It was actually ranked the 7th best Star Trek movie of all time by fans lol. So the fans think it's a better Trek movie than half the real Trek movies.

Its both a parody and an homage to Star Trek TOS and the cast. It has been called a Perfect Movie.AND there is a "making of" movie about it. One of my all time favorite movies!

He felt from what he had heard/seen it was going to make fun of Star Trek and the Fans that made Trek what it is. Then Stewart gets a call from his friend Johnathan Frakes. I loved how they portrayed Leonard Nimoy's impact on the fanbase through Spock, with Alan Rickman's character. How he became very jaded about his character, and the people that idolized him. But then, he realized, just how many people, had genuinely tried to model their life after the character he made, to be logical, to not let their emotions dictate their actions, and how many people genuinely benefited from that kind of mental discipline and structure to their lives, how Spock was literally a father figure for a lot of young people, who maybe didn't have such a role model growing up . And how Leonard eventually came back around to the impact of Spock as a positive force in the universe. And the way that played out with Quillick and Alan, it chokes me up EVERY time I see it. How the phrase that he had come to loathe, genuinely had meaning for him now. That his work wasn't a sham, that it meant something to people. Just so damn good.

This is an excellent parody. Well written and very creatively performed. The Thermians (spl) were invented almost completely by Enrico Colontoni. He came up with how they should move and sound and convinced his fellow cast members to follow suit. It worked quite well. The premise is surprisingly plausible and the humor seems a natural outgrowth of a basic misunderstanding.
It's interesting how the Thermian behavior and vocal patterns coming from Enrico Colontoni is almost exactly the same as how the Ferengi came to be from Armin Shimerman
It is such an excellent parody that it can stand alone and be a good movie in itself even without being a parody, and without knowing what it parodies.
Fun Fact: The guy who died in episode 81 (named Guy actually haha) in this movie and the terrible prisoner from The Green Mile are played by the same actor Sam Rockwell. This is also Justin Long's first movie and when Tim Allen sees space for the first time the screen ratio changes to show Tim Allen's realization that it's all real. 26:51 This is arguably the scene that everyone talks about the most when people think of this film. Notice how when Gwen cries out "screw that", she mouths "fuck that"? That's because Sigourney Weaver had to dub her own line over when the decision was made to remove stronger profanities from the film.
I believe the success of Galaxy Quest helped pave the way for The Orville…one of my favorite science fiction shows in recent years. Mary, if you watch the trailer for The Orville, you will be hooked by the comedy.
ya the Orville is actually a really great series. I thought it wouldve been more of a spoof because of McFarland. But to be honest it has just the right amount of comedy.
@@vando6679 The Orville mixes some serious storylines with the comedy as well. Episode 3 "About a girl" concerning Bortus and Klydens baby and the eventual outcome is something I didn't expect from the show.
@@Dizzy473 I haven't watched too much of The Orville but, from what I've seen, the humor and earnestness aren't really in sync. The Simpsons, for example, could be earnest and funny. Family Guy... not so much. The first sci-fi show that comes to mind for me with these qualities is Stargate:SG1 {after you get through first couple of seasons).
There’s a cut scene about Tony Shalhoub’s character and the fact that he’s supposed to be high throughout the film which is why he’s so calm about everything
This was rightly called a love letter to Star Trek fans. My wife and I saw this in the theater, and could name the episodes of Star Trek that were being parodied.
Rewatching it I found out that Lahnk is Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute) and Guy Fleegman is Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer - Ironman) & The Announce at the end is Kevin McDonald (The Voice of Pleakley from Lilo & Stitch.
For me, it was Alan Rickman's character Development that was the Most intense. For "The New Adventures" he Now has a New and Profound understanding of his Role, thanks to Quilliq!
friendly reminder the only reason we will never get a sequel to this is the death of Alan Rickman. the other cast and writers dont want to do it without him. and tbh, that's a good reason to not make another.
I worked in a movie theater when this was released, and there was nothing for it. No trailers, no marketing, no hype. The poster didn't even go up until release day. And yet, it's one of the best movies ever.
