Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a 1986 American science fiction film, the fourth installment in the Star Trek film franchise based on the television series Star Trek. The second film directed by Leonard Nimoy, it completes the story arc begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and continued in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). Intent on returning home to Earth to face trial for their actions in the previous film, the former crew of the USS Enterprise finds the planet in grave danger from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to Earth's past to find whales who can answer the probe's call.

Believe it or not. Voyage home wasn’t planned when Search for Spock was in postproduction. But the Bird of Prey was such an important asset. They needed a small ship that can land in the planet’s surface. The cloaking device made it invisible. You would think the last guy that had it was a time traveler…Oh wait.

Yeah, Wrath of Khan though Voyage Home weren't at all a planned trilogy but they did a good job of crafting one.
@PopcornRoulette The opening dedication at 1:57 was for the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger. On January of 1986; as Star Trek IV was in post-production, the Challenger shuttle exploded; with all seven of its crew on board, including Christa McAuliffe, who was a schoolteacher.
Harve Bennett; the producer of Star Trek’s II-V, wanted to do something to honor the Challenger crew. So he wrote up this dedication.
And when the film opened in November of 1986, I remember everyone in the theater applauding for a good solid 30 seconds before the movie even started.
I remember everyone applauded at the theater I went to as well. It was really great that this film was dedicated to their memories.
I'm a lifelong middle-aged Trekker, and this is my favorite film in the series. No murderous villains, just a nice Star Trek puzzle for the characters to solve and everybody gets their little moment to shine. (Sulu was supposed to have a bit where he met his great-great grandfather as a kid, but the child actor they hired wouldn't cooperate, so it's nice that he got the bit with the helicopter, too). We also see the final resolution of the feud between Spock and his father. When we first met Sarek and Amanda on the TV show, Sarek wouldn't speak to Spock because he was upset that Spock joined Starfleet instead of going to the Vulcan Science Academy. So it was huge for long-time fans to see the two of them finally make up.

The new Enterprise wasn't built quickly. Commonly accepted lore is that Starfleet renamed the newly refitted USS Yorktown to USS Enterprise and assigned the crew.
which is why it's a bit janky in the next movie :/

@@dupersuper1938 I'm of two minds about it. On the one hand, it sure explains where Starfleet pulled that ship from so quickly. At the same time, I feel bad for the Yorktown's captain who lost his command to Kirk. Was hardly his fault that his ship was disabled by the probe, after all.
Given that Yorktown was out in space during the events of the movie, I wouldn't accept that.
Poetically, it should have been a refitted USS Ranger that stepped in as the new Enterprise, given that the actual USS Ranger (CV-61) stood in for the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in this film.
@@BogeyTheBearI assumed that the Yorktown crew didn't survive. Space is full cold and radiation. Without power the heaters and radiation shielding don't work.
Scoop the frozen crewsicles into the waste disposal chute, lick of paint to cover that lingering aroma of peri-mortem panic, whack the heating up to "toasty", slap a new name sticker on the outside and she's good to go.
This movie also helped with Humpback Whales being hunted significantly less and helping them no longer be as endangered.
That's probably the greatest legacy of this movie, and hopefully will be to future generations ( of both humans AND whales!)
Having sat through all the ST movies, this had by far the best audience reaction, and was deservedly the most critically acclaimed of the ST movies. It also had the highest box office revenue until JJ's 2009 Trek.

