- Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Movie?
In the latest episode we look back at what happened to the Star Wars spinoff effort SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, which ended up being a financial disaster and critical flop for the usually cast-iron franchise. However, it wasn't just a case of fans not caring for the film, it was a case of a film that seemed doomed early on, as original directors Chris Miller & Phil Lord were fired and replaced three-quarters of the way through shooting with veteran director Ron Howard picking up the slack and reshooting nearly the whole film. My biggest thing is it's not like Han Solo was that old when we meet him.
Despite in some ways being the most obvious Solo actually makes the least sense since that wasn't his name till he joined the Imperial Army.
When is "The Fall of Kathleen Kennedy" coming out? Look, there was NOTHING wrong with this movie but fanboys were pushing their own idealism and this film was dead before it even hit the theaters. The PROBLEM is DISNEY being even involved and Kathleen Kennedy putting her -.02 in about everything. Kennedy was (probably) pissed because the woman, in this movie, didn't crush everyone and need no one. Yes, Kennedy hates male leads.
PS - @#$% "family friendly", nobody bitched about episodes 4-6 posters and there were weapons all over it.

Now that the Skywalker story is coming to an end I think everything from here on out lends itself to TV. Our main looking glass will always be through Luke and without him it’s all small potato’s but in an expansive universe that fans are hungry to explore.The only issue is that you don’t get the top flight special effects with TV.

May I also add that the TIMING of this film's release did it absolutely no favors either. Only two weeks after 'Avengers - Infinity War' and just one week before 'Deadpool 2'.
Yeah but it suffered in more ways than timing. It didn't feel like a Star Wars movie. I'm not saying it was it was bad but it was missing the Force.
And it should not have had a summer release. Why the hell did they do that.

What always sinks these movies is the potential of what could've been instead of what we received...
TLJ was trying something different but failed. Execution is the most important thing about filmaking.

Inter-sectional misandrist feminism**, humiliating the male characters, exclusively portraying male characters as dumb and/or villainous while portraying women as unrealistically talented, skilled, smart, and heroic.
About 60% of the movie going audience (which is really under 20% of the public- surprised me) finally got fully triggered. And now anything can trigger them again.
They are "mad as hell and they are not going to take it any more" and they are sitting on their wallets.
And a lot of actors and studios who feel unreasonably entitled to those people's money started attacking those people. And that made it personal.
Leading to a series of huge flops.
* I've been watching scrubs and I can see this trend developing with the Elliot character in Season 6 and 7 tho it's mild compared to TLJ. But I was browsing old forums and a lot of folks hated her for it.
** 1st wave Feminism is cool . the goal is fairness and equal treatment. 3rd wave feminism has a lot of crazy misandrist ideals in it and it definitely isn't seeking fairness or equal treatment.

I've read books and comics that did it better. Fin as a character, seen it better in a book. Han Solo movie, yep better novels. Rogue one, yep, I've seen it done better in RPG books, and the Han Solo novels.
Solo was a fun adventure story. Last Jedi sucked.

I disagree. This movie showed why Han wanted to be a scoundrel, his meeting and rescue of Chewie (don't tell me you weren't curious how Han saved Chewie when you heard he had a life debt"). It's not a world breaker, but it's not a bad movie either. Forgettable, because it's part of Star Wars cannon it will not be forgotten, regretted by some for sure, but enjoyed by some also.
Brian Nagar sorry man ... Curiosity isn’t enough to make something rememberable. It’s just enough to get you to watch. Though it’s just an opinion, but I would say a good many share it...I had no investment in the characters nor the story. I didn’t go back to watch it. Fulfilling ones’s curiosity isn’t always a good thing in storytelling. It is the mystique that makes something larger than life. Han is no longer a man of mystery, he’s just a regular predictable being in some story now, processed like a can of beans.

There's all these awesome slowdown/speed up cuts, the entire film is so dark looking you think it was shot entirely in a cave, and Han breaks Darth Maul's neck in a fit of tearfilled rage.
Also Han asks a young Greedo, "Do you bleed?"
Oh and Russell Crowe shows up as ghost and talks to Han at random moments throughout the movie for some reason.

