@@clare3155 it was an incredibly sad time, however there is no such case of nuns murdering babies in a septic tank… I think you’re confusing two facts. The mother and baby home in Tuam ran a magdalene laundry in the poorest years of the Irish free state; literally just after a civil war. Babies would have sadly passed away in there after birth and later as a result of poverty: not enough food, warmth, sanitation, etc. And also because these homes were not sufficiently staffed. Catholics in Ireland had just received emancipation and liberation to practice freely again in over 300 years. There was not enough nun’s to staff them adequately. And in any case, poverty such as this existed before the mother and baby homes existed. But in this context and time in history, the unfortunate but real logic that existed was that if a woman was with child and had no man standing forward to protect them, sometimes a poorer family would cast this woman aside. The option for them in this dire situation was either to go or be sent to a Magdalene laundry and work her way out. It was that or become a vagrant, or die on the side of the road. The second fact is that the sewage system in the area of Tuam was updated in the 80’s or 90’s and went ahead without archeological planning. So the council essentially desecrated the graves (and there were graves, my mother grew up in the estate the little burial site was in, she used to play near the graves) and continued with the sewage system upgrade. Years later this was all thrown together by the media, they tried to insinuate that nuns from the 30’s up to the 70’s were throwing murdered babies into a septic tank from the 80’s/90’s, that didn’t even exist yet. So you see, it was a terribly hard time in Irish history. A new born country was trying its best to rebuild a nation from the rubble of 800 years of subjugation. Both of my grandmothers were children of the laundries. They were not fun, but my grandmother that’s alive will tell you that this story has been blown out of proportion to monumental heights. A lot of the nuns were actually quite good, and more were nice. But there’s always one that is nasty and will stick in your mind forever. And as for the countrywide institution of these homes, they were run in the same buildings as the British colonial workhouses where people and babies nearly certainly were murdered. This movie is based on a fictional novel anyways.

It's not an easy watch as it does not hold back in it's portrayal of the abuse that went on in those horrible places, but as you said, it's important that people learn about what was done to the poor girls who were sent there.
@@kirstyfairly4371 Sadly it did hold back if you ask the four survivors whose stories were partially told in it. They all said the film glossed over some of the worst abuses - rape, abject physical violence at the hands of both the nuns and the disgusting priests.
More than 11,000 women and girls were held in 10 Magdalene laundries operated by four female religious congregations from 1922 until the closure of Dublin’s Seán McDermott Street laundry in 1996. The remains of an additional 22 women were discovered when 133 bodies were being removed from a Magdalene Laundry graveyard in north Dublin in 1993. It is estimated that 35,000 women were forced into these institutions and 6,000 babies died in their care, with the babies' ages ranging from 35 fetal weeks to two to three years old. July 2013 - The four orders of nuns that ran the notorious Magdalene Laundries in Ireland have said they have NO INTENTION of contributing anything towards the compensation fund set up by the Irish Government. As of March 2022, nuns who ran Magdalene laundries have NOT contributed to redress for women. Some €32m in awards of €11,000-€100,000 made to more than 800 survivors to date.
Wow, these are where true actors really earn their accolades and praise. How an actor like Cillian go play a role like this without being personally traumatized is the sign of a true professional. Just watching the trailer is moving enough, I can't imagine acting in these scenes, definitely will be eying another Oscar with this movie and this role for him.
I loved the book!! And I feel like because it was so short, it offers the perfect amount of material to turn into a movie; this trailer alone looks phenomenal, as haunting and quietly profound as the book! I’m so excited to see if something more is added to the story (specifically to the ending, that left me wondering so many things).
@@ayan6431 it's an historical fiction, very subtle and focused on the moral, guilt and sense of community of the characters and how they react to the real life injustice that were the Magdalene Laundrie in Ireland.
"If you want to get on life, there are things that you have to ignore." And right after that dialogue, the name of the movie appears: SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE. Now, this is what we call a trailer! Spectacular!
Theyre finally making a movie about this topic! I'm so excited because people NEED to know about the horrible things that happened to unmarried pregnant women and their children in Ireland. I remember watching a documentary about the children (now elderly) who survived the horrible conditions of the orphanages and the greed priests and nuns used before and after the surviving children were adopted. It's surprising how many people don't know about this every having happened in Ireland.
I saw the movie in the movie theater today. In some ways, the movie was disappointing as it moves much too slow, and at times it is hard to figure out what the movie is about. I was hoping that the movie would focus on the nuns and the place where the nuns kept these unfortunate girls. But the movie seems to want to focus on the central character and his many moods.

