    What a sad situation.

I almost panicked realising too late that I definitely need to get a pen and write loads of these down before I saw that you put literally all these books in the vide description! THANK YOU! 😅This list is my god now.

Since the announcement I compiled a list for myself from those I have on the shelves, including mentioned here, thank you Scott!
Some of them were on my TBR for spring anyway.
Below are those that were not mentioned in the video.
    1. Stolen (Laestadius) and/or The Friend (Nunez)
    2. ~
    3. Life Sciences (Sorman), Unwell Women (Cleghorn, nonfiction)
    4. Elena knows (Pinero), Concerning my daughter (Kim Hye-jin)
    5. ~
    6. Minor Detail (Shibli)
    7. In Limbo (Deb Jj Lee, graphic novel) (I also think Arrival can be a good choice of a quick book - it has no words😅)
    8. My work (Ravn), Tomb of sand (Shree)
    9. Wuthering Heights (Brontë), Pnin (Nabokov)

This is a good list! I would be very happy reading those books myself, except there's a few I have read recently.

Like with most Misery books I approached this with trepidations, but (and it's a big BUT) some of my favourite books are in your recommendations and there are some on my TBR...
.. some I've DNF or paused because they were just too miserable....but that means you're right on target!
    Great list.....normally I'd say Happy Reading....Bye for now... 🙂😆

Yay for misery! I’ve already been staring at my TBR shelves searching for misery. Only a couple of prompts met so far but Black Beauty must be guaranteed misery for both animal and classic?!

It’s funny, I clicked on this video because Scott, you’re wonderful, but I thought “nah, I don’t really do miserable books”. Turns out I’ve already read a good whack of the books you suggested, but hadn’t saved them in my brain as miserable. And now I’m sitting here wondering if my sense of empathy has completely left the building? 🤔🤣 For the War prompt, can I suggest At Night All Blood Is Black… 😬

Purge by Sofi Oksanen is the top of miserable reads.

😆I literally just finished a video saying that depressing narratives sell and there's demand for it, I'll have to film an insert linking people who like depressing narratives to check out this readathon.

oh come OOOOOOOOOOOOON... I'm already doing two readathons *SOBS* FINE... fine... I'll see what I can come up with. Except... I don't think i can do animal intentionally. terminal illness I sometimes have a hard time with... so I might have to find a work around for those two. But books that really hit the heart stick with you so ... I'm not anti misery. Wow. I'm not the only one who isn't a huge fan of Hemmingway. I can appreciate aspects but he just doesn't click with me. I always end up goin GRR against one of the characters.

Clearly I'm not a happy person, I've read way too many on your list. Apparently I love misery!😅 However, Bodies of Light has just been waiting for me on my shelf so that's a definite for May.

Sh*t i had exponentially more misery on my shelves than i thought 😅.. off the top of my head/ cuff/ mood; Jude (i know im late); The Wings Of The Dove (James 'The Master' of Misery); Birdsong (like the cover + the title); The Whirlpool (Gissing); The Beautiful & The Miserable/ Damned (Fitzwhathisface); The Awakening & Giv's Room & will ever *ever* get to Anna K?🧐🤔 If i read a few of these it's a win. TMI? 😆😊

Haha, it looks like Kite Runner appears 3 times on your list in the description box. Think you all really want us to read that one? 😄 I love a pun, so a disMaying book theme is great! Also love a bingo card that doesn't make me feel like I'm losing brain cells just looking at it.
I've been listening to the audiobook of 8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster, and think it could go in the war, feminist, or translated (?) bingo square.Well written, didn't seen any Booktubers choosing to read and review it from the Women's Prize longlist. I don't like the term "comfort women," a horrible and insulting euphemism. Spoiler -- in one section of this book, women are forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military, 50 men a day and 100 per day on weekends. They were tortured until they died. There is no comfort in that. I think it will turn out to be a story of resilience, but that section is traumatizing.
Update: just read The Sentence by Louise Erdrich. It is full of misery. Could go in the Illness square. Covid.

      @GunpowderFictionPlot  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Haha, its a very good book for this readathon (as too are his other novels, I could have varied it a bit).
8 Lives of a Century Old Trickster isn't translated, but it definitely fits into war and feminist, also Illness and Immigrant, although i wouldn;t call it an immigrant novel. I will be reviewing it soon, I'm just reviewing all 16 books together. I am very glad the women's prize included it on their list.

I am legitimately still traumatized about the horse scene in Crime and Punishment. If you need a content warning for animal cruelty, please do not read that book, or at the very least ask someone who’s read it what pages to skip. It won’t affect your understanding of the book at all and no one needs to be triggered by something that awful
