    Released a healthy kitty
    (mostly)
    I wanted to wait until we moved into our new house to start trapping cats but apparently I can't help myself. We found a feral boy with some really bad teeth who also needed to be fixed, so I guess this makes TNR #1 for us! Super huge thanks to Rana and the local TNR org for helping out and offering advice and assistance. After we move we plan on getting into TNR and fostering a lot more (and we can have as many cats as we want!)
    TNR = trap, neuter, return

    • @yummypasta92
      @yummypasta92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Feral cats can't be adopted but strays who are used to being around humans can and should be adopted. The survival rate for outdoor cats is very low because infection and accident rates are high and they are much less likely to be taken care of when there is a serious problem. Especially when they are young many don't even survive cold winter. My grandmother has seen many dead kittens around her home in winter. They should all be neutered, but I don't think we should be quick to say that they are happier outdoors. The local volunteers were upset that they were being fed because "that's the least they could do" but can't be bothered to take them to the vets or adopt them. It is actually easy for cats to find food even without people specifically feeding them, and what they actually need is a good home that takes care of them, a lot of cats enjoy affection too. The idea that "they are happy being strays, I just feed them" is mostly a misconception and often just used to feel better about the cats situations. (Maybe it is cultural but in Japan everyone buys pedigree kittens from pet shops and rarely adopt cats who need homes.)

So I took her to the vet and got her spayed, vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas. She was tested for FIV and came back negative. I adopted her after that and now she lives in my house. Her name is Possum. She is very affectionate now. If they ever need to catch him again in the future though, it's either going to be even easier because he knows they just want to help when he really needs it...OR [most likely] it'll be even more difficult, more like with Pichi[ or worse], because he'll be wise to it and more resistant after having gone through it before.😅😅 ((Hopefully they won't need to catch him again. ^-^))
      ......he actually didn't seem that incredibly feral to me though; but maybe we just didn't get to see footage of his most feral moments here, so it's hard to say without having been there. 🤔 🤷‍♀️ Lol

    One of my cats a semi-feral. She was almost killed by my ex-neighbor( he would drown them. She wasn't the most loving of cats, but she loved the dog we had at the time. They were the best of friends. For 12 years they were the best buds. She live for a few years more outside cat and all. The last year of her life she came back to sleep and go out in the morning. She passed away in the house. Buried her in the yard under a cement art peice I made. The few times she trusted me to let me pet her were great. We would sit on my stairs and hang out for a bit. She would get petted and I'd get drooled on. Good times. Well I'm now up to 9 cats. Found the 9th one a month or so ago. That thing is usually glued to my butt, much to my other butt baby cat annoyance. Getting the 9th spayed next month sometime.

Within 3 months, he was being held and kissing his caregiver’s face. Since then, I have tried to keep trapped cats in a large cage a little longer to observe them. Give them time to decompress. See if there is a pet cat there from long ago. Thanks for helping that little boy. ❤️

      @jaginaiaelectrizs6341 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Even if they were born feral... if you have enough time to invest in it, and if you have somewhere for them to go permanently afterward, more of them than it might initially seem are probably actually capable of being tamed - because hissing and clawing is not always a sign of aggression but is more defensive & fear-based instead, and once they learn they don't need to fear..they settle down. These are all Domestic Cats, after all, not true Wild Cats. (It also depends sometimes on what kind of history they have with interacting with humans in their past, even if they were never a pet, have they ever been directly terrorized or harmed[ whether intentionally or accidentally] by a human?[ And what is the cat's individual personality / how exactly do they personally respond to which kinds of things?] There are so many different possible factors, which we just don't usually have any way of knowing for sure. Every cat is different, just like every human-person is. 🙂) But, unfortunately, people don't always have or choose to invest the prolonged time-they worry more about just getting things done as quickly as possible; which is better than nothing, but still less than what would be a perfect ideal. (And if you don't have a for-sure place for them to go, it can reduce their feral survival instincts to tame them even if they could have been tamed, so it's sometimes just better not to tame them so they can stay in familiar surroundings without damaging their chances for continued survival rather than sitting in potentially traumatizing unfamiliar shelter situations hoping to be adopted for an indefinite period of time.)
      Maybe one day we will have more people like you, who are able to try and invest that extra bit of time. (And more people willing to provide homes for cats, in general.) 🙂

      Ikr I always tell people there would be way less sick pets given up to shelters if the vet bills were not thousands of dollars but no one believes me! Way less animals would be euthanized prematurely if vet bills weren't so goddamned high! People do love their animals but they only have so much they can afford. I'm so sick of the "Well if you can't afford to care for them don't have them!" only to turn around and whine about how many animals are in shelters because people can't afford a $2000 vet bill. US veterinary work is a scam.

    • @RachelandJunAdventures

      He doesn't! There are a lot of people who leave out food for community cats. He shouldn't have to catch much prey himself. One of the things TNR groups try to do is make sure that there's someone in the neighborhood keeping an eye out on/feeding the cats that are released. We know there are several people in the area where Pumpkin was released that feed the community cats.
