten it numerous times. Great review btw
Re4 isn’t a classic style re either
Anyway, like I initially said, a lovely review - have a good day ♥
I loved this game as a kid it was one of my favorites. 🤷🏾♂️
Have you ever wanted to look over the Outbreak stuff? I'd think, given your thoughts on the various games you've reviewed so far, I think it would be interesting to see how you think about something with a heavier co-op focus
I agree. Those games are very interesting.
I've thought about it.
Outbreak is such a unique experience, it's really cool and you can still play online on fan servers. Definitely not without its flaws tho

You can't say you've been blocked by Hideki Kamiya and not elaborate lmaoo
For me: i got RE0 and RE4 on my gamecube on the same day.
(But still horror unlike 5/6)
Obscure 1/2 had a similar cool gimmick.
It is weird to me that the SMG is new game plus, it's like they didn't know how to balance it so just made it new game plus.
On re6, make sure to increase the fov/enable auto action for qte's on the settings.
Also for any qte that involves wiggling the stick, you can wiggle both sticks at the same time and it makes it super easy
For real man the weird shit that happens in the castle alone in Re4 is just as bad if not badder
right
Oh, the castle...
If capcom ever remakes RE Zero they should add item boxes and co-op play.
I really enjoyed RE0 when it was released on the GC. Bought the Remaster and enjoyed even more. Also, I love how cute Rebecca looks in the remaster.
Pretty sure billy can use hookshoot as well.
Am I hallucinating about the fact that Billy can use the hook shot
He can use it, unless Capcom changed it for the HD rerelease.
I've replayed RE6 more times than RE0, which should really tell you all you need to know about RE0
well 6 has great replay value.

I really liked this game back in the day. I really hope it gets remade
Loving all the content!!!!
I love this game back when it came out, but I was a teenager who was fresh into really discovering my love and addiction to the franchise
I replayed this game some years back on the GameCube though and found it to be painfully average.
The character swapping for puzzles became more annoying than innovative
The level design was fine, but not very inspired or unique past the train
The enemies were all pretty bland (so many giant bugs and animals)
And the lack of item boxes/dropping items is aggravating.
For the promise of answering questions in the series too, it really just raised more. It tiptoes a bit into silly anime territory with the leeches under command of a song
BUT.... Despite all that it isn't bad. It's just.... Fine... Ok... Average
I think for a while it still managed to be one of the better titles in the series.
Ah yes, the RE game with the Final Fantasy villain.
Then there's The Spirits Within, an FF movie with a RE villain.

Great video! How did Rebecca not get infected after being bit and scratched by the monkeys in the cutscenes?!
That question can be asked for every character in the series, Jill in RE3 remake at lest speculates that they may have some sort of immunity.
@@doc.slingblade3521 Jill gets infected during RE3 so she probably gained anti bodies
By far one of my favourite games in the series. Would take this over 7 and 8 any day
You might already know this, but Rebecca's face got changed because she was modeled after Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki for the 2002 release.
It's definitely weird enough to be in RE.
nice, review. personally loved RE0 when i first played it! new sub bro.
I still love this game it's not a bad game but it has it flaws but the characters could of had better development through
@Craig Adams Stop.
@Craig Adams Yep
Sadly this never happened, and the REmake 2 we got years later was in a very different style to the original and REmake (though REmake 2 being so fantastic softens that disappointment a lot) but at the time it was never meant to be a tease.
oh man i WISH i knew about that way to cheese the bat fight! Thats so cheeky! thanks for sharing it :o
i was always leaving ms Chambers in typewriter room while using Billy, only moved her if it was required to progress with story or to bring me some items from my stash.
I like resident evil zero
I love that DSP's theme has become clowns farting in the basement.
I know for a fact billy can use the hookshot too idk why he kept saying that
I think a lot of the criticisms you have are valid.
I kinda enjoyed RE Zero.
I really thought I'd like it. The train part was so good but for me, it just downward spirals afterwards.
I do think Zero is a good survival horror game, but it's not at the top of the Peak Resident Evil games. Still glad I own it though!
The multiple character control killed it for me. Everything else was superb.
I love RE zero very fun.