Such an important story to be told. This is a powerful clip. It is interesting how the Nun repeats "The Lord is compassion and love" as Cillian Murphy is aggressively scrubbing the fifth from his hands. It seems to be a metaphor for how the church hypocritically "cleanses" the sinners under the guise of the Lord's love and compassion. I can't wait to see this movie.

Irish cinema’s really making an impact recently. I wasn’t even aware it was a genre until I saw Kneecap at a mystery screening at my AMC awhile back but I was enthralled. Now they’re bringing out the big guns with Cillian with his actual accent. Can’t wait. 🎉
Cillian has an amazing American accent. Remember hearing an American talk show host comment he didn’t know Cillian was Irish (pre-Oppenheimer). Looking forward to hearing Cillian just speaking with his Irish enunciation. Especially love the “th” sounds.
Compelling performances throughout, Cillian M. Is exceptional in his quietness & this is a measured & considered role very few actors could create. There is such care & attention to detail in every scene, capturing the era, the look, the mood & tone the director wants to convey, the colours are muted & understated for the most part. I feel this captures very well the writing style & exquisite rendering of this story. A must watch.
Getting into these kinds of wounds ain’t easy. This mentality of writing women and children off that don’t fit into societal moulds still exists today. The distortion manifests itself differently and it’s not just an Irish problem. Looking forward to this film very much and glad Cillian is always rooted in home
Saw it today and it is an amazing movie. Cillian Murphy’s performance is outstanding. There’s not much dialogues but You can feel every emotion. I can’t recommend it enough.
That's one way to look at it. But I thought the film was rather slow moving and I wanted to know more about the background of the nuns who would betray their faith to run such a shady operation.
@@Jack-ke5uv Not film for mainstream audience. It would require certain type of audience. As in people who enjoy more dense stuff and complexity. People who have read the book, will be able to understand the movie better. It's actually about his own life being tied into the magdalene laundry. That's why they focus on Cillian's character. Cause the story is seen through his eyes, via his perspective. It's not trying to copy any other movie involving this topic. It's another take on it.

Such an outstanding film. If you are a female of Irish descent, you should really see this movie. Personally, I thank God and my ancestors for leaving Ireland in the 1800’s because if I grew up there, I could easily have been one of those girls. Even now, in pockets of Ireland it is still that poor and mundane. Breaks my heart that this is how they ‘managed’ the problems of teenage girls. Living in Ireland today, in these small towns, still feels like stepping back in time. I love living in Ireland for that very reason. It is a simpler way of life.
Peaky Blinders, Oppenheimer, and all the rest are great films and TV, but this may be his most important piece of work to date!! This isn't 100 years ago at that birth of the state, it's within my lifetime and my kids. 1996 was the last closure.
Small Things Like These is a brilliant novel, and it's pretty short, so I think it's an excellent choice for a film adaptation. Also, Cillian looks exactly how I pictured Furlong, like even the clothes are the exact same lol
Artists Equity. That's what to look for. Damon and Affleck devised a way to do what they want and how they want without going broke. I'm treating them like the 'next' A24. The message in the Jordan shoe flick "Air" is so smart, subversive, true, and revealing that I'm still amazed it got made. (It's also great and funny as hell.) Just wanted to add that. Everyone knows Cillian is great, but w/ AE behind it... I think there's a real good possibility this might have something to say and not pull punches. Keep killing it fellas.

This film will open old wounds. It is long overdue.

