Little known fact: Karl has a confirmed kill at 147 meters with his issue sidearm. Dude doesn’t even need a rifle. The louder cartridges just help him sleep better at night
This is a really interesting video. I didn't expect that result. I keep a pistol w/weapon light close enough that I can be in action within 2-3 seconds after waking up, as long as I'm awake enough to fight. That's for if the bad guy is already on top of me, or damn near. If I have an extra 5 seconds, and they're not in the room yet, I'm going for my shotgun or rifle. Either one will end a fight more reliably than a pistol.
There's 2 problems with the 55gr FMJ's. They regularly do great in gel tests but, depending on where you hit a bad guy, they can also 'ice pick' through. Their terminal effect on tissue is entirely dependent on velocity(which is effected by both barrel length and distance), twist rate and even the angle they hit flesh. Yaw and tumble or straight through aren't an issue in combat, but for self/home defense soft points are a better choice. The second issue is that barriers like drywall might as well be tissue paper for any FMJ. Again, this can be addressed with soft point ammo. Two I've tested with good characteristics, Winchester ranger 55gr and Winchester Powerpoint 64gr, reliably obtain sufficient penetration on gel/tissue while also breaking up into lower energy fragments after striking drywall. The 40gr Hornaday and Fiocchi VMax loads also break up through drywall but lack decent penetration in soft tissue. As to why I carry a pistol, to paraphrase the late Paul Gomez, last time I walked into the bank with an AR slung across my chest they got really nervous.
I've never seen any gel tests, in more than 30 years, that has differed from the results you have in this video. I would never choose M855 over M193, either.
I know what you're thinking, gents. "But Karl, in Call of Duty I could take a pistol and head shot people and win games" Gents, I get that, and the problem with that is, when you get 150 headshots, your gun turns gold, and that's just not good for combat.
Literally just the other day I was reading an article Greg Ellifritz shared about how if you get shot with a pistol, and you make it to the hospital while your heart is still beating, you're almost guaranteed to survive. People don't like being told handguns are shitty weapons, but it's the truth. The main difference is ergonomics relative to the individual shooter. Pistols are tools of convenience (the most useful tools are the ones you have on you). There is a commonly repeated adage of "Your pistol is only there to get you to your rifle" which is a bit of a misnomer. A pistol is with you all the time; a rifle is with you some of the time. And as for the idea that a pistol is somehow more maneuverable than a rifle... If you don't have the patience to learn how to properly maneuver a rifle, then I guarantee you will not be an effective pistol shot under duress. Anything you can mount from the shoulder is far easier to get fast, accurate hits with. I literally say this same thing since I am a defensive handgun instructor... The best pistol is the one you shoot the best. For most people, that is going to be 9mm. There are two things I tell novice shooters that they need to understand: The hidden advantage of 9mm is that you can train on it more than any other duty caliber. And if you are training correctly and competently with a pistol, it will directly translate to rifle skills. So train like a mofo on a pistol, but bring a rifle to a gunfight... if you can! (PS. Karl I would recommend some 5.56 ammo that Federal loads called T556TNB1. It's literally the SOST bullet optimized for shorter carbine or SBR length barrels. It's what I run in 5.56, highly recommend for duty/defense.)
Years ago I watched a presentation by an ER doctor and his experience was if you were shot by a pistol, they can probably save you, more or less. If you are shot by a rifle, probably not. The amount of damage done is exactly as shown in this video. Yes size matters but in this case velocity matters more.
Yup the velocity and the fact the 223/556 shape of the bullet makes it want to tumble once it penetrates flesh. That's why 9mm ball is crappy self defense ammo. It doesn't have the velocity, the size of the bullet doesn't dump like a 45, and the shape of the bullet just creates ice pick wounds and over penetrates.
And most of the people that ER doctor saw who had been shot with rifles probably weren't shot with 5.56 ball ammo. The damage done by a .30-06, .308 or .243 hunting rifle is going to be exponentially worse.
@@jeffreygunn3530 I would say that would have to be the case since so few people are shot with 5.56. He did specifically call out 5.56 as part of the lecture and noted how effective it is but I suspect in practical experience the likelihood of him having saved anyone from 5.56 is small.
@@jeffreygunn3530 I would say that once NATO and a large number of other countries adapted it as their primary infantry cartridge it lost its varmint classification rather quickly. That being said, I'd suggest that it is also made for shooting people. Just because a cartridge is developed originally for one purpose does not mean that purpose cannot change.
I carry a 45 but always have an AR pistol or Mini 14 in my vehicle and at the ready at home. Not only for the performance of the bullet but the speed, capacity and accuracy of the rifle, even when used by my wife or teenagers. Red dot, light and laser top it off to deal with any threat that may come our way. Great video.