@@shallowgal462 Adjusted grosses aren't real though. TMP took a lot of money, but made very little profit. Voyage Home grossed more than TMP, and that stood as the highest grossing film until First Contact.
JJ Trek has grossed a lot, but for the most part has barely turned a profit because the budgets are way too high.
@@jonisilk Adjusted grosses account for inflation, and thus real dollars. TMP grossed more than any other Trek film until 2009, in real money. It's the only fair way to compare box office, since they record money taken in, not actual attendance, or attendance as a fraction of the population, nor can they break it down demographically. Profits, however, are a completely different subject from grosses. Then we're talking net. TMP made very little profit between the budget over-run and promotion/advertising costs. TVH made a much bigger profit because its second-highest real-dollar gross box office was made on a much smaller budget. TWOK may have made a similar profit, because it didn't gross a whole lot less in real dollars, but was made on an even smaller budget. roughly half (I've heard figures of both $9 million and $13 million for TWOK, and don't know which is right, but TVH budget was around $25 million).
The "Punk On The Bus" was portrayed by Kirk Thatcher, one of the producers of the film. He also wrote and performed the song. A couple of years ago, he reprised his role in an episode of "Star Trek: Picard"
Kirk Thatcher has quite a career. He jokingly stated that despite all the projects he worked on, his tombstone will read "Known as Punk on Bus."
He also appeared in Spiderman Homecoming at the request of Kevin Feige as a man with a Boombox. Now wether its the same man is up for debate 😂
This story was a big surprise to all the fans of this series. And still is a fan favorite today.
Best part of the whole movie was the last 5 minutes, when they got the new enterprise....first time i ever teared up in a movie...i remember all these movies when they were new.
Fun fact, Transparent Aluminum was invented in the early 2010s, it remains experimental for now.
The "hello computer scene" is one of my all time favorites.
The New Enterprise is nothing but the USS Yorktown that was heard of earlier in the movie, forced to improvise a solar panel to stay powered...
The next movie isn't the best but has some good character development for our main trio.
I am not sure you are right about the transparent Aluminum. Actually manufacturing of stronger glass with Aluminum ions in it, goes back into the early 70s (but was then forgotten). Another research-paper in the 80s talked about the same thing, and as far i know this Star Trek episode picked it up, because they were sure: no normal human would have heard about that research paper. Actually there were some manufacturers even back then, who made that ''aluminum-glass'' back then for special needs, and it was very expensive. Later on (few years before 2010) gorilla glass came on the same foundations and was developed since then to better and better versions.
But to speak with computers Star Trek definetely predicted. Nowadays its a total normal thing to speak and ask the computer. A AI-Assistent espescially (Siri, Alexa, Google-Assistent, ... and now even ChatGPT). Its even more advanced than it was portrayed in Star Trek, because all those AI-Assistents nowaways speak with a much more natural voice.
My dad was an engineer back in the 80s when this came out. He was at a meeting, and they were discussing what material to use for a project, and one of his friends said "transparent aluminum", which got a laugh out of everyone - because they had ALL seen this. This was one of the first films I saw in a theater, I was just a kid, like a little kid, but I remember really liking it. Then, watching it decades later, as an adult, I still love it. It's such a great conclusion to the trilogy - the other 2 movies were amazing, but they were definitely darker, and I think it needed this kind of more light-hearted adventure to cap it off.

This was the most commercially successful and most mainstream of the Trek movies at the time (1986). It was also released in Europe titled as "The Voyage Home: Star Trek IV." This film's success convinced the studio, Paramount, to create a new syndicated television series to premiere in 1987 called "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
My favorite Star Trek movie. So funny and heartwarming at the same time.

Fun Fact: This film features the only instance of "Scotty, beam me up." in the franchise.
Historical Fact: Scotty (James Doohan) helps Dr. Nichols (Alex Henteloff) "invent" transparent aluminum, which, in real life, became possible 23 years later in 2009, developed partially by Professor Justin Wark of Oxford University's Department of Physics.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Associate Producer Kirk R. Thatcher cameos as the punk on the bus who is nerve-pinched by Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Thatcher expressed displeasure at the music chosen for his boom box, and asked to write and perform a song that he felt would be more representative of his character. The result was the "I Hate You" song.
What Script Fact: The woman who answers Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) when they are looking for the nuclear "wessels" was an extra who was not supposed to speak. Layla Sarakalo had never acted before and "act naturally" was her instruction. So when she was asked, she improvised an answer. Much to Sarakalo's surprise, her unscripted line was kept in the film. Sarakalo happened upon the set when her car was towed away to make room for the film's production. Sarakalo offered to be an extra so that she could make money to get her car back.
This was my favorite of the series. I liked it when Spock was having trouble using curse words. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you it's one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to The Future.
I was a crew member during that time period ( '78 - '81 ) and worked in CIC/CATCC area. Watching the filming of all the scenes in that area was great to witness. Hope others would give it a reaction viewing. Real squadrons, pilots, actual launches, flying, recoveries, real crew members, musical score.
Being the Star Trek film most accessible to general audiences (meaning not just appealing to Trekkies) I believe this was consequentially the most commercially successful of the six original Star Trek films. The Challenger shuttle disaster took place while they were filming this, which is why they felt the need to put that dedication at the beginning.
Other space oriented films didn't fare so well that year - most notably SpaceCamp which tells the tale of a type of space shuttle disaster. It's actually quite good and co-stars Spielberg's wife as well as Joaquin Phoenix in a very early role (back when he was known as Leaf Phoenix).
That was a fairly decent movie.

