  • Ducati Multistrada reliability, problems & issues. Electrical problems and electrical issues, heated grips, fuel gauge / fuel sender unit / fuel level sensor, wheel bearings.
    Today we look at the problems and issues I have experienced during 20,000km and 3 years of ownership. This is the sixth video in a series about buying and ownership of a Ducati Multistrada and my personal long-term experience.
    The Ducati Multistrada does have some other important issues you need to be aware of, so I am going to cover the common problems, tyre choice, comfort, brakes and maintenance, touring, servicing, electrical issues, gearbox problems, modifications and the exhaust system.
    I am going to share my honest, straight forward review of what you can expect from buying a used Ducati Multistrada and the issues and problems I have experienced and how to fix them.

    Another great video, cheers Carl. I haven't had the fuel sensor issue, although my heated grips have never worked since I got the bike (second-hand, no warranty). Couldn't care less about that though, nor the numerous other issues the bike's had in the three years I've had it though - rode home from work today via the Peak District and arrived with the usual ear-to-ear grin.

    I had to fit a replacement fuel sender unit to my 2010 multistrada. Apart from that not much else has gone wrong. Good videos.

      Hi Ian, thank you for the compliment. You are very lucky and I agree some owners have almost no problems or issues with there Mutistradas, although many of us do. I have the next video almost ready to publish but I've been struggling with how to deliver it. Because as you have experienced sometimes owners are very lucky, and others not. So I hope the next video is received as I intend... really just making new owners aware of what can sometimes happen and some of the historical problems. I do love my Multi... but problems do occur.     Hey, I've watched 4 of these Multistrada videos now. Phenomenal job! The level of detail is awesome. I've owned my 2012 Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak Special Edition from new. I haven't had all the issues you have, but ive had some. It's definitely worth spending the time fixing, as there is nothing that performs and is as versatile as a Multi. Great bikes. Again, love the content.

      Thank you 🙏, I do miss my multistrada it’s a brilliant bike and the version you have is one of the best they made, the PP version is beautiful.
      I would have bought the new V4 if they had kept the single sided swing arm and retained the 17” front wheel

      Very nice, liked your video, fyi it’s better not to show number plates and the number on TH-cam as lots of people (criminals) copy the number plates and then ride around with your number, perhaps not where you live but in UK and Europe it’s very common problem.

    I ve mine from 2011 S multi, no problems at all, everything are still working great. No issues except the rear brake as you mentioned & i fixed it easily.
    Even until now 2024 ducati never made a multi like the 2010-2012 mod, 189kg dry!!!!, ohlins TTX full electric adjust, testastretta engine, desmo, trellis frame all in one...!
    Let's wait to see the RS edition after 14 years... Great videos 🤙

      @@justthewayitis true quick question how many keys did you get with your multristrada. Mine comes with 1 key fob and 1 red key dunno if that is correct thanks

      One main Key, plus a plastic RFID key to use if the main key breaks. Normally this is inside the large red service pack that comes with the bike.
      I always keep a spare battery in the tank bag, because the main battery does not last a whole year. Carl

      One other thing I should mention, if the main key ever fails to start your bike. Open it up as normal and hold the key by the metal part. Then carefully place BEHIND the dash board. The bike will now start.

    I currently own a Honda VFR 800 2009 (besides an RC51) and was considering to upgrade to the multistrada 1200 pikes peak 2010, would maybe prefer something with more comfort for the long rides, and after watching this video I reconsidered :)

      It's not all bad news. Most 2010 / 2011 bikes that you buy now in 2022 will be sorted, certainly for the early common issues. The 2016 DVT Pikes Peak is a very nice well sorted bike, if its within your price range. Or if you can find one through a dealer you would get some warranty. Carl

      Sadly the 2016 DVT Pikes Peak is out of my budget. The prices here in Austria even of the used bikes are pretty high because of the NoVA tax. When I heard about the clutch catching air issue it instantly reminded me of my previous Ducati 749, it had the same niggle. Nevertheless very nice and informative videos. Please keep them coming.

