Lando Calrissian was played to perfection by Billy Dee Williams. He was sly, charming, charismatic, smart, but also complex. He did stuff to try and warn Han off, tried to work with the Imperials to get his friends out of a bad situation (and himself) because at heart, he is a gambler. He sees the odds, checks his assets, and will gamble to try and find a way to win. That is why we love him.
Him banging a robot Karen accomplishes exactly one thing: It makes him look stupid and lame. And Donald Glover is NO Billy Dee Williams. There is no angle "Solo" does not fail at or infuriate.

The worst is that Lando's character could have been more selfish, etc, and still be done well
Since it's a prequel and he's younger, him being less of a leader or less moral makes a lot of sense, but only in a "He didn't develop these quality yet" And for it to work, there needs to be a spark of it already
But that's not what they tried to do at all, in fact, they try to retcon Ep V and VI Lando.

I have a feeling I know why they were sacked, they were taking the mickey out of everything KK promotes, including feminists and KK couldn't have that. One of the few specific details that have come out is that they weren't happy with Alden Ehrenreich's performance, even going so far as to hire him an acting coach. Ehrenreich is a talented actor who'd already given several great performances before _Solo,_ so if that story is true, it suggests Lord and Miller aren't the easiest directors to work with. Ron Howard is famous for being easygoing and not having any big ideas of his own, so it's a mystery why Disney didn't hire him to begin with.

Not to mention, adding Billy Dee Williams to the cast was as big of a deal at the time as having Samuel L. Jackson to the prequels. Bringing in a relevant actor with a built-in fan base and casting him in cinema changing epic, which would lend some credibility to the movie with an older crowd (at the time.)

I know it was not as big of a deal as casting in Samuel L. Jackson, but you still have the same idea abut an already relevant actor being a proven talent. Samuel L. Jackson played Mace Windu in all three parts of the prequel trilogy, but Jimmy Smits was a new guy who debuts in the middle entry of the prequel trilogy, following the same pattern as Billy Dee Williams and Frank Oz before him in The Empire Strikes Back. I am sure it was interesting for the people who watched Smits in the legal dramas LA Law and NYPD Blue, to see why he was a very good fit for playing Bail Organa.

I would absolutely love to hear an open discussion with you and the writers to ask them what their rationale was!
It just seems like whatever happens is because the plot needs it to happen.
I'm a big OT fan, I haven't watched any new Star Wars since 2002, but I enjoyed your dissection of this movie.
May I offer a slightly different point of view?
I don't think they were trying to destroy Lando's character. Look at it from Disney's values' point of view:
Lando is POC. That means he's a good guy or at least not a villain.
The writer said they wanted to do "something LGBT" so they made Lando "pansexual." The writer and the actor seemed pretty enthusiastic and giggly about it. Unless they changed the definition since the movie came out, "pan": a person is attracted to male or female or gender-anything orientation-anything. It seems to refer specifically to humans. It does not mean attraction to droids, robots, Borg, cyborgs. That is called robo- or techno-sxual.
They think any kind of not-hetero-monogamous"sx exploration" is cool and groundbreaking.
Lando may even be a self insert. They can brag to all their friends that they created movie history.
When some kind of chaos danger was happening, and Lando couldn't find L3 and was calling out for her, that was probably supposed to show that in a moment when his life was in danger, he cared more about her than his own life. They probably consider it romantic.
I'm sure they think cheating at cards was clever. I don't know anything about cards, and neither do the writers. I would've checked with an expert before putting a scene like that in a movie, but they needed the story to unfold like that.
I don't think it's a matter of disrespect actually. I think Disney just has no idea. They don't even realize how much they don't know.
I also believe that, although KK almost certainly deliberately wanted to destroy Luke and Han, that they think they're improving on George Lucas's work.
I just cannot imagine them deliberately writing a bad movie that they know is bad and that they want it to be bad. Same for ROP and She-Hulk etc. they really think they're creating masterpieces.
Thanks very much for the video!