Amazing video. Its wild how theres some people in the gun community that thinks their pistol caliber .40 S&W and .45 ACP is more powerful than a 5.56/.223.
@joesmith3661 That depends on the type of caliber but I have formula to help choose correct rounds. Requirements Chronograph to help measure muzzle velocity out of the specific weapon of choice. Balistics gel to capture the bullet for analysis. Micrometer to identify the size. Step1 Get muzzle energy which is the weight and muzzle velocity (use chronograph). Step 2 Identify the size of the bullet retrieve from ballistics gel. Example 9MM and .45 ACP has a muzzle energy of 400 - 750 joules. 9MM (.360) Diameter .45 ACP (.450) Diameter If 9MM is hollow point they normally expand to 1.7 (so .600) and .45 ACP is full metal jacket Lets say both are 600 joules but 9mm is hollow point .600 / .450 diameter x 600 joules is 800 /600 joules = 1.33X.
For civilians you will probably only ever have a pistol in a public environment. If you use a rifle you are probably going to prison. Yes i know you will be alive. But who wants to be a boy you for the next 20 years. Having said that. I've seen a lot of people shot with pistols. Some go to hospital and leave same day. Some stay in hospital and leave in a few days. Some stay in a bag. Everyone i have seen shot with a rifle or shotgun gets to stay in a bag unless it's a limb shot. Best advise i can tell you is don't get in a gun fight unless you have no other option. The consequences if you are not in a soldier in a war are not good. Even if criminally cleared you will spend a fortune defending your self. You may lose civilly especially if you are in a liberal city or state. The only time you will probably be ok is on defense of you life in your home. In public you better have no other option. Been there done that. Take for what is worth to you.
The fbi agents from the famous Dade shooting all agreed on one thing...that the mini 14 and its noise, muzzle blast, firepower, ect all had a negitive physiological effect on them. It affected them mentally and in turn physically... and as clint Smith said, "rifles are monsters inside the average self defense shooting distance, they eat shit up".... I love my pistols... but I have the choice, I'm grabbing the biggest gun that makes sense for the room I'm in....
Recently attended a very cool lecture on terminal ballistics in a medical trauma context. Was a good reminder that velocity matters much more than mass, ie KE = 1/2mv^2. Lead also shears itself apart on impact at roughly 3000fps and dumps all its energy on target...I wonder what has a muzzle velocity of about 3000fps? Oh yeah, 5.56x45mm.
Damn i was hoping you were gonna send one of those 5.56 Gold Dots into the block for comparison to the cheap 55 grain ball ammo in the difference that it makes.
Great stuff! We carry sidearms because they're portable, not because they're potent. If the fight comes to you, in your own home, then there's no reason not to fight back with the most effective weapons you have! For me that will be a carbine (Bren 805 or PWS Mk114 Mod1) loaded up with 77gr OTM.
You should train with them. I've been through one class with them and plan to do more. It isn't cheap, but im am convinced there is no better training available even above their price.
I’m always scratching my head when I see people running PCC’s and acting like they have something superior to a rifle because they can use the same ammo in their pistol. If you’re going to run a rifle make sure it shoots a rifle caliber !
good point, I’ve never understood that either, also to add to that, why would you carry something like an MP5 or UMP pcc for example when a 10.5-11.5 inch AR is far superior and roughly the same size
Pistol is last line defense. Once 5.56 is gone, then and only then do you go for the sidearm. Now, if you were in the Soviet military the sidearm was used to motivate troops during a full out charge (in the back of the head).
Karl, you are of course 100% correct. I still don't understand the PCC craze. When it's all said and done, it's still a pistol round being fired from a giant handgun. Thanks for honest content. 🇺🇲
Its much more effective than a handgun solely because it's much easier to get hits, but I'd much rather have a rifle caliber if I'm using a rifle sized weapon.
@@asdfghjk2933 well it isnt rifle sized thats the point. If your talking about 10.5 ars as a rifle then its not any more effective than a mp5 in terms of effect
Great info and comparison between pistol and rifle. A lot of people feel the pistol is best because of easy concealment which is fine and dandy, but when it comes down to brass taxes, the rifle wins hands down all the time with cavitation type wounding especially in close quarters. DOL.
This is why whenever you can you should choose a rifle to protect yourself. A rifle will always deliver more kinetic energy on target than a pistol. Use a pistol to fight your way to your rifle
My sons for some reason preferred FMJ's for their EDC weapons despite my objections... Until I showed them your video and reminded them that they're on the hook for that round that passed through. They just switched to JHP's (we had a great day at the range with their FMJ's). I guess listening to me all these years sounds like the adults from Charlie Brown so the same message in a different voice did the trick. Thanks

