    Awesome video which adds to my understanding of ILS approaches. Please continue making these videos, you do a great job explaining the concepts. Agree with others that this is not a beginner video but neither is flying in general. There's a lot to learn and know, doubt anyone could explain 20 hours of content and knowledge that is required in 22 minutes. Be patient, watch other videos and you'll always pick up something new.

    Where did you get your 172? It is significantly different than the one that comes by default in MS FS2020. I love the combination of analogue guages with only a minimum amount of digital accessories to ease the work load. The 172 in MS FS2020 is entirely a G1000 glass cockpit.

    5:27, I assume it should be slightly off to the right?
    And can we use the nav mode on the way to KIBBE with the second navigation gauge (the one with 113.00), instead of using heading mode?
    11:35, was it supposed to be 90 degree? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm new to all this, but since it's a teardrop and not an offset entry, the initial heading from KIBBE should be 90, right?

    Important notes about backcourses:
    - Don't fly a backcourse if there isn't a published procedure or chart for it. The sim may not model this, idk, but as I understand it, they can be unreliable IRL if not tuned for the purpose.
    - Most backcourses don't have vertical guidance; they're localizer-only. This will be mentioned on the chart if that's the case (i.e. "Disregard glide slope indications").

  • @eraser2727
    @eraser2727 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: Is this little teardrop lap at the entry point mandatory? Why not go into the ILS course just with a right turn? If so, why not use the other radials that don't have that?
    Also: Why is there a radial just 1nm before the runway? How can that possibly be enough time to line up for the ils?

  • @Vograx

    I have a challenge for you P Gatcomb. I was recently flying to KTCM and given this approach instruction
    "KOBOLD 1524, you are 25 miles north. Maintain present heading and altitude. Expect ILS runway 16 approach via TCM 257 radial, 100 DME arc. Cleared to TCM"
    What are we supposed to do here? What even is the 100 DME arc??

    @P Gatcomb, I really like your videos, but why do you use the word TREE for THREE (i.e. 233 = TWO TREE TREE). Is that a Connecticut thing? Just curious.

    • @Jack-gp1ng
      @Jack-gp1ng 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      its a good practice while talking over radio as "three" can be mistaken for other words such as "free" whilst tree is more identifiable. Another number is 5 which can be pronounced as "fife" but less people use this. Another is 9 which is pronounced "Niner" (This is down to "Nine" sounding like "Nein" being the german word for No) . It is in the same vein of the phonetic alphabet where words and pronunciations are chosen in order to make it easy to distinguish.

    • @weepingeye
      @weepingeye 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken. From what I can gather, you can certainly plan for an ILS in the World Map page, but no, I've not seen the actual frequencies anywhere as an option. You can pretty much Google different charts and approach plates or there are many sites that will help. SkyVector is excellent (if you're in the US. I can't find charts in it for elsewhere), I have a paid subscription to Navigraph - also excellent and world wide. And some countries like Australia have free access to charts and supplements as well.

    • @hexrays
      @hexrays 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weepingeye Thanks! FSX had all frequencies available with a mouse click hovered over a runway. Perhaps this will be added to MSFS at a later date, I hope.

    • @coreymalis3851
      @coreymalis3851 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If a runway is ILS enabled then the frequency can be viewed within the world map prior to flight. To view the frequency select "open filters" and select NAVAIDS . The VOR/DME (ILS) can be clicked on and the frequency will display in the information section. By default the world map does not display NAVAIDS. Be sure to activate NAVAIDS in the filter. Some of the planes can list the ILS runway and frequency while in flight when selecting airports in range. I'm having fun with the G1000 and having the ILS populate while on approach.