Gwen's job was to "Repeat the computer"/interact with it, so the Thermians programmed it to only respond to her voice. That's why she continued to repeat lines to the computer.
After watching this film, Mary, did you ever get around to watching the documentary they made about the making of it? The writer, director and actors talking all about it, and how they were all happily ready to sign-up again for either a film sequel, or a TV series of it? Until Alan couldn't accept due to being so ill, and then passing away . . . after which, none of them could face doing it without him being there with them on it . . . (Now that's someone's missing acting presence for you!) . . . Do enjoy it if you haven't yet . . .
The thing I love most about this is that Tony Shalhoub's character was supposed to be high/stoned through most of the movie. That's why you get most of the reactions out of him that we do.
I'm so happy you're watching this MC. I personally find it one of the few near perfect movies I've ever seen. Sets just the right tone of loving homage and parody whilst still giving us a decent enough space opera. Cheers Mary.
"What are you waiting for?" He was considering if it would be worth it. They still didn't know what exactly the Omega-13 device did, since it was never answered on the show. He was considering if he should activate it, since if it was a bomb it would kill the universe. That was why he hesitated.
Thanks for saying that. Because I just finished watching it for probably the 20th time and I did not know why there wasn’t a sequel as it was clearly set up and perfectly suited for.
@@alexwalker4329 Not so - there _were_ preparations in place for a sequel which were cancelled when it became clear that Alan Rickman had only a few months to live. The 'making of' film deals with this in some detail.
The movie that made my father figure and adopted dad understand my love of scifi. cause he was essentially the same as tim allen when he entered MY hobby world of scifi .
I love the fan service whereby the lore nerd gets to save the day by knowing the ship layout and how the maguffins are supposed to work. Pure, pure fan appreciation.
I didn't realize it was her in GQ until I saw a cast list on the VHS cover. I was stunned. As a blonde she is stunningly different from her usual self and roles. It was the same with "Holes". I caught on a little after she came on-screen, but was still a 'holy hell' kind of moment. Love her acting chops.
The NTE Protector. The NTE stands for Not The Enterprise. Also in a poll for the best Star Trek episodes and movies this film came in the top 10. Treckies have a lot of love and respect for this movie.
Galaxy Quest is such a cult-film among sci-fi fans that succeeds gloriously in everything it set out to achieve. It feels like a film that was never intended to do particularly well and succeeded despite itself but Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Rockwell hard carry this movie.
Popular fan theory for the continued story…the main kid, Brandon, gets introduced into the renewed series as a thank you for his help, as a kind of long lost/secret son between Gwen and the commander..
One of my favourite films. Introduced it to my kids (11, 14 and 16) earlier this year for a family movie night and they loved it. We always reference the kissing scene with Fred and Laliari by saying "There's Tentacles coming up" or just saying "Tentacles" when warning them there's about to be kissing in a movie we're watching! 🤣
BEST STAR TREK PARODY EVER! It shows us what would happen if aliens mistook the cast of Star Trek for real space heroes and are taken across the Galaxy to fight of an intergalactic warlord.
Sigourney Weaver shows up in "Paul" and "cabin in the woods" two really good movies and Tony shalhoub plays the dad in The family movie "13 ghosts" .. Also "Jeepers creepers" you should see Justin Long play with "the walrus."
I'm so happy to see you do this one Mary! I LOVE Galaxy Quest. As a science fiction fan in general and a Star Trek fan in particular, I've loved this movie since it's first release. The antipathy between the captain and the rest of the cast is based on the real life relationship between William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and the rest of the Star Trek the Original Series cast. The show is a parody of both Star Trek, its cast and its fandom and conventions, but it's a parody made with love. In many ways, it's also a love letter to Star Trek and the way the themes of the fictional Galaxy Quest mirror the themes of Star Trek, giving them their due as powerful and inspiring themes. In many ways, Galaxy Quest has come to be seen as a proxy Star Trek movie in and of itself - and an excellent one at that! When Seth McFarland created The Orville (which is superb) many thought it was going to be the same thing as Galaxy Quest - a fond parody. In a way that's true, although The Orville ended up being much more serious than Galaxy Quest, but holding true to its mix of comedy combined with classic Star Trek themes. I would also recommend you watch The Orville, since you liked Galaxy Quest. And watch some Star Trek too, if you want to see what inspires film and TV makers so much!
