The brilliance of the Kirk / Spock relationship is
that they are opposites that balance each other out. While both are highly intelligent, kirk is too reckless, and Spock is too logical and reserved.
However, they come to realize they work
incredibly well as a team because each one
reigns in the extremes of the other, creating a much smarter middle path.

If you want more backstory on Khan, watch the original series episode "Space Seed" followed by movies 2-3 ("Wrath of Khan" and "Search for Spock"). Technically the story also continues into the 4th movie, but it's more loosely connected as it's a new plot. Generally Wrath of Khan is regarded as the best of all the Star Trek movies.

There was an actual reason for that 10 minute death scene for Kirk, but you have to watch the original movies to understand it. Some of the episodes of the original series are a bit problematic and even borderline campy, but the human stories, the relationships between members of the crew, are what make the series so great.

    • @psychokitty71

@@TahiriVeila13ABY When I said that it was "a bit problematic" I was thinking of things like the way the women were portrayed in the series. As not much more than decorations, with very short skirts. The more recent Star Trek series show women in a much more positive light. I just didn't want someone to go from the much more modern movie to the original series and expect something as modern as the movie.

Actually, what escapes a lot of people's notice is all three of the Kelvin Star Trek Movies mirrored their counterparts in the Prime Timeline. In the first movies, the Enterprise has to stop a massive unknown ship from destroying Earth, and is the only ship able to do so. In the second ones, they must battle a captured Federation starship and, defeat Khan, and face the death of a friend. In the third, the crew dock at the starbase that is a symbol of the Federation, and...well, that would be spoilers. The path of the Kelvin universe is different, yet parallel to the one we saw first.

That's actually a big part of what drew me OUT of this movie. Into Darkness is a hot mess of a film - good set pieces but overall so disjointed as to verge on incoherency. The 2009 Trek had flaws, of course, but was light years better than this one with the 3rd in the reboot series (ST: Beyond) splitting the difference, as far as I'm concerned.

Something my grandpa told me so don't know if it's true or not. But he said in the show or movie Spock made the logical choice and went into the radiation room to save the ship and Kirk fought Khan to bring Spock back to life. So they swapped roles in this movie. Hence in the death scene they talk about how Kirk made the logical choice and Spock made a rational choice (the torpedoes). Basically Spock coming back in time changed destinies like said in the first movie. Kirk's Dad is alive in Old Spock's timeline but now in this timeline he's dead.

Watching this movie made me realize just how far they were taking the "alternate timeline" trope. It's a "multiverse" of the Star Trek universe, which makes using Cumberbatch even more ironic. A very particular scene is the reverse of one in the Wrath of Khan, and I was blown away when I first saw that scene. I think it actually made my dad angry, since he's such a fan of the originals. I thought it was genius.

Without giving away spoilers, let's just say that the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) has been the lead ship of Star Trek since filming of the first television pilot in 1964 through two TV series, the first live-action one in the '60s and the first animated one in the '70s, to the first motion picture in 1979 and beyond. It is also now the lead ship of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the new TV series now completing its second season after the ship also appeared as a guest star in the first and second seasons of Star Trek: Discovery in 2018 and 2019. More than the Millennium Falcon by a light-year, the Starship Enterprise is the most iconic ship in all of movie and television science-fiction (and is name-dropped in countless other franchises, including Stargate).
No, as you talked over the entire explanation, they took the Enterprise away and sent Kirk back to finish his academy degree because of saving that planet's civilization from the volcano and revealing their existence to primitive people when doing so. Starfleet is forbidden by General Order One (the Prime Directive) from interfering in any way with pre-warp civilizations.
This film was a bad remake of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), adjusted for the new Kelvin timeline created by Nero, and the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch is _extremely_ *problematic* because the new director cast a very pale white man with a British accent to play a character that is supposed to be a brown-skinned Sikh man with a Punjabi accent of Indian nationality. That practice is pejoratively known as "whitewashing." (The new director also screwed with and screwed up the uniforms, insignia, and hand props, but that's a whole other complaint.) At least the original Khan was played by a Latino actor with an English-as-a-second-language accent wearing swarthy makeup. (And yes, putting swarthy makeup on Cumberbatch would have made things even worse!)