@The Logomaker I and quite a few of my friends for one didn't watch Solo in theatres because we were still feeling let down by TLJ. (making it our shared first star wars movie ever missed in theatres and my first star wars movie not watched during it's first week in theatres since my birth.)
And I didn't watch the RoS in theatres either (wanted to wait for good reviews... but they never came)
@The Logomaker As much as I doubt that it is that bad, if it was just as bad as TLJ that would have been enough for me to be glad about my decision not to watch it.
And just to make that clear; my doubt stems from how bad TLJ was and the therefore missing space for movies to be that much worse. If it really was a Kubrick film compared to Solo, Solo would be the clear no contest winner for "worst movie ever made"... and lest not forget that there are still gems like "The Room" out there.

Do yourself a favor and read the EU Han Solo trilogy, it's waaaaay better than this movie.
Why don't they want to make money? There are easily 40 to 60 Billion dollar star wars films in the EU if they would just be faithful to that canon.
Also the Han Solo Adventure novels, and the Lando novels.
I read that as a kid.
I love the film, but those are good too. Fun fact, these were a good influence on the film's production. Screenwriter Jon Kasdan is a HUGE EU fan and loves this stuff.

This is a fun, enjoyable film - sitting beside Rogue One and the Mandalorian as fine continuations of the mythos. Is it perfect? No, but it has something the new trilogy lacks: characters that are engaging and interesting to watch.

Gotta be honest, you lost me in the first 5 minutes. Claiming anyone who dislikes a franchise that had one great trilogy only to then compound it with a terrible trilogy and a very mixed follow up - a series that should just not be as popular as it is yet people keep dumping money into it.....to say people are doing that for attention? Really, get some perspective. And I say this having been one of those people who showed up to every stupid midnight showing for Episodes 1, 2 and 3 and refuses to dump any more time or money into a series that doesn't deserve it.
It should have ended after the first 3 movies and gone out on a high note.
HAN SOLO's character story arc was completed with the original STAR WARS trilogy. nobody asked for a SOLO prequel.

I genuinely could not finish watching this movie. I was all about Han Solo when I was a kid in the 70s. I walked around with a 12 inch Han Solo action figure, and I mean everywhere I went. He was my childhood hero and my one of my favourite movie characters for over 40 years. I didn't think it would be the best movie ever made, but I didn't think it would be so atrociously bad. For me, someone with a decades long affection for the character Han Solo and not being able to finish the movie. It hurt. Anyone that says it was a good movie has no idea about, and only pretends to know, who Han solo is.
80's car chase tropes. A train heist. More lazy tropes.
And THAT'S how it's done in Hollywood!
To be fair, even the original Star Wars film is loaded with tropes that borrow from a bunch of sources (Flash Gordon, WWII films, etc). The difference is that it at least FELT fresh at the time because it hadn’t been combined with sci-fi and fantasy in such a spellbinding way. Now, the new films feel like cookie-cutter screenplays with forgettable characters.

And that opening theme still gives me goosebumps.
I was 13 when the first Star Wars movie came out. Which I believe was the perfect age to see it. And I did. Today watching the franchise is like watching your best friend get tortured in front of you to me. To death, revived then tortured to death again, and again. At this point I'm numb and just can't even care anymore. I'm cheering the torturerers on at this point. Yeah kill him again. Do it!

DunkMan 11 NBA would have been a good job if the character hadn’t supposed to be Han Solo. Had to keep reminding myself during the movie that I was supposed to be watching a young Solo, ruined it for me. There are other actors that look and talk exactly like Ford, that have played younger versions of him in other movies. They just dropped the ball when it came to casting.

getting a nod from Harrison Ford to play a young Han Solo is quite an achievement. you can't ask for more then that for any young Actor. I saw Solo I enjoyed it even with the issue of Directors and having Ron Howard come in to finish the film.

Was it all the re shoots? No sonic completlet redid a character.

I actually really liked this movie, I definitely feel like “The Last Jedi” (which I didn’t like) put a dark cloud over it. People hated on it before it even came out .

People were so pissed off about Episode 8 that they boycotted Solo in order to try to get Kathleen Kennedy fired by Disney (which FINALLY seems to be happening!)

