I use tow bar bike carrier, the good thing is it can be unlocked to pull forwards with bikes attached for access into boot of car. It is secure so going over bumps does not cause it to move around.
Is there a make that stands out for you? We’ve got a very good towbar on my wife’s small Rangerover. I paid for it to be added because I occasionally tow a motorcycle trailer. I’ve convinced her to leave it mounted permanently although it’s removable, on grounds that it will properly punish anyone who runs into the back of her 😮 I like the idea of a two adult bicycle carrier. My motorcycle trailer is great for carrying two full dress bikes. It’d look silly with a couple of cycles on it!
I have the previous Halfords bike rack with 6 mounting points. And the other week I nearly got rid of it; I'm so glad I watched this review. A review that reviews how good my current bike rack is. Great work Geoff.
I had a similar Halfords rack a few years ago. It worked the opposite way... the hooks were on the top of the tailgate, and the plastic "tubes" were on the bottom. So after initial adjustment, just hook on the top, put the "tubes" in the boot, close lid, and pull the bottom straps taut . With initial adjustment, fitted fine on saloons, hatchbacks and even an MX5, and reg plate was visible.
Rear hatches/hinges aren't designed to take the weight of two bikes. Also you then need another number plate and lights to stay legal. Tow bar mounted bike carrier or a trailer or roof bar mounted bike clamps are only safe options.
Be prepared for damage to your car using these. Also the bikes seem low, do they partially cover the number plate? The Police can get uppity about that. I’d take it back to Halfords and say its not suitable for purpose. A towbar one would be better for you, lifting bikes off car roofs isn’t that easy if you’re not too tall.
Tow Bar rack on the Volvo , no problem with low bridges or car parks and cheaper on the Ferry. Thule make good ones or just buy a van Geoff ! Watch out for the exhaust melting your bike tyres. I bet more than three people made it to the end. I’ve got a seventeen foot canoe in the garden, looking forward to seeing you getting that lot on the 850
Subscribed, and I don't even have a Volvo!... but I do have a 1968 Series 2A Landrover. Just taxed it for the year, £0 Same money I paid for the MOT :) I love classic vehicles.
Love it. My old motorcycles were rebuilt and maintained by me. The MOT tester knew each of them and said they were among the easiest to test, because everything was more than good enough. I believe it was 2017 that my bikes became MOT and road tax exempt. The cost savings cover the costs of insuring my bikes and my car! A very rare example of getting ahead.
I've always been with you on not believing in sunscreen, but when anyone questions why I've never had a real argument other than I just don't like not getting a good tan. Can you do a video on it? 😂
Eat a proper human, meat based, diet and you can live in the sun like we are designed to. The sun doesn’t cause cancer - Dr Hamer’s work - German New Medicine - proves that cancer isn’t remotely as we are told. Question Everything.
Pendle rack on a tow bar or thule, Thule also make great roof racks. Ever since 2000 ish that's all I've used, can't beat solid fixtures/ mount point, fasten & forget 👌
Haha this is how I ended up with a crewcab transit 😂😂 I had that exact rack on my old Ford CMax, it was so much faff loading and offloading, and driving was terrifying knowing the bikes were basically being held on with 4 teeny straps. I wouldn't have my bikes on the roof cause I know I'd forget and crunch them all on a barrier. A tow bar rack, (Thule is often recommended) where the bikes are all sat properly would be the answer for anything more than 3 bikes. Look forward to seeing you all on the trails!
also, I knew you were going to talk about the sunscreen song. And take that rack back for a refund; they are not fit for purpose and have caused many a bike enthusiast to just stop riding. Looking forward to seeing the new Funky Phil one!
That piece of plastic deformed quite well, years ago Halfords tried selling me one of those racks and it kept falling off. I ended up getting a tow ball fitted and got a rack that mounted on it. I have since changed car but can still use the rack