The actress who played Gillian was the mother in Child's Play.
The Enterprise-A was, most likely, the same USS Yorktown that was mentioned at the start of the film. It was given a quick onceover by the Corps of Engineers and re-christened. You'll see the result in the next movie.
In the novelizations, that is exactly correct.

One of the Starfleet officers to appear on screen, at HQ during the storm crisis is Jane Wiedlen, of the Go-Go's (guitar, writer, vocals) She has an interesting hairstyle. The one Officer, south Asian, who recounts his peril from his crippled ship, was then recently in James Bon's "Octopussy" as a fellow agent in India; he was a professional Tennis athlete too.
I'm enjoying your ST reactions. So great to see someone discover & enjoy ST for 1st time. I grew up watching The Orig Series & Movies w/my Dad. ST 4 is his fav of the movies. This was a movie of my childhood. It was one of the first movies my dad bought on VHS. Before that we had Beta videotapes.
I’ve seen this one more than any other Star Trek movie or episode. It is gold.
Voyage Home is probably my favorite of the TOS films. It most captured the flavor of the original series while feeling like a film-scale story. It was very popular at the time, even with non-Trek viewers. Just a good movie.

Humor was always part of TOS but the first 3 films were very heavy and serious. ST IV gave the film franchise a fun adventure with is fish out water elements giving it a more lighthearted and comedic experience before making the remaining movies more serious again.
That was a kiss-off if I ever saw one. When a girl is interested, she shows it and when she's not, "Let's just be friends."
She just used him for a free ride to the future. What a 304. 😂

What I want to point out about Star Trek 2, 4, and 6 is that they were all written by Nicholas Meyer, and then 2 and 6 were directed by him as well. He was an instrumental architect of 3 of the best Star Trek movies.
The thing I remember is that my drama teacher got to be an extra. He walks behind them in front of the "Yellow Pages" building. And this movie was hysterical in the cold war, and it's just as good now.

The “nuclear wessels” is a lot funnier in context. During the lighter part of the Cold War, you have someone with a Russian accent asking where the United States weapons are stored.
Also, I like the very next scene on the bus. Notice the pessimistic lyrics in the song that Kirk calls “damn noise”. Kirk’s very being is built around thinking of possibilities and hope.
Kirk was right. That music was damned noise.

While I'll agree that Wrath of Khan was a superior movie on many levels, this one is my favorite Star Trek movie. I would have been fine if this had been the final Star Trek movie as it brought us full circle through what was basically a trilogy with Wrath, Search, and Voyage. The cast and characters really felt like a family here and there was so much humor in with all the drama, which I love.

I also liked that a couple of characters from the Original Series appeared in this movie. Commander (formerly Ensign) Janice Rand and Doctor (formerly Nurse) Christine Chapel were visible at Starfleet Headquarters. In addition guitarist and vocalist Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos appears on one of the big screens as a communications officer reporting from one of the disabled ships.
Also, when McCoy hands Scotty the mouse at the computer during the tour of the plexiglass plant is the clearest view we ever get of James Doohan's missing middle finger, shot off on Juno Beach during D-Day. Ridiculous as it sounds, it's a true story.
I also liked that they portrayed the position of the male humpback whale's singing posture, vertical with head down, in this movie, and I liked that the probe assumed the same posture.
When i saw this movie, I thought, more than ever, I wish I could do that Vulcan nerve pinch. The water scene was filmed in Feb and they were cold in that water.

Yorktown, and Enterprise are common American ship names that are regularly re-issued. During WW2 The Enterprise was one of the most decorated carriers in the Pacific
decades of watching this movie and I never realized what a double meaning kirk says when he says I'm out of time.