TLJ completely murdered Disney Star Wars. Before TLJ anything with the name was basically a money printing press.
The prequels had their fair share of haters, at least the first one did, but they all did well, and most people thought they were at least okay.
I can say for certain that a LOT of people didn't watch Han as a direct result of TLJ being absolute garbage.

This is a well constructed review... unfortunately, it’s also the WORST SW review I’ve ever seen.
WHY?
Because it TOTALLY MISSED THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT REASON for Solos questionable performance$.
The audience PROTESTED THE PREVIOUS DISASTER with the NEXT film. You can’t protest a McDonalds drive through you didn’t like buy going back in time and deciding to boycott McDonalds. Not everyone drives a Lambo.
You CAN, however... choose to NOT GO EVER AGAIN.
So the protest is felt AFTERWARD...
Solo is NOT a bad film... but I refused to see it in theaters because I wanted to send a clear message to Disney.
Most reviewers get this right. You did not... and it’s the most important takeaway from those events.
Solo is boring. Then again, I was never a Star Wars fan to begin with. Despite being a lover of sci-fi films, the main Skywalker saga partially only holds my attention.

The only good thing about this movie...the ONLY good thing...is we finally get to see Chewie treated with respect. He is finally (somewhat) portrayed as the badass he is.
Could it have been that bad that it was worth making the movie twice? I keep hoping that Disney will see what's going on with The Snyder Cut and maybe let Lord and Miller finish their version. It was pretty much done. I mean, seriously, good work Kathleen Kennedy. It's not like she fired them and they went and won an Academy Award or anything. Disney and their rash decisions. James Gunn is starting up his own little franchise with The Suicide Squad. Lord and Miller have Spider-verse. Well done mouse house.

Alden Ehrenreich reminds me way more of a young Dennis Quaid than a young Harrison Ford.

It was a good movie the best characters in it were Han and Lando and both of the actors did great as acting as Solo and Lando
@@DunkMan11 I took about 20 mins to get into new Han (he was given a poison chalice and must be given credit for what he did, just imagine walking into work to play HAN SOLO), then I had no issue, think he did a great job tbh. Glover as Lando was about as perfect a casting as JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson.
I think ppls expectations will NEVER be met.
It's a good movie. I loved it, but I viewed it as I do with all Star Wars movies, with massive nostalgia.

No mention of how they turned Lando into a pansexual for no reason other than to be "woke"? Oh, and lest we forget the super annoying SJW robot, L3-37. Btw, a lot of people (me included) boycotted seeing the movie in theatres to protest against Disney ruining Star Wars.

The failure has nothing to do with the character or "toxic fandom." A Han Solo movie should have been great, but when you killed off the character in the main-line movies -- making new stories of his younger years pointless by default -- when you actively emasculate the character in the storytelling -- a sign of the strangely overt political winds at Lucasfilm -- and when you cast someone without enough charisma to carry the role, it's bound to flop. And did. Solo is my favorite character, but the old Han Solo novels are much better than this misfire of a movie. I finally get what I'd always hoped for -- a Han Solo movie -- and it's pretty terrible because Lucasfilm doesn't have its act together.
More like them thinking we will eat up anything they regurgitate out. I think it's more like you can't have so many mistakes and reshoots for movies that use a lot of expensive special effects. How do they charge for those? Per hour work done or per shot/scene

I didn’t have much expectations for this film, but i gotta be honest- this was a really good movie! I thoroughly enjoyed it actually. Would have loved a sequel!
I thought it was going to be pretty bad due to the troubled production, but it's star wars, so I still bought a ticket. Thoroughly enjoyed it, it's not perfect, but honestly the only ones that are perfect in my mind are the ogs. Love the new ones too!

You are objectively wrong about The Last Jedi. Just because it didn't go in the directions you were expecting does not mean Rian Johnson was "making it up as he went along".

That's cool. I think about half the customers liked it. And about half the customers hated it.
And the half that hated it was buying all the merchandising (since merchandising sales collapsed after TLJ).
And the half that hated it was the half that had been going two or more times.
I think that Disney Canon Star Wars can't support budgets over $150 million going forward. I think that much damage has been done to the customer base. I mean-- business 101: Don't attack your own customers. And Kennedy, Abrahms, and Johnson attacked the customers for *months* (Johnson made another attack only about 7 weeks ago).

