What up pal, the book had them all being South American, Paul Verhoeven switched it out for white people because it suited the message he was trying to send about fascism and propoganda.
This had over $100 mil budget , Starship troopers 2 and 3 , less than $10 mil each , gives some idea if its even worth watching .
In part 3 Casper Van Diem is back as Johnny Rico .
I dont get the whole dissecting thing , we did not have that in school in Finland , we had these things called biology books .

Um, you think an entire _population_ of them fled there? Argentina's white population is mostly from Spain and Italy. And I was more talking about the part where you claimed the hive of vicious territorial insects are (or even could be) victims here.
I don't agree for the obvious big bug being flamed in the background as Rico just put the grenade in it. That was the most obvious CGI of all time, IMO. But, rest of the movie was quite great on that note.

Doesn't matter. The characters are one dimensional cutouts, and that's intentional. There's no point plumbing their motives, they're basically empty marionettes meant to keep the satirical plot moving along.

Yes, that was one thing we got teached in medic training in the army: don't pull it out.
When we did training for the new recruits I was an "actor" and had to play an injured soldier with an impalement.
The whole point was that they had to move me without pulling put the taped on rod.
If an artery is injured the item might close the injury. When you pull it out, you can bleed to death fast.
or cause more damage while pulling it out depending on what your impaled with it could have ridges that will cut you up when you pull it
Truth be told given the bugs spear legs plus the placement of the wounds.
We are looking at a collapsed lung a completely destroyed kidney and maybe liver, ruptured intestines not to mention bone fragmentation in the ribs and shoulders, she was a goner whether or not Rico would have pulled out the leg. If anything Rico took her out of her misery much much faster this way,

The actors were reluctant to film the shower scene but said they would do it if Paul Verhoeven directed the scene naked so he did

@@DaemonKeido the scene helps establish that this is a bizarrely sexless society, full of people who would never even think to be horny unless a government authority told them to. Rico literally only starts seeing Diz in a sexual way after his commanding officer in the field tells him he should; before that moment, he literally is incapable of feeling such an urge. That's how brainwashed these people are.
Interesting fact, in the original book of the same name, Dizzy is actually a man and is only mentioned once in the first chapter. Also, Johnny's father does actually survive Buenos Aires and goes on to join the MI to fight the bugs as well.
One of few complaints I had with this screenwriting.

Two things that are required in every Verhoeven film: Social satire, and, over-the-top gore.

@@peterang6912 I love Verhoeven, but he himself said he only read two chapters of the story, and his idea that Total Recall is all a dream not only doesn't mesh with the original story, it doesn't even mesh with what he actually puts on screen. Verhoeven makes great movies that you better not think too hard about.

Funny you should mention jets in their shoes - the book this was based on actually had all the troopers in ironman-esque powersuits that dropped from orbit. A bit too complex for a 90s film to achieve
the CGI team was limited by budget & time, they could create the power armour or the bugs, but not both. ;(
They do have that in later animated movies, tho

I got to see a sneak peak of this when I was 14, thanks to my older sister’s friend who won a radio contest. When Ironside said “Make it 20 minutes” the whole theater erupted in applause.

When that guy on the news reel said that the concept of a "thinking" bug was "offensive" to him, I laughed out loud, and said: "That is SO TODAY!!" Literally. This movie predicted the freaking internet!

"Robocop" "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers" kind of make a trilogy if you squint really hard. "Robocop" it's an alternate 2020's, "Total Recall" it's further in the future, and humans are traveling the solar system, "Starship Troopers" they're traveling deep space.
In the novel, Johnny Rico is Filipino and his father survived the attack and joins the military.

The special effects in this flick have held up well, over the decades since its release.
The actor playing their teacher-become-tough officer, Michael Ironside, is a terrific Canadian character actor who had an especially busy career in the 1980s and 90s. You can hear his Canuck accent clearly, whenever he says the word "out".

The satire went over my head when I first saw this, but once I was old enough to understand it I appreciated this movie much more.
Verhoeven gets better with every rewatch once you get the hang of his satire.

Bless them both. Half the audience for Terminator 2 were kids. I get so many dirty looks these days when I take my kids to movies. Thought a couple were going to have aneurysms when I took my 6/7 year old daughter to the shark movie "The Shallows." It's still her favorite btw.

When SST came out, I was 18yo. Went to the cinema alone. But I was 9yo when my dad took my sister(8yo) and I to watch Robocop. We watched a lot of 80's action movies when they came out back then. Heck, we even watch some on school night. Rambo 3 was my first cinema experience.
Denise Richards was pretty big in the late 90s and Early 2000s. She is still acting today. She was a Bond Girl and also starred in a movie called Wild Things. That movie is definitely worth checking out.

I think part of that is that it is more temperate. I think US-icans think of everything south of the Border as Tropical, but Chile and Argentina are close to Antarctica.

Some really violent ones, certainly.
One of my all time favorites. Way ahead of its time. It went over a lot of people’s heads, and still does. It’s a film told from the point of view of a fascist society, and it rarely reveals its hand to the audience. Even the cheesy acting is all part of the satire.