      Flinch, I'm not a total Ducati fan, or any other brand. I'm a Motorbike fan... so let us all know what you decide to get. It takes a lot of time to earn enough money to buy a bike... new or used, so as long as you enjoy your choice.. that's the key thing. Best wishes Carl

    Hello sir. Thank you for videos, i like them very much. Do you have a small manual or how to for integrating the oxford grips in the oem wiring harnes? I want to add them and going for a clean look. Thank you

      Hi Erik, welcome to the channel. No there is no manual for doing this. But it's very simple to do. The oxford grips have two wires for each grip, I just connected them into the Ducati wiring which is located left and right just under the front of the fuel tank. You dont need to remove the fuel tank. They work brilliant... Carl

      @@justthewayitis oké thank you so much carl. Do i need to measure the polarity of the wires beforehand? Like is there a plus and minus circuit to consider? Sorry final question. The heated grips option needs to be enabled by the ducati dealer. Is that using thesame tool for reading error codes etc?

      Hi Erik, I used a multimeter to determine + and - feeds. My bike already had heated grips so everything worked straight away. If your bike currently does NOT have heated grips the dealer will need to turn this function on. I am not sure if you can do this yourself... maybe its possible. I know a friend had his dealer turn them on for him, I think he put 25€ in the workshop coffee tin as payment. It took just a couple of minutes to do. I think it will depend on how friendly your dealer is.

      The Oxford grips are much much better than the oem ones, both in terms of grip and heat.

    I'm thinking of getting one of these.but know nothing about Ducatis . would you advise in getting one.?

      Hi Paul, you don't mention which year or model, but in general my answer is absolutely yes. A lot depends on the type riding you do and your budget. If you take your time and read through the comments, some owners have experience virtually none of the common issues and covered high mileage without problems, while others have covered equally high mileage but have experience some of the issues I cover throughout the multistrada series. I think that condition is much more important than mileage, but buying used ... you have two routes. Private and from a dealership, both have their + / - . A dealership will give you warranty cover which gives you some security for the first 6 or 12 months and buying private can give you a good reduction in price. Ultimately I highly recommend looking and road testing as many as you can, and quickly you will get a feel for the ones which have been well looked after.       Good morning
      First thing I would do, is join the local / UK Ducati Multistrada forum, they have a section with bikes that are for sale from forum members. This is a good place to start.
      7 to 8,000 GBP will buy you a great bike, I had a look for you this morning and in the UK you can get a 2013/14 1200 S dual spark model (registered in 2015) with panniers and low miles (8,211 miles) and service history for 7.5K which is great value. Suggest you look on Autotrader there are several options.
      However, if you can stretch to 8,500 you can find 2015 onwards 1200 S DVT models which offer more equipment (Better TFT dashboard, cornering ABS, improved brakes and improved reliability)
      As I mentioned before, have some fun and go road test several bikes and ask lots of questions. Just remember to take into account the big service which is due at 24K or 30K miles depending on the year model.

    I have one of those 1200s 2010. I bought it second hand. Left the dealer with half a tank then after not even 10 miles out dropped to reserve. Filled up the tank but the max I've filled in there is 12 litres. Today I fitted a new fuel sensor from a Ducati dealer. Ride back home. Showing reserve. Filled up and only 12 litres went in there. 🤷 The tank is supposed to be 20 litres. Can't work my head around it.

      Hi Mike, I could be wrong but if you fitted an early sender unit it would be fine, but if you fitted a revision D onwards it needs to be calibrated by the dealer. I think that the current part numbers end in F so it would need calibration.
      Have a look at your invoice/ receipt and let me know.

      @@justthewayitis it was fitted by the dealer. I suppose he must have calibrated it. Either the bike drinks an insane amount of fuel or the tank is not really 20 litres.

      Hi Mike, hold on,,,, if I remember correctly I would hit the 3 bar reserve and when I filled up generally it was 15 liters.

      Hope this helps, below is the approximate average amount of fuel added at each bar reading.
      3 bars 13-15 litres added
      2 bars = 15-17 litres added
      1 bars = 18 litres added
      Max capacity 20 litres
      Average 350 km per full tank is my average over a month.
      Maximum achievement 410km this was on tour.
      Normal fill up was done at 300km regardless of fuel gauge readings and this is how I decided on this.
      Filled up to max.
      Rode 360 km until the last bar was showing then went back out with a fuel can in my top box.
      When the last bar went out I stopped and filled up and only managed to get 18 litres in, which means you still have around 20 miles / 30km of range when the last bar goes out.
      Sounds like you need to do your own similar test