What the Klingons boil down to: in the original series, the Klingons were the Soviets and the Federation was (an idealised) America. The chance of a devastating war breaking out was always on people's minds. The first guy to catch COVID did it around 4 years ago, and about 4 years before the first Trek episode aired, the Cuban Missile Crisis was happening. The first episode aired 6 weeks after England won the World Cup, and there were nearly half a million US troops in Vietnam (not suggesting any causal relationships here; no reason to go starting a war to try and help football come home).

You can really see it in his actions and the acting. Chris Pine did that role excellently, you can really see and feel the development throughout the film.

This movie has one of my favorite fakeout deaths. I just love how spock completely loses it when kirk dies and he only calms down once he knows there's a way to save him.
Apparently that whole scene is a reverse of one that happens in star trek II the wrath of khan.
Honestly for me these two movies are all the star trek I need. I have seen star trek beyond but I'm pretty sure I haven't bothered rewatching it. Dunno what it is about it but I guess it just didn't click with me.

13:39 Christine Chapel is actually a character from the original TV show who worked as a nurse on the Enterprise assisting Dr. McCoy. She was actually played by the creator Gene Roddenberry's wife.

The first and second films in this series of Star Trek = one movie arc. First movie: Kirk does not believe in no wins scenarios and doesn't know what it means to make a sacrifice like his father. This movie Kirk has to make that decision where he "loses" and his character grows.

I absolutely love this film and since you don't know of Khan who was in one episode of the original Star Trek series but was a very impactful character who was then brought back for the second film titled Wrath of Khan in the original Star Trek movies you cannot understand the connections. I really don't believe I'm spoiling anything when I say the death scene in Wrath of Khan was extremely emotional. This is a great film which I actually enjoyed more than the first one in this new Star Trek trilogy.

Part of what made this plot feel a little complicated is having the fake identity for Khan. The first name he goes by is an actual character from the original show. While this was in production that is the character the studio announced Cumberbatch was playing. Fans found it rather odd that such a big actor would be playing such a minor character. It leaked before promotions started that he was really Khan and it made everything make sense. Khan is THE Star Trek villain. Ultimately it got kind of convoluted trying to hide who he was really playing.

You have to watch the Original Series' Episode "Space Seed" It's where Kahn first appeared and the second Movie which is titeled "The Wrath of Kahn" (You may skip the first one if you want or watch it, the second does not really build on it)

If you want the back story of the Kahn character. Check out The Original Series Star Trek episode s1ep22 (space seed) and the movie Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn. May not be a hit for the channel, but worth it to get the story on your own time.

Just chiming in with some Trek knowledge.
The Klingon Empire in the days of The Original Series and the Kelvin universe are another super power in the galaxy, like the Federation and the Romulans in the previous movie, but they're also extremely aggressive, with death during combat being seeing as the only way to die and go to their version of Heaven. Think of them as Space Vikings, but with a shoot first and "what do you mean ask questions?" attitude.
Warp isn't a speed, it's simply a mode of travel. So when the USS Vengeance caught up with the USS Enterprise, it simply has a higher top speed during Warp travel.
Also, do you have any intention of watching the original movies? There's something I'd add, but it's a spoiler for one of those. :3

People already mention it but there are scenes that are homage to old star trek. Khan actual kills Spoc in the original movies and was intend to be permanent death. That is why the scene was suppose to be emotional because they reverse the roles with Kirk being killed allegedly instead. However as much as people loved they movie they loved Leonard Nimoy (Spoc) more and brought him back to life in the next movie. I do agree though the first film was better and as cool as Khan as character he was he felt very tame power scale wise to the original Khan.

Khan Noonian Singh. Good British name👍
This’ll all make sense when you watch Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, from the early 80’s. Which is connected to an original Star Trek episode from the 60’s. Yeah.
The first movie was lightning in a bottle, very difficult to top. I found this movie to be very appropriately titled: it was dark. The third one, less so. The good humor of the first one is more evident in #3.