I think if there wasn’t so many production problems then it wouldn’t have lost money.
They should have got Ron Howard in from the start
Yeah, the current run of Lucasfilm movies have been a mess with trying to reestablish the Star Wars name. I mean, Rogue One loses its director and had numerous scenes from the trailer cut along with original story beats, TLJ somehow didn't have issues behind the scenes, Solo lost its directing duo (who've since won Oscars for reinterpreting the mythos of Spider-Man) because they strayed to far from the script, TRoS lost its director for making a good awful movie (just wiki Book of Henry), then we got the recent Benioff & Weiss firing shortly after they rushed Game of Thrones to a poor series finale and admitted the show everyone loved was more due to luck and passionate crew and actors. That's not even going into the Josh Trank Boba Fett movie, but hey we got The Mandelorian so it's a wash.
@The Logomaker I don't think it was that simple. L&M cast a group of actors where their lead couldn't improv, their multiple takes were costing the studio an insane amount of money and they deviated from Kasdan's script (the one where Kennedy negotiated Kasdan's return to the series in TFA by guaranteeing a Solo movie) so much that in conjunction with everything listed, they had to be let go.
Remember, Solo was supposed to be a light space romp with a bit of comedy thrown in there. L&M decided it should be a reexamination of the Star Wars mythos seen through the eyes of its most cynical character. The only issue being it was costing the studio way too much and deviated too much from an established script. But hey, if L&M, Trevorrow, Edwards and Gilroy received credits for their previous work on their respective movies then its not a complete wash.
@The Logomaker Still, it was Kasdan's script and passion project (I mean a lot of what we learned about Han in 5,6 and 7 came from the elder Kasdan, if anyone knew the character it was him). As directors L&M should have known and respected that. The one thing reported over and over about Solo beyond it going overbudget, was how much the cast couldn't jibe with what L&M were doing. It speaks volumes, that 80% of the movie was completed through L&M before they were let go and Howard was able to reshoot it almost entirely for less in less time.
I'm more impressed it turned into a functional movie and not something like Justice League where you can clearly tell two different directors filmed it.
@The Logomaker I'm not doubting L&M at all. They are Oscar/BAFTA winners for a reason. However, it should have been stipulated from the start, in pre-production that they respect the script. Of the movies they've directed that they didn't write or produce, the only movie they they had less of a hand on was 21 Jump Street co-writen by one of its stars. Other movies and tv shows they had a greater hand of control or just wrote together.
I can't really bad mouth Kasdan since he wrote the nuances of the character and was approved by the actors playing him. I have no idea how it didn't work, it should have been a match made in the cosmos especially after L&M's reverence for the series. However, if they butt head with the writer(s), did numerous takes only to go over budget and not be close to being finished filming by the time the first trailer to TLJ comes out and release is on Memorial Day weekend, there needed to be a change.
It does add a cloud over the current Lucasfilm regime. For movies that made so much to have so many behind the scenes issues, I'm amazed they've been so successful in these few troublesome years. It's equal parts a miracle and troubling they're still afloat. After, TROS here's to another 5 years.
@The Creator Mabye LandM could’ve done an original story in this world with an original smuggler character created by them instead of Han. That way the have more freedom with his/her fate and overall story.
Hopefully they can make a sw movie with their input. I doubt that I’ll happen but wouldn’t it be great. If there letting taikia do his own thing Mabye there is a way lord and Miller could too
I don't get it. solo failed because of the Studios choices not the fans INTEREST. If they were run better it would have done better. How about they do it right next time and make another
You are wrong. Solo was not fun, not enjoyable, and was the worst movie in the series. Prequels in general are a bad idea. There is no tension or drama when you know the characters have to survive as they are in later movies. In order to overcome this, you have to have an interesting story and good writing. Solo had neither. They filled it with callbacks to items and characters that were boring and uninteresting. How did Han get his dice? Someone just handed them to him. How did Han get his name? Someone simply gave it to him. How did Han get his blaster? Someone just tossed it to him. These were wasted opportunities to expand his story, but were treated as an afterthought. How did Han become such a good pilot? No one knows. Honestly, there is no reason a Solo prequel couldnt have been a really good story with a good screenplay. Instead we got this shovel of poop.
