    I'm not even half way through the book and this trailer reminds me nothing of the book. The book seems so much...darker and the movie seems so uplifting

    • @susantherestorer
      @susantherestorer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Trust me, the movie is nearly as dark as the book, but the tone is improved in the movie. It shows that, even though the story is pretty seemingly hopeless, there's still hope, even with it being so dark. The book is great, but I still like much of the movie better.

      I’m sure they didn’t want to make a young adult novel into a rated R movie that’s all.

  • @PinkFox983

    I feel like the people who made this movie didn't understand the book at all. It's not the fact that they left some things out that bothered me. It was the fact that they're making seem like some sort of inspiring story about hope, but it's not. It's supposed to be a bittersweet story that educates, that teaches the audience how words are the most powerful force on this planet, and how devastating the result is when they are misused (example: Hitler). The entire theme is changed in the movie.

      ***** I know, I agree the book was telling a story, just that's it a story about a girl who steals books, the mention nothing about hope in the book?! I'm really disappointed, the trailer was enough to put me off the movie

    • @MadelineWard
      @MadelineWard 9 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      You hit the nail on the head. It was so sugar coated and Hollywood-ized.The movie was OK on its own but in my opinion was a really bad interpretation of the book. Now I want to be a director so I can remake it someday. 😂

    • @anrtaverma5992
      @anrtaverma5992 8 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      +Madeline W please do. Plus having Death as the narrator means we got a much more powerful, realistic and raw view of things. His casual pondering makes you reconsider a lot of stuff. I don't know how they could give a satisfactory movie version of a book about the power of books and words.

      i came to the comments because i was looking for people with exactly your point of view, this is probably one of the best books i have ever read, and i was sooo much looking forward to this movie, especially with goeffrey rush in it, but the trailer put me off and i haven't watched it yet. when i saw who they cast as liesl, i was very much disapointed. her dark hair and dark eyes were very important for the plot, the fact that liesl herself doesn't think she's pretty because of her kind of boyish looks, and then they cast someone who looks like an angel, and has blue eyes and blond hair (you have to think about hitler's ideals of appearance here, and that liesl did NOT fulfill them)
      and not mentioning death (as far as the trailer shows, as said before, haven't watched the movie yet) is just leaving out one of the most important story lines in the book.
      very disappointed, i can not imagine that the author is very happy about that adaptation.

      Pinie Kay i'm kinda disappointed after rewatching this again bc the movie is way too "beautiful-looking" and not at all how i imagined the world in the book (bleak, gray and brown). But it's still a good movie

    For me, this is all too pompous. For me, the book was quiet. Know what I mean?
    The book delivered the message in a far more subtle way, and in its subtleness was louder as any scream could be. It is so poetic, with Death telling the story, I think that poetry got lost in translation to the big screen.

    Bottom line, some people will get this movie and understand the deeper beautiful meaning behind it, and others just won't. They will just see it as another WWII movie. I know people who haven't read it but loved it because they appreciate words, writing, and reading like Liesel and Max did. I've read the book and it's beautiful. I'm sorry some of you guys can't see that.

    I am a 66 year old man and I'll say this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. To start with all the actors fit their character; they are exactly as I would picture them if it were real life. The movie is based on a difficult time period and it portrays a glimpse of the hardships and general life of that time. Finally, the relationship of Rudy and Liesel is just plain cute. Sophie and Nico play out their parts so well it actually brings back the thrill, excitement, hopes and despair of young love even to an old man like me. Some understanding of World War II will intensify the various scenes. I would recommend this movie to anyone with one caution; if you are ashamed of being seen with your eyes filled with tears watch it alone.

    One thing I hated was how Americanised it was.
    She says "soccer ball", yet the German word Fussball directly translates to Football.
    Also the film says near the end "1945 - US troops occupy Germany". Oh, the Americans did it themselves did they? No Russian, French or British troops involved?
    Then they fill an entire shot with an Apple logo right at the end. They didn't even try to make it subtle.

      If the film was apparently made for US eyes only (who appear to be so uncultured they have to have a specially edited version of history to cater for their nationalism). then why do they bother to release it in Europe? you know that continent with over 700 million people.
      And the only reason people like us 'obsess' over US media is because they have some perverse agenda of constantly insulting European culture and history.

    What bothers me is that in the book, the fact that Liesel has brown eyes is important and here they just don't give a duck and hire a blue eyed actress. Also, it's nowhere nearly as good as the book because the narration is what makes this book a masterpiece and it can't be captured on screen.

      Couldn't agree more! I do think she is a good actress. However, it makes me really mad that Markus didn't object to this even though I know he probably did not have a say in the matter. Geoffrey Rush, I must admit was very very good in the film!