It's a director who grew up under Nazi occupation looking at 1990s Yankee society and saying "it really wouldn't take too much for you guys to go fully fascistic, you're already half way there".
The movie went over many people's head the same way the book went over Paul Verhoevens head.

In the original book, the troopers had jump jets and much better fire power. The Roughneck animated series was awesome as well.

It's funny that you mentioned that they should have the ability to fly away from the outpost as in the book the mobile infantry did have limited flight abilities. In the book they are so much more armoured but it would have cost too much to have that in the movie. Btw, the same armour they have in this movie also makes an appearance in the TV show Firefly, the train robbery episode.

So, when my kids were about 11 and 13, I rented this from the local video store without really reading the blurb. I thought it was a fun Star Wars type romp. They were traumatised for weeks. They still haven't let me forget and they have kids of their own now.

The writing on this film is just top notch. It absolutely NAILS the satire so perfectly a lot of people miss it. It's honestly one of my favorites simply because it goes to such extreme lengths to be satirical. It's right up there with A Modest Proposal.
Paul Verhoeven also directed Total Recall, which is also a sci-fi action satire. This was loosely adapted from the Robert A. Heinlein novel of the same name

In the commentary the director stated that he felt like he made a mistake killing Diz, and that he should have killed Carmen. The test audiences they showed the movie to all agreed with him. Also, this was just a small victory in comparison to the entire war.

My first time watching this movie it went straight over my head. I just thought it was a gore-fest for the sake of being gory. I didn't rewatch it for a few years until after I read the book. The 2 are totally different but I figured I'd give it another shot. I got it the second time around and it turned into a movie I recommend to all my friends now. I also really recommend the book. Totally different than the movie but great in it's own way.

When I was around 6 years old my dad and sister rented this movie thinking it was going to be your standard action movie. We put it on and as soon as the reporter gets split in half in the beginning I started to cry and my dad rushed to shut off the tv.
Even though I had already seen plenty of R rated action movies with my dad at that point, it was the most visceral death I had seen and that memory stuck with me.
That being said, I eventually ended up really enjoying the movie later in life and even more when I was able to understand the satire regarding the military and propaganda. Definitely recommended as long as you aren’t 6
I found this especially funny cos I watched this I think when I was 6 or 7 as well...I watched it so many times that I actually wore the VHS tape out 😅

We used to do dissections in Australia for high school. Back in 1981, in the Western Suburbs of Sydney, I got to dissect a smelly defrosted rat twice. Once when I was in the top science class, and again when I was demoted to the second level science class after I couldn't memorise the entire periodic table of elements, in the correct order.
PSA, Drill Instructor Zim is play by Clancy Brown who also voices Mr. Crabs on Sponge Bob, which always makes his scenes even more hilarious to me, since Crabs is always busting balls. LOL
Yup! Clancy Brown is quite a veteran of acting. He was in the cantina scene in Ep 4 of Star Wars as a Devaronian (a red, big horned alien) and he played Burg (also a red, big horned Devaronian) in Season 1 of "The Mandalorian".
Clancy Brown and my brother hung around together between the ages of 10 to 17 years old. He's manly a supporting actor but still has quite a few lead roles. He also played Surtur in Thor Ragnarok. He's been in over 84 movies and many tv series.
He also played the main antagonist in The Highlander

I love the book this movie is (very, very loosely) based on. First encountered it when my Dad was at the US Army War College, and this was assigned reading. He had me read it, too, since I'm into sci-fi.
First time I saw the movie was in the theater at Ft. Knox, and 90% of the rest of the audience was young soldiers in basic training on a night out. During the co-ed shower scene, some kid down front jumped and pointed at the screen. He turned around, shouting, "Sarge! Sarge! Why don't we get that?!"

Love how it's very obviously a fairly big budget movie filled to the brim with social commentary, but wrapped with satire and presented as a cheesy splatter film. I love it, but I can totally see why it flopped at the box office when it came out.
Fortunately, it was also obvious it would become a much loved cult classic. 😊
I can assure you that when I was in high school in Canberra in the 70s, we certainly did do dissections in science classes.
Through the 60's I read almost all of Robert Heinlein I could get my hands on. What many people don't know was he wrote SciFi for kids in the 50's. One of the point in the book was passed over in the Movie: TO be citizen you had to have served in the Military or police, fire department or Rescue service and only citizen could vote. Heinlein was one of the prime leaders in Space opera and mind opening Ideas. His bet short story collection was "The Past Through Tomorrow". Not all his books were gory but all were mind opening. (Yea, I'm still a great fan)

I always feel compelled to point out when the guy gets shot during training she shot him through the eye so the helmet was irrelevant anyway.

