"Best" guitar solo, does not necessarily mean "Fastest", or "Most complex". It can mean "Hits your heart". This Clapton exercise indeed touches the soul.

Exactly. I would like to see some of these so called great guitarists of today play with a slide on their finger or hear them play some Jazz or with an orchestra or maybe play some country or pop. If anyone's number 1 doesn't have an assortment of genre versatility then I don't think you can consider them so great. Speed and tricks are used to cover up mistakes.

The thing that sets Clapton apart, is the fact that his head is nowhere in the equation. It's straight from the heart onto the fretboard. This man changed my life from the time I was 15 yrs old. I used to spend hours playing and rewinding cassette tapes to pick his songs. He may not be God, but he's the best guitar player I've ever heard. That's my humble opinion. Cheers mate!

That look on Clapton's face when Frampton keeps, seemingly to "challenge" him to: Hey Eric, top this lick... - It is priceless. And then Clapton "answers" back with one of his own licks. This is an example of 2 master guitarists having a sort of "Battle of the Bands" except in this case "Battle of the Axes". That Clapton look seems to be of bemusement as if to say: Pete, are you serious? You really think I can't top that lick? Listen up old pal .... Those of us old enough can remember those back yard and local Battle of the Bands ... when Rock n Roll was king. Good stuff all around.

The original released Beatles song is DEFINATELY one of the LEADERS in guitar solo history, kids. Eric was ferocious back then. Just the extreme CONTROLLED bends in that solo bring one to their knees trying to cop it... Some may disagree that it is the best, but I say this...
We wouldnt have hard rock guitar Gibson through a wide open Marshall PLAYED WITH PRECISION, if Eric didnt happen... What? You dont believe me?? LOL. Cream 1966, and John Mayall before that, the Yardbirds before that!!!!! Jeff, Jimi, Jimmy, Billy and a slew of others tried to play with that precision... Gibbons came bloody close, Jimi and Jimmy went off the rails a bit too much, not saying they arent great... But to master it and use Marshalls??? Everyone was in awe of Eric...
It may not be nothing more than blues, but no one, I mean NO ONE until after he wailed with Cream could hold a candle to his precise playing....
No wonder Edward Van Halen said he was his favorite.... Took me a while, but now....I GET IT!!!!!!

What some commenters fail to see (in my opinion) is the relaxed mastery of the masters (old virtuosos). They no longer need to shred or overplay, they are so comfortable with their instrument that they can just let the music flow. I prefer the music of the older people, BB King, Boz Skaggs, and of course these two. They show a mastery earned over a lifetime of playing.

Clapton has no ego when it comes to playing fast / shredding. He can, but he doesn't, and that's why he's great. For most listeners, a memorable melody is that: memorable and a normal tempo helps remembering it later. Shredding may please guitar aficionados but is rather difficult to follow for casual listeners. That's also why most metal bands have global hits with ballads; generally, they're rather good musicians catering to a limited audience, when they break the habit, they tend to go big.

I've seen Eric with Derek & The Dominos, touring with Mark Knopfler and a couple other times. I've seen this video before but it was the entire tune. In any case, it's a portrait of two masters enjoying their craft and each other's work.

After all these years, it's fascinating to hear all these folks talk about ancient times, when they were kids, essentially. Graham Bond, Yardbirds, John Mayall; these fellows, among others, are like a family tree that bore fruit in the mid sixties and continued the gift that was contemporary music. i remember seeing John Mayall's Bluesbreakers on some late-night show on what we knew as 'educational TV' in NE Ohio, in about 66. Little did i know i was watching future rock greats. The same thing happened with the band Zephyr - their guitarist was a fellow named Tommy Bolin, and also had a marvelous singer named Candy Givens (sadly, not as well known). i always thought i knew a bit about the musical history of my time, but TH-cam has shown me that i didn't know shit.

Clapton has a thin clean sound here with no sustain while Peter is going through his Marshall which has balls in his sound and playing.

I had the opportunity to work with both guys on some Lexus stuff. Peter was always friendly and kind of up and positive....Eric was always a bit distant and struggled to make conversation...it was like dealing withTed Kaczynski. Still I tried my best to never miss a Clapton sound check. Two great musicians and I feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to work around them.

A whole lot of people say Eric Clapton was NOT one of the greatest guitar play ever. I say BULLSHIT. I have been listening to Clapton since 1964.He was and IS damn good. Sure Hendrix was great and Jimmie Page was great. Alvin Lee was great Jeff Beck was great.George Harrison was great.Clapton was and still is great. Noise, speed or all sorts of buttons and boxes doesn,t make you a great guitar player. Feeling and soul does. That is why players like Clapton and BB King will live on for ever.

Peter Frampton just exudes happiness when he plays and without doubt that affects Eric Clapton, in just the same way that Clapton's playing affects (for the better) Frampton's. They should have done more work together. Is this either of their best solos? Probably not. But how the listener is affected by solos is influenced by so many things (their experiences, their age, what they were doing whilst listening, I could go on) and for some, this could be. But whatever, it's very enjoyable.

When will people realize there is no best when it comes to music... Clapton ,Reed , Prince .Atkins, Paul , Emanuelle, Walsh ,Young etc etc etc .. It’s all subjective....But I can tell you there are those with attitudes that overshadow their skills...
My all around favorite for talent variety of styles and general persona would be Mark Knopfler...But again that’s my beverage of choice..
