    What I like about this year’s women’s prize is that we agreed about several of these books. That is an unusual and wondrous occurrence.

      That is unusual! The sign of a good collection of books I would say.

    I'm really looking forward to reading Brotherless Night and quite a few others. I've read 3 books from the prize so far this year and I've enjoyed them all ☺

    I was hoping Brotherless Night would win. I recognize Enter Ghost as a top contender, but I did have trouble connecting with it. I couldn't bring myself to read Soldier Sailor and probably won't read it. I also just finished The Maiden and enjoyed it very much! Will be getting to A Trace of Sun and The Blue Beautiful World later this summer (I have to read the first two books in that sci fi series first). I would have read A Trace of Sun earlier, but ordering it was an issue. The first book I read on the list was And Then She Fell so for I was initially over the moon over it. Then Night Bloom took over, then Dolly Maunder, The Wren the Wren and so on. So was Brotherless Night my favorite because I read it much later in my journey -- I just don't know.

      I would be interested to know when you get to The Blue Beautiful World, if you think reading the earlier books in the series improved your experience or not.
      I love your bookish enthusiasm, sounds like you would have been happy with almost any book winning. I think Brotherless Night is a popular favourite book from the longlist, so it's only 50-50 that it's your love for your most recent read in my mind. ;)

    Agree with your 2 changes. I'm still waiting for several long-listed books to arrive at my library.

    I want to read brotherless night after having seen it win now! Night bloom and soldier sailor are ones I got from the longlist this time around and I need to read them now. And enter ghost is on my wishlist still and I do really want to read at some point (of the titles mentioned, it is the one I want to read the most). While not my favourite selection, it sounds like it was a good one.

    This was my first year following the WP. I absolutely loved every book on the nonfiction shortlist and many on the fiction shortlist. I’ve already started on the long list for each one-so many good reads. Your reviews have been so helpful in choosing which ones I want to tackle.

    I really wanted Enter Ghost to win, but I can live with Brotherless Night. Still sore that And Then She Fell and Ordinary Human Failings didn't make the shortlist though 😅 Everything I have read from the non-fiction list has been great (admittedly I'm only on my 6th book from that list) and I'm planning on reading several more. I think both lists were really strong, but the non-fiction list was astonishing. (Maybe because I read much less non-fiction and had no idea what great narrative non-fiction was available.) Absolutely agree with your changes, and that goes for the Booker too. I'm bracing for that longlist announcement at the end of July containing books not out for another two months 🤪

    @Ihearbooks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Only read a few but Enter Ghost and Ordinary Human Failings were my favorites. Haven't read Brotherless Night yet but plan to as well as Soldier Sailor. Thanks for your thoughts.

    I had a feeling that this was gonna win. In my prediction video, it was basically between this and Enter Ghost. I feel like Brotherless Night had all of the hype going in…and I think I’ve noticed that the Women’s Prize tends to pick the hyped books (Ex: Demon Copperhead). I do think Brotherless Night was very good though and offered a lot of thoughtful commentary on war, extremism, and crimes of war.
    I won’t lie and say that I’m not bummed that Enter Ghost wasn’t picked. I think the WP missed an opportunity to say something about the current state of the world…and I think it not winning was the WP being afraid of being perceived as too overtly political.
    I agree with your thoughts about the Longlist as a whole. There were some really strong picks. Nightbloom, Soldier Sailor, Enter Ghost, And Then She Fell, and Brotherless Night were my favorites. In Defence of The Act, A Trace of Sun, and 8 Lives were all good too. I struggled with Ordinary Human Failings and The Wren The Wren…but I think it’s a me issue. I feel a bit tired of the prose-y, slow, grey-tinged, Irish writing atm. Maybe I’ve just read too many of those types of books in the past year, but I feel like a lot of them are bleeding together for me.
    The nonfiction list looked pretty interesting too. I had hoped How To Say Babylon would win that list, but Doppelganger sounds interesting. I’m hoping to add Thunderclap to the TBR.
    I’ve really enjoyed your thoughts on the WP and enjoyed reading the Longlist for the first time ever. Great job.
    Now on to the bookers! 😅
    Edit: Agreed on your thoughts on changing the rules. I hate the middle books of series choice. And yes to widely available books!
    Not surprised on the stats around reading male vs female.

      ONTO THE BOOKER!
      I haven't touched a book from the non fiction prize yet, I am actually quite interested in a few of them, but haven't been too interested in non fiction for a while.
      I do wonder if that is the reason Enter Ghost didn't win. It's so hard to tell, because if the judges really do like Brotherless Night best, then it wins and if they chicken out it wins also. Regardless, I think it was great that it was on the shortlist.

    Loved this year's longlist, I think the Women's Prize does the best job at promoting accessible and moving stories from a wide range of cultural and personal backgrounds. Brotherless Night was my personal favourite, but I also really liked In Defence of the Act and Ordinary Human Failings. Must read A Trace of Sun soon.

    The stats are so interesting because its the first year where I've been tracking the authors gender and I'm currently at 67% female! 😅 So curious to see at the end of the year which books I tend to like more...

      Ages ago I created a massive spreadsheet and calculated if I preferred books written by men or women, women came out on top, but my reading habits were very different then, I wonder if it would still be the same.

    I’m still shocked Enter Ghost didn’t win. And I’m still v upset that Megan Nolan’s book was left off the short list. That was my winner.

    I’m a man watching this and sad to admit that 30 years ago I probably read 85% male authors - last year I read 70% female and I am heading that way this year - so people can change! And I would add that the best books I have read in ages are by women! Enter Ghost was my pick for this prize but I also really liked In Defence of the Act.

    Thanks Scott for your Women’s Prize Content. I loved Brotherless Night and thought it a great winner. Will you be reading the Booker Prize List? Do you think any if the WP books will make the shortlist?

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will be reading the Booker too. Most of the women's prize books were published to early to be eligible for the women's prize, the exceptions being River East River West, Dolly Maunder and A Trace of Sun, I wouldn't be particularly surprised if any made the booker longlist, however I don't think they will.

    I love my husband, but he will not read from a woman author. He says they can’t write. 🙄🙄. So I completely believe that awful statistic. On a side note, this is now several times I have heard you say you hate magical realism… but loved xxxxxx book. I think you’re coming around! 😂. Summer is going to be the season of magical realism for you!! ❤

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha, you spotted that. I have rules around magical realism and reasons I hate it, if I don't feel like I understand the rules of the world, then I hate it, it its something little like a ghost for example, I'm pretty good with that. I actually really like it as a way to blend spiritual beliefs and mental illness like in Freshwater or And Then She Fell.
      Your husband just need to try more women authors.

    I was not surprised that Brotherless Night won - I thought it was such a brilliant story told through the lens of a young woman (which is rarely done). But like you, all the shortlisted titles were excellent and I could have seen any of them win.

    Thank you for reading the books and always making such interesting videos. I liked the longlist overall, and then my bottom four made the shortlist. I really didn't care for Dolly Maunder, Enter Ghost or Soldier Sailor (Soldier Sailor was this year's worst book for me). The Wren, The Wren was ok but nothing special in terms of the characters. For me, Brotherless Night shows what Enter Ghost could have been but wasn't. I was thrilled it won although my heart was with Western Lane which I just adore.