Pretty sure Starship Troopers counts as his third sci fi movie. Total Recall is his second, and Robocop is his first

I agree. The Verhoeven 'Trilogy' is must see film. Hollowman smacked of studio interference and Showgirls isn't for everyone.
There's still "Flesh + Blood" (1985). Not SF, but History Drama. It features Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Because you liked the character of Dizzy, and you also mentioned Star Trek, fun little fact, the actress Dina Meyer, who played Diz, was also in the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis" - admittedly one of my lesser preferred Trek movies, but still a fun little connection. She also played Barbara Gorden aka Oracle (and formerly Batgirl) on the short lived series "Birds of Prey"

Starship troopers wasnt R rated in Australia. I watched it when i was 12 years old. And it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
Plus it was the first movie ever to have the first large scale, CGI battle scenes

I’ve always dug Verhoeven’s parodying of American culture, from the hyper consumerism in Robocop to the jingoism in this movie. Fun fact: they filmed the alien world at Hell’s Half Acre here in Wyoming when I was in high school.
Verhoeven’s ability to parody a genre film while still being an exemplar of that genre is one of my favorite things about his American films.

I absolutely adore how over-the-top satirical this movie is and, in my opinion, it's a fun send-up of the real-life horrors of unadulterated fascism.

There's nothing "Fascist" about it. The war starts because humans, against the wishes of the government, settle in bug space because they have the freedom to do it. The bugs respond with asteroid attacks, which must be defended against. The society allows freedom to those who don't wish to be citizens, Ricos's family for instance is wealthy and they aren't citizens. When the war turns badly the "dictator" resigns, taking their responsibility for the fact. The movie is about the military, thus it's militaristic, militaristic is not fascist.

Paul Verhoeven said in an article about the film, "Robert Heinlein’s original 1959 science-fiction novel was militaristic, if not fascistic. So I decided to make a movie about fascists who aren’t aware of their fascism."
Shocked she didn't see Neil Patrick Harris return towards the end and immediately realize he's in a Nazi uniform. This movie is dripping with satire about fascism.

Fascism and jingoism. I’m not totally sure if the society they established in the movie has a dictator but there are definitely fascist elements with doing your civic duty by serving the government in the military.

That's because Verhoeven took a serious book about civic virtue, and turned it into Bug Wars. He saw Heinlein's work as fascist, and twisted the script to his (simplistic) point of view.

@@Caseytify Heinlein himself was in the process of converting to the John Birch Society while he was writing this book, and he himself was on record as considering that organization "essentially fascist." Verhoeven got him dead to rights with this film.
Astronoid suits are more typically called pressure suits (or p-suits) because they maintain a stable amount of atmospheric pressure around someone and breathable air. Typically they also contain temperature controls for regulating the environment.

Rocket boots? They totally had jetpacks in the book! Okay, they also had power armor. Its a whole different story, pretty much.
My big issue with Zander being Carmen's instructor is how he managed to go from high school senior directly to flight instructor without the intermediate step of actually learning to fly first.
There are hundreds of possibilities as to why Zander could have been a higher ranking pilot. He knew someone to teach him, ie a parent, and he may have been in a ROTC program in school and went to basic training or boot camp during the summer between junior and senior year. Those are possibilities that happen in real life more than you may want to know.

the best part of this movie is that at the time nobody got the satire; not the audience, not the critics, and not the people interviewing the director. the satire in this movie flew over the heads of everyone at the time and only in the last few years have people realized the true nature of the satire in the movie. definitely look up what the director said about this movie if you have the time.
That's funny. I had read the book before the movie and so had a number of people I knew. I don't remember a single argument being made that the movie wasn't satirizing the book. It did the book very little justice, although it was probably a more enjoyable movie the way it is than if they'd remained loyal to the book.
Never dissected any animals in schools here either. Didn't need to. We slaughter sheep and gut fish as part of normal civilian life
Funny thing is in the book the mobile infantry DO have jumpjets and are all wearing power armour suits with nuke launchers.
I watched this after I got out of the military... i messed up... I also watched Full-Metal Jacket for the first time while in BOOTCAMP
Also watched this shortly after my service.
I was infantry and my friend in the air force, so Rico's punishment contrasted to Carmen's maiden voyage was interesting to watch. Perhaps even too close to reality...

Having read the book by Robert Heinlein (many times) I initially hated this movie. It took a serious, grounded story and turned it into campy schlock. But many years later I made peace with it, and at least accepted it for the clever satire it’s trying to be.

You will not believe me, but this was the movie that made me enter sci fi, the first time I saw it I was ten years old, and I was fascinated by this movie.
When Rico offered the position of Squad leader to Ace and he'd turned it down saying,"I've Been There And I Blew It, I'm Just Here To Fight"
That shows that he had learned from the experience on Klendathu that he was in way over his head

During pre screenings the audiences were overwhelmingly negative over Dizzy's death and there was pressure to remove it but the director insisted it stay. Saw that in a documentary somewhere.
In the novel Dizzy dies on page one. And is never mentioned again. So this movie is a real step up for Dizzy. Of course, Carl also dies and Carmen is just a passing meeting between two old high school classmates, not a romantic interest.

I used to catch this on tv from time to time when I was a kid. Obviously, it was heavily censored on television so I didn't realize at the time how gruesome it was. But I was in it for the giant bugs. Years later, I finally watched it on streaming in its original form as an adult and loved it that much more.
You have to know the culture of the Air Force, Navy, Army and Marines when it comes to training, lodging and even the difference in what kind of food the different services get.
This is the first person i have ever seen cry while watching starship troopers. :p