You're ending analysis was one of the the best and most coherent, so what I'm going to say next is not a criticism. What's the other context of this movie is that is a love letter to fandom especially of TV shows like Star Trek. It hits on all the cylinders of being a Trekkie.
I love Star Trek. The Original Series might be a little off-putting at first, given the production values and hokey acting from some (not all) performers, but I highly recommend it.
There's a charm in the hokey production and acting. Once you just accept the world and get into the stories. And they cast and writing got better as they went. Honestly, the first season of Next Generation is pretty cringe a lot of the time as well and the show doesn't really find itself until Season 3.
@@mycroft16 The cast and the writing definitely got better through the first two seasons. But, oh, that third season...ugh. And I totally agree about The Next Generation - they only really found their stride at the end of season two.
In my own head canon Ive always chosen to view the TOS as a theater play put on by the original crew to tell the tales of their voyage to ppl back home. Explains the low production values and hammy acting without undoing canonical events 😁
The more you learn about Star Trek, and its fandom, the more you appreciate the characters in this movie, and how amazing this movie is! I'm a life-long Star Trek fan... and see ALL the tropes and archetypes in this movie in REAL Star Trek movies and in the Fandom. Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie ever made!
Sigorney Weaver was in movie called Working Girl, (not lead) with Harrison Ford. Was huge for a while and worth a look. If for nothing else, it is very 1980's.
I'm glad you found this one. It's not a Star Trek movie but it is one of the best Star Trek movies. 🙂 Keep looking for the lesser known gems. There are a lot of them.
You have probably heard this many times, but you have such the prettiest smile ever. I love watching your reactions just to see how you light up when your smiling. Thank you for the positivity and keep up the good work your doing. Loving it.
If u enjoyed Sam Rockwell in this sci-fi classic, u need to check out another classic he was in. Moon (2009), Sam is pretty much the only actor on screen in the film and was robbed of an Oscar for his magnificent acting in it and it’s directed by Duncan Jones (David Bowie’s son)
Every time I watch this movie I think of the scene in Die Hard when Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) is reading the note pined to the body of one of his Hench men and think he needs to say "By Grabthar's hammer you shall be avenged".
An accidental masterpiece - what was shot was a much more adult piece altogether. Then a suit decided it had to be PG and it was severely pruned (by a genius) to create the 'not a moment wasted' masterpiece we know and love.
I wouldn't ever call this movie underrated.... It is pretty much loved by everyone I have ever talked to about the movie, and has a 90% critic score and 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is the best Star Trek movie. Also, they got the whole cast to agree to come back for an Amazon Prime series but sadly Alan Rickman passed away so they felt they could not go on without him.
15:27 Tommy being injured and carried off to the infirmary is played for laughs. And then things got awkward in reality. Daryl Mitchell, the actor playing Tommy, was later in a motorcycle accident and was left paralyzed from the waist down because of it. So...yeah, rewatch this scene with that fact in mind.
So glad you found your way to this movie, Mary. Still find it hard to believe you’ve never heard of it before. It didn’t exactly burn up the box office when first released, but it has been steadily gaining new fans over the years. One of the best sci-fi/comedies ever made.
Enrico Colantoni (leader of the Thermians) is also memorable in the Veronica Mars and Person Of Interest TV series. I first noticed him and Missy Pyle I this movie.
It is really amazing that the actor that played Captain Kirk(William Shatner) in the show this was (loosely) based on(Star Trek) actually got to go to space for real a month or so ago! Life imitating fiction!
One of my favorite comedy films. I can only imagine how much more I’d love it if I was a Trekkie so I can pick up all the Easter eggs and inside jokes 🙂
"You've made me so very happy." Blood Sweat &Tears 1968. I love this movie?Guy had the most insight. "Did you guys ever watch the show".Gwen's suit open to the waist was explained in a cut scene and the continuity people missed it. Action comedy suspense Alan Rickman Mr Monk and young Justin Long. @@jean-paulaudette9246 I'll check it out.