Well most places will not allow us to carry a rifle around, to the grocery store, movies, etc. We all agree most rifles are superior to a pistol, but much harder to conceal, so carry in da trunk, with pistol in the belt. :>)
A few key points here are, he was using standard military ammo, which as he stated is not intended to kill as much as it is to wound. For a standard law enforcement officer patrolling the streets, at least where I live, only top level hollow points are allowed on duty, more lethal, less penetration. Besides, as we all must know, shot placement is key, and pistols are great for building clearing. Now, don't get me wrong, all my respects to this gentleman, I really like his channel and the great info he puts out here. I would agree on the fact if you could only carry one firearm in a going into battle situation, rifle would more than likely be best, because that is what most others would probably carry and have a reach and power advantage over a person with a pistol. There is a reason, wars are fought with rifles and not with pistols alone. EDC: PISTOL Going into battle: Short barrel/bullpup rifle.

Realistically, this probably the use of each weapons types. Sniper Rifles -Long Range Shooting -Hunting Normally stays behind enemy lines to provide info and support fire and hunting big animals. Sadly, some snipers exceeding .308 are long, heavy and slow (which cant engage multiple targets) and will be outbeaten by short, light and fast guns (which can engage multiple targets). Shotguns -Self Defense (buckshot) -Hunting (slug) -Breaching (buckshot) -Anti Vehicle (slug) Good for defending against 1 or 2 targets or moving targets. Slug can take down some vehicle. However, its too risky at close range against ARs, SMGs or LMGs. Sub Machine Guns -Close Range Suppressing Fire Light weight and compact, its high rate of fire and controllability allows easy and fast movement and endgagements, . However, most cant penetrate body armor and has lesser effective range. Light Machine Guns -Medium Range Suppressing Fire Contrary to SMGs, they use rifle round, have longer barrels, are heavier and are mostly used stationary but they also are used for suppressing fire. Use them behind people using ARs and SMGs. Assault Rifles -Long Range Shooting -Hunting -Close Self Defense -Close Range Suppressing Fire -Medium Range Suppressing Fire Mostly has characteristics of Shotguns, Snipers, SMGs and LMGs and can penetrate Body Armor. Defensive Handguns -Concealed Carry -Close Range Self Defense -Close Range Combat -Fast Switch -Great Back Up Weapon -Great For Getting To Your Main Gun ARs and Hanguns are probably the most versatile weapons. I would say choose a pistol/hangun over shotguns for close range combat. However, I would be okay using Shotguns for close range self defense.
16-20" rifle = 1200-1350 ft lbs muzzle energy. 10.5"-14.5 "AR pistol/SBR = 900-1150 ft lbs energy. A 7.5" barreled pistol would produce roughly 700ft lbs, so nearly half as powerful as a 16"+. This is for full power 5.56 loads, so .223 will be roughly 100-200 ft lbs weaker for each barrel length. The bottom line is that AR pistol results will be relatively similar, especially if you're talking about a 11.5 or 12.5" barrel. A 10.5" and under barrel will be noticeably less damaging.
Karl, loved the video. I just received my Tactical Edge TR 1 and would like you advice on how to complete it. 1. What Optic do you use? 2. What light? 3. What sling? Thank you.
I get so sick of all the "but that gel isn't calibrated" hooey. "If Clear Ballistics had been around in the '70s, the FBI would have used it." PREACH, Karl!!!
@@DanTheWolfman I don't think Karl is wrong at all and, to be clear, you don't KNOW that he's wrong either. The various gels on the market are analogs use to compare one round to another. While one analog is not precisely the same as another, if you are using the same gel across your test and environmental conditions are consistent, the test is likely valid. Where we may disagree is whether the FBI would have used it. To that, I say maybe. There are so many other factors -- a fabric "clothing" barrier, ambient temperature, etc. which affect "calibration" of the gel and impact bullet and media performance.. long and short, who knows and who cares? Karl's comparison was valid, 9mm ball vs. HST vs. cheap off-brand 5.56 nato-ish. This was not a comparison of ballistic test media, he did not try to claim that this test could or should be compared to anything that has ever been done before by anyone. It was a simple and relatively inexpensive way to illustrate a point. Sorry if that was missed on you.
Wish carrying around an AR was more politically correct and accepted as normal! I'd carry one EVERYWHERE! People would be alot more polite!! Great video Karl, thanks again for the great content!!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
You should never make yourself known as the most dangerous man in the room. But I agree if I could carry my AR without being noticed I'm all in. But at this point I will just have to use my pistol to get to my rifle.
All those sexy jagged edges of the HST. If I carry a 9mm that's my round but as a backup the Chicago load ( fed. +9+ 115) ... Stay Strong and Be Safe !!!
I forgot who did the video but I saw one recently that interviewed several ammo manufactures who explained that until a round is moving above roughly 2000 FPS, the body's natural elasticity overcomes the kinetic energy. It only has the round diameter sized permanent wound cavity. Once a round is moving above 2k FPS, it tears the tissue up to 3 inches away from the wound track causing far more bleeding and tissue damage.
A lot of people don't understand that rifles are many times more powerful than handguns. If you looked at the blocks side by side after the test you can see how much more permanent damage was done by the rifle. Around 70% of people shot with handguns don't stay at the scene of the shooting but 97% of people shot with rifles and shotguns do. A large portion of people chose a handgun for defending there homes putting them at a much higher risk. Center-fire long guns are by far the best choice for stopping most people with just one shot, this way you can move on to the next person quickly.
I personally love all firearms each caliber is unique in its own way and have there own purpose and everybody has a personal preference personally what I keep close is a FMK 9mm ball ammo sometimes hollows but as he said are you trying to stop the threat without death or end a life that’s on you, Mossberg 500 with either bird shot or a slug and .556/.223 Diamondback AR 15 I’m definitely getting my 30-06 ,762 ,308, .45 and 10mm

