    I'm only 23 minutes in, and I perceive you are a great teacher. Thank you! To me, unless I have a teacher, Affinity is a challenge to learn. It's like no other. Open a blank page, with no manual, and begin clicking. 😂 Thank you for this video! My design life just got easier!!!

    Been ages since I watched a video from end to end absolutely glued to the screen. As a person with ADHD I get bored easily and skip or forward the video allmost every video or abandon it altogether. Your video I watched without realising time. You sir deserve my sub more than any person I subbed before.

      Hi Julie, I do not have a video on Bevel/Emboss yet. However, I want to create a video on all the FX (which is where the Bevel option is), so stay tuned :)

    I've been using SketchUp for 3D-design for a couple of years now, but I really wanted to get into 2D as well. Quickly found out that the controls and workflow of SketchUp and Affinity Designer are extremely similar, but I was still missing some basic knowledge. Was, therefore, looking for a beginner, but fast-paced tutorial and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!!

    Wow! You go at a helluva pace! And as I've only opened Designer for the very first time a couple of hours ago, I'm struggling to keep up! ( Being 82 years old might also be a factor!!) But, seriously, you explain everything so well, albeit faster than I'd like, and I'm learning plenty. I'll probably have to watch each section several times to understand everything, but thanks so much for all the time you've invested in making this video. A really great start to my understanding of this programme.

    Trent...again thank you for the detailed instructions you provide. You do a good job - that is what I strive to do in the TH-cam tutorials I do for Woodworking and 3D print making on Lasers, CNCs, and 3D printing. One of the things I focus my channel on helping people with is designing projects to use in each of these efforts. In the past my focus has been primarily on using Vectric vCarve or Aspire, and Lightburn software packages. But, as I purchase files I notice some people appear to use things like Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and other graphics programs for the svg, and other vector files they sell. So this has gotten me more interested in trying to seriously learn Affinity Designer and therefore you see more questions from me in your comments section. Your replies have been helpful and I know how challenging it can be to keep up with comments and provide a thoughtful reply vs. TH-cam's suggested candid response they offer us creators.
    In show of appreciation for the work you have put in and the fact I am asking some pretty detailed question I want to give you a thanks and will use the thanks button to do so. This may not be the best way to do this but it is quick and heartfelt.
    OK now that I bribed you a bit, another specific question. One of the things in designing the projects I do is to have accurate measurements with my designs - for example if I am designing a layout for a cribbage boards, I would want the holw vectors to be be 1/8" in diameter and the width of the board and traks, etc. to be specific measurement parameters to allow the svg or dxf file to be imported into the vectric or laser software at the correct size.
    Do you have a video or series of videos about designing with specific size/dimension parameters and then ensuring my exports remain true to those design parameters? Do you have a website, Patreon, or other way for people to reach out with specific questions?

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @RobSandstromDesigns, thanks for your donation, I appreciate it! And best of luck with your channel. Handmade crafting is something that is constantly on my to-do list, especially with resin. I just need to sit down and finally do it. I don't know a lot about lasers, CNC, and 3D printing, but it doesn't surprise me that many people would use common programs like Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer. Probably if you can unite those topics (laser/wood with common software), you'll find a dedicated audience.
      As for your question, typically vectors are designed to be independent of size. My understanding is that when you import them into your tool's software, that is the stage where you specify the actual physical size. To keep things straight in your head when designing, you can specify the size in inches in Affinity Designer when you create a shape. Example: a circle that is 2" in diameter next to a square that is 1". This will allow you to set the relative size of things. However, I don't think the actual physical units of "inches" will be stored with the file when you export it. My guess is that you will need to re-specify the overall size of the design when you import it into your cutting/laser software. Let me know how it goes!
      As for contacting me, currently TH-cam comments or email (shown on my channel banner) is the best way.
      Have a great weekend!
      Trent

    I really enjoyed this. It's not going to make someone a pro in 2 hours but once you're done this, you'll understand any other tutorials you run across to learn techniques.
    There's a few chapters I'm going to need to watch again to solidify a couple things but I'm definitely feeling more comfortable with the software. I guess next will be some early color theory and figure out how to go about animating these things.
    Thanks for throwing this out here. It's helped people.

