Its a tough topic because ballistics gel is an incredible example of human tissue damage. The problem is that there are so many variables to account for that there is not absolute best solution. We can discuss penetration values but a human being doesnt have consistent density in more than 1 or 2 cm2 of surface area. @@lanenicholson3712 it actually does. Normal velocity from a 20" barrel is 3250fps. In general 5.56 must be in the 2700fps range or greater to fragment correctly. A 10.5" barrel has velocities from even the best match cartridges around 2250fps to 2350fps max. Telling someone it doesnt matter will get someone killed because it does matter. What matters most is the projectile design. Fmjbt will tumble and fragment at 2750fps,but not at 2400fps. If someone is using a 10.5" barrel for home defense, use a round specifically designed for the velocities that can be expected. G2 research R.I.P. 5.56 is absolutely one of the best rounds for the home defense AR pistol and will fragment at the lower velocities of these shorter barrels.
@@FreedomInc There are actually quite a few tests showing decent tumbling and fragmenting of various .223 and 5.56mm even from a 7.5" barrel with most of those under 62 grains easily passing the 2200 fps mark. With a 10.5" barrel that definitely is no problem. Look up the PoBoy Special's channel and you'll see what I'm talking about. As for the G2 RIP round, it actually with its 65 grain projectile, is a bit slower than most but still would probably be fine in a 10.5" barrel. But really any 55 or 62 grain soft point hunting round in .223 would do fine. Where you run into trouble is the "varmint" rounds mean to rapidly disintegrate as these tend to have low penetration. Ironically the faster the velocity, generally the lower penetration they get as they disintegrate faster. Right now I'm trying to find more tests of the Federal American Eagle 50 grain varmint round through shorter barreled AR's to see if inversely , these get better penetration with lower velocity. But until then I'm just sticking with Remington 55 grain soft point rounds. They're pricey but worth it. For practice I just use cheap Federal XM-193 FMJ (which also performs reasonably well in gel even out of short barrels).
@@furryhatsgunsunicorns3219 I agree with most of what you said. If you read my comment it was based I the "fmjbt" projectile. Spire points will mushroom even at super low velocities. They fragment at these low velocities due friction and mushrooming. They aren't actually fragmenting they are being torn apart. The light varmint rounds disintegrate due to twist rates multiplied by velocities,or rather the 2 combined. The lighter the projectile in 5.56 or similar also means its shorter. Contrary to popular belief twist rates aren't a factor because of weights of the projectiles, rather their lengths. But since you have a max and minimum diameter weight is relative to length when comparing a certain type of projectile. With a 35 grain varmint round, really someone should be using a 1.12 or a 1.14 twist rate barrel. My point was that a fmjbt will fragment apon impact at 2750fps,but not at 2350fps which all you are going to get from a 10.5 inch barrel. I guess no matter what firearm you have, just do your due diligence so you dont poke self dealing holes in people before they kill you.(not meaning you personally)
Karl as usual you have enlightened me again. Picked up some inceptor ammo because small 380s don't feed hollow points well. Inceptor ammo works well and I had not even heard of it until you told me. The woman who demanded 380 loves it. Thanks again partner.
Yeah if you miss you definitely throw a shock wave at their ears along with big flash. Also the noise gets your neighbors attention. WP addresses this idea about silencers in home defense
@@jethrob258 WP brings up some good points but I and tons of others don't buy the silencer line. Handgun/Rifle within arms reach of my bed and both are canned. Cannot afford to lose any more of what I have left.
I've always liked my HD set up. Steel door that open up into a steel cage that traps anyone who makes it through the steel door. From there I have an M-134 set up behind a sandbag wall that I can meat grind the cage animals with. From there I have a dead mans switch on me that will detonate the 1000 lbs of Tannerite I have stock piled in my basement. Its a layered defense that I feel is a decent escalation of force
3nertia they have individually larger cavities and might be deeper but they are also easier to fish out and then plug. Like picking 3 big rocks out of a bucket of sand, but if I give you 15 small rocks you gota do a lot more digging thru that bucket
@@MIAthe305 Feels like they'd just be absorbed into the body in the case of frangible rounds (based on what they're made of). I dunno, something like G2 RIP[OUT] rounds seem to do a lot of damage and leave a lot of really nasty shrapnel
You have greatly changed my opinion of the 300 Blk, and now I can’t help but have lots of other video’s popping up with guys praising the 300. I’ve used Nosler Ballistic Tips for years as a hunting bullet, the only thing I’ll say is shot placement is critical or you ARE going to tear up a lot of meat. Yes, those things expand instantly. Thats why I have hundreds of 60 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips and hundreds of Hornady V-Max’s loaded for my AR’s. Nasty little buggers!! Thanks for doing this, I know you put a lot into this video. You shot some ammo I had never heard of and now I got to see how it worked. Thanks Karl.