    I just watched the movie and it ripped my heart out and smashed it into millions of little pieces especially in the end.
    I have to say my favorite character was Rudy and her father.
    Her father was always so nice to her I mean from day one he was like a best friend to her and Rudy well I mean their relationship caught me ever since he saw her for the first time I knew he was going to be a big part so I learned to love him and I learned that really quickly and I always love me some romance in movies and books ;) but the fact that she never kissed him while he was alive and that he never told her how he felt made me loose it and cry till I couldn't cry anymore

    Hmmm after I read the book I gotta say: there is no comparisson... The movie is good but the book captivates you during the second half (the first bored me a bit). My favorite character is Rosa, I cried when I read every line about her at the end, she was first a meh character to me but then I started loving her, then my second fav. character is Rudy, which to me shows the mind of a kid, how tender it is... Stories that involve kids in this kind of stories always make me feel sad and happy at the same time :/. Then Ilsa, full of mistery and attractive but such a sad story behind her, and at the end the father, Liesel and Max I always kept them like in the same line, not to attractive but sometimes they had their moments xD... I don't say the movie is bad, but if you have the oportunity to read the book, do it.

      +JLH CREATIONS idk about the movie but the book was heavily centered around how it was to grow up under the nazi regime. A huge part of it stemmed from the warring state of the country. Also death, as the narrator, would frequently interject and go places outside of liesel's immediate town, to events in WWII. In my opinion, that makes it a WWII movie

It was such an emotional journey, and I felt like I was living through everything with Liesel. She's such an amazing character, and her story touched me deeply. I was heartbroken when Rudy died, and losing Papa and Mama was devastating too. Max was such a strong and inspiring character. "The Book Thief" is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read, and I can't wait to see how the movie brings it to life.

  • @MidnightOpal
    @MidnightOpal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    The Book Thief is a riveting, raw novel about the reign of Nazi Germany through Death's eyes. The producers clearly took that topic and romanticized it and changed the true meaning, not understanding the sole purpose of the novel.

      @MidnightOpal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Murrummba I never said what the movie needed was more narration, so don't jump to conclusions and put words in my mouth. I find that incredibly offensive. I specifically stated that the reason why the movie was so inaccurate was credited to a number of things, not just the lackluster narration. My problem with the narration, in case you were wondering, is not that there wasn't enough but that the portions they did include did not capture the essence of death as written by Zuzak.

    • @MidnightOpal
      @MidnightOpal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Murrummba Again, read my previous comment. When will you understand the fact that I do not and never have wanted more narration? I merely would like a change in the same quantity of narration. Is my point finally clear?

    Oh my God, I'm crying... So I once saw this book in a library and thought to myself that It's probably a boring book without even reading the summary on the back. Now this evening the movie played on a TV channel from my country and I thought ,,Oh, this is familiar... isn't it a screening of the book?" and I decided to watch it. I was so fascinated by the story that I did not let any second of it waste and honestly watching it all was all worth it. I'm so shook right now that I can't really think of what to say,other than that it brought me to tears. I can't believe how different the past was putting it next to our present! After watching it I was left with no word, just the tears going down my face. So this is a tip for you all: *Never judge a book by its cover*. ❤

    I think this is saddest book I've ever read! The movie is good, they didn't add some lovely scenes, but the movie is a great adaptation.

    I just came from seeing this movie, and I cried cried cried, I can´t describe with words what this made me feel, it was extraordinary, so touching to me, I was raised by my grandparents and my grandpa had a lot of things in common with Geoffrey Rush´s character, he was the one who taught me how to read, that joined me in my moments of "adventure" while playing with me, that inspired my love of books, it moved so many memories of my childhood, and also gives you an image of what that horrible war did for both sides, germans and jews.

    Finished the book yesterday, couldn't stop crying.
    This trailer looks extremely different from what I imagined while reading the book. The characters look too clean and well-fed. Is the movie worth watching or does it ruin the story?

    I have a five year old daughter. Sometimes, I enjoy thinking of the movies I would like to watch with her someday when she is older. This is one of them. But then I have to stop and think about how I will explain why these things were happening, Hitler's Third Reich and the Holocaust. The hardest part of being a parent is realizing that someday you will have to talk to your children about heartbreaking things that have happened in the past because it's vital for the next generation to never forget and do better.

    This film is literally one of the best ones I've seen. I loved every bit of it, the story, the plot and the cast is amazing! (Especially the little girl who played Liesel) not gonna lie, there are certain scenes where my eyes were proper teary :'( I just don't get why some people always have negative things to say. When I first watched the trailer I found the story interesting so I watched it and i ended up being drawn to it :)