      @@TechnicallyTrent , so far so bad 😂😂. Typography is something I would like to make my niche, I have wondered through programmes such as Kittl, They're brilliant it does most for you, but they become a dime a dozen and there is no way to manipulate to your own unique style. Could you recommend some beneficial videos for a beginner wanting to focus on typography in Affinity please?

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For typography, I just released a video on the Artistic Text tool:
      th-cam.com/video/iTqPvYfKNEE/w-d-xo.html
      I will be releasing a video on the Frame Text tool in a few days. I focus more on how the tools work than actual typography concepts. But I do want to create a general Typography 101 video about how type can be used with graphic design. Stay tuned!

    I just came into design thing and tried almost all the popular vector graphic software, and affinity is the best looking interface lol. It's super nice to see, easy and the best, snapping also the best among all popular vector software. It's just that, no bitmap trace. I wish that they make the bitmap tracing that is equal to power trace in coreldraw, because I find it the best bitmap tracing among all vector graphic software. They also need to make the capability of exporting to illustrator file.

    Best instruction video I've seen in a long time. Wish I'd seen this a month ago when I started my journey. Would like to see a video that could help importing jpg black and white line art into AD and then how best to create Celtic Knots, from simple Trinity to complex designs. So many options and hard to tell which is the best; pen tool or shapes, when to add or subtract, or when to use Shape Builder or compounds. No one addresses these as they don't involve many of the graphic tools that AD offers. But, still you clarified so much in the crash course.

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the comment, @jacisiehl5002! Yes, black and white raster lineart provides a particular challenge. One thing you can try is converting it to vector with Creative Fabrica's free tool. The results can be hit or miss, but it is worth a shot:
      www.creativefabrica.com/features/vectorize-image/ref/2746202/
      I show how to use it, along with coloring line art with Vector Fill and raster painting, in this video:

    Excellent video tutorial. Way too much for me to absorb at this tie but it gave me an awesome overview and a place to come back to. I have avoided getting into Affinity software suite even though I have had it for many years - learning curve too high for me - but your videos are helping. Now that I am getting into 3D printing and Laser Engraving I am finding the ability to manipulate svgs and images much more important.

    Brilliant tutorial, extremely helpful! Thank you very much for sharing your experience. As others have said, you're an excellent teacher. I was quite unaware of all that Designer could do, as many of the tools remained mysterious even after a few trial-and-error runs.

    The colour picker has also become my favourite tool, I can just simple snap Affinity designer 2 the side of my screen. Have say a web search of images of background images snapped on the other side for inspiration. I can simply go over to my browser window and pick a colour that I like and then use it on the random design I'm working on to get the hang of Affinity designer 2. Loving this very thorough tutorial so far. Learnt alot already.

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I love how pretty much every color UI in Affinity Designer has the color picker. It is very convenient and I find it so frustrating to use other programs that are missing that feature. Thanks for watching!

      @@TechnicallyTrent Same here, goes to show the developers have actually used the programme themselves. Oh boy, that's a good point 🤣 copying an image into the program i.e. using paint (since everyone has paint to use as a comparison) using the snipping tool just to extract a colour no longer feels adequate lol. Thanks for making such an indepth tutorial, have shared it with friends and family.

    Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! I've learned so much, and it's really helped me on my journey to learning graphic design. I wanted to find a good software that could be an alternative to Adobe since I can't afford the subscription, and your tutorial has helped me settle on Affinity. I'm excited to dive in and start creating, thanks to you! 😊 Thanks a lot for all the valuable info and guidance!

    Thank you, I’ve never used a programme like this before am looking forward to learning…one thing I would love to do but am having problems with is adding text to a spiral. I have been playing all day with no luck, now to look at your other vids to see if there is anything on one of these.

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @corinnecollins, thanks for watching!
      I have a video for putting text on paths (and circles) here:
      th-cam.com/video/u7oHYMoMgTo/w-d-xo.html
      I think I made that video before the Spiral tool existed, but the technique will work with Spirals as well. First make a spiral with the Spiral Tool. And then with your spiral selected, select the Artistic Text tool and hover over part of the spiral. You'll see your cursor change to indicate that you can start typing. Hope this helps!
