I'm so glad they are shining further light on the horrific actions on the Catholic church in Ireland. For anyone who doesn't know the context, there were many Church run institutions throughout Ireland where unmarried women were sent to have their babies if they became pregnant. The women were forced to give up their babies and suffered terrible abuse. If they were lucky, the babies were adopted but many grew up in other church run institutions where they suffered every kind of abuse at the hands of the priests and nuns. Unfortunately some didn't have any chance at all, in 2012 when researching the possibility that up to 1000 babies had been adopted to the US illegally they made the horrific discovery that only 36 babies had been illegally adopted, and up to 800 babies had been buried in unmarked graves on the site. The church and government have so much to answer for.
It really is sad theirs so much corruption and dark history in the church that isn't addressed due to fear and stigmas. Rape, lies, abuse, malnutrition, and lack of education all happen in those communities

It was the same in Spain, France and Italy. The Catholic Church should be banned. Still I don’t understand why it isn’t,.

Everyone's going on about Cillian Murphy but Emily Watson deserves recognition here. She's an awesome actress and I'll never forget her as the blind girlfriend in The Red Dragon and various other roles. She always wins awards but she deserves an Oscar, hopefully this is her moment too.
Seems like it's taking on the same things as The Woman in the Wall (Paramount +) series. Not 100% sure, but from what I could gather from the bits in the trailer. Great series if anyone cares to watch it.
I was thinking the same. I think this is going to be about the same subject matter but from his perspective. It's going to be depressing and make us cry if it's anything like The Woman in the Wall which managed to add comedy into it... I don't think this movie is going to do that it will be more affective. (IMO)
They definitely didn't need the music to go that hard for a trailer, it sounds incredible. Does anyone know if it's an original composition for the film or a separate piece?
Yes, the music was glorious and sometimes the use of it can be misleading (or maybe "leading", in telegraphing emotions a film has not earned). To me, this does look like a film worthy of it. The strings remind me of some of the work by James Newton Howard. Not him, though.

Look into an early 2000's Irish film called The Magdalene Sisters. Or read about the Magdalene Sisters online. Basically young women moved to live in convents, largely against their will, particularly after the birth of a child out of wedlock or other similar acts considered shameful by the church. They were separated from their children and in many or most cases never saw them again. Look into the film Philomena also with Judi Dench, a true story about a woman who lived there and lost her son.
Philomena with Judi Dench is another great movie on this subject. With Steve Coogan so played more as a comedy-drama, but very effective and emotional as well.
affleck and damon are signaling there at there end of acting days in hollywood w/this one......goin down a foxhole they prolly shldnt, but very brave! this makes 'spotlight' lookly like disney park!
i'm telling you... Catholicism is a perfect example of putting works over (hope, compassion, love & faith) this where they go so wrong, they believe there doing the Lord's work...madness... this is coming from a non denominational Christian
It has never been my experience with the catholic faith, and I'm the first to call out institutions on their bullshit. Any corruption or evil in the church is brought about by human beings, not the faith, or the religion. And it exists in all religious institutions. It just seems to be in vogue to scrutinize catholocism at the moment.
Unfortunately this was a pan-Christian problem in Ireland. The Protestant Church of Ireland and the Presbyterians also ran Magdalene Laundries. I think the real problem with the Laundries has less to do with religion and more to do with when we start viewing people as "problems" to be taken care of rather than individuals we are called to love as Christ commanded us. This is especially true when the Laundries got more and more tied up with the state apparatus rather than being an authentic work of charity.
I honestly wrote this out of love, cause its important to love one another as Christ did and does, and loving one another is also telling the truth. I believe in the Word of God, when you start to participate in traditions and expectations for one another you choke the life out of the patience Paul speaks about in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, "love is patient, love is kind..." we just got to get back to the bible and putting God first.
Contraceptives, abortion all these are methods that nowadays are of normal use in the modern societies because women have struggled snd suffered for centuries to be respected and heard . This novel and movie is one example of all the barriers the not so far generations have lived and the moral barriers that have been knocked down. And one example that there were and there is reasonable sensitive people willing to help and be caring
Not another Irish movie based on Misery lit. Grey skies, rain, the church and depression. Maybe it's time for a positive movie about Irelands past, surely there were some happy people, right?
Imagine if the followers of the church dared to hold it accountable. Imagine if the pews were empty and so was the collection plate every Sunday, the church would make amends damn quick.
This effects of the Magdelene Laundries and the catholic church's backward-power are still felt in Irish society today, whether we are aware of it or not. Cruel beings.
Every nation put its own twist on Catholicism, and the teachings of Jesus. The Irish put the darkest twist of all. I'm sick of seeing and hearing about it. Thank god its negative impacts will fade away in a few generations. Good cast and cinematography, to be sure, but I'll pass on this one.
