    I have a question about masking and drop shadows. For the past 20 years I’ve been outlining the object, dropping the background, and adding a fake shadow. Recently I’ve been searching better ways and maintain the natural shadow all the while removing the background. IE: A bottle shot on a white background. When I place the image over a white background and apply MULTIPLY the results look great. However, is there a way to get this same result on a colored background ? When I do the above with the MULTIPLY on the image over a colored background, the subject changes color. Thanks

    Thanks for the live stream. Even though I know a lot of things now, there are always techniques that I have forgotten or perhaps simply didn't understand properly, which are explained. I've had a long break from LUTs and have now discovered them again. I have no problem working with them and no problem creating them either. But I haven't figured out how exactly they work. Even the name "Look-Up Table" makes no sense to me. Maybe that would also be a topic.

    Can you take a mask that was made in affinity photo and make new mask in affinity designer and make a shape with it

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @BettyMullins, thanks for the question! You can copy-and-paste a mask from Affinity Photo and use it in Affinity Designer. However, I don't know of a way to convert an Affinity Photo mask to a vector shape. The masks in Affinity Photo are raster-based (in other words, grids of pixels). Affinity does not have any way of converting raster images to vectors. You could try using some 3rd party app to convert your mask image to a vector, and then import it into Affinity Designer. Creative Fabrica has a free image-to-vector tool you could try, although I haven't used it for this purpose before: www.creativefabrica.com/studio/features/vectorize-image/ref/2746202/ Hope this helps! - Trent

    Morning Trent. Which do you like better Design or Photo? Is there one better at one task than the other. I was doing some design in Photo yesterday, making up cover photo and art work for it, a 2nd screen shot insert, 3d text, beveling, that kinda stuff.

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @GoFasterHD, personally I prefer Designer. I work more with vectors and text, and I also LOVE Designer's ability to put elements off of the canvas so I can view them on the side. I don't actually do that much photo manipulation beyond the basic HSL/Curve/Vibrance adjustments. But there have been a few times where I had photos in RAW that I needed to convert in Affinity Photo. And it does have some of the more sophisticated raster operations. Hope this helps! Trent

    Dear Trent. I'm studying biology and Affinity Designer was recommended to me by a lecturer. I was able to learn a lot of basics through your tutorial, but unfortunately I keep failing because of one problem. When I try to draw a lipid membrane I do the following: (www.u-helmich.de/bio/cytologie/02/021/Lipide/bilder/Membranlipide-01.jpg ; reference) - First I create a circle with radial gradient - After that I create a tail with a slight bend - I'll duplicate this one and paste it next to the other one - I group the circle and the two tails into a "phospholipid" group - I duplicate this group and flip it vertically - I group these two phospholipids again, select them and save the selection as a PNG -Now I add a new "textured image brush" based on the PNG. - I change the mode from Streched to Repeat. If I now create a straight line and use the brush on it, everything is fine, I can change the size etc. But as soon as I make rounds/shapes with twists, the size is distorted, especially the circles. I've tried to change something at many levels of regulation, but unfortunately I haven't come to any conclusion. Unfortunately, I can't find many tutorials on explicit scientific drawings for Affinity Designers either. Do you have any idea how I can create a kind of "Vector Brush" that is an actual vector? The scaling should not be distorted. Kind regards and thank you for your great videos!

    • @TechnicallyTrent
      @TechnicallyTrent 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi @yodaghost9116, thanks for your question! Sorry for the delay in answering...TH-cam didn't notify me of it for some reason. Unfortunately, Affinity doesn't have true vector brushes yet. What they call "vector brushes" still require a bitmap source, and as you can see, it may result in distortions when bending and twisting. I do have a video on vector brushes that may provide some guidance, but it has long been a missing feature of Affinity: th-cam.com/video/O22G_dI9diM/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps!

    I think Average blend mode does some addition|subtraction, because when you use it on three layers it looks like 33% which, yeah, you can do with Opacity but it does it for you. & it doesn't make the layers semitransparent like opacity. I like it for mild desaturation.

    I have a lot of assets in version 1, but they didn't transfer to version 2. It's a shame that v2 (mac) doesn't have the option to load settings, assets, brusher, etc... there's no point in writing the settings of tools and panels. Version 1 is still faster anyway, has a much nicer GUI, normal icons in the tools (the coloring pages from version 2 are all the same).

    A few small tips to people who use Designer/Publisher. You can save Symbols in the Assets panel. You can also do layer stacks of anything like filters, layer hierarchies etc. and make a Group which can then be saved as an Asset. Those can then be converted to bitmap fills by dragging an Asset into the top toolbar fill slots for any vector shape.

    Puoi trascinare anche l'intera cartella che contiene gli asset che vuoi inserire

    I recently purchased the Affinity suite during the spring sale. I have a ton of "assets" in the form of Inkscape symbol files and was wondering how I could bring them over into Affinity. Thanks for the video.

      Hi @CelticOneDesign! Is there a way you can easily export all the Inkscape assets to a standard format (png, svg)? If so, you could try that and then do the import method I show in the video. Let me know if this works!

      @@TechnicallyTrent I played around with AD when I first bought it and I can simply open the Inkscape documents directly then save as AD files. When I get a chance I want to explore AD more, so I don't make the same mistakes (and still make!) I did with Inkscape. Not sure if you are familiar with Inkscape and the resource library they have at their website but I have a "Celtic Knotwork Construction Kit" in their symbol library there. That is what I want to eventually port over to AD as assets. I am gearing the resource mainly for crafter/makers. Time! Never enough of it!

      @@jktolford8272 doing lots of rework on it now. Many of the sample files were actually imported in from the original collection created by Geodraw 20+ years ago. Those older samples have been giving me issues in Fusion 360.

      Hi @omarkhalednunes1760, that shape will look like the last shape you selected. For you, it will probably show Rounded Rectangle by default. If you click on that, in the shape dropdown, you should see the star. Hope this helps!