I have one of these, and just took my old T25 all the way to Tenerife and back without any dramas. I can safely say that the rack just about works but is basically crap. I gave up using those plastic dumbell things because they compress the rubber seal around the tailgate and let water in. I switched the straps around and used the ones with the flat hooky things instead. (Use a bit of gaffer tape to line the hook to protect the paintwork.) My van has a metal bumper, easy enough to use the ordinary metal hooks there, and this arrangement holds the rack in position easily. No side to side movement. So if you don't need to open the tailgate and don't mind your bikes obscuring number plates and lights then you're fine. So long as the cops don't object. I did realise that if anyone wants to steal my bike, chaining it to the rack won't help. You can literally loosen the straps and just lift the whole thing off in one go, hang it off the back of the thiefmobile and away you go. Those plastic dumbells do at least make this a bit less easy, but then normal car use gets harder!
Had every type of bike rack..on various cars.. like you say Geoff they are certainly not great these days..more plastic than anything. We had one loosen on the M25 when it was on the roof type. The days of using the old baby mirror to see the bikes up there and not the child. The trailer one i think is easier for putting the bikes on. I think getting something adapted for ya is a safer option.
Would it work if you put a flat steel bar behind the number plate, with enough of it protruding either side, and bent to shape, to give you 2 lower mounting points? It would probably need a length of steel or wood at the back of the bumper to make it more solid.
Definetly a refund. Looked at these a while back and decided to visit a wrecker and get a genuine towbar for my mondeo mk4. Fitting was straightforward but working out how to programme Forscan to recognise the towbar took a bit of figuring so the reversing sensors worked and power was extended from the parking assist module to the tow socket and it all worked.
Just joined this channel , didn't know you had it, glad you are re visiting it with fun stuff ( the 4 f's)😊 Made it to the end😊 love the Volvo sketch, did you d it Geoff ? Take it back Geoff , get your money back 😊 Two bikes in volvo boot, two bikes on roof rack of volvo 😊
I’ve never seen this kind of bike rack thing. I’ve always thought it was either the hitch ball mount or roof rack type. Anyway I have no other choice but to suggest Thule … since they’re 🇸🇪 and I’m 🇳🇴! I have only seen quality products from them. I made it to the end of the video. Did someone make it to the bottom of my comment??😂
These racks are not the best, the fitting is reliant on the straps which can be a weak point. Bite the bullet, get a tow bar and a Thule rack, worth every penny. I’d heavily advise against roof mounted ones as you will forget the bikes and try and enter a height restriction!!!!! Trailer mounted rack is also a good option. I prefer to have the bikes behind me (well I have a van now 😉) as you have the benefit of being able to see them in your mirrors.
Those tailgate racks aren't great. Plus you really need a light board to be legal. The best solution is tow bar mounted, if thats not an option then roof mounted.
Couldn't you move the rack up a bit and attach it under the boot and on top of the boot and the sides, then you can open the boot . So the top mounting points would be just below the back window.
Thule are by far the best both roof and towbar mounted. Mrs Geoff could get them on the roof it easy. The towbar mounted racks move out of the way so you can open the boot... Job done..
Re opened this video and most of my suggested feed is various bike racks. My days of that are way gone. Grafton Water and Rutland are both good places as long as you like long rides. Neither are that near you unfortunately.
3:18 ''please comment on what I should do'' Get a refund, put the bikes in the Volvo's boot. Fun fact, if you post a bad review on Halfords website, it will not get published - they only accept 5 stars feedback....
Jeev ... I did my back in trying to fit a rack similar to this to my V40. It was like the worst rubix cube in the world to work out. It almost smashed the hatchback windscreen when setting the arms.......nightmare
Trailer all the way....multipurpose when not using bikes, use for taking crap to tip, etc get even more adventurous make summink to attach to enclose it for kids to sleep in and you and Mrs Geoff can sleep on inflatable in back of car if weather is too windy to pitch tent when you arrive at destination...etcetcetc....
I have a tow bar mounted one I haven't got to test yet as the car with the bar got rejected. It clamps to the ball and I can't work out how it won't just swing everywhere.