Not everything needs to be Pauls Meat Target with high tech fleece bullet stop™. That clear ballistic setup with cloth and drywall gives a good visual representation. Those two .223 seems super effective, massive damage, no passthrough and possible to make super quick follow up shots, compared to a shotgun. Totally agree, this is properly the best & most practical, home defense weapon if bad guys are trying to get in.
Soft points would be much better than frangible for HD. This Tactical Rifleman guy is suspect anyways. In a few comments above this some guy said he "preferred rock salt for shotgun ammo" and ask TR what he thought of that. TR said "Rock Salt is fine", An
Glad you talked about hollow points filling the hole. Many cheaper hollow points and even some pricier ones will do this frequently. Do your research folks.
Lyle Caudill proven solid? Like solid point? It makes a hole but I wouldn’t carry it. If nothing else the hollow point on a bad day will act like a solid. On a good day it will open up much bigger.
3nertia that’s what I load for my kit and what I hunt with. Cheaper than TAP, very accurate. I also carry a mag of steel core just in case, but use 55gr Hornady for most cases.
Same here. Might have been nice to add in Critical Defense round(.223 & .45) for comparison to standard hollow point. That's also why I prefer ballistic tip over open tip rounds.
Thanks! Definitely some life saving information in this one, frangible ammo in a carbine seems like a great option, you could probably get really short on the barrel too if it's only for home defense depending on the size of your home and property, don't really need to be landing shots at 500 meters under those circumstances.
That frangible .223 round was the most impressive for this test. Not sure about the whole "back half of the block" rule, but I would bet my life on those rounds, knowing it's game over for whoever gets one decently placed. Interesting also the addition of cloth. That very well could be one of the more important considerations to take away from this video.
A shotgun is Ok if you use the right rounds. OO Buck is favored by military and law enforcement because it can kill at 50m. For up close and personal against humans, #4 buck is the saner choice. You get 24+ wounds instead of 9, and way less penetration.
@@cameronmccoy5051 Ammo selection is always a big deal. There's probably 5.56 and 9mm rounds that would punch through drywall, and I think there's a polymer tipped 45 that won't clog.
@@oddish4352 yeah I use #4 buck. FBI test show it to be about the best way to go. Be careful #4 buck is different than the #4 bird shot you see at all the stores. It can be confusing especially for new shooters.
@@Akguy545762 I know, and I'm careful. #3 Buck is also Ok, and the industry standard for 20 ga users. A 20 pellet load has the same throw weight and velocity as a law enforcement 12 ga OO load. And makes 11 more holes in the target.
great video! something occurred to me after the 3rd bullet got stopped by the 2nd layer of drywall. if you left about a 2-3" gap on the bottom of the 2nd layer of drywall, it would be very easy to retrieve the bullet that got stopped by it. and you could show it to viewers.
You really made me feel better with this video, I’ve used vmax or some other ballistic tip to load my HD rifle for at least ten years, Yeager and Read Hendricks both have said on videos that’s stupid, you need the penetration, they say use a heavy solid copper barrier blind type in 5.56. They both know more than me but I’ve shot so many deer and groundhogs with ballistic tips that I’ve stayed with them. Thanks, since I discovered your channel I definitely think you’ve got them both on experience and a better attitude.
These explosive varmint rounds also do much more tissue damage than the solid copper hollow points. Less damage to bystanders but more damage to the perp. Win win situation.
This was a very informative video. Based on my field experience, I would agree with Karl that the tipped .223/5.56 55-gr/62/gr/75gr rounds dump a lot of energy into their targets with a lower risk of over-penetration. For the 12-gauge testing, I would have liked to have seen some low-recoil 12-gauge tested in either #1 buck or #4 buck, both of which are manufactured by Federal in their Personal Defense lineup.
The only good thing about my daughters growing up and moving out of the house is that we no longer have to worry about injuring friendlies. I have two shotguns, a rifle and two pistols nearby and anyone outside the bedroom at night is an insurgent. 😎👍
Officer Gregg be careful. I woke up this morning to someone in my house. It was my ex looking for the kids backpack. Thank god I was not ready to just shoot the first thing that moved.
I don't want to shoot the drunk from next door that came into the wrong house. But..... Someone could scare the heck out of you that way. So....WTF And yes this has happened in LV
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I appreciate the knowledge. Meat ribs/pork or not, I don't care what you use, it was close enough to know what to use without putting your family at risk.
Best ballistics test I've seen so far. Too many testers do these tests through only drywall or only gel blocks and miss the main concern most people have with over penetration which is over penetration THROUGH the bad guy through the drywall. This should be the industry standard going forward. Great stuff.
