This crew deserves another film or two to wrap things up, but with more sober writing and directing. The cast is phenomenal and are young enough to give us a lot of great adventures. The studio needs to get its head out of its ass.

At 33:48 that group photo is the original cast of the TV series and then original motion pictures, all with the same character names as this trilogy. As you mentioned to note Leonard Nimoy is in that shot as Mr. Spock, seated is Capt. James Kirk played by William Shatner.
Those movies are worth watching in order to see where the characters and personalities originated from, It's brilliant how the new actors carried on those personalities created by Gene Rodenbery and that cast from the 1960s TV series through the motion picture era.

I do hope you watched the credits for the dedications to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Nimoy passed before the film was written, so the loving goodbye to him was written into the script. However, Yelchin died about a month before _Beyond's_ release date. I was happy they got something into the credits for Anton.
They tried to get a fourth film with this cast done. From what I've gleaned, it would've been a time travel movie where Kirk would go back and meet his father, but they could never secure all the lead actors (including Chris Hemsworth). It may happen, but I'm not holding my breath. There is a way they could write around Yelchin's death that's part of Trek canon.

Edison comes from a military background. He was MACOs, Military Assault Command Operations. Basically special forces. When Starfleet was created, there was no longer a need for them, Starfleet being a peacekeeping institution. (Now some may bring up Section 31, but that's whole other ball of wax.) He basically wanted to bring things back to how they were pre-Starfleet, to what he knows best. War. He's a soldier. He mentions the Xindi. This is a direct tie to the series Star Trek: Enterprise, where they go into Xindi territory with a squad of MACOs.

I know there are quite a few of them but at some point you should make your way through the older movies you could start with the first but I suggest starting with the wrath of khan which is the second one that the second of these movies paralleled, I would love for you to watch Star Trek: generations as well but that might require a few of the original Kirk movies and atleast one of the Next generation(the second Star Trek show) movies to get the full weight.
    Recommended movies
Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan
    3
    Star Trek 4: undiscovered country
    Star Trek: First contact
(This technically came after generations but it won’t spoil anything and it’s the best movie to get to know the new characters)
    Star Trek: Generations
All of these take place in the timeline that old Spock was from before Romulus was destroyed

You really have to watch the older films Star Trek 1 - 10. The first is by today's standards a little slow and you have to take into account that a lot of it was done before CGI (although I prefer "real" starship models) but there is a lot of good stuff waiting for you. 👍
