  • In this video, we take a look at the basics of entering a holding pattern and how to fly one using simple turns with the Textron G36.

Thank you for this great explanation! I embarrassed myself on my first VatSim flight by coming in too high & missing the approach... and the missed approach was a hold, with me coming into it head-on like your Salem example. This will help so much!

Its funny because I have my instrument written test in a week and your videos are hand feeding me the material.

Man... don’t post videos while I’m driving. I can’t wait to watch 😁

Just hold a pattern and watch

...so you commented (and edited!) a comment while driving instead? Way to go, genius.

Lysdestic never said that I wrote it while driving

what peripheral were you using to scroll the heading bug, out of interest? i need one. :)

Just a scroll wheel on any old mouse :)

Because the AP wants to make standard rate turns, could you bug the opposite course, and then just swap it between HDG and NAV modes, letting it do both turns for you? Or would it not consistently choose which direction to turn when you switched to heading?

Thanks for these navigation videos, Mr Gatcomb.. Tell me this please: In a real aircraft, during real flights, do the MFD controls actually stand up to all that cranking around? And, does a real pilot have to be rated to operate particular moels of MFDs (like a Textron vs a Garmin)?

The cranking isn't too bad in real life, they scroll fairly smoothly. And no, there is no requirement to be rated for different types of avionics. If you're flying a plane with a glass cockpit (G1000), and you did all your training on traditional steam gauges, it's not a great idea to go up without an instructor to show you how the different avionics function, but there is no legal requirement stopping you from doing so. At least in the US.

Is it assumed that when ATC gives you clearance for the approach that you are to complete the holding pattern and secondly, is there ever a case where ATC would have you skip the holding pattern and if so, what phraseology would ATC use to tell you to skip it?

If they want you to hold at any fix for spacing or whatever reason it is, they'll tell you what radial and fix to hold on, how long of legs (1min, or a distance), direction of turn (right/left), then a time to expect further clearance (EFC time). They'll tell you to either proceed direct to the next fix in your flight plan or whatever is next once they want you to leave the hold. Lets say there is an approach with a hold/procedure-turn, you don't have to hold at that point if they give you vectors to final, or clear you straight in, or you're using a transition that specifies noPT (no procedure turn) on the chart. I hope that answers your question.

Hey I have a question, when I fly the Cessna 172 Skyhawk G1000 and put the alt in the flight plan for the gps way points it crashes my game. Have you experienced this?

URL to the website, where you illustrated the turn.

It's right there in the URL bar of the browser window he has open. pohperformance.com/Bonanza/index.html

I found I had to go to pohperformance.com and then go through a very short and simple process of accepting terms & conditions. Once in, the site gives you a choice of different aircraft to choose from (Bonanza, C172, C182, TBM). Choose an aircraft type, click on the 'Instrument Procedures' tab and select 'Hold Entry' to get the tool illustrated in the video. You can also get apps for each aicraft type for both Android and iOS phones.