If you are interested in the safety of loved ones, you do care about the shots that do not hit the target. Once that is taken care of, you don't need to worry about the rare case that the target and a loved one are exactly lined up.
Warrior. My AR is more of a standoff tool around the home. It's loaded with 69-77gr OTM or M855A1. Inside the home I've a disignated mag of 40-55gr. Hyper velocity varmint loads. Primary tool for a Home invasion type scenario is my CZ Scorpion braced pistol with a Surefire light and a 35 round mag of 124gr. Speer Gold Dot +P and Federal HST 124gr. +P. No shotgun even available inside the home. Thanks for the great advice.
If you're just really worried about overpentration, then frangible or varmint ammo is great, obviously. But the frangible didn't even come close to the standard of 12-16" of penetration, and the varmint wasn't much better. As I understand it, that standard is there so if you have a shot go through a guys arm or have to hit him from the side, the round will penetrate far enough to hit vital organs. Yeah the frangible ammo was nasty, but only to like 6"
could you do one more short video shooting the AR-15 with the V shock and the frangible ammo directly into the sheetrock to simulate a missed Target some of us live in apartments and trying to determine what is less likely to injure our neighbors

😆 this isn’t the 70’s, he’s says. Karl your the awesome! Haha
we arent wearing terrycloth either. rather see a cotton tshirt used.
JK 241 it’s still cotton like most clothes. Plus how much of a difference does a cotton terry cloth make vs a cotton t shirt?
I would never have believed a high velocity 5.56 round would stop inside that block. You blew my mind
Thank you! This video was extremely helpful! America!
Thanks for watching, TR
17:20 Never mind penetration... That's like a donkey kick to your vitals.
Riveting! Good work.
Don't forget the New n Improved high-tech fleas bullet stop!!!! To go with the 6 layers of denim!!!!!
Can’t get enough of this video! Frangible ammo will F up an intruder in a second. I never saw this display anywhere else, thanks!
Thanks for watching. TR
Well done !! I'm a "frangible" convert for in home defense......
Karl as usual you have enlightened me again. Picked up some inceptor ammo because small 380s don't feed hollow points well. Inceptor ammo works well and I had not even heard of it until you told me. The woman who demanded 380 loves it. Thanks again partner.
John, Glad we could help. TR
Honestly this is the best home defense ballistics test video I’ve seen on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, TR
The problem with 556 is in a confined space the overpressure and noise.
Yeah if you miss you definitely throw a shock wave at their ears along with big flash. Also the noise gets your neighbors attention. WP addresses this idea about silencers in home defense
@@jethrob258 WP brings up some good points but I and tons of others don't buy the silencer line. I've been in the same situations he spoke of but for even more years and I'm forced to protect what hearing I have left. Constant ringing since 03/2007 and no signs it will stop. Handgun/Rifle within arms reach of my bed and both are canned. Cannot afford to lose any more of what I have left.
Either go with a SBR + can or keep a pair of electronic hearing pro next to your rifle.
that interceptor ammo slaps.
going to get a few boxes for home defense.
Pine Valley Munitions also makes great Frangible ammo. Use code TR5 to save 5% off everything on their website. TR
The obvious solution for some of these rounds is to make sure your family members and loved ones wear four layers of denim.
Hahahahaha that's fantastic!
Amazing how simple the best solutions are
Going back through some of my favorite episodes. Over 648,000 subscribers! Love ya, Karl.
Decent enough! 😂
@@badraccoon333 right?! 😄
Hmm. That's a pretty good suggestion. I'll take two, in case I need a backup, or want to look cool firing one in each hand.
The knowledge / information that you provide is greatly appreciated here in the PNW.
Thanks for watching, TR
No pork chop pectorals? No patented fleece back stop? Pffffffft
Right?! Pssh unreal
@@tylerwill5250 would you look at that ! Just look at it .

High tech fleece
I know.. fake experts, right
the 300 blackout close quarters round going 2600 fps out of a 10.5 in barrel is another great choice.
As someone who’s studying to be a surgeon. That frangible stuff is a nightmare
Wouldn't the ammo with "petals" that break off be just as bad? Still lots of veins/arteries and shit to close up, no?
Trocar's
3nertia they have individually larger cavities and might be deeper but they are also easier to fish out and then plug. Like picking 3 big rocks out of a bucket of sand, but if I give you 15 small rocks you gota do a lot more digging thru that bucket
@@MIAthe305 Feels like they'd just be absorbed into the body in the case of frangible rounds (based on what they're made of). I dunno, something like G2 RIP[OUT] rounds seem to do a lot of damage and leave a lot of really nasty shrapnel
i'm more interested about the bullet types the mortitian considers a nightmare...
Thanks for watching, TR
Not everything needs to be Pauls Meat Target with high tech fleece bullet stop™.
