100% with you on your plea to publishers. So many Australian books I’m interested in and I just can’t access them easily here in the U.K.
Love how you shine a light on the Australian book prizes ❤️

UK resident here & I loved your plea to publishers. I often cannot access the Aussie books that you talk about🥲

I am with you on the publishers responsibility to get their books available in all formats.

thank you for covering theeese! There are many I will take a look for, but I can tell you Only Sound Remains is not available in the US. *sniffsniff* I did an auto-pause search to add it to a tag of books on goodreads I have going...

I had trouble finding that one in Australia, I can't imagine how hard it would be elsewhere.

Only Sound Remains - just bought the Kindle version in the US. I prefer to buy from independent bookstores, but I was glad to at least have an option.

Of this bunch I’ve read Stone Yard Devotional and Hospital, and I’m plodding my way through Praiseworthy against my will! I already owned The Sitter, and Anam and Edenglassie were on my wishlist. I’m going to have a red hot go at reading the longlist this year - wish me luck!

Sounds like a really interesting range. I definitely want to read Anam.

I only picked 3 on the list. I still suspect that Praiseworthy will win but I intend to try to read the longlist. The Miles Franklin longlist is when I read Aus male authors 😊 otherwise I tend to stick with women writers, or writers I know. I've found all but 2 at my local library so far. Can't believe that my local library still hasn't purchased Hospital. Wall isn't there either!
Really love that you do these prize list videos, Scott. Happy Reading

Having just cleared out my dad's storage unit, Wall sounds like it would be a good one to pick up.
And yes, it's a problem getting some of these books. A couple aren't available in the U.S. at all.

Great video Scott! Working my way through catching up on videos post-surgery, so I was stoked to see one of your award videos posted. I’m not super familiar with the Miles Franklin award nor was I familiar with most of these authors. Hospital sounds like the book I’m most interested in. I will definitely be looking to see if it’s available in my area.
Publishers do better. It’s super frustrating to try to read an award list and finding books completely inaccessible.
Also, I was hoping maybe you or Gemma could add me to the group chat for Misery May. I’ve got the book and have been reading it, but I think my reply with my voxxer name got missed. My account is the same name as here on TH-cam. BandysBooks

I have read three of these. Edenglassie is good, I am very familiar with the area it describes so maybe I enjoyed it more for that. I struggle with Alexis Wright. If she wins both the Stella and Miles Franklin I'll probably give it a try but I find her difficult. Like you I didn't know of the other titles, and I join you in your rant. I went to a bookstore yesterday and could only find one of the longlist that I haven't read other than Praiseworthy and looking online it seem they are in low stock if held at all by other independent bookstores. And this is in Australia. Hopefully that will change over the next couple of weeks, but I too wonder why they have not been marketed at all. We have some excellent writers and the publishing industry is doing them a disservice.

I read a novel (Song of a Captive Bird by Jasmin Darznik) about Forugh Farrokhzhad, the poet who's mentioned in Only Sounds Remains. She herself was a fascinating (real) person - badass feminist who lived on her own terms in Iran and didn't mind what anyone thought. I want to read Only Sound Remains just because I want to see another perspective of her life and make sure this male author hasn't skewed her legacy. Also want to read Edenglassie, which sounds amazing. Hospital too - always eager to read a book by South Asian author who finds herself in another part of the world.

Hey Scott, I don't think "Such is Life" is specifically about Ned Kelly; it's a philosophical novel about a bullock driver by Joseph Furphy. Though to be fair I haven't read it myself.

The only one I’ve read is
    Stone Yard Devotional
I liked it more than you.
Two books read recently that you might like
The Mars House by Natasha Pulley
A Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock ( a version of Frankenstein)