The flight deck of an aircraft carrier (the one in the movier is in fact the USS Ranger, as Enterprise was not available for filming at the right time) is typically around 50-60 feet from the waterline, so almost double the height of the tallest diving platforms used at the Olympics, and certainly high enough to cause injury - such as broken bones - if you land badly.
Mr Spock's "guesses" are spot-on accurate. They arrive back at the same time they departed down to the second.
I love the music score in this film. Especially the opening and closing credits.
Dr. Jillian Taylor is played by Cathryn Hicks who also played the role of Annie Camden in the TV series 7th Heaven
It was wonderful to see Jane Wyatt as Spock's mom again for the first time since TOS episode, "Journey to Babel" (1967). We had, after all, seen his dad Sarek again after that episode already in both TAS episode, "Yesteryear" (1973) and in Star Trek III, but Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Number One, Nurse Chapel/Dr. Chapel) had performed the voice for her character in "Yesteryear."
It was also nice to see Janice Rand (the captain's yeoman on TOS) again. You know her as the transporter chief in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and she stood silently in the space station cafeteria watching the damaged Enterprise limp back into space dock in Star Trek III. Dr. Chapel from The Motion Picture (Nurse Chapel on TOS and Number One in the original pilot) was back here again too with dialog.
Saavik's dialog was 100% unnecessary and redundant, since she'd already told Kirk what David had done in the last movie. This was sadly a rare example of sloppy writing in Star Trek IV, which is otherwise almost perfect. They could have found a better way to inform audiences watching IV that had not seen III what had happened. They did, in fact, have Sarek ask the Klingon ambassador, "They did kill Kirk's son?"
Don't you remember? Spock's uniform was in his coffin (the torpedo tube), which was destroyed when the Genesis planet blew up.
The best special effect in the whole movie is William Shatner's hair when he was swimming under water towards the end. 😂😈
This movie was great!!! it felt like a fun and happy Star Trek Movie!!! I have a few shirts I wear that have the movie poster of Star Trek The Voyage home that I got in the mail. Great video and Hope to see more like this.
I always find it striking to think that when a four-day-old William Shatner was somewhere in Montreal, a little boy was being born in Boston who would become a very prominent person in his life--Leonard Nimoy.
This film was call back to some of the Orginal series time travel episodes, i think that is one of the reasons it is so beloved. The Original Series would use sets and constumes from other TV shows that where set in the 1920s, 1930s and 1950s, to save time and money.

Oh my goodness, after thirty years, I just realized that the sound after the commander shouts 'Get him back!', which in your video is at 12:20, is distinctly a sonic boom.

I always thought it was just the weather thunderclap or something. But it's the sonic boom and shock from the bird-of-prey coming down in the bay. I always knew it was a 'we now return you to just seconds before we left'... But that detail eluded me.
Admiral Cartwright is played by Brock Peters. He is most famous for playing one of the lead roles in To Kill a Mockingbird along side Gregory Peck grandfather of the current Spock in Strange New Worlds. Ethen Peck. Peters would later play Commander Siskos father in Deep Space 9
I was so young when I saw this film on VHS that I do not recall the first time seeing this film.
I Love this "episode" of Star Trek, after the gut wrenching pain of the darker aspects and tragic moments in "The Wrath of Khan" and "The Search For Spock"..."The Voyage Home" by it's title and story was in itself, a story of hope.
Children grow up to be adults and leave home to make their own way in the world.
As Adults children - adults - plan to not make the same mistakes as parents. Going HOME is always a quest of Hope, from the Illiad (Homer's...sp) but returning home, going home is a hope of success, or safety or atime to heal or all of that.
After the tragedies of II and III, the crew needed a story thats main directive was hope.
...and like Spock, George and are in essence bringing Humpback Whales back from the dead, so a second chance in life.
I love 2,3 and 4...they feel like chapters of a whole, so it's impossible to choose a favorite out of 1 - or one, it is Star Trek, and each chapter informs the next, so 4 by itself would be a little incoherent if we hadn't seen II or III...it's part of an Arc...

Catherine Hicks, the marine biologist Gillian Taylor, one of several actors to be tested. For timing & connivance Hicks went w/the studio's film crew to Shatner's ranch on a Fri. for a quick screen test. She & Shatner connected so well, they all stayed, & shot all weekend. Search over.
I think I saw this in the theaters back in 1986 a total of 8 times!
Star Trek IV was Deliberately Written and made to be a light hearted movie to help ease the Fans off the Previous two Dramatic movies! They wanted to give the fans something to laugh at after losing spock and then getting him back agian, Losing David, and Losing the Original 1701! They knew what they were doingf!
Fans also call this movie "The one with the Whales"

In The "Nuclear Wressles" scene, the lady that told tnhem about Alameda was out walking her dog that just happend to walk into the shot. The Produiciton crew had to chase after her to get her to sign a Waiver to be in the movie!
Eddie Murphy was gonna be in he movie, but Declined so could be in "Golden Child" So they re-wrote his character into GiIllian "Cahtrine Hicks".
Most of the whales you see in the movie are all Radio controlled!
The actor that played Jillian along with the actor that played Capt. Decker for Star Trek The Motion Picture both starred together in a show on The WB called 7th Heaven which was on from 1996 until 2007. Maybe that's were you know her from. Stephen Collins and Catherine Hicks.
The bad guy was a giant piece of chalk dangling a blue soccer ball while singing humpback whale songs. You know, typical villain.
Notice that Saavik stayed behind on Vulcan with Spock's mom, Amanda. Spock's baby would need its grandmother.
The Vulcan in the Counsel meeting, in the beginning, is Spock's father, Saarik, played by Mark Lenard. He showed up in the original series...and once, I think, in TNG.
You're going to love Star Trek 2009. Great character introductions. This was '86 the cold war was still going on. Chekov a Russian asking about nuclear vessels would be weird.

