"The Last Samurai" Tom Cruise acting at his best, playing a drunk trying to forget his past, with a long story of coming to understand your enemies ( Ken Watanabe ) enough to become one with them and to fall n love with the culture and a special Widow. The chemistry was so complex in this movie! She had a feeling that he was falling in love with her and she knew that it was extremely hard for him to watch her die day after day. She too had to endure the pain of watching her boyfriend die over 300 times. Even tho they would technically only meet for 1 day, she found herself telling him personal things about her life, and the next day they would meet she found out she had told them these things. It kind of told her future self that this is a good man, a man she trust, and a man that is worth spending endless days with.

It's quick so most reviewers miss it:
They explain why they throw him in battle so quickly - the full metal b kicked all the alien asses in the last battle using these new exoskeletons with virtually no training. They think it's because the exos are so good but it's because she actually trained the same way he does.

The look the sergeant gives Cage after the helicopter incident always gives me chills. When he looks Cage in the eyes he recognizes a veteran of hundreds of battles, someone who has lost so much. As it was mentioned earlier that the story is based on a short manga called "All You Need is Kill" ... but what no one has seemed to mentioned is that the inspiration for the manga was the author was playing a rpg video game, kept receiving praise from npcs about how smart or brave he was, and that got him to reflect that the only reason he got good was the multiple times he would die, he would learn what NOT to do ...

Unless all you're looking for is cannon fodder, it behooves the military to provide at least a tiny bit of training to its troops.

So the reason why that last mission went so relatively well as compared to the beach was the fact that it was the first time it was being performed period. It was the first time for the humans, but it was also the first time for the Mimics. They were ready for the beach and they were ready for the route to the location of the false vision where they were setting up that trap, but they were not ready for the location of the Omega to come under assault. In every other time jump that place remained secured and undiscovered, so when Cruise and his Dirty Dozen the Mimics were at square one without a strategy guide or aim-bot to help them win while Cruise at least knew where the Omega was camping out at.
Also you were right about the difference between the previous leaps and the last. In the previous ones Cruise had the blood of the Alpha in him, and the Alpha's deaths are what triggered the Onega's ability to reset the leap to the moment it chose. But after Cruise got the Onega's blood in him he was able to pick the moment, hence the new beginning.

Everything you said is right except that fact that Cage got to “choose” the moment. According to timeline Cage defeated the omega before he actually dies for the first time in the movie (time difference of some hours, i dont know the exact time difference) so it simply puts him back by that much time difference back and therefore he ends up before he actually met the general

In the film yes, but in reality they weighed 80 lbs (for Emily's) or over a 100 lbs (for Toms) (according to interviews) as you saw when he was trying to run away in one at the start. So, the exoskeletons they were running full-pelt in had to be non-metallic or CGI'd in reality (while in the film would have represented the fact that they knew how to operate them with maximum efficiency).

Whenever an Alpha dies, it resets back the day by 24 hrs. When Cage dies the first time in the battlefield, it's around late morning/midday. That's why whenever he wakes up (to the day when he was detained to the army), its on the same time, i.e., late morning/mid-day (earlier in the morning he has the meeting with the General).
In the final act, when they kill the Omega, it's just before the Dawn in Paris (of the OG battleday). But since, Cage again gets the blood of the Alpha, he resets by 24 hours. But 24-hours before, he was enroute to visit the General, in London. That's why when he wakes up in the helicopter (which amazingly is his first scene in the movie too), it's already early morning in London, and still dawning at Paris.
Also, the victory takes place despite the fact that they have gone back in time is because THIS time, the Omega isn't alive and so aren't the mimics. Only Cage has that power in the world ❤️

Great reaction! It's an interesting relationship dynamic at the end: Cage loves Rita, but he's a total stranger to her. He can explain that he's known her for a long time, and demonstrate that he knows lots of details about her life, but she has no feelings for him at all. At least she can understand what happened because she once had the Alpha power, but rational understanding is not emotional attachment. In fact, her emotional attachment is to the guy she saw die hundreds of times when she had the power. What makes the situation even more complex is that the war is over. People can form quick attachments in the midst of a war due to the constant emotional strain, but it can be quite different in peacetime. Rita needed Cage when the war was going on because he was the only way she could get to the Omega--will she give him a chance now that the war is over?

The reason Cage went back to an earlier time when he died the last time was because he killed the Omega earlier in the day, before the invasion, therefore he ended up in the helicopter before his meeting with the General. The Omega controls the Mimics no matter where or _when_ they are which is why when the Omega was killed all of the Mimics died even though time was reverted backwards 24 hours. It's a little tricky to wrap your brain around but it makes sense if you really think about it.

A lot of people aren't huge fans of Tom Cruise, so you're not alone. As a person, I disagree with him ideologically with his religion & his politics. But as an actor, I completely respect that the man does his own stunts. You'll only realize just to what extreme extent if you did watch the Mission: Impossible films. I do enjoy those films. There are many.
The 007 James Bond franchise typically has the reputation for some of the most extreme stunts ever. But many would argue that Tom Cruise has done just as well, if not more, being just one individual.
If you do choose to watch more Tom Cruise, I highly recommend watching Top Gun and then his very recent sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Maverick is one of Tom's greatest performances 👏, in my opinion. But you gotta watch his 1986 Top Gun movie first before you get to Maverick for necessary context. My opinion. -OG

I get the impression if Cage had gone along with his orders in the first place, he would've dropped in with a protection detail, considering he's filming the war for the people. But that demotion and sending him into combat with no training was a result of him trying to blackmail the general, at the moment of the crime his commanding officer. I imagine him having no combat training whatsoever is meant to indicate that Cage managed to weasel his way into a cushy military post.

Not sure if someone’s already said this in the comments. After the omega’s killed, he’s goes back 24 hours from that point, which happens to be when he’s on the helicopter just before he lands.

They probably wouldn't even be able to move at all if it were up to their own physicality to move in that armor. I'm pretty sure it has to be turned on to give them the ease of fluidity of movement.
It reminds me a little of the armor the soldiers wore in the Avatar movie. I don't know about the second Avatar movie as I haven'tseen it yet. -OG

What really interested me about this film is that it combined the source material it was based on (the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill) with the World War II operation it also served to commemorate (the D-Day landings). It was even released on the 70th anniversary of those landings.

No, killing the omega didn't let him choose the day.
    It's always back 24 hours.
But this time he didn't land on the beach and fight - he got those guys and they left in the early morning BEFORE the beach raid.
So he died soon after that - it was still the morning of the previous day.

This isn't a Tom Cruise movie. It's an Emily Blunt movie.
But on a serious note. "Vanilla sky" is very very good. I felt it in my head and body the day after watching it.

  • @wirebrushproductions1001

The suits weight 80 to 100 pounds. Emily Blunt actually cried when she tried one on for the first time. Tom Cruise inspired her with "Don't be a pussy."
During action scenes Cruise and Blunt are both suspended from trolley wires, which take up lot of the weight.

I knew you would really like this, you exceeded my expectations. 😉 Groundhog day on steroids, both lead women were named "Rita" (I think that was a nod to Groundhog Day). I too was NOT a Tom Cruise fan until this movie, I can't imagine anyone else pulling off his transformation to a bad ass soldier.👍👍