He's a great actor cause I can definitely 100% unsee Tommy Shelby in him.
Wow, these are where true actors really earn their accolades and praise. How an actor like Cillian go play a role like this without being personally traumatized is the sign of a true professional. Just watching the trailer is moving enough, I can't imagine acting in these scenes, definitely will be eying another Oscar with this movie and this role for him.
from introducing cilian murphy to Academy Award Winner Cilian Murphy 🔥🔥🔥
I loved the book!! And I feel like because it was so short, it offers the perfect amount of material to turn into a movie; this trailer alone looks phenomenal, as haunting and quietly profound as the book!
I’m so excited to see if something more is added to the story (specifically to the ending, that left me wondering so many things).
Tell me the genre plz since u have read the book
I recommend you read 'Scenes of a Graphic Nature' by Caroline O'Donoghue, it's brilliant
There’s an excellent movie on this topic, made in 2002, called The Magdalene Sisters. It’s a brutal, heartbreaking watch, but absolutely vital.
I saw the movie in the movie theater today. In some ways, the movie was disappointing as it moves much too slow, and at times it is hard to figure out what the movie is about. I was hoping that the movie would focus on the nuns and the place where the nuns kept these unfortunate girls. But the movie seems to want to focus on the central character and his many moods.
i cannot put into words how much i adore Claire Keegan and her work.
Cillian Murphy? the man lives in my heart. can’t wait to watch this, and hoping for more future adaptations of Claire’s writing, particularly Foster ❤
There is an adaptation of Foster! It’s called The Quiet Girl. It’s really good. I love her books too.
@@virginiamitchell4941 you've just made my day. thank you
Cillian Murphy is in it, ergo I'm watching it!
Not just because of the Oscar and Oppenheimer, but because I've been a fan of his since 28 Days Later snd the man always delivers
Yep! Same here
Finally, Daniel Day Lewis has a peer....Cillian Murphy
💯
Such an important story to be told. This is a powerful clip. It is interesting how the Nun repeats "The Lord is compassion and love" as Cillian Murphy is aggressively scrubbing the fifth from his hands. It seems to be a metaphor for how the church hypocritically "cleanses" the sinners under the guise of the Lord's love and compassion. I can't wait to see this movie.
I absolutely fell in love with this book, I highly recommend the short novels from Author Claire Keegan. Her books make my heart soar.
Now that's how you make a trailer
Absolutely love, how he mentions this to be one of his favorite books. And now gets to produce and act out its movie.
2024 got so much better, seeing Cillian Murphy back on screen.
Yes, he is back on the screen, not the little Netflix screen, but the motion picture screen!
I'm a simple woman, all I need to see is Cillian Murphy, and I'll watch
same here
I will tell you one thing, this man is going to make a legacy. He's just started... Something really big in respect of his characteristics.
'academy award winner' reads so beautifully
I already see an Oscar winning here.
I love Claire Keegan's writing!! This story was an instant favorite of mine, very excited for this
Give Cillian his second Oscar nowwwwww
I read the novel because Cillian Murphy said in an interview that he was making this film. What an affecting, heartbreaking, compassionate novel it is! I would recommend reading it before watching the movie. It's very short and so well written.
This looks so good and like it's really capturing Claire Keegan's book!
2nd Oscar for Cillian loading 🏆⏳
so we're basically seeing a back to back Oscar best actor win from Cillian?
I think Emily Watson is the one people are backing for an Oscar win in this, she is really highlighted
@Starburst514 yeah but there's still categories for men and women right?
@@arthur_168 yeah, yeah but I just mean that with the team behind small things like these there's been more of a Oscar push for Emily than there has been for Cillian (and with Cillian being a producer on this that might be his plan anyways) or that's the news I hear from Ireland at least
But I mean yeah you never know it would actually be pretty funny, if you was nominated and then won his second Oscar a second year in a row 😭 and like usually the previous winners introduce the nominees so he be introducing himself as a nominee and then just taking it 😂😂😂
@@Starburst514Nah, Cillian is the type of guy that's gonna push Emily for it than himself, since he's already won.
@@rehnumachowdhury3629 Yeah that's what I said
Big fan of Emily Watson because of Chernobyl, she is amazing in that show.
I'm excited to see Cillian Murphy again in 28 Years Later.
I know this is going to be a devastating film...but I really want to see it...the cast, acting, story...looks phenomenal
Looks very interesting.. and yea Cillian is about to kill this role.. I can't wait. Also can anybody tell me the name of this beautiful music at 0:44 ? Please
Please tell us the name
know the name?
This is gonna be great. Compelling true story and you can't beat the cast. I absolutely love the visuals so far.
Insert Martin Scorsese quote "This is Cinema"
Feels right to read Academy Award winner next to Cillian !!
Cillian Murphy's resurgence is going strong, his act speaks volumes for it if not himself. Hope he continues it into *_28 Years Later!_* 9:47am 18.9.2024
What cillian murphy said by words in the whole trailer, "Come on, Finish up your toast before it gets cold", "Dont you ever question it?"
We love you Cillian - Always Cillian Murphy ig ❤
This is why Cillian will go down as one of the greatest Actors of all time. He barely spoke yet his eyes speak volumes.
Can’t wait to see the film. But it’s looking like an Oscar nomination for sure.
Emily Watson is back!!!
Her part was too small. Cillian Murphy hogged all the screen time.
Irish cinema’s really making an impact recently. I wasn’t even aware it was a genre until I saw Kneecap at a mystery screening at my AMC awhile back but I was enthralled. Now they’re bringing out the big guns with Cillian with his actual accent. Can’t wait. 🎉
I just want Cillian back in Tron 3 bro.
I’m glad he’s coming back as Jim for "28 Years Later." My favourite film of all time is "28 Days Later"
I wanted all of the cast from Legacy in Tron 3. We aren’t getting that though.