In some places they don't
Your brand of no nonsense, practical, real world info is simply the trutj uncle Karl!
In a gun battle, a pistol is mostly a defensive weapon but a rifle can be both, pretty simple.
This is why for many years I've stoked my AR with M193. No M855, no 77 gr, just plain Jane M193. It's hard to beat those results.
@@NickFrom1228 People seem to forget that .223/5.56 is basically a varmint round. It's made for shooting coyotes, not people.
And In reality there not even as powerful as a 9mm
What about 460 magnum
@joesmith3661
That depends on the type of caliber but I have formula to help choose correct rounds.
Requirements
Chronograph to help measure muzzle velocity out of the specific weapon of choice.
Balistics gel to capture the bullet for analysis.
Micrometer to identify the size.
Step1
Get muzzle energy which is the weight and muzzle velocity (use chronograph).
Step 2
Identify the size of the bullet retrieve from ballistics gel.
Example
9MM and .45 ACP has a muzzle energy of 400 - 750 joules.
9MM (.360) Diameter
.45 ACP (.450) Diameter
If 9MM is hollow point they normally expand to 1.7 (so .600) and .45 ACP is full metal jacket
Lets say both are 600 joules but 9mm is hollow point
.600 / .450 diameter x 600 joules is 800 /600 joules = 1.33X.
much, much more powerful than 9mm lol. the hollow point in this video was garbage@@Dingleberry345

So true and so unfair.
very true, repost this everywhere, this is what needs to be talked about.

@@chroma6947 I am talking about SBRs when I refer to rifles. 5.56 out of a 10.5 is still over twice as energetic as an mp5, so that's not true at all.

Sniper Rifles
-Long Range Shooting
-Hunting
Normally stays behind enemy lines to provide info and support fire and hunting big animals. Sadly, some snipers exceeding .308 are long, heavy and slow (which cant engage multiple targets) and will be outbeaten by short, light and fast guns (which can engage multiple targets).
Shotguns
-Self Defense (buckshot)
-Hunting (slug)
-Breaching (buckshot)
-Anti Vehicle (slug)
Good for defending against 1 or 2 targets or moving targets. Slug can take down some vehicle. However, its too risky at close range against ARs, SMGs or LMGs.
Sub Machine Guns
-Close Range Suppressing Fire
Light weight and compact, its high rate of fire and controllability allows easy and fast movement and endgagements, . However, most cant penetrate body armor and has lesser effective range.
Light Machine Guns
-Medium Range Suppressing Fire
Contrary to SMGs, they use rifle round, have longer barrels, are heavier and are mostly used stationary but they also are used for suppressing fire. Use them behind people using ARs and SMGs.
Assault Rifles
-Long Range Shooting
-Hunting
-Close Self Defense
-Close Range Suppressing Fire
-Medium Range Suppressing Fire
Mostly has characteristics of Shotguns, Snipers, SMGs and LMGs and can penetrate Body Armor.
Defensive Handguns
-Concealed Carry
-Close Range Self Defense
-Close Range Combat
-Fast Switch
-Great Back Up Weapon
-Great For Getting To Your Main Gun
ARs and Hanguns are probably the most versatile weapons. I would say choose a pistol/hangun over shotguns for close range combat. However, I would be okay using Shotguns for close range self defense.
AR Pistol quite similar results even though a bit shorter barrel?
12.5" 223, 915 ftlb of energy
9mm averaging 400 ftlb
I hear smaller than 10.5 is where the difference starts but still have fun w short barrels.
AR pistols lose effective lethality after 100 yards from what I've read.
@Joe John Yeah. My number was pulled from Hornady Critical Defense, chrono'd at 5500ft elevation.

Shot placement is definitely key. They can be equally as deadly if shot placement is on target.
Karl the look on your face when you cleared that ball round and it hit the ground......damn that was money 🤣