Welcome everyone, it's me, over here too! Do hit subscribe. And if ever I go missing... haha.
Halfords selling junk is nothing new, go thule or Paddy Hopkirk 🙄 🤔
Don't say that mate! 😢
All of us would turn detective for you anyway and get you back 👍
I made it to the end, and you know who else should? The manager at Halfords, get yourself a refund, fella!!
Congratulations on the new channel Geoff. I've had those rear door racks in the past... Once you go 'tow bar' rack there's no going back.
I've gone trailer. arriving any minute.
We have a rack that clamps to a tow ball, it’s brilliant if you have a tow bar

I use tow bar bike carrier, the good thing is it can be unlocked to pull forwards with bikes attached for access into boot of car. It is secure so going over bumps does not cause it to move around.
Got to the end of the video Geoff. Good video too. That bike rack needed hooks for sure.
I made it to the end of the video, I always do, congrats on the new channel.
Have a look at these Thule 995001 OutWay Hanging 3-bike hanging trunk bike rack
You can open the boot with it in place
My experience with bike racks.... Thule tow bar mounted. No straps damaging the paint.. no struggles getting them on the roof....
I have used roof mounted and tow Ball mounted racks, I would go every time for a Tow Ball rack as its easier to get the bikes on and can take 4 bikes.
Is there a make that stands out for you?
We’ve got a very good towbar on my wife’s small Rangerover. I paid for it to be added because I occasionally tow a motorcycle trailer. I’ve convinced her to leave it mounted permanently although it’s removable, on grounds that it will properly punish anyone who runs into the back of her 😮
I like the idea of a two adult bicycle carrier.

so gone from using a proper bracket to a dodgy plastic thinger ma giggy bit of tubing so much for reducing plastic !
Rear hatches/hinges aren't designed to take the weight of two bikes. Also you then need another number plate and lights to stay legal.
Tow bar mounted bike carrier or a trailer or roof bar mounted bike clamps are only safe options.
To the end Geoff 😮 Of course I have twice. Never start what you can't finish. My motto. Till the next one 👍
I had one of these nearly 15 years ago. It was crap then. Great for paint scars
What a great video and I did make it to the end Geoff. Well done on the new channel and I think you need a roof bike rack. 😃👍
Be prepared for damage to your car using these.

A towbar one would be better for you, lifting bikes off car roofs isn’t that easy if you’re not too tall.
They do this after very little use too. They're shite really.
I got a quote for a tow bar, £460, so I found one online for £1550 instead. Unfortunately it's attached to a car so I bought the lot...
@@GeoffBuysCarsThule towbar bike rack. Expensive but they just work. 👍

I've always wanted a pick up truck but always wondered... what would I pick up ? 🤔😆
Trailer with bike rack on the trialer and the clothes can go in the boot of the volvo
Tow bar mount
Yess! Brilliant stuff! Another amazing Geoff channel!
Much appreciated Geoff!
Tow bar on the Volvo, get a tilting bike rack. Best defence against people parking too close behind as well 😅
Watched it all Geoff. I like the sketch of the volvo and roof bikes 👍🏻😁
You need to mount the bike rack a bit higher up on the BMW. Try aiming around the rear wiper.
Would it work if you put a flat steel bar behind the number plate, with enough of it protruding either side, and bent to shape, to give you 2 lower mounting points?
It would probably need a length of steel or wood at the back of the bumper to make it more solid.
Always make it to the end of your vids! I like your new channel, less debatable content…
Go for the towbay solution. Easy to put bikes on and off, and you are able to open the boot aswell. Just need a towbar for both cars......

I used to have a great bike rack fitted to the tailgate of my old 850 T5 (many moons ago), but if IRRC it was a "genuine Volvo accessory".
Made it to the end , thanks Geoff 😁
How did a "How To" video go so sideways so fast?
All I am going to remember is Strap-Ons & Fingering. LOL

"The obvious solution here is don't have children but it's a bit late for that" 😂😂😂 painfully true
You need a pick up truck with a tailgate bike pad.
Will you do a video on "Strap Ons" Geoff
Roof and towbar rack.
How about a bike trailer for the volvo
We've tried the roof mounted bike racks and ended up with a shoulder Injury from lifting the bikes up.
I have a tow bar mounted one I haven't got to test yet as the car with the bar got rejected. It clamps to the ball and I can't work out how it won't just swing everywhere.
this is my thinking too... I don't understand the physics of it
Yippeeee more of Geoff, can't be bad.
Should have called the channel daddy issues.
Seen plenty like that fail badly

A 4 bike rack to the towbar mout correct.

Nice woods..

Roof racks for bikes are very popular with tourists in Wales. We have a lot of serious lycra louts here for their R&R
lycra louts hahaha
Here because of Geofbuyscars.
Buy Mrs Geoff a volvo 850....or put the towing hook in for the BMW and secure to that
Looks like you also need a trailer board.
New sub Geoff, looking forward to a 2nd channels content.
thank you! I wanted somewhere for light hearted content, hoping to drop bits onto this channel as and when we go along :)

Were you born and raised in Yorkshire🏆 then Geoff?
Had a Mk2 Capri, bought a bicycle, got it in the backseat.
Had to take the front wheel off to get it out.
The girlfriend was much easier to deal with.
I watched till the end
Those hatchback mounted bike racks are ridiculous!!!! Get a towbar mounted one!!!