Cillian has an amazing American accent. Remember hearing an American talk show host comment he didn’t know Cillian was Irish (pre-Oppenheimer). Looking forward to hearing Cillian just speaking with his Irish enunciation. Especially love the “th” sounds.
Academy award winner Cillian Murphy, shii that title suits him so well🤩
Compelling performances throughout, Cillian M.
Cillian is one of my favourites and I adore also Emily Watson
Emily Watson's part should have been bigger. She is given too little screen time while Cillian Murphy is on camera almost the entire film.
i’ve been a cillian murphy fan from wayyyyyy before oppenheimer when he was far lesser well known by the world - it’s sooo nice to see him finally get the recognition he deserves and work w big names like affleck and damon
Я читала книгу, по которой снят фильм. Текст и сюжет не плохой и атмосфера довольно тревожная. Цветовая палитра фильма приятная. Буду смотреть.
I just want to say that Cillian Murphy should make movies more and more. Ive watched every movie that he is in
Cillian Murphy❤❤
Just finished the book in one sitting. Didn’t even know a movie was being released in 3 weeks. This looks incredible.
OMG WE ARE DEFINITELY MOVING ENTERTAINMENT FORWARD I LOVE THIS CILLIAN JUST WOW IM CRYING INSIDE SO MUCH 🎉❤
Such an outstanding film.
Sinead O'Connor was so, so right about the church and the evil done.
It's amazing how people now realize how amazing of an actor Cillian Murphy is.
Academy 👏🏻 Award 👏🏻 Winner 👏🏻 Cillian 👏🏻 Murphy 👏🏻
As a father of two beautiful daughters I may end up crying after watching this😢.
GOD I'M SO EXCITED
Peaky Blinders, Oppenheimer, and all the rest are great films and TV, but this may be his most important piece of work to date!! This isn't 100 years ago at that birth of the state, it's within my lifetime and my kids. 1996 was the last closure.
Im looking to this film and the brutalist because Murphy and guy Pearce are great actors to watch
Powerful indeed!! So little detail in the trailer but yet so compelling!! 10/10.
Small Things Like These is a brilliant novel, and it's pretty short, so I think it's an excellent choice for a film adaptation.
Also, Cillian looks exactly how I pictured Furlong, like even the clothes are the exact same lol
If you can communicate with expressions and body language then there's no need to speak.
Cillian is exceptional 👌🏿
His eye acting alone in the scene with the daughter being sent away is oscar worthy alone.
i am so seated
The novel saved me from a reading slump last year. One of the best books I have read. I hope the movie is as good and impactful.
We will be there
Artists Equity. That's what to look for. Damon and Affleck devised a way to do what they want and how they want without going broke. I'm treating them like the 'next' A24. The message in the Jordan shoe flick "Air" is so smart, subversive, true, and revealing that I'm still amazed it got made. (It's also great and funny as hell.)
Just wanted to add that. Everyone knows Cillian is great, but w/ AE behind it... I think there's a real good possibility this might have something to say and not pull punches. Keep killing it fellas.
Why does this look good 😢❤
Cillian Murphy got me here without a doubt.
