  • Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
In our latest episode we explore the 1999 surprise hit GALAXY QUEST, which had a long road to making it to the big screen. Starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Justin Long and Missi Pyle, this riff on Star Trek, directed by Dean Parisot, eventually got over its hurdles and made a galactic splash at the box office. Now, if we could just get that sequel...

But galaxy quest did someone almost unheard of now. It didn’t laugh at its fan base (fictional at the time). In recent years fans haven’t been respected very much. This really was a love letter.

I could deny my nature, but what pleasure is there in that? It's not like my appreciation for an attractive woman harms anyone. And Leo Martin's initial remark is completely valid. Sigourney Weaver looks stunning.

There's a similarly great quip from Laurence Olivier to Dustin Hoffman during the filming of Marathon Man. Dustin Hoffman arrived for shooting a bit worse for wear, so Olivier asked him how his week went. Hoffman tells him that he had stayed up for three days straight to shoot a scene because the script said the character had the look of someone who'd been up for three days. Olivier paused for a bit at the absurdity, and then said, "Why don’t you just try _acting?_ ”

The weekend it was released, I believe the studio or the distributor and the largest movie chain at the time had a dispute, which caused Galaxy Quest to not be in a lot of theaters across the country. That aside, it would be kinda cool if they did a thing in memory of Rickman. Maybe have the characters be mourning the loss of the actor, give reference to the actors other roles that were overlooked due to his popularity on the show (in a non comedic way) and get licensing for what they can to edit in imagery of actual Alan Rickman footage. If done right, could be a great way to honor him, while acknowledging he won't be joining us for the next part of this journey

I had the honour of meeting Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) when my daughter worked on a movie with him.
He was very kind and welcoming and seemed delighted to talk about his experiences while shooting Galaxy Quest.
I asked him what it was like to meet Sigorney Weaver and Alan Rickman and he said that all the cast members were fun to be around. I asked him how he came up with the voice of Mathesar and he replied, “I just channeled my ‘inner alien’”.
He introduced me to his lovely wife and autographed my Galaxy Quest DVD. He wrote, “To Vera, Never Give Up, Never Surrender! Enrico Colantoni”
Of course it was a wonderful experience and I watch the movie at least a couple of times each year.
I even wrote an idea for a sequel starring Enrico, where HE plays a character that experiences an encounter with the true Thermians. As many cameos as possible by the other Galaxy Quest cast would naturally be included, but Mr. Rickmans passing made me lose interest.
If Mr. Rickmans family was agreeable, footage of him could be used when other characters referred to his tragic death, and that would be a way to explain his absence and allow the story to continue.

    Fun Fact/Story:
After I watched this with my friends back then we decided to watch it a second time with the alien language on. Yes, the DVD had language track for the entire movie where everyone is speaking in this hilarious alien voice!
So, we were watching it and after a while the novelty wears off. Since we already know what will happen and what they say, we watched it as if this was our mother tongue. Then someone entered the room that didn't know the movie ... he watched us for some seconds, then shook his head, walked backwards and closed the door without saying anything!
He probably thought "Oh these nerds, what kind of silly crap are they doing again, who will ever understand them?" :)