@@fad23 He is criminally underrated.
@@HoracioAmiritoDiaz Most definitely agreed. Enjoy!
@@Dizzy473 He very clearly sold it as "Family Guy in Space" with the intention of turning into "Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Journey Continues"
The Orville sometimes goes too far with adult issues but I love the show.
I love the moment when they see the mashers and you can tell that Sigorney Weaver 100% does NOT say "Well screw that!"
There’s a cut scene about Tony Shalhoub’s character and the fact that he’s supposed to be high throughout the film which is why he’s so calm about everything
Of course the joke is that he was high throughout most of his life - it's just that he went from cocaine to pot.
Yeah I think the rated R cut of this film makes it more obvious that he’s always stoned. Hence why he’s looking for snacks when they get beamed up lol
@@1dudecrush lol exactly, And he play's it perfectly loved him
there's an r-rated cut of this film?????
@@highstimulation2497 Well [screw] that!
"Guy's the last one standing!" A joke a lot of people miss!
"I think we're the green thingy." Sam Rockwell was so great in this movie
I'm just impressed that will all the big name talent in the movie, Enrico Colantoni and baby Sam Rockwell steal every scene they are in.
The actress, who played the good looking alien woman "Jane Doe" Was also hilarious in movie "Dodgeball" She played the Russian "rocket arm" woman.
Romanovia, to be exact. 😆
She also plays Violet Beauregarde''s mom in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
"And it exploded" is one of the best delivered lines in any movie, period.
For me, it was Alan Rickman's character Development that was the Most intense. For "The New Adventures" he Now has a New and Profound understanding of his Role, thanks to Quilliq!
"I see you managed to get your shirt off."
friendly reminder the only reason we will never get a sequel to this is the death of Alan Rickman. the other cast and writers dont want to do it without him. and tbh, that's a good reason to not make another.
I just hope the 'hollywood mind' never touch on this film. It's already a complete and strong film tbh.
By Grabthar's hammer, what a review!
Delightful to see this movie again through Mary's review. Keep up the great work!
One of the best Star Trek movies ever, and it isn't even a Star Trek movie
It's also why he's eating in so many of the scenes. He supposedly has a case of the munchies.
I'm so happy you're watching this MC. I personally find it one of the few near perfect movies I've ever seen. Sets just the right tone of loving homage and parody whilst still giving us a decent enough space opera. Cheers Mary.
“Let’s get out of here before one of those things kills guy!” 😂 favourite line
"What are you waiting for?"
He was considering if it would be worth it. They still didn't know what exactly the Omega-13 device did, since it was never answered on the show. He was considering if he should activate it, since if it was a bomb it would kill the universe. That was why he hesitated.
I always thought that it was another scifi trope playing out - the overlong dramatic pause that William Shatner did so well.
sam rockwell is my favorite in this. "we've gotta get outta here before one of those things kills Guy!"
This is such a feel-good movie. It does my heart good to watch it every once in a while. I can't remember how many times I've seen it, but it's a lot.
This movie was a classic the moment it came out, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say something negative about this one.
Someone would have to try pretty hard to find something to complain about
“The Godfather, A Place in the Sun, Dodsworth, Galaxy Quest-these are perfect films.” -David Mamet.
A sequel was in the works until Alan Rickman's passing. They decided not to continue without him.
He did an amazing job as always. Such a good actor.
Thanks for saying that. Because I just finished watching it for probably the 20th time and I did not know why there wasn’t a sequel as it was clearly set up and perfectly suited for.
He died 17 years after it came out. His passing had nothing to do with them not making a sequel
Sigourney Weaver played a historical role, as primatologist & conservationist Diane Fosse, in "Gorillas in The Mist."
great movie.....
I also enjoyed Gary Larson's "Chickens In The Mist"
I didn't realize it was her in GQ until I saw a cast list on the VHS cover. I was stunned. As a blonde she is stunningly different from her usual self and roles. It was the same with "Holes". I caught on a little after she came on-screen, but was still a 'holy hell' kind of moment. Love her acting chops.
