    Thanks to Skillshare for sponsoring our video and helping us move one step closer to our cat house!! We have a ton of ideas for how we want to design it but we'd also like your feedback and suggestions for how we can make it better! We of course also have the foster room we mentioned in a previous video, and we'll be taking all our current cat things with us!

      My next neighbour had four cats; three have since died of old age and I still particularly miss Molly who was unbelievably affectionate and let me rub her belly and chin as well as pick her up and she would cover me with forever-moulting white fur. I don’t want to sound depressing, but perhaps you should plan for when your cats are elderly. Our eldest is 17 and while still active her legs are stiff. We restrict her to rooms where she cannot misjudge her abilities and fall (she still thinks she can walk the edge of the balcony). In her area cat designated vertical spaces are closer together with bigger landing platforms, all much lower to the ground. She slips on smooth surfaces so all landing spaces are carpetted or have a nonslip mat. The litter box is easy access with a low entry (or a ramp). Lots of sunny areas in her space and plug in heated mats. This was all put together slowly in response to slips, falls, and too fast descents. I don’t think this should affect your overall design, but perhaps you could think about how these could be implemented if needed one day and where.

    • @lisahenry20
      @lisahenry20 3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      That may depend on the cat. My grandparents cat got to 20 and she was pretty frail by the end. My grandparents didn't need to block anything off because the highest place she went was on chairs or the windowsill.
      Rachel and Jun will probably just have to keep an eye on the cats when they are older and see if they are the type to try get somewhere they probably shouldn't.

    • @yoly_sky
      @yoly_sky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I was going to say this too. That pole to get to the top will be hell for an elderly cat. I understand that the point of it is to give them some exercise but imagine Haku age 16 wanting to go up and sun himself on the top floor... I suggest a spiral, carpeted, ramp that wraps around a pole, the climb itself would be lots of exercise for an elderly cat.

    • @ILuvAyeAye
      @ILuvAyeAye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@yoly_sky I'm sure they'll be able to DIY something like that when the cats get older, or even contact the builder, and have them install shelves on the pole. Keeping the cats active now is the best way to ensure their health in the future.
      Also, the way they keep acquiring cats, they might eventually need a house that can simultaneously accommodate elderly cats, and tire out a whippersnapper - otherwise the young cats will drive the old cats crazy!

    • @izuela7677
      @izuela7677 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      They just need to make sure the high shelves are accessible from the second floor. So the cats will be able to just use human stairs to get down and up, if they like. And yes, no slip covering is essential. Even while they are young.

    Cat shelving and other pet-friendly furniture must be a big enough business in Japan to warrant whole brochures on them (I work on catalogues so I'm professionally interested in them). Maybe you already have thought of it, but “safety-vise” I think that the ability for the cat grab on to something, like if the shelf are covered with a rug type of material, would be something to consider. Cat obviously use their claws when their slipping, so even with railing on the shelf’s they could slip if their clumsy enough, like my cat 😹 I don’t know how you would clean these areas, but maybe worth thinking about. 😸

      People said that about our fake plants two years ago but we've barely had to touch them! I also don't think too much dust accumulates in the spots where cats walk around and lay down. I'm pretty sure most of what I'll need to clean will be their paw prints/fur and whatnot. Either way we'll be getting a ladder to take care of the light fixture in the fukinuke anyway, and I enjoy heights and the view will be great so I'll be happy to take on that duty!

      @@RachelandJunAdventures Maybe add a human sized resting spot up there as well? For example, in one corner have a triangle shaped landing inserted in between pieces of cat shelving. (Hope I described that well enough)
      It'll help make it easier to clean and you'll be able to enjoy the view a bit more with a sturdier piece to lean against.

    Rachel mentioned at the end that you guys want to put curtains inside your windows, an alternative I can really recommend are blinds that go down on the outside. In Germany they are really common, they protect the windows and can block out light really well. Some are manual and some are automatic. I personally find them really useful. You could try looking into it ☺️

    I would recommend using plants or fake plants for the catwalk in the kitchen. Using nets is also an option, but cats tend to lean into them quite heavily, making them loose and sometimes getting stuck. Maybe you can try to put up a net and fake plants. The net is installed in the wall above and beneath the walkway, or with nails. The plants could be woven into the net, making it both pretty and green and a nice little secret hideout.
    (With hooks you can change the netting if it becomes dirty or damaged. )

    Do you guys have a plan for when one of the cats inevitably needs medication that they hate, and decides to go sit in the hardest to reach part of the cat walk in the open lounge area? (Or worse, hacks up a furball up there.) Maybe you could have a fold-up ladder that reaches up there? Or one that goes along a runner like in those old libraries, so when the cats are running away you can just scoot along behind them.
    I know nothing about catscaping a home, but I do know that whenever my cat needed medication back in the day, the fluffy little shit always found the most difficult to reach spot in the house, and it was single level with no feline skywalks.

    I saw one house that had cat runs up high that were glassed in except for where the cat stairs and poles were. The real interesting part was the portals to outside that were caged in with chicken wire and ran up/down and along the upper part of the windows. This gave the cats the ability to go out side, run around safely, not wander off, and come back in when they wanted to. It was great watching them run across the top part of the windows on the outside! Just a thought...Oh, I almost forgot, they later added a model train that they could ride around on in on a lower level of the living room! That was crazy fun - they really enjoyed riding on the train!