That clear ballistic setup with cloth and drywall gives a good visual representation.
Those two .223 seems super effective, massive damage, no passthrough and possible to make super quick follow up shots, compared to a shotgun.
Totally agree, this is properly the best & most practical, home defense weapon if bad guys are trying to get in.
Great work on the video. I am a oddball in that I prefer the 40 s&w and I use plain old 55 grain soft points for home defense.
Soft points would be much better than frangible for HD. This Tactical Rifleman guy is suspect anyways.
In a few comments above this some guy said he "preferred rock salt for shotgun ammo" and ask TR what he thought of that.
TR said "Rock Salt is fine",
An
The loaded one within reach 👌
GEEZUS!, that inceptor 223 is bananas!
Glad you talked about hollow points filling the hole. Many cheaper hollow points and even some pricier ones will do this frequently. Do your research folks.
Precisely why I use a proven solid.
Lyle Caudill proven solid? Like solid point? It makes a hole but I wouldn’t carry it. If nothing else the hollow point on a bad day will act like a solid. On a good day it will open up much bigger.
I'm liking the performance I see from the polymer-tipped hollowpoints so far (in demos like these)
3nertia that’s what I load for my kit and what I hunt with.
RIP hand towel, you will be missed...
Died for a worthy cause.
Thanks for watching, TR
The Paul Harrell meat target is ideal but...
Wow of all the ballistic gel tests Ive seen online finally one that actually has some good info.
Thanks for watching, TR
Great review. Thanks for putting this together. Very good to show to the family when training them what to use and why.
Thanks for watching, TR
Probably the best video I have seen on the subject. You have changed my mind.
Bill Burr needs to show this to the gun store guy trying to sell him a shotgun for “the Spread”
A shotgun is Ok if you use the right rounds. OO Buck is favored by military and law enforcement because it can kill at 50m. For up close and personal against humans, #4 buck is the saner choice. You get 24+ wounds instead of 9, and way less penetration.
@@oddish4352 i think its ok if it is what you have available, but I think there are better options if you can get them.
Why did i start laughing when the .223 round dispersed immediately? Best!
F. Your channel is so good man. I wish more people knew about it.

Damn that's alot of fresh gel blocks.
@Chad Hulsizer hopefully you have a massive vat and don't have to melt them down one at a time. Ha thanks for sharing. Cheers
@Chad Hulsizer thanks for sharing that, I hadn't thought about it like that. I definitely would love to see a video about the process. Thanks
great video! something occurred to me after the 3rd bullet got stopped by the 2nd layer of drywall. if you left about a 2-3" gap on the bottom of the 2nd layer of drywall, it would be very easy to retrieve the bullet that got stopped by it. and you could show it to viewers.
I have the same exact towels, now I know their not bullet proof.
Good to know. That knowledge may save your life in an emergency.
I never get tired of watching this video... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very helpful demonstration... thanks for the knowledge- cheers.
Shane K ask yourself who’s likely to have shot more assholes, this guy or the 2 you mentioned who make videos for money and train internet ninjas?
These explosive varmint rounds also do much more tissue damage than the solid copper hollow points. Less damage to bystanders but more damage to the perp. Win win situation.
"The surgeons gonna hate you. Great performance"
The best gun and ammo is the one you can shoot the best especially in the middle of the night.
Thanks to this video I know what Ammo I want for my home defense AR!
So....WTF
And yes this has happened in LV
Hope nobody throws this psycho a surprise party
This is the overkill mindset that is going to get our guns taken away
Great video I watch it several times just to see all the slow motion. Thanks Karl.
Glad you enjoyed it
I accidentally shot them through the same hole
Accidents happen
Thank you for taking the time to do this. I appreciate the knowledge. Meat ribs/pork or not, I don't care what you use, it was close enough to know what to use without putting your family at risk.
About time Uncle Karl! I called off work waiting for your video
Best ballistics test I've seen so far. Too many testers do these tests through only drywall or only gel blocks and miss the main concern most people have with over penetration which is over penetration THROUGH the bad guy through the drywall. This should be the industry standard going forward. Great stuff.
Thanks for watching. Please help us share this. Strength and Honor, TR
If you are interested in the safety of loved ones, you do care about the shots that do not hit the target. Once that is taken care of, you don't need to worry about the rare case that the target and a loved one are exactly lined up.
This was educative. Thank you for the work you put out for us.
On the other hand, what do you think about HPBT projectiles from 223 rifle?
They are very accurate. However, they do not expand consistently
Excellent video, sold me on switch to frangible.
Get the lightest, fastest ammo you can find, frangible or ballistic tip, and then shoot it out of the longest barrel you own.
I will add your idea to our video idea list
Tactical Rifleman. thank you sir that would be great after seeing it expand in that Jell it seems like a reasonable ammo to use