@@chrismaverick9828 Yeah, agreed. She's impressively versitile.
"Awww he's saying it!" Not only is he saying it, but he was meaning it. :D
The NTE Protector. The NTE stands for Not The Enterprise. Also in a poll for the best Star Trek episodes and movies this film came in the top 10. Treckies have a lot of love and respect for this movie.
If you like modern westerns and Quigley Down Under, you'll love Dances with Wolves.
So quotable too: "we gotta get out of here before one of those things kills Guy"
"And it exploded."
Tim Allen doing the best Bill Shatner Impersonation ever.
This movie came out the same year as The Mummy with Brandon Fraser, which I also consider a near-perfect movie. What a great year for movies.
Another great Sigourney Weaver movie is Snow White Tale of Terror where she plays the the Evil Queen and Sam Neil plays Snow White’s father.
This is one of my favorite comedies! Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell have some of my favorite moments. But the whole cast is honestly perfect.
They also did that in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
@@dwnkaomwn3953 Saw an Episode of that, yet I think the "humor" in that show is simply primitive most of the Time.
probably one of my favorite movies AND my favorite reactions that you've done. watching you truly enjoy it completely has made my day.
Before Alan Rickman died, they were close to doing a Galaxy Quest TV show with the entire original cast. 😲
Nooooo really?!
That would have been interesting. Maybe an animated series...?
yeah. the cast was ready to go, but when he passed, said they just couldn’t do it without him.
No, they weren't. WHo are you fooling?
@@samanthanickson6478 No, they weren't. Of course, they couldn't do it without him. He's already dead.
there were a lot of "Kids In the Hall" in this movie
I love Star Trek. The Original Series might be a little off-putting at first, given the production values and hokey acting from some (not all) performers, but I highly recommend it.
There's a charm in the hokey production and acting. Once you just accept the world and get into the stories. And they cast and writing got better as they went. Honestly, the first season of Next Generation is pretty cringe a lot of the time as well and the show doesn't really find itself until Season 3.
@@mycroft16 I agree.
The movies, though. OMG
This movie has more respect for StarTrek than some of the newer actual StarTrek series (but arguably not as much as The Orville)
Can't wait. This is in my Top 5 favorite movies of All-time. The writing was so smart for this movie. So many jokes that are not noticed right away.
I'm glad you found this one. It's not a Star Trek movie but it is one of the best Star Trek movies. 🙂
Keep looking for the lesser known gems. There are a lot of them.
Sam Rockwell is so underrated in almost everything he is in.
He was great as Wild Bill in The Green Mile. Also Captain K in Jojo Rabbit.
@@stevensantos1004 You also MUST see him in "Moon". He is just incredible.
It's a terrific film. Always enjoy seeing people react to it! Thanks!
Sam Rockwell is just perfect in this. "Did you guys ever *watch* the show?!?"
Moon was a pretty good movie.
@@pleutron my favourite modern day sci-fi film
I didn't think he was robbed of an Oscar when he worked on Moon, but I felt it was a stepping stone for him to get one. I was right.
Moon was really well done. Fun idea.
Zaphod Beeblebrox. A great rendition of a great character.
Every time I watch this movie I think of the scene in Die Hard when Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) is reading the note pined to the body of one of his Hench men and think he needs to say "By Grabthar's hammer you shall be avenged".
Fun fact, there was a scene cut showing Tony shalhoub's character Fred smoking, which explains his behavior throughout the movie.
For another movie you may have never seen or heard of that has an A-list cast top to bottom, I would highly suggest *Mars Attacks* from 1995.
absolutely!
This is often described as "the second-best Star Trek movie", and I completely agree.
Most of the actors thought that this movie is going to flap. They said it's gonna go straight to DVD. But yah I love this movie too.
Probably the greatest science fiction spoof of all time. Leaves Spaceballs in its dust.
For a movie featuring Sigourney Weaver in a non sci-fi role, I recommend you check out the 1993 movie "Dave" with Kevin Kline.
I loved how they shoved a speculum in Sigourney’s face. 😂
Great evaluation on your part. Love ya.