Until someone with balls comes and retcons what KK did, I am done with SW for good.

THANK you. As much as I hate Disney's revisionism and choice to make Han's last name not his actual last name (they seriously just can't let _anything_ be, huh), what I heard they did to Lando in this film is why I haven't (and won't) watch it. It's not like anyone needs much explanation on it, either: I'm sure Disney made every concession possible to get Donald Glover, who could legitimately become of the last real movie stars given the right vehicle, in this movie. But interpreting Lando Calrissian, or really any character, but especially one beloved by families for at least two generations, through the lens of one's own personal sexuality is a BAD idea. They're not helping his cause here.
I also don't need to see the Kessel Run, how Han met Chewie, how Han won the Falcon, how Han got his name, how Han met Lando all in one movie. Pick ONE. And I don't need to see how Han got his blaster or his fruggin' dice at all. It doesn't help that I look at Ehrenreich and see more of a young Dennis Quaid than Harrison Ford.

It would be quite easy to make Han's character to make sense. Have him be a child of a crook, flying around the galaxy with his single dad, leaning to be like him.
A space adventure of a misfit father and a son growing up to be just like him 🤷‍♀

Love your vids, Despot. Lando running straight at the star destroyers is a real US Navy tactic from the Pacific theater. Small, outgunned PT boats and destroyers would get close abeam to large cruisers and battleships and light them up. The Japanese guns couldn’t depress their muzzles enough to engage. N. Vietnamese army also used tactic with their infantry to negate US close air support. They called it ‘grabbing the enemy by the belt’. Cheers!

He got his act together after L3 Waller Bridge was destroyed. It’s like being in a relationship with a Feminist IRL. So long as she’s in your life she’ll hold you back from your true potential. When it’s removed from Landonald’s life he gets his shit together and becomes the Lando we remember

Anyone here ever read the old starwars book 'Han Solo at Star's End'? I did as a kid, it was awesome. It would have made a fantastic film. It was short, punchy, full of memorable characters, had a simple story about busting people out of a prison. It was classic Han, he was gun-running, dodging the empire with his superior wits, getting reluctantly drawn into an altruistic endeavor despite himself (thus revealing the heart of gold under his cynical pirate's exterior), all classic high adventure, it was a PERFECT for screen adaptation and they made this bullshit instead. You will burn in hell Kathleen

L3 plan to do a droid revolution is exact the same plan of IG-88 (a bounty hunter droid who appeared in empire strikes back) who wanted a droid revolution which would destroy all the biological life of the galaxy by emitting an signal from the second Death Star that would warn and “free” all the droids in the galaxy to start the revolution. And remember that in the old EU (legends timeline, which is this story comes from) IG-88 was a cold blooded murder with sarcastic personality traces just like L3, but the difference between them is that IG-88 is fricking amazing and is very cool in design wise and abilities wise.

They started throwing the EU away long before disney with the overrated trash that is TCW when it erased the original clone wars comics.
Ventress in TCW is a watered down retarded version of what she is in the comics same goes with grevious (especially him that show did him so dirty because George couldn't stand the thought that grevious would be more popular than Vader I shit you not he actually thought this and that's why he's a cowardly bitch) the night sisters and so on so forth.
Best part? outside of like one character who doesn't show up again until after ROTJ ventress, durge, barris offee (she was ruined to) aren't made so important to the over all plot and so intrinsically linked to the skywalkers that you question why they aren't in the OT like with ashoka.

You should do a video on how Waller-Bridge rose to "fame" and her movie history. It is worth the research for you, in my opinion, as it shows a perfect example of failing to the top. Frankly I am surprised none of you good content creators have gone down that road yet as it would undoubtedly be eye opening for your fans and bring a spotlight to what matters in modern Hollywood. Just a suggestion since I know you would do a great job making a video such as that (or something similar - perhaps about Kennedy).