In the original series there was at least one episode where they accidently went into earths past. Season 1 Episode 9 "Tomorrow is Yesterday". Thirty years after this movie Transparent Aluminum became a reality.

the reason why The Wrath Of Kahn is the top favorite is because it was directly tied to The Series which The film also honors the continuity of the original series by bringing back Kahn to end Kahn's Life Story for good

The cast playing around in the water near the end wasn't in the script. After filming the footage for the movie, the cast just began playing around while the cameras were still filming. So they decided to keep it, despite that Spock is clearly seen smiling/laughing
1st off. This one of my favorite films. I dont wanna date myself. 86 was heartbreaking and amazing. As kids we watched on "Live" TV the Challenger blowing up.

Interesting note: The punk kid with the boom box on the bus also showed up in season 2, episode 4 of the new Pickard series. It was played by the same actor, all grown up, with the boom box again....only this time, when he is asked to shut it off, he does pretty quickly....and just grumbles a bit..."sorry, I just really like that song."
And the song in this movie is "I Hate You" by Edge of Etiquette, Kirk Thatcher"s own band. In Picard, the song is, as I recall... "I Still Hate You". (Kirk Thatcher being Punk on Bus himself 😂)

Originally Eddie Murphy was supposed to play a scientist obsessed with aliens in this movie but it didnt work out
The USS Enterprise CVN65 scenes were filmed on the USS Ranger CV60 due to the components of the Enterprise engine room being classified. The Ranger also stood in for Enterprise in Top Gun. Sadly Ranger was scrapped vs becoming a museum ship as she deserved.
The Cetation Institute was fillmed at the Monterey Bay Aquarium about 2 hrs south of San Francisco

"Don''t splurge." Adjusted for inflation, $100 in 1986 would be equivalent today to $40 for each of the 7 crew members. Still not a lot, but not quite as absurd as it might initially sound.
This is a fun movie! I love it! And I loved your reaction. There's a meme going around on Facebook which states that Kirk and crew went back in time on Christopher Lloyd's vehicle. Anyhow, Star Trek 5 is a fun movie, however, some fans say it's bad--i quite enjoy it. I've seen much worse movies. And as a Deacon, there are several relevant points in film number 5 that I think are spot-on. Hope you enjoy it!

I lived in a land-locked, midwestern state in the USA when this movie came out but have lived the past 27+ years in southeast Alaska. My perspective of humpback whales has been informed by several whale-watching experiences and an indigenous culture that values the humpbacks along with other animal species of the region. I'll admit that this is the goofiest of the Star Trek movies, (though TOS had some pretty (fun) goofy episodes as well), but I love the environmentalist message at its core. Mr. Spock's (burned out hippy) persona in this installment of the series is a great "comic straight-man" and I love it! (I may even try some of his brand of profanity just for kicks!?)
It's the movie that feels most like an episode of TOS.

As mentioned in the comments. The novel version of this movie The USS. Yorktown which was damaged by the probe was decommissioned by starfleet and special dispensation granted to retrofit and rename her USS. Enterprise-A 2nd ship to the name. Technically she is the 3rd But we don't count Archer's ship Cause if the Time Detectives don't then I sure as hell won't either. Nobody argues with Temporal Affairs.

This film was unique for introducing the concept of Transparent aluminum. Now it is a thing but Transparent aluminum was not a thing until 2 decades after this film came out.
Cami, there's been constant debate among Trekkies for years as to which film is best, STAR TREK 2 or 4, and the debate rages on to this day! Both movies have their supporters, so the question will probably never be settled. Then, to add fuel to the fire, you have STAR TREK 6: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, the last film with the original crew, which has its own supporters as the best one!! 😄

Well, all of his belongings would have been blown up with the Enterprise except what he was buried in, and if he was buried in his uniform, that was left in or near his coffin on Genesis.
Yeah, the (refitted) Enterprise and the Enterprise A are fine, but my favorite (apart from the NX-01) is the USS Enterprise 1701-C. It doesn't get much screen time in the TNG episode when it makes an appearance, but the design is really cool, gives a preview of some Enterprise D's design features, but is a bit more angular and aggressive looking, especially at the rear of the secondary hull.
